22 October, 2013 – An Appeal for Divergence and Simplicity

22 Oct

Mark Dubovoy’s latest essay is an appeal for DIVERGENCE instead of CONVERGENCE for those photographers not interested in video. It is also an appeal for badly needed and apparently forgotten simplicity in Pro cameras of all kinds.

16 October, 2013 – Sony Alpha 7R Hands-On & More

16 Oct

We have three new articles being published today. The first is a brief report on the three new cameras that Sony has just introduced. These are going to shake up the industry a bit (as Sony tends to do).

The second article is a hands-on report written following my spending a few days earlier this month working with the exciting new Sony Alpha 7R.

The third is a new essay from our regular contributor Alain Briot titled In Priase of Amateurs.

13 October, 2013 – Egypt – Along The Nile

13 Oct

Recent violence and unsettled politics in Egypt has turned one of the world’s most important and well visited historical areas into a tourism ghost town. Given the singular quality of the antiquities, curiosity about the culture, and the Egyptians’ centuries of economic reliance on tourism, the tour busses and cruise ships will inevitably return.

Don Whitebread’s new travel article documents a recent photographic exploration of the Nile River.

11 October, 2013 – The Art of Fooling Around

11 Oct

Do you take your photography too seriously? Are you offended when someone asks, "Was that Photoshopped?" If so, you might find our latest essay, The Art of Fooling Around, of interest.

A quick word of thanks to everyone who has commented on our new site design, both pro and con. It was a long time in development, and sometimes it isn’t until something is live that flaws are visible.

In the past 48 hours we have been tweeking the design a bit and are now happy with what we have. We have also tested on virtually every current web browser and hand-held device and in all cases the site displays properly. Thanks again for your comments and support.

3 October, 2013 – Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera Review

03 Oct

Whereas the rate of change in the still camera industry seems to have reached something of a plateau, video is rife with developments. A small Australian company called Black Magic has just started shipping the Blackmagic Pocket Cinea Camera which is shaking up the video marketplace.

I have just spent the past week working in the field with it and my review is now online. Also published today is an article titled The Making of Algonquin Autumn, which describes the process of making a short film with the BMPCC over this past weekend.

"Having been to Antarctica with Michael and Kevin, I would say after having traveled the world and shot nearly my entire life as an exhibiting photographer,  it was one of my highlights in my life and I talk about it, all the time.  The images and experience of seeing something visionary and nearly extinct from the world, to see and experience the wildlife and scenery that does not fear humans is amazing.  The images I shot there won me two Smithsonian awards and nearly 18 other international awards". – Tim Wolcott
