Earlier this week, Nikkei revealed the latest digital camera market trends.

And for camera manufacturers, things are looking dismal.

The market share breakdown

First, let’s take a look at the market share breakdown:

  • Canon: 40.5% (an increase of 3.9% from 2017)
  • Nikon: 19.1% (a decrease of 2.7%)
  • Sony: 17.7% (a decrease of 0.7%)
  • Fujifilm: 5.1% (an increase of 1.3%)
  • Olympus: 2.8% (an increase of 0.1%)

Notice that Canon had the biggest gains, followed by Fujifilm and Olympus. Nikon’s market share took the biggest hit, with Sony seeing a decrease, as well.

For Nikon, these numbers are not encouraging. The 2.7% drop in market share suggests the company’s latest big move – its leap into the full-frame mirrorless market – hasn’t held up well against the competition.

In some ways, this might be expected. Nikon is a small company compared to competitors such as Canon and Sony, and this puts a clear cap on its resources for innovation. On the other hand, Nikon has remained a dominant player in the digital camera market for decades.

Which begs the question:

Are we about to see Nikon losing its footing?

Unfortunately for Nikon and the other camera manufacturers, the bigger problem has little to do with reshuffled market shares, and everything to do with surging smartphone camera technology.

Because, as Nikkei’s report revealed, digital camera unit sales are down 22% from 2017.

This may come as a surprise to some, who see mirrorless cameras representing the future of photography. After all, mirrorless camera innovation is at an all-time high, with Canon and Nikon just recently joining the fray.

But here’s the issue:

As impressive as mirrorless cameras have become, smartphone cameras are still far more attractive – at least for the casual photographer. They’re smaller than the smallest mirrorless body. You always have them with you. And the simple camera interface, bolstered by features such as ‘swipe to change the exposure,’ make smartphone photography an extremely enticing option.

So in the wake of smartphone camera improvements, would-be DSLR and mirrorless photographers are consistently turning to companies like Google and Apple to satisfy their photography needs.

And it’s a trend we’re likely to see into the future.

Nikon Dropping 1/3rd of Its DSLR Lineup in Move to Mirrorless

As of July 2019, Nikon has eight active DSLR models.

And of these eight models, three of them are rumored to be the end of their camera lineup. In other words, there will be no replacement for these bodies; they’ll be the last of their kind.

Now, Nikon will come out with followup models for the Nikon D5, the Nikon D850, the Nikon D750, and the Nikon D7500.

But for the Nikon D3500, the Nikon D5600, and the Nikon D500, it’s the end of the line. According to Nikon Rumors, these camera models will “likely be replaced by mirrorless models.”

(There is no information on the Nikon Df, which came out in 2013 and hasn’t seen an update since.)

Is this a surprise? Or is it what we’ve come to expect in an increasingly mirrorless world?

As for the mirrorless replacements, we know of two new Nikon mirrorless bodies in the works: a 900 dollar mirrorless body and a D5 equivalent. It’s unlikely that the D5 equivalent will be replacing any DSLR, but is instead meant to expand the appeal of Nikon mirrorless cameras to professional photographers. Whether the 900-dollar mirrorless body is a replacement for the D3500, the D5600, or the D500 remains to be seen.

Notice that two of the three DSLRs slated to be dropped are entry-level – in fact, the D5600 and the D3500 are Nikon’s only entry-level DSLR lines.

What does it say that Nikon plans to end both of them?

Clearly, Nikon wants to keep their advanced and professional-level DSLRs going for at least a few more years. This suits serious photographers who are attached to their DSLR kit and plan to hang on for a while longer.

But beginner photographers won’t have much of a choice, as far as Nikon is concerned. Either they can choose what quickly becomes outdated technology, or they can go mirrorless. And if Nikon’s making this move, Canon may not be far behind.

So for beginner photographers, mirrorless cameras are coming for you…

…whether you like it or not.

Nikon Z6 vs. Panasonic S1 vs. Sony a7 III, which is right for you?

A significant group of camera makers have decided that full frame mirrorless cameras are the sector most likely to remain profitable as the camera market contracts. This leaves us with a selection of cameras priced around $ 2000, all trying to get you hooked on a new system.

We’re going to look at three 24MP full frame mirrorless cameras from Sony, Nikon and Panasonic. The other potential contender here is the Canon EOS R but, while its lens lineup is looking interesting, we think the other three cameras are stronger contenders, so will concentrate on those for now.

This leaves us with a selection of cameras, all trying to get you hooked on a new system

When it comes to their sensors, similarities go way beyond just the headline pixel count. Performance is so close across the trio that you might reasonably conclude that they had similar underlying silicon.

There are differences, of course: Panasonic hasn’t topped its chip with phase detection AF masks, which reduces the (already small) risk of striping artifacts at the cost of slightly lower continuous AF performance. Meanwhile Sony restricts you either to lossy Raw compression that can slightly limit your processing flexibility, or honking-great uncompressed files. But in terms of image quality, lenses are likely to make much more difference to your photos than the brand name that appears on the front of the camera.

Other spec differences

Beyond the sensors, there are a handful of other differences. There are subtle differences in terms of which features each brand provides, with Panasonic generally throwing everything it can at the S1.

All three cameras have in-body image stabilization, the Panasonic and Nikon both feature top-plate display screens, while the Sony and Panasonic offer twin card slots.

Another difference is viewfinder resolution: one of the ways Sony has kept the cost of the a7 III competitive is to stick to a 2.36M dot viewfinder. Nikon’s Z6 has a 3.64M dot finder, which gives a 25% increase in linear resolution. It also does a good job of making the most of this resolution (rather than feeding it a low-res input signal during autofocus, for instance). The Panasonic’s S1 finder gives a further 25% linear res increase, taking it to 5.76M dots.

In terms of handling, the S1 combines a big grip with a large array of direct control buttons and dials, all spread out on the largest of the three bodies. The Sony is the smallest camera and its control layout is the most cramped, as a result (though the grip is still pretty well shaped). The Nikon strikes a balance: offering less direct controls than the Panasonic but managing to fit a decent grip and well-positioned dials onto a well-sized body.

All three makers talk about weather resistance, but none go so far as to state ratings or give guarantees, in that regard. The Panasonic S1 promises the longest shutter life and certainly feels the most substantial of the three. Meanwhile, in his teardown of the Nikon Z7, Roger Cicala at LensRentals said: ‘This is engineering department weather resistance. Anything that can be sealed has been sealed.’

The Panasonic is also the only camera here to offer 4K 60p video capture or 10-bit Log recording: the Sony will capture 8-bit Log internally, while the Z6 will output a 10-bit stream to an external recorder.

Lens choice

Sony has a five-year head start when it comes to creating a lens system for its full-frame E-mount cameras, meaning it offers by far the widest choice of lenses. In addition to its own lens range, which extends to long teles, standard zooms and primes, Sony has also opened the E-mount up, allowing third-party manufacturers to broaden the range. Tamron makes a pair of F2.8 zooms, while Sigma has created E-mount versions of a selection of its Art-series primes (originally designed for DSLRs).

Panasonic is in the next-strongest position: it’s introduced three of its own lenses and joined a system that already has eight Leica primes and zooms. In addition, Sigma has promised L-mount versions of those same Art-series primes.

By going it alone and keeping the specs to itself, Nikon has only its own lenses to offer: 35mm and 50mm primes, 24-70mm zooms in both F4 and F2.8, and a 14-30mm F4 wide-angle. Of course, Nikon also offers an F-mount-to-Z-mount adapter, which allows the use of its existing F-mount lenses (though only the more recent designs with built-in focus motors will offer autofocus).

Various adapters exist for all three systems, offering access to Canon EF lenses, for instance. Generally, though, adapted lenses don’t offer their full performance when adapted (though Nikon’s F-Z adapter does a good job). When sizing-up these systems, it’s worth considering whether your existing lenses can be adapted to any of these new mounts, but not a great idea to go out and buy new lenses with the intention of adapting them (the performance is likely to be inferior and their value will drop significantly when native versions are introduced).

Travel

The Nikon and Sony immediately stand out for travel, since they’re appreciably smaller and lighter than the Panasonic. Of these, the Sony has the best battery life, which is a definite advantage, but all three cameras can be charged over a USB connection, to keep them topped-up along the way.

All three are also easy enough to connect to over Wi-Fi, if you want to share your images while still on tour. The Sony makes life slightly easier for Android users by incorporating NFC (you can just tap your phone to the camera to transfer the image currently being shown), but then loses any bonus points by being the only camera here that doesn’t let you re-process a Raw file, if you decide on different processing settings.

If you like to travel with a zoom, the Sony 24-105mm F4 would probably swing us towards the a7 III: the Nikon 24-70mm F4 is smaller (and very sharp) but the Sony is more flexible and the quality is consistently excellent.

If you prefer to stick with a single prime lens, then it’ll depend on your focal length preference. For instance, Sony makes you pick between the massive (and optically unimpressive) 35mm F1.4 and the rather modest 35mm F2.8, which might be enough to make us choose the Z6 and 35mm F1.8 S or 50mm F1.8 S as our preferred traveling companion.

Video

Nikon has promised a firmware update adding Raw video output to the Z6, which may well put the cat amongst the independent production pigeons. But for the majority of videographers, the Panasonic S1 is probably the pick here.

All three cameras can shoot 4K/30p and 24p from the full width of their sensors, but the Panasonic takes this further by offering 4K/60p from an APS-C crop region. For amateur videographers the S1 offers full 10-bit Hybrid Log Gamma: a ready-for-use high dynamic range video format.

Videographers with more demanding workflows may appreciate the optional firmware upgrade (which will cost extra, depending on when you buy the camera), which makes the Panasonic the only camera here to record 10-bit Log footage internally, and the only one to offer a waveform display for optimizing exposure.

The Nikon comes closest to the Panasonic in terms of making it easy to jump back and forth between stills and video shooting, but if you tend to shoot both in the same session, we’d go for the S1.

Family and moments

All three cameras have eye-detection autofocus, which is especially handy for quick grab-shots of family and friends, and all three work well in this respect. We’ve had the highest success rates with the Sony system, especially in situations with multiple subjects where you need to quickly pick who you want to focus on (it’ll pick the one nearest your selected AF point), but all three cameras do a good job.

The size and weight of the Nikon Z6 and Sony a7 III certainly make it more likely that you’ll have the camera with you at key moments. The retractable Nikon 24-70mm F4 pairs with the Z6 to give a pretty compact do-everything kit, which certainly counts in its favor.

The Panasonic’s HLG video (which captures lifelike footage for playback on high dynamic range TVs) might be a benefit for family movies but, beyond that, there’s not a lot to choose between the three cameras for simple video clips. Video autofocus on the Sony and Nikon cameras is a little more dependable than the Panasonic, but Sony falls behind the others in terms of ease-of-use if you wish to select and track a specific subject.

Landscape

The Panasonic S1 immediately suggests itself for landscape work thanks to its 8-shot high resolution mode. We were impressed at how well it cancels subject movement, making it genuinely useful for landscape shooting. It also has the most comprehensive top-plate display panel, which is handy when working from a tripod.

However, while the Panasonic feels like the most rugged and durable of the three cameras here, there are no formal ratings or guarantees to back that up, so we can’t be certain that the apparent sturdiness is anything more than perception. Meanwhile, we know Nikon has put a lot of effort into its sealing.

All three cameras will do a good job, but to gain the Sony’s full dynamic range you’ll need to shoot uncompressed Raw, which is something of a demerit. Lens selection is likely to be a larger deciding factor, with Sony currently leading the charge thanks to some very good ultra wide-angle lenses.

Formal portraits

There’s little to choose between the three cameras in terms of formal portraits. All three have eye AF systems that make it easy to focus on people, letting you concentrate on your interaction with your subject. In our experience the Sony is most consistent at putting the focus exactly on the eye, rather than the eye-lashes.

Again Sony has the head start in terms of lens selection, though Sigma has said it will make L-mount versions of its lenses, including the 85mm F1.4 Art and 135mm F1.8 Art which, in addition to the Leica 90mm F2, mean that Panasonic users will be pretty well served.

The Z6 can immediately use all of Nikon’s extensive flash system, which extends to both radio-frequency and infrared trigger options. Sony also has a radio-frequency system. There are also plenty of third-party flash triggers available for all three systems.

Lifestyle and people

Lifestyle and people pictures are pretty much the core strength of all these cameras. Their large sensors and choice of wide aperture lenses support the shooting of those Instagram/Stock Photography shots of the picture-perfect lifestyle.

All three cameras now include autofocus that will find and focus on a subject’s eye. The Sony is the easiest of the three, if you need to focus on a specific person, but all three cameras work pretty well.

The Sony has the strongest lens selection, though the promise of a selection of Sigma primes for L-mount means the Panasonic should be pretty flexible, too. To get close to this on the Nikon you quickly have to start thinking in terms of adapting lenses, which isn’t the best long-term investment.

The Sony has the most awkward user interface of the three (particularly in terms of its menu system), but it can be set up so that you rarely need to delve into the full menu.

In terms of usability, we really appreciate the Nikon’s combination of sensible size, comfortable grip and straightforward user interface: it’s the camera we most enjoy shooting with, out of the three.

Candid and street

The Sony a7 III and Nikon Z6’s smaller size help when it comes to discreet shooting. The Sony then builds on this by having the largest selection of small lenses. Its ‘wide’ area AF mode is probably the smartest auto AF system (it’ll not only choose a subject but can be set to then track it through the scene).

The Nikon has plenty going for it, too, though, if there’s a lens you like available. Its touchscreen is more responsive than the Sony’s, as are its physical control dials. It’s also fastest of the three to start up, helping it in the ‘decisive moment’ stakes.

All three cameras shoot attractive out-of-camera JPEGs and all three make it pretty easy to then share these to your phone. And, significantly, all have a usable silent shutter mode, if you really need to be subtle.

The Panasonic S1 is pretty responsive, and its two-axis rear screen means you can shoot portrait orientation at waist level in a way you can’t with the other two. Unfortunately it’s the largest camera and the most likely to be noticed and hence to prompt a response from the people you’re trying to unobtrusively photograph.

Sports and wildlife

None of these models are explicitly designed as sports cameras but are all capable enough all-rounders that you won’t find yourself lost on the sidelines.

The Sony’s autofocus is the most comprehensive (once you’ve chosen which of its area modes gives you the best results). It’s got by far the best fleshed-out range of native telephoto and super-tele lenses. It also has the fastest shooting rate, at up to 10 fps, and has tracking that’s good enough for sports use. This and the camera’s greater battery life make it the strongest choice in this company.

That said, the Nikon isn’t that far behind. Its subject-tracking AF is slower and more awkward to initiate, and less dependable but its other AF modes are very capable. The camera is compatible with Nikon’s extensive range of F-mount DSLR sports lenses, but the performance of these is somewhat variable, and we wouldn’t necessarily recommend heavily investing in non-native lenses, especially for such an expensive class of lenses.

The Panasonic is probably the weakest of the three, both in terms of AF performance (though not by as much as is sometimes suggested) and lens availability. It also has the slowest shooting rate: 6 frames per second with continuous autofocus.

Wedding and events

Wedding and event shooting requires many of the characteristics needed for lifestyle and people shooting, but increases the level of jeopardy, because you only get one chance to get the shot. This puts greater emphasis on speed of operation and it one of the disciplines that hugely benefits from redundant twin-card shooting. This counts against the Nikon for wedding shooting.

The Panasonic has the most extensive array of direct control points and allows enough customization that you can always have the controls you need at your fingertips. You can also save your settings onto a memory card to bring a second (perhaps rented) body into line with your primary camera, or just correct any settings changes you may have made for another job.

If you need to deliver both stills and video, the Panasonic has both the strongest feature set and makes it easiest to quickly switch back and forth between the two modes (you have extensive control over which settings follow over from one to the other).

All this being said, the Sony has the strongest selection of native lenses at this time, and if you’re going to be carrying one or two cameras for eight hours at a time, you might enjoy the Sony’s lighter weight compared to the Panasonic.

Conclusion

We often find these application-focused articles enlightening: forcing yourself to think about how the performance differences affect different types of photography can help reveal which differences are important, and which are only relevant to a handful of users.

The two things that jumped out while writing this piece are that all three cameras are very good (and pretty consistently good at most things), but also that they’re opportunities for a fresh start if this is your first step into full-frame mirrorless. As always, lens availability should play a major role in which camera you choose but, to a large degree, it’s only really Nikon F-mount shooters who will find themselves with any dog in this particular fight. Unless you have multiple high-value long tele Nikon lenses, it might make sense to see a move to full frame mirrorless as a chance to sell-up and start again.

All three cameras are opportunities for a fresh start if this is your first step into full-frame mirrorless

The Sony is, overall, the best all-rounder: it does well at just about everything. Sony has been making full-frame mirrorless cameras longer than anyone, which gives it an advantage both in terms of technological development (especially autofocus) and lens selection. However, its focus on developing new and exciting features has left its user interface looking awkward and clunky by comparison. The Panasonic is a more feature-laden camera and yet is arguably easier to use and configure.

The Nikon Z6 runs the Sony very close, especially with its improved focus operation with firmware v2.0. In many respects we prefer the Nikon’s handling and UI over the Sony’s.

The choice you make is likely to engender a degree of commitment to a new lens system and, having looked at each camera in detail, we’d say thinking long-term about lenses is more important than focusing on the relatively minor differences between these three cameras.

Review of the Nikon D500 for Wildlife and Bird Photography

Fast action is at the heart of Wildlife photography. Wildlife action is fast and unpredictable. Most of the wildlife, including predators, are active during early dawn and late dusk. During the edge of the day, light conditions are low. Having a range of focal lengths is essential to photograph distant wildlife shots.  The weather conditions are harsh in the wild. Moreover, wildlife photographers try to find a camera which is capable of capturing stunning images in every possible situation in the wild.

Nikon crafted a flagship DX-format DSLR camera – the Nikon D500, with excellent high ISO performance, a faster frame rate, and a fast and accurate focus – even in low light.

What it is?

The Nikon D500 camera body weighs around 870g (30 oz) including battery and XD card. It is a crop sensor (DX format) DSLR with a 20.9 MP CMOS sensor. The ISO range is from ISO 100 to ISO 51200. This ISO range is useful in getting better image quality even in low light. In addition to high ISO performance,  frame rate and autofocus performance of the Nikon D500 is excellent. Frames per second for Nikon D500 is whooping 10 FPS. The autofocus is fast and accurate in low light as well. Nikon D500 is fully capable of focussing up to f/8 with center focusing points. These key features make the Nikon D500 excellent for Wildlife and Bird photography.

This article is a field-review of Nikon D500 from the perspective of Wildlife Photographer. This review will help you in understanding how the Nikon D500 performs in the field.

Note: All the wildlife and bird images are photographed in the natural forest with uncontrolled light conditions and within their natural habitat.

Images are captured with the Nikon D500 and the Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 lens with a bean bag. Images are captured either from a safari jeep or from a safari boat.

Controls and ergonomics

AF-ON is useful in back button autofocussing. The focus area selection button is next to the AF-ON button. The Nikon D500 has a touch screen, and it can tilt up to a certain angle.

Controls on the camera feel perfect for wildlife photography.

Here is why:

  • Exposure selection mode – This button helps to select the exposure modes – Manual (M), Aperture Priority(A), Shutter Priority(S) and Programmed Auto (P)
  • Frame rate setting – This dial helps to set the Frame rate as Single ( S), Continuous Low ( CL), Continuous High ( CH ), Timer and Mirror lockup
  • ISO and exposure compensation setting – the ISO button allows you to change the ISO quickly
  • Focus point selection dial – The Focus point selection dial helps select focus point
  • Focus mode and Focus area mode selection – This button, along with Primary and secondary dials ( Dials used to change the shutter speed and Aperture), is used to select focus modes as Single, Continuous and Auto. The same button is used to choose focus areas such as Single, 3D, Dynamic with 25,72 and 153 focal points, Group area and Auto-area
  • Metering selection button – You can select Spot, Center of Matrix metering from this button quickly. In Wildlife photography switching between Matrix and Spot metering is often required depending on the light conditions
  • AF- ON button – This is one of the most useful buttons on the Nikon D500 for wildlife photography. If the bird is standing on a tree branch or takes quick flight, the AF-ON button helps to capture the image with accurate focus.

Build quality and weather sealing

  • The Nikon D500 is mostly made up of magnesium alloy, carbon fiber, and plastic
  • The weight and size of the Nikon D500 are suitable for all day shooting and even hand-holding. The size of the D500 is perfect while you travel in the wilderness and it is perfectly sized while hiking and traveling in the safari vehicle.
  • Body toughness of the Nikon D500 is decent but not great as that of Nikon D5. I find the durability of earlier versions, such as Nikon D200, D300 or D700 was better than D500. However, the build quality of Nikon D500 feels slightly better than the Nikon D7100 or the Nikon D7200 but up to the standard of flagship DX body.
  • Protection against dust and water splash is decent enough
  • I have used Nikon D500 in moderately dusty environments and medium drizzle. The camera performs fine. In fact, I clean the camera after a photoshoot in the rain or heavy dust and I recommend you do so too. This type of weather sealing may be sufficient for mild dust and water splashes, but it doesn’t look good enough in extreme weather.

Ergonomics and handling

  • Ergonomically, the Nikon D500 feels just right. Important command dials for wildlife and bird photography are located on the camera body itself. This helps you to change the settings quickly.
  • Hand-holding, the Nikon D500, feels better. One caveat is the video recording button is located a bit oddly. Despite using it multiple times, I still get confused in locating the video recording button. Apart from the video recording button, you will find the buttons and dials are at the right place with the correct size.

Autofocus performance

Bird action happens fast and can be erratic. Wildlife movement is also fast as it occurs at dawn or dusk. The ability of the camera to focus fast and accurate is a must. With the Multi-Cam 20K Autofocus Sensor module, Nikon D500’s autofocus capabilities are excellent. The Nikon D500 focuses accurately (provided you choose the appropriate focus mode and focus area mode).

I use back button autofocus for focusing. There is a dedicated button for back button autofocus, which is AF-ON.

Hare in the clutter. The Nikon D500 precisely acquires focus on the main object even through the forest clutter.

The Nikon D500 focusses extremely well in following conditions:

  • Daylight
  • Cloudy and rainy weather
  • Low light
  • Distant objects
  • In the forest clutter and forest canopy
  • Dusty and snowy weather
  • Birds in flight and animals in action

In terms of autofocus performance, the Nikon D500 is an absolute winner.

Image quality – Colors, details and dynamic range

Colors, tonal range, and dynamic range of the Nikon D500 images is excellent. Metering of the Nikon D500 is fantastic. It evaluates and produces correct image exposure.

For most of my wildlife images, I use Matrix metering. For some tricky light situations, such as harsh lights or shadows, and if the animal is dark or bright, I switch to Spot metering mode. Matrix metering will give you excellent light exposure.

The dynamic range of the Nikon D500 is improved as compared to earlier versions of the DX format Nikon cameras. If the light is sufficient, I set the exposure compensation to +0.3 or +0.7. Exposure compensation shifts the histogram towards the right. It helps in bringing out the details and enhancing the colors in an image.

The Dynamic Range of the Nikon D500 is wide. The camera was able to capture the eyes and feathers in the shadow. Equally, the Nikon D500 captured the highlighted crest on the head perfectly.

High ISO and low light performance

Image quality and ISO performance in low light are much improved in the Nikon D500. The camera ISO has a range from ISO 100 to ISO 51200. In controlled light conditions or lab test, the Nikon D500 Images may look less noisy. However, when you are shooting with the Nikon D500 in the real jungle and natural light conditions, you have to be realistic when you select your ISO.

I use a maximum ISO up to 6400 in most cases, and for some rare wildlife moments, I go up to ISO 12800. In the forest, especially during the early morning or late evening, an ISO of up to 6400 helps.  With ISO 6400, I can get a sharp image with excellent dynamic range. The colors are also good. These images are perfectly usable for big prints and web-sized images.

Whereas, if you go ridiculously high on ISO such as ISO 51200, you will still get an image, but you will have to apply Noise reduction in post-processing. Also, the image loses the fine details. If you are going to print the image, select the reasonable high ISO at the available light conditions.

Bottom line

The Nikon D500 has improved high ISO and low light performance. Up to maximum ISO 6400, images are great. The sharpness and colors are fantastic and noise levels are low and manageable in post-processing.

White balance

The auto white balance of the Nikon D500 is accurate. The camera produces white balance without any shift in color or tint. All the color temperatures look right.

Other than Auto White balance, there are different white balances available such as Daylight and Shade. All produce good results.

For wildlife and bird photography, I recommend you choose Auto White Balance. It will help to reproduce the correct white balance for your images. If you want to add creative effects, you can always tune the raw image in post-processing.

Bonus: My D500 camera settings for wildlife and bird photography

  • Image Quality: RAW
  • NEF (RAW) Recording: NEF RAW Compression: Loose-less compressed and Bit Depth: 14-Bit Depth
  • Color space: Adobe RGB
  • Picture Control: Standard (SD)
  • ISO: Auto ISO with Maximum ISO as 6400 (It will depend on the lighting conditions, but I find 6400 is the right balance for image quality and low noise)
  • Autofocus mode: AF-C (Continuous)
  • Autofocus Area mode: Dynamic (25 points) or Group area focus
  • Exposure mode: Manual (Shutter speed and Aperture will be set based on the available light in the environment). You can also use Aperture priority as an Exposure Mode.
  • White Balance: Auto
  • Metering: Matrix
  • For autofocus, use Back button autofocus: AF-ON
  • Shutter release mode: Continuous High CH (10 FPS) or Continuous Low CL (6 FPS)

Conclusion and recommendations

Australian Nikon ambassador Dale Sharpe, 36, killed in tragic roadside accident

Dale Sharpe, an Australian storm-chaser, landscape photographer and Nikon Ambassador has passed away after a tragic roadside accident while in the United States.

According to The Wichita Eagle, a local paper in Kansas, Sharpe was killed when he was hit by a vehicle after suffering car problems of his own.

The report says Sharpe was traveling northbound on highway K-2 when his vehicle made contact with a deer and ultimately came to a stop in the southbound lane due to the damage not long after midnight on June 20, 2019, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash report.

In an effort to seek safety while making a call for assistance, Sharpe moved to the side of the road. Shortly after, a vehicle traveling southbound attempted to avoid Sharpe’s broken-down vehicle when it swerved off the road and into the same ditch Sharpe had attempted to run to for safety. Sharpe was taken to Harper County Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:14 a.m. local time.

The driver of the vehicle who hit Sharpe was unharmed. A Kansas Highway Patrol spokesperson told The Wichita Eagle that the 45-year-old man driving the vehicle was ‘driving in accordance to the law and will not be charged.’

Sharpe, who was 36 years old, is survived by his wife, Karlie Russell, who served as a partner in their photography business, DK Photography, as well as his daughter, Mia.

In a statement to DPReview, Nikon Inc. said ‘We are deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Dale Sharpe. He was a talented photographer and a valued member of our community. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends and all those that he inspired through his work.’

Two separate GoFundMe campaigns (’Bring Dale Home’ and ‘Memorial Fund for Dale Sharpe DK Photography’) have been set up for the Russell family. Per the DK Photography Facebook post, DPReview did not contact anyone to verify the GoFundMe campaigns out of respect for their privacy.

Nikon invests in computer vision and deep learning startup ‘wrnch’

Nikon has announced a $ 7.5 million investment in Canadian computer vision and deep learning startup wrnch, Inc. Wrnch was founded in 2014 and ‘uses deep learning to develop and provide tools and software development kits (SDKs) that enable computers to see and understand human movement and activity.’

On its website the company says about itself it is ‘Teaching Cameras To Read Human Body Language.’

Nikon says the move is in line with its medium-term management plan which is designed to expand not only its business-to-consumer but also business-to-business imaging activities. The company is hoping to create synergies by combining resources with wrench and ultimately expand the range of its imaging business.

Nikon is aiming to enhance its automatic shooting solutions for the sports market by fusing its optical technologies, automatic tracking shooting technologies from its subsidiary Mark Roberts Motion Control Limited and wrnch’s pose estimation technologies.

In addition the company is looking into providing ‘new imaging experiences’ with technologies such as artificial intelligence. In the statement Nikon also says it is open to ‘making’ further use of its optical technologies and collaborating with companies that offer their own innovative solutions and technologies.’

Techart TZE-01 is the world’s first Sony E to Nikon Z AF lens adapter

Chinese accessory maker Techart has announced the TZE-01, the first autofocus adapter for using Sony E-mount lenses with Nikon’s Z series cameras. Techart describes the adapter’s design as having been ‘difficult’ due to the Nikon Z-mount’s flange distance being just 2mm shorter than the Sony E-mount.

The Techart TZE-01 features a PCB sandwiched between the electronic connectors on both sides of the adapter, making it possible to use both the Sony E-mount Auto Aperture and Auto Focus lens functions, even when using the Nikon Z’s Face & Eye detection mode.

The TZE-01 finds room for a PCB to ‘translate’ between the Nikon and Sony communication protocols, allowing Nikon cameras to autofocus E-mount lenses.

Depending on which Sony E-mount lens is used, Techart claims its adapter allows the use of phase-detect AF to offer autofocus accuracy and speed ‘very close to (if not better) [than] native Z-mount lenses.’ The company claims other functions, including lens-based image stabilization are also supported.

At this time, the Techart adapter works with Sony E-mount AF lenses from Sigma, Sony, and Tamron / Zeiss. The adapter is shipped with a lens dock for firmware upgrades that will add additional lens support in the future. The TZE-01 adapter is available to purchase for $ 249 USD from TechartPro.com.


Techart unveils the World’s First Sony E to Nikon Z Autofocus Adapter with a thickness of 2mm

Nikon Z6 and Z7 scoring updated to reflect firmware v2.0

The latest firmware for the Nikon Z6 and Z7 makes a significant difference to the cameras’ usability and focus performance, so we’ve revisited the scoring for both cameras to address the improvements.

We found the Eye AF system significantly improves the ease of shooting with the Z6 and also overcomes many of our concerns about the ability to fine-focus for portraiture. These improvements greatly change the user experience and are enough to bump the camera’s overall score up to 89%, making it the joint high-scorer in its class.

The change to the Z7’s score is less pronounced. This is partly because its 45MP sensor makes the slight inaccuracy of the Eye AF system more significant but also because the update doesn’t appear to make a big improvement to the camera’s low-light AF performance, which was a major factor in the camera’s AF score.

Nikon Releasing 900 Dollar Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera?

According to Nikkei, Nikon plans to release a mirrorless camera before the 2019 fiscal year is out.

And it’ll likely be a budget option, one that comes in at about half the price of the Nikon Z6.

Here’s the direct (translated) quote from Nikkei:

Nikon will introduce a new mid-price mirrorless camera product in fiscal 2019. The same interchangeable lens can be used in the product that corresponds to a sister model such as the high-end model “Z7” launched by the company in the autumn of [2018]. It is expected that the price will be in the 100,000 yen range, which is easier for the general consumer to pick up than the leading 200,000 to 400,000 yen model. The aim is to develop the demand of users other than existing enthusiasts.

Regarding price: 100,000 yen falls around 900 dollars, which would be a dramatic reduction in price compared to the Z7 and even the Z6, Nikon’s two current full-frame mirrorless models.

A 900 dollar full-frame mirrorless option would likely be welcomed by those DSLR shooters who just can’t afford the current Nikon mirrorless prices, but are looking for something lighter than their current DSLR setup.

But we also have to ask:

What Z-level features will Nikon leave behind in order to cut costs?

First of all, we can’t be sure the new mirrorless option is full frame. The original report doesn’t say this outright. But the claim that the new product “corresponds to a sister model such as the high-end model ‘Z7′” suggests the new camera won’t be fundamentally different. And an APS-C Z mirrorless body would be fundamentally different.

But even if the camera is full frame, other important features might be dropped.

For instance, might we see the loss of an EVF? Personally, I would see this as deeply frustrating. Mirrorless EVFs are one of the strengths of mirrorless systems. I wouldn’t like to see it go.

Nikon D3500 vs. Canon T7: Which is better?

Nikon D3500 vs. Canon T7: Which one should you buy?

You don’t need to know much about photography to know that Canon and Nikon are two of the major brands in the business of selling photographic equipment. And there’s a good reason why those names have so many fans: they make really good cameras and lenses, and have done so for generations.

It makes sense that many beginning photographers would turn to those same companies when looking for an inexpensive DSLR for the first time. The Canon EOS Rebel T7 / 2000D and Nikon D3500 are certainly two of the least expensive interchangeable lens cameras (meaning the lens comes off as opposed to being fixed to the body) you’ll find on the market now: at the time of writing, they’re each selling for about $ 400 with an 18-55mm kit lens.

So which one is better for a beginning photographer? We think that the Nikon D3500 will be the better choice for most people. The bundled 18-55mm F3.5-5.6G VR kit lens is superior to Canon’s, battery life is more robust and users who plan to do significant post-processing will find Raw files more malleable. But as usual, there’s more to the story than just that.

Read on for a detailed feature-by-feature comparison and find out how we came to our conclusion.

Photo quality vs. a smartphone

If you’re considering either of these cameras, there’s likely one question at front of mind: How much better will it be than my smartphone? The answer is a bit complicated.

Both the D3500 and T7 use 24 megapixel APS-C sensors, which are many times larger than anything found in a modern smartphone. Bigger sensors come with benefits: more flexibility processing image files, and all things being equal, better low light performance.

But things aren’t exactly ‘equal’ anymore. Smartphones are now using computational techniques to reach beyond the limitations of a smaller sensor: Night Sight in the Google Pixel is an example of this. In short, the advantages of a big sensor are somewhat diminished, especially if your photos will only ever be viewed on a computer screen or a mobile device.

However, 24MP of resolution comes in handy if you’d like to make large prints, or if you plan on making substantial post-processing edits. And there’s the potential for zoom: the bundled kit lens provides a bit more reach than the telephoto lens on most smartphones, and there’s always the option to buy additional, longer zoom lenses.

The advantages of a big sensor are somewhat diminished, especially if your photos will only ever be viewed on a computer screen or a mobile device

And then there’s bokeh: the lovely blurry background effect imitated by portrait mode. Without getting too in-depth, smartphones with portrait mode will generally produce synthetic bokeh that looks close enough to the real deal to satisfy most users, and in many cases will produce a stronger blurred effect than either camera’s kit lens is capable of.

If highly convincing bokeh is a priority though, you can add an inexpensive 50mm F1.8 lens to either camera and the results will (for now, at least) outperform a smartphone. And if you don’t have a recent smartphone with a good portrait mode, a camera with additional lens will cost quite a bit less than a $ 1000 flagship smartphone.

This is a long way of saying that yes, the 24MP sensor in either the D3500 or T7 is better than what’s in your smartphone, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to the image quality advantage that you might expect.

Photo quality vs. each other

Comparing the two cameras, you won’t see any dramatic differences in image quality. The Nikon offers a higher ISO sensitivity, which will allow for shooting in very dark conditions without a flash (and quite a bit of unpleasant splotchy noise as a result). Some people prefer Canon’s out-of-camera color rendition and tendency toward deeper reds, but the differences are subjective and subtle.

The Nikon does offer more malleable Raw files if you intend to push shadows in post-processing, but it’s not something we find a lot of beginning photographers wanting to do.

Each camera sells with an 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 lens, which will be wide enough for landscapes and long enough to frame a head-and-shoulders portrait. While they both offer stabilization and cover roughly the same focal range, the lenses are quite different in age: Nikon’s 18-55mm is about three years old, surprisingly sharp and collapsable when it’s not in use. Canon’s lens dates back to 2011 and isn’t as sharp.

Viewfinder and Live View

Both the T7 and D3500 offer 3″ 921k-dot non-touchscreens primarily for image review and navigating menus. It’s possible to use the screens for still image composition and shooting, but live view (as it’s called) on both cameras uses a much slower autofocus system. Shooting with your eye to the optical viewfinder means you don’t get a live preview of your exposure, but you do get a faster autofocus system.

The viewfinders on these cameras are comparatively small, and less comfortable to use than that of a bigger, more expensive DSLR. There’s plenty to be said for having an optical viewfinder at all: they’re much easier to use in bright light than a rear screen, and provide a sense of ‘being there’ that many photographers prefer.

There’s no clear winner in this category: neither provides a great viewfinder, and for live image composition on an LCD (perhaps even with tap-to-focus!), you’ll want to look elsewhere.

Video

There’s not much to separate the T7 and the D3500 in terms of video recording capabilities. Both offer 1080p recording; the T7 provides up to 30 fps, the D3500 records up to 60 fps, which will represent fast motion better. However, you’ll be using live view to record video on these cameras and as we’ve already established, autofocus while shooting via the rear screen is not very good.

Both will record decent video clips, but if you own a smartphone that was launched in the last couple of years, chances are your phone will do just as well (or in some respects, even better).

Wireless image sharing

As is required of a digital camera in 2019, both the T7 and D3500 provide the means to beam images wirelessly from your camera to your phone. They go about this in slightly different ways. Canon has built Wi-Fi into the T7 which will connect with the company’s app. If you have an Android phone with NFC, the connection process is made even simpler.

Nikon takes a different approach, including only Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi. This allows the camera to maintain the wireless connection and transfer 2MP images as you’re shooting, something not possible with Wi-Fi. The downside is that 2MP is your only image size option: which to be fair, is big enough for social media and 4×6″ prints.

For most users, the benefits of the constant connection will probably outweigh the need for high-resolution images, and we’d recommend the Nikon if easy image transfer and sharing is a priority.

Battery

At last! A category in which either of these cameras will run circles around a smartphone. If you rely mostly on the optical viewfinder for shooting, the T7 or the D3500 will get you through days of shooting without ever flashing the dreaded low-battery signal. The T7 is officially rated to 500 shots per charge (which tends to be lower than most people’s real-life results) which is quite good, so the D3500’s 1550 shots per charge rating is insanely good.

Relying heavily on live view or recording a lot of video footage will drain the battery faster, but as we’ve established, these aren’t strong suits for either camera so that’s kind of a moot point.

The D3500 comes out on top but both cameras are really winners here.

Conclusion

If you tally up the ‘points’ for the D3500 and you’ll see how we drew our conclusion that it’s the better pick between the two. However, the two cameras are incredibly similar in most ways, so it’s really only details like a nicer 18-55mm kit lens and incredibly robust battery life that tip the scale.

It’s pretty remarkable what both of these cameras offer for their price, but it’s also worth noting what you aren’t getting, like a touchscreen, faster autofocus in live view, robust continuous autofocus, subject tracking for sports and action photography, 4K video… you get the idea.

If any of those features strike you as important, and you aren’t too attached to having an optical viewfinder, then it would be in your interest to consider options like the Canon EOS M100: we think it’s actually your best bet for under $ 500.

But there is something quite appealing about an optical viewfinder, the ergonomics of a DSLR and the way a traditional camera engages you in the process of taking pictures that smartphones can’t touch. If it’s these qualities you’re after, then we think the D3500 is well worth your time.
