More than the sum of its parts, the conceptual swappable-piece mobile phone design that went viral but is now being backed by Google-owned Motorola and is suddenly much closer to becoming a reality. Instead of recycling your cell, imagine switching in new pieces as needed to customize, repair and upgrade the same device indefinitely.

Dutch design student  Dave Hakkens set off a chain reaction when he released his initial concept video online featuring Phonebloks, a simple but powerful idea for future-proofing mobile phones and creating an open ecosystem around such devices.

modular upgradeable phone concept

Motorola, meanwhile, was already working on a free, open-hardware device (think: Android for physical objects) along similar lines, and have now teamed up with this suddenly-famous designer. Like app makers in the digital marketplace, developers of physical components can make their own puzzle-piece parts for the devices.

Thunderclap helped Hakkens reach a huge audience quickly, with fans lending their social reach to promote the idea. Engineers, technicians and designers around the world showed interest in Hakkens’ design immediately as he racked up tens of millions of video views. He then began shopping around for partners to work on the project.

modular kit of parts

For its part in the partnership, Motorola brings technological research, experimentation and expertise to the table. In turn, Hakkens has built a huge fan following, showing his ability as innovator, designer and marketer.

Project Ara, Motorola’s name for the overarching and ongoing project, will be deployed along the same lines as Google Glass to beta testers. The first Phonebloks will be released to a limited audience who will in turn provide suggestions and feedback on the devices.

Kodak API to help app developers take photos from phone to print

18 Oct

2013-10-15_11.18.16.jpg

One of the remaining arms of the Kodak legacy, Kodak Alaris, is working to remain relevant by focusing its efforts on moving photos from smartphone to print, via one of its 105,000 photo printing kiosks worldwide. The company recently released its API to lure developers into adding Kodak kiosk printing capabilities directly into their mobile photography apps. Learn more at connect.dpreview.com.

Make Ol’ Timey RoundographsOn Your Phone

11 Oct

The Kodak No. 1 was the first camera available to non-pros. It let anyone document and share their day to day life.

It was the o.g. Instagram.

Uniquely, photos taken with the Kodak No. 1 were printed in charming 2.5″ sepia circles.

The National Media Museum just released a set of Kodak No. 1 photos and it turns out day-to-day life in the 1890′s was pretty cool. Boat rides, beach trips, and hats galore!

They inspired us to give our photos that Kodak No. 1 look. So, we cooked up this simple recipe:

  1. Crop your photo into a circle. We used PicFrame.
  2. Run it through a black and white Instagram filter but don’t post it. Put your phone in airplane mode before you hit “share” and when the upload fails, just X it out. (It’ll save the filtered photo to your phone.)
  3. Run the photo you just saved though Instagram one more time. This time, use a filter with a brownish tint for that ol’ timey feel. (We like Hefe and Sutro best).
  4. Turn off airplane mode and share away! (Whatever hashtag the first Kodak users used has been lost to history. But we’re using #Roundograph.)

It’s that easy! Give your photos that great 1888 look using just a couple of apps… Or invest in headwear (those folks seriously loved their hats).

p.s. Hey SF Bay Area! We’re having a Sony Smart Lens Party next week. Lenses on-hand to play with and purchase! RSVP or Find out more.

What would you do for a new smartphone? At recent promotional event in Seoul, South Korea, twenty people were injured, seven seriously, while trying to collect free phone vouchers for LG’s new G2 handset. According to authorities, the stunt went badly wrong when crowds showed up carrying BB guns and ‘knives on sticks’ to retrieve the vouchers, which were suspended from helium balloons. This simply confirms our long-standing suspicion that the human race truly is doomed. Click through to read more at connect.dpreview.com.
