  • Hidden Lake, Glacier National Park

    Glacier National Park suffers from no shortage of iconic vistas and formations. Hidden Lake lookout, above Logan Pass, is a place you can lose yourself taking in the iconic vistas and mountain peaks. Even the locals (Mountain Goats, Marmots and Bighorn Sheep) seem to stop to enjoy the views from time to time. They also seem to enjoy watching visiting photographers as I found out. The Mountain Goats (photos to come) might just surprise you by being right behind you and Marmots aren’t too shy about inspecting your gear. In fact on a previous trip to Glacier National Park a Marmot tried to take off with my tripod. Now that I think about it perhaps the locals here are closet photographers when no one is around

  • Sunrise at Wild Goose Island, Glacier National Park

    Few places are as dramatic in appearance at sunrise as Glacier National Park in Montana. When I visit Glacier National Park I never miss an opportunity to witness a sunrise (even if I’ve had to fight my inner voice).  One of the best locations to take in a sunrise in the park is at the Wild Goose Island lookout.

    You only get one sunrise and one sunset a day, and you only get so many days on the planet. A good photographer does the math and doesn’t waste either. – Galen Rowell

    To capture the full sunrise scene pictured below I created a panoramic from 3 images via a Canon 24mm tilt-shift lens. Even though my multi-image panoramic technique expanded the angle of view to capture more of the scene than a single frame could, its impossible to do this scene justice. Out of frame was a Bald Eagle circling about getting an even better view of the scene unfolding. In all of my years visiting Glacier I’ve never seen a Bald Eagle. It made an amazing sunrise all the more special.

  • Snow Covered Merced River – Yosemite National Park

    Tough to believe that Summer has almost passed here in California. I’ve heard many photographers as of late mentioning they’re eagerly awaiting Fall to see the leaves turn color. I myself am quite content with Summer for now. For those suffering from extreme summer temperatures I hope this cool view of a snow covered Merced river in Yosemite National Park  acts as mental air conditioning. Make the most of the weekend as it’s one of the few remaining this Summer.

  • Clements Mountain with Wildflowers, Glacier National Park

    Logan Pass in Glacier National Park is a truly special place and a gem of the U.S. National Park system. It is for this reason it is one of the most popular locations to visit in Glacier National Park. Adding to the allure is a very short season that the pass is open. At an altitude of 6646 feet (2026 m) it is often one of the last portions of the park to open. In fact this year the Road to the Sun, the road leading to Logan Pass, opened on July 13th… the latest the road has ever opened to date. As you’d imagine it was well worth the wait. Photographed just last week (see below) is Clements Mountain, a small waterfall and colorful wildflowers.

    I’ve been back 3 days and I already can’t wait to return to Logan Pass at the soonest opportunity.

  • Old Faithful Night Eruption with Big Dipper, Yellowstone National Park

    After departing Glacier National Park last week I made a one night stop in Yellowstone National Park. What do you photograph at night in Yellowstone? If you’re me, Old Faithful erupting at night with the Big Dipper in the background.

    I was fortunate that the weather was clear on this particular night as it allowed for the moon to illuminate the scene evenly and it made it easy to capture the starry sky above. On the other hand my timing could have been better. I missed the 10:15pm eruption and had to wait approximately 80 minutes for the next one. For nearly 80 minutes it was just me and the Big Dipper passing time. While I was hoping to avoid a long wait, it was a relaxing evening none-the-less.

  • Racetrack by Starlight – Death Valley National Park

    The racetrack in Death Valley National Park is a place that always leaves me in awe of nature. The tracks left behind stones on this dry lake bed have a mysterious magical quality to them and even more so at night. Photographed on the same evening as Racetrack Light Lasso and Racetrack Light Lasso II, in this version of the scene I took a less radical image to highlight the natural beauty of the stone and lake bed.

  • Fern Leaves, Yosemite National Park


    Yosemite provides an endless well of inspiration, even more so if you stop looking up. Tough to do, but always enlightening when it happens. On a casual walk amidst burnt trees on the valley floor the wind was kind enough to introduce me to some beautiful ferns. The next time you’re walking in your favorite location I recommend listening to the wind as you never know what it’ll introduce you to.

  • Winter’s Bones II – Yosemite National Park


    Recent snow in the Sierra Nevada mountains has me thinking about Yosemite and a much needed return to the splendor of winter there. I know I’m not the only one that feels this way and historically speaking there is one person who certainly knew the feeling…
