You can now use select Nikon DSLRs, mirrorless cameras as webcams on macOS

Yesterday, Nikon released a beta version of its Webcam Utility software for macOS. Like the Windows version, released back on August 6, the macOS utility will allow owners of Nikon Z series and DSLR camera owners to use their compatible cameras as webcams with popular livestreaming and video conferencing software via USB.

The macOS version of the Webcam Utility appears to function identically as the Windows version, complete with support for the following cameras: Z7, Z6, Z5, Z50, D6, D850, D780, D500, D7500 and D5600. The process is as simple as installing the utility, plugging in your camera via USB and selecting it as an input source with a compatible livestreaming or video conferencing program, such as Zoom, Google Teams, OBS Studio and others.

Nikon 14-24mm F2.8 S and 50mm F1.2 S for Z-mount unveiled

Nikon has officially announced two more lenses for its Z-mount, full-frame mirrorless system: the Nikkor Z 14-24mm F2.8 S and 50mm F1.2 S. Both are slated to arrive by the end of 2020.

Nikkor Z 14-24mm F2.8 S

The 14-24mm is almost 35% lighter than its AF-S 14-24mm F2.8 G predecessor for DSLRs, and thanks to a nearly-flat front element it accepts conventional threaded filters (albeit very large 112mm ones) via the included HB-97 lens hood. That’s unusual for a lens of this type, and a rear filter holder also accepts trimmed gel filters.

Overall the lens measures a relatively compact 88.5mm (3.5in) x 124.5mm (5in), and weighs 650g (1.4lb). It includes a nine-blade aperture and features Nano Crystal and ARNEO anti-reflective coatings to control ghosting, flare and coma. Like the recent Z 24-70mm and 70-200mm F2.8 zooms that this lens complements, the 14-24mm offers ‘extensive’ weather sealing and includes a small OLED display panel on the lens barrel itself.

Nikkor Z 50mm F1.2 S

The Z 14-24mm may be relatively compact for its class, but the Z 50mm F1.2 S is decidedly not. With optics one and a half times bigger than those used by the Z 50mm F1.8, it weighs in at 1090g (2.4lb) and measures 89.5mm (3.6in) x 150m (6in).

It features a ‘symmetrical’ optical design, which Nikon says improves its ability to provide edge-to-edge sharpness. The lens features two focusing groups, each with its own STM stepping motor, and its optical formula includes three aspherical elements to boost resolution and reduce distortion. Nano Crystal and ARNEO coatings are also used, and like 50mm F1.2 also includes weather-sealing and lens barrel display.

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm S F2.8 will go on sale in November for $ 2400; the Nikkor Z 50mm F1.2 arrives in December for $ 2100.

Nikon to Announce the 14-24mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.2 for Z Mount

Nikon hasn’t managed to capture much airtime over the past few months, what with the Canon EOS R5 and R6 launch as well as the Sony a7S III announcement.

But Nikon continues to produce top-notch kit, and we’ll see the fruits of the company’s labor later this week, with the official announcement for two new lenses:

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S.

And the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S.

Both lenses are designed for Nikon’s Z mount cameras, which means that they’ll be compatible with Nikon’s mirrorless bodies: the Nikon Z5, Nikon Z6, Nikon Z7, and Nikon Z50.

Let’s take a closer look at what you can expect from these two lenses.

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S

This lens will be a Z mount remake of a popular F-mount (DSLR) lens, the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G.

And, if the original lens is anything to go by, the Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S will be an absolute powerhouse.

At the very least, the Z mount 14-24mm will give Nikon users an ultra-wide zoom with an f/2.8 maximum aperture, which will be appreciated by many photographers, including astrophotographers and other low-light shooters. At present, Z mount f/2.8 zooms are limited to the 24-70mm f/2.8 and the 70-200mm f/2.8; while both of these are excellent lenses, they just don’t offer the perspective that you can get from a 14-24mm lens.

According to Nikon Rumors, the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 will work with front filters (which is always a concern with ultra-wide lenses), but will also take rear filters. The 14-24mm will be relatively compact, and will feature “smooth and silent autofocus.”

In other words:

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 will likely be a lens that does a lot of things well, from landscapes and astrophotography to those ultra-wide travel and event shots that draw the viewer straight into the scene.

The Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S

Nikon already offers a Z mount 50mm lens: the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S.

But the new 50mm f/1.2 S will go beyond the 50mm f/1.8 S; that extra maximum aperture may not seem like much, but it’s critical for low-light shooters of all types, as well as anyone who’s after the best possible bokeh.

That’s why, if you’re a portrait photographer or an event photographer, the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S should be at the top of your wish-list.

While the 50mm f/1.2 S is likely to offer stellar image quality, such a wide maximum aperture comes with a serious price:

The lens is going to be big and hefty. This certainly won’t be your easy-to-carry nifty fifty, so if that’s what you’re after, look elsewhere. But it will be a high-quality, well-built, weather-sealed lens that many professionals are after.

Conclusion

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S and the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S lenses are bound to be impressive (even if they have a price tag to match!).

So if either lens seemed appealing, I recommend you keep an eye out for Nikon announcements over the next few days.

Jakumei Optics announces the $735 Dulens APO 85mm F2 for Canon EF, Nikon F mounts

Chinese lens manufacturer Jakumei Optics has announced (translated) the release of the Dulens APO 85mm F2 manual lens for Canon EF- and Nikon F-mount camera systems.

According to the manufacturer, the lens’ apochromatic (APO) design is inspired by ‘Sonnar-style’ lenses, the first of which was created by Dr. Ludwig Bertele in 1929.

The lens is constructed of seven elements in six groups, including two extra-low dispersion elements and one high-refractive index lens. Other features include an aperture range of F2-F16, a nine-blade aperture diaphragm, a 90cm (3ft) minimum focusing distance and a 55mm front filter thread.

The lens is available in black, grey and silver, and is available to purchase on the Shoten Kobo website (translated) for approximately $ 735 (76,950 JPY).

Nikon Z5 initial review

The Nikon Z5 is an entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera that looks and handles almost exactly like its higher-end Z-mount siblings, the Z6 and Z7. It’s built around a stabilized non-BSI 24MP CMOS sensor, which is likely more closely related to the generation of chip found in Nikon’s D750 DSLR, rather than the newer BSI sensor in the Z6.

Slightly stripped down and more stills-focused, the Z5 shares the same 273-point hybrid AF system, Expeed 6 processor and 3.69M-dot OLED viewfinder as the Z6. But niceties like a top plate display are absent. Likewise, the Z5’s max burst rate and video capabilities are considerably less than that of the Z6: 4.5 fps vs. 12 fps and heavily cropped 4K vs. un-cropped, oversampled 4K. But from an image quality and handling standpoint, the two cameras are quite similar.

Nikkei has unveiled the 2019 sales and market share data for digital cameras, and numbers are looking bad across the board:

In 2019, camera units sold dropped by over 22%, which mirrors last year’s 22% decline, and suggests that the shrinking digital camera market won’t stabilize anytime soon.

Nikkei also revealed individual market share numbers:

  • Canon is the industry leader (45.4% market share)
  • Sony is now second (20.2% market share)
  • Nikon comes in to third (18.6% market share)
  • Fujifilm claims fourth (4.7% market share)
  • Panasonic nabs fifth (4.7% market share)

Last July, we reported on market share data, and the biggest news was Nikon’s decline. If you compare the 2019 data (above) to last year’s data (here), you’ll see that Nikon has descended yet again, dropping from the second spot to third (to be replaced by Sony, which increased its market share after a 2018 downturn).

This is in spite of the Nikon Z6, Z7, and Z50 models, which were Nikon’s (seemingly unsuccessful) attempt at refreshing its DSLR-centric camera program to compete better with major mirrorless players. As is clear from the numbers, a few high-performing mirrorless models just weren’t enough to outcompete Sony, a company that has been steadily capturing photographers thanks to a well-rounded APS-C and full-frame camera lineup.

But despite Sony’s impressive array of mirrorless models, it is Canon that managed to capture the largest digital camera market share in 2019, and has continued to eclipse its competitors by showing significant overall market share growth from 2018.

And while Canon has gained a lot of negative press lately thanks to EOS R5 overheating issues, it’s tough to see Canon losing its dominance anytime soon, especially when you consider the company’s “full steam ahead” approach to mirrorless development in 2020, with the release of both the EOS R5 and EOS R6, new RF lenses, and more.

Also notable is the fifth position in the market share rankings, previously occupied by Olympus but now held by Panasonic. This is hardly a surprise, given Olympus’s decision to sell off their camera division, but note that Panasonic is now pretty much on par with Fujifilm (a company that had seen a significant increase of market share in 2018, only to drop again in 2019).

Meike’s 25mm F1.8 manual lens for Nikon Z-mount costs only $75

It’s only been a few days since Meike introduced it’s 85mm F1.8 autofocus prime, but it’s already back with the announcement of another lens, a 25mm F1.8 manual focus prime for Nikon Z-mount cameras.

The lens is constructed of seven elements in five groups, has an aperture range of F1.8 through F16, features a minimum focusing distance of 25cm (9.8”) and uses a nine-blade aperture diaphragm.

The lens measures in at 61mm (2.4”) in diameter, 41mm (1.6”) long and weighs approximately 170g (6oz). Meike notes that the lens is entirely manual to the point that you’ll need to set your camera to release the shutter without a lens, as it won’t recognize a lens is attached.

Meike’s website makes mention of APS-C throughout the entire product page, but also shows the lens attached to the Nikon Z7 we have contacted Meike to confirm whether this lens is exclusively for APS-C or also full-frame

The lens is available now for just $ 75 on Meike’s website. It comes with the lens, front/rear caps, a carry pouch and a microfiber cleaning cloth.
