Up until now, Nikon has stayed out of the mirrorless APS-C (crop-sensor) camera space. They’ve let Sony and Fujifilm take the lead with their respective a6000 and X-T lineups. Even Canon, which stands at the back of the mirrorless pack, has produced its ‘M’ series.

But things are changing in the digital camera world, especially as DSLRs lose ground to mirrorless systems and DSLR lineups get shelved. Nikon, a (relatively) small company surrounded by big players, has pushed innovation, bringing out the full-frame Z6 and Z7 last fall. The Z7 immediately made waves in the mirrorless camera world with its 45.7-megapixel sensor and impressive low light performance.

And now Nikon is trying to do it again.

Recent rumors indicate that Nikon will soon be entering into the APS-C mirrorless world with the Nikon Z50, a mirrorless body with a 20-megapixel sensor.

Other reported specs include a 3-inch LCD, an 11 frame-per-second continuous shooting speed, and an electronic viewfinder.

For Nikon DSLR photographers who have been thinking about moving to mirrorless, this will come as a welcome surprise, especially if you’ve been put off by the high price of the Nikon Z6 and Z7. This new camera is aimed at the enthusiast crowd, with its electronic viewfinder and 11 fps continuous shooting speed putting it a cut above entry-level bodies.

The 20-megapixel sensor is a step down in resolution from competing Canon, Fujifilm, and Sony models, but the camera could impress in terms of autofocus and action shooting, possibilities that are hinted at with the 11 fps continuous shooting speed.

The Nikon Z50 should also give you access to the Nikkor Z lenses. The lineup is currently very heavy on wide and standard lenses, but that’s bound to change as Nikon dedicates more and more resources to its mirrorless engineering. And the Z50 rumors come alongside talk of two new Nikon Z lenses: the Z-Nikkor 16-55mm f/3.5-6.3 DX lens and the Z-Nikkor 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 DX lens.

(Note the ‘DX’ label: Neither of these lenses can be used on full-frame mirrorless bodies.)

These are kit lenses, through and through, and it remains to be seen how they perform. But I have high hopes for Nikon’s mirrorless lineup, especially as it begins to round itself out.

Nikon Z 85mm F1.8 S sample gallery

Nikon’s latest Z-series prime is one of its most impressive, offering very similar optical characteristics to the Z 50mm F1.8 S which we liked so much when we tested it back in January. Providing a traditional portrait focal length and moderately fast aperture, the Z 85mm is fairly pricey by the standards of an F1.8 prime, but it’s hard to argue with the image quality, at any price.

We’ve been shooting with the Z 85mm F1.8 S for a few days, to see what it can do. Take a look through our full gallery of sample images.

DULENS APO 85mm F2 is a new manual prime lens for Canon EF, Nikon F camera systems

A new Chinese optics manufacturer has released the DULENS APO 85mm F2, a manual medium telephoto prime for Canon EF and Nikon F camera systems.

Although not much is known about DULENS itself, Newsshooter is reporting it’s been told that the optical engineer behind DULENS is the same who helped bring the NiSI F3 and MAVO prime lenses to life.

The lens, which is inspired by the Zeiss Sonnar series, is constructed of seven elements in six groups and includes an Apochromatic element to reduce chromatic aberration. It measures 5.8cm (2.28in) long, weighs 350g (12.35oz), features a 29-degree field-of-view, uses a 55mm front filter thread and has a minimum focusing distance of 90cm (35.43in).

Below are a number of high-resolution sample images shared on the product listing. These were shot with the lens on a Lumix S1 using an EF adapter:

The lens is available to pre-order in black and silver varieties for Canon EF and Nikon F camera systems. It’s currently listed for ¥2999 (approximately $ 420) on Chinese retailer Taobao, but Newsshooter says the company intends to release the lens in the United States and Europe market for $ 599.

Yasuhara announces Anthy 35mm F1.8 lens for Canon RF, Nikon Z and Sony E mount cameras

Budget Japanese optics manufacturer Yasuhara has announced the Anthy 35mm F1.8 manual lens for full-frame mirrorless camera systems.

The Anthy 35mm F1.8 lens (translated) is constructed of nine elements in seven groups and features a nine-blade aperture diaphragm with an F1.8 to F16 range. The front filter thread is 52mm, it has a minimum focusing distance of 40cm (15.75in) and the lens weighs 409g (14.3oz).

The lens is entirely manual and doesn’t feature electrical contacts, meaning no metadata will be sent to the camera it’s attached to and, if applicable, the ‘release without lens’ setting will need to be turned on.

The lens is set for a fall 2019 release and will be available in Canon RF, Nikon Z and Sony E mounts. No pricing information has been given at this time. We have contacted Yasuhara and will update this article if we hear back about pricing information.

We haven’t heard much about Yasuhara in the past and its lens lineup is rather limited, so we can’t attest to the image quality or durability of its lenses, but the company recently celebrated its seventh year in business. Yasuhara also has Anthy-branded 50mm and 85mm lenses in development (translated).

Confirmed: Leica, Nikon and Olympus won’t be attending Photokina 2020

In a press release on its website, Photokina has confirmed that Nikon, Leica and Olympus have all opted out of attention the 2020 trade show.

The press release, titled ‘Photokina 2020: An Industry in Transformation, a Decisive Chance for the Future,‘ buries the lede by first elaborating on the current state of the camera market and following it up with the significance of a trade show such as Photokina. The press release starts out saying:

‘The imaging industry is currently undergoing massive changes, which also have an impact on Photokina as the industry’s leading trade fair – and this in a dimension never seen before. While on the one hand the classic camera market reports strongly declining sales and turnover figures, the enjoyment of photography continues to grow – with a positive effect on the demand for pictures.’

Gerald Böse, President and Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse GmbH, goes on to say that Photokina ‘represents a unique opportunity’ and notes that ‘[Photokina is] relying on the major players of the industry to make the greatest possible use of this opportunity.’

It’s not until two paragraphs later the press release confirms three ‘major players’ won’t be attending the trade show after first expressing gratitude to multiple other manufacturers for attending:

‘”We look forward to strong demand and applications from both the new and the classic segments of companies like Canon, CEWE, GoPro, Sony, Panasonic, Kodak Alaris, Sigma, Tamron, Carl Zeiss, Hasselblad, Hahnemühle, Arri, Rode Mikrophones, DJI and Insta360,” says Christoph Werner, Vice President of Koelnmesse. These are contrasted by cancellations, including from Leica, Nikon and Olympus.’

The press release goes on to say these cancellations change nothing for Photokina 2020 and ensures that the show will go on, but losing three major manufacturers in a single year is never a good sign. We saw this happen with PMA years ago and once a few left the expo, the rest quickly followed.

Nikon Announces D6 in the Making, Plus Rumored D6 Specs

Well, it’s official:

The Nikon D6 is under development, as announced by Nikon earlier this week.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, because the Nikon D6 has been whispered about for months, including a lengthy list of rumored specifications.

But it’s nice to know the D6 is on its way.

Unfortunately, Nikon’s announcement includes no details on the D6, except that it will be the company’s “most advanced DSLR to date.” This may be a reference to the D6’s autofocus system, which is rumored to be better than even the Nikon D5’s incredible system.

Note that the Nikon D5 is famed for its autofocus capabilities. The D5 AF system featured 153 focus points, including 99 cross-type points. Better autofocus capabilities would be an exciting upgrade for action photographers, especially if it includes some form of Live View autofocus to rival Canon’s Dual Pixel system.

The announcement also indicated that the D6 will be a DSLR rather than a mirrorless camera. This puts to rest any speculation about Nikon’s flagship system moving to mirrorless, though rumors suggest the D6 will have several mirrorless-style features.

For instance, the D6 will likely include in-body image stabilization, which Nikon included in its full-frame mirrorless bodies, the Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7. The camera may also have a high-performing silent shooting mode, which will be appreciated by photographers who need to remain discrete at events.

Now, the Nikon D6 is a professional’s camera, competing primarily with the Canon 1DX Mark II (and its likely successor, the Canon 1DX Mark III). The Nikon D6 line is primarily designed with professional sports photographers in mind, hence the incredible autofocus capabilities. It will undoubtedly feature a rugged body and lightning-fast continuous shooting speed, as well.

The Nikon D6 will likely begin shipping in early 2020, which will give professional sports photographers plenty of time to get used to its capabilities before the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

So if you’re a professional sports photographer, don’t worry:

The D6 is in the works, and it’s guaranteed to impress.

Nikon Z 24mm F1.8 S to ship in October for $1000

Nikon has formally announced the Nikkor Z 24mm F1.8 for its full-frame mirrorless system. The wide-angle prime becomes Nikon’s seventh native Z-mount lens, and is one of three remaining lenses on the roadmap for 2019 – the others being the 70-200mm F2.8 and the much-hyped 58mm F0.95 Noct.

The 24mm F1.8 offers dust and drip resistance, and is built with one extra-low dispersion and four aspherical elements. Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coat is also present to reduce ghosting and flare. Additionally, the lens provides the ability to assign aperture and exposure compensation control to the focus ring, and Nikon claims that the lens boasts reduced focus breathing.

The Nikkor Z 24mm F1.8 S will ship in mid to late October for $ 1000.

Nikon working on 120-300mm F2.8E full-frame tele-zoom lens

Nikon is working on a telephoto zoom lens for its full-frame F-mount DSLRs: the AF-S Nikkor 120-300mm F2.8E FL ED SR VR. From those acronyms we can safely say that it will be stabilized and have ED and fluorite elements, though ‘SR’ is a new one. We think it’s safe to say that this lens will be rugged and sealed against moisture and dust.

From the photo above you can spot the usual set of switches for a pro-level lens: AF/MF, focus distance limiter, VR mode, memory recall/AF-L/AF-On and focus beep.

Nikon promises more information and pricing on this sports-oriented lens later this year.

Nikon developing D6 professional DSLR

Nikon has announced the D6, its forthcoming professional DSLR. Nikon and Canon tend to launch their flagship cameras around the time of the Olympic Games, which are occurring next summer in Tokyo.

Nikon has issued the photo above, and said it will be its ‘most advanced DSLR to date.’

Beyond this, it has shared no information about the camera, which it says will come at a later date. Now the countdown begins to see whether Canon will also update its top sports model with a DSLR or a mirrorless camera, or whether we’ll need to wait another four years for that.

Nikon shares D6 development teasers on social media before taking them down

Earlier today, Nikon Europe published a number of posts to social media teasing the development of its D6 camera, the not-yet-official next generation flagship DSLR from Nikon.

The posts, which were shared on Nikon Europe’s official Twitter and a Facebook account called ‘NikonLifeEU’, all teased the arrival of the D6 in text and included an attached video as well. As seen in the screenshots, shared with permission from Nikon Rumors, the two Twitter posts read:

‘The newly announced #D6 development will reinforce Nikon DSLR’s advantage in #sports#photojournalism.’

The Facebook post also shared a video, but read:

‘The newly announced #D6 development will reinforce Nikon’s DSLR’s advantage in sports photo journalism. Top Pro and #D5 user Joel Maryland talks about how Nikon’s cutting edge technology has helped him stay ahead of the game. Stay tuned for more from #Nikon!’

As noted by Nikon Rumors reader br0xibear, the video posted alongside the text wasn’t new footage, but a video of Nikon Europe ambassador Joel Marklund talking about shooting with the Nikon D5 at the Olympics. So, while there was no explicit mention of the D6 in the video, the text is very clear a Nikon D6 DSLR is on the way.

We have contacted Nikon to confirm whether or not the ‘NikonLifeEU’ Facebook page is its official account, but considering it too removed the development teasers and the rest of its post history mirrors the official Nikon Europe Twitter account, it seems likely to be the case.
