Nikon is celebrating the production of its 60 millionth Nikkor lens for its SLR cameras. The lens series was introduced in 1959 with the launch of the Nikkor S Auto 5cm f/2, while SWM was first incorporated in the Ai AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8D IF-ED in 1996. This closely follows a similar announcement marking its 55th million lens in September 2010.

Nikon D5100 announced and previewed
Nikon has unveiled the D5100 upper-entry-level DSLR and we’ve prepared a full preview of the camera, detailing its features. Sitting above the D3100, it includes a 16.2 MP CMOS sensor much like that in the D7000, 1080p movie capability and a side-articulated 921K dot 3.0" tilt/swivel LCD. The D5100 also becomes the first Nikon DSLR to be able to apply special processing filters to stills and video. The company has also introduced the ME-1 external microphone. The camera will be available from this month as a kit with the 18-55mm VR lens for 9.95 while the microphone will retail at 9.99. We’ve had a production-spec sample of the camera, so have shot our standard test scene and some real-world samples to accompany our preview.

Nikon Monarch ATB: Reference Value Binos, Part 3
PART 3 of 3: Excellent quality binoculars are indispensable for many activities to include tactical operations, general recreation, watching sporting events, wildlife watching, and hunting. In this three part video series, I take an in-depth look at features, terminology (simplified), and specifications that will make a difference in the performance of your selected binos. My current reference standard for high value and yet super high quality medium-format binos are the excellent “Nikon Monarch ATB” series. These Monarch 8×42 and 10×42 binos compare very favorably against MUCH more expensive binoculars and they are generally THE class leader against all comers in terms of weight at a very light 21.5 oz (subject to change). These Nikons are some of the most popular binos in the world today and have amassed an impressive track record of dependable performance and they have many fans the world over. They offer an incredible quality level and set of features for around 0: high quality and precision-ground Eco glass, phase-corrected and fully multi-coated optics, tough quality construction with useful rubber armor, total waterproofness, extendable eyecups that stay in place, a stiff hinge to maintain alignment, outstanding optical resistance to light flare-ups (from night urban lighting), an incredible 25 year generous replacement warranty, and they are offered in some great colors (black, tan and green camo patterns). A minor downside are lens covers that don’t fit tight …

Whatup? Here’s my tutorial for eliminating the jello effect caused by CMOS’s rolling shutter. This tutorial is set up using Nikon D90 footage (720, 24fps) so you might have to adjust the speed up percentage for your footage. The render times are pretty long, but it works pretty well. (Harper helped a little.) Enjoy! MikeyMike Project files here: www.mikeymike.com
