Banksy Tags Manhattan: Fresh New Graffiti Live from NYC

08 Oct

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Street Art & Graffiti. ]

banksy manhattan no graffiti

Making his way through the boroughs of New York, the infamous but mysterious interventionist Banksy is broadcasting new stencils, installations and mixed media work all month as a street-artist-in-residence in America’s largest city.

banksy new york accent

In Midtown Manhattan, his figures, phrases, plays on words and signage can be found defacing (or at least: refacing) concrete walls and garage doors in Banksy’s typical self-referential style. From there, he has moved onto Williamsburg and otherBrooklyn neighborhoods, and no one knows quite where he will pop up next.

banksy the musical

As he often does in new destinations, Banksy is actively toying with New York City culture and tropes, from its stylized graffiti fonts to its world-famous Broadway shows (his contribution to existing tags above: “The Musical” stenciled alongside each).

banksy mobile truck art

Branching out from two-dimensional pieces, here is “a New York delivery truck converted into a mobile garden (includes rainbow, waterfall and butterflies).” This piece in particular is also actually moving around the city: “The truck will visit a different location every evening from dusk,” starting in an East Village location.

banksy big truck mural

Perhaps best of all, this time Banksy also provides wonderful faux-vintage commentary on this series (titled: Better In Than Out) in the form of audio tour files you can click to play on Banksy’s website – or by calling a special toll-free number found spray-painted next to a number of these pieces: 1-800-656-4271. Of course, as always and almost as quickly as they appear, many of his works are being erased or defaced by city workers or other street artists – it goes with the territory.

Live Between Buildings: Narrow Micro-Homes Fill City Gaps

05 Sep

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

narrow home competition entry

Playful yet thought-provoking, this project asks: what do we do with small leftover spaces in cities … particularly in urban areas where even a few square feet of real estate can cost a fortune?

narrow house competition winners

Live between Buildings by Ole Robin Storjohann and Mateusz Mastalski won first place in a Loft 2 competition held by FAKRO, which challenged contestants to rethink loft living and material efficiency without sacrificing light and space.

narrow interstitial house concept

Their various prototype proposals have nearly no ground footprint, being instead suspended in part or entirely between existing structures. In testing the idea, they took actual buildings and voids, abstracted and simplified their forms, all to show how such interventions would work in major cities from New York and London to Amsterdam and Tokyo.

narrow home architectural entries

A wide selection of shapes suggests many possibilities using modular pieces, including half-serious and semi-practical suggestions, such as egg and X shapes, as well as outright silly ones, like a Christmas-tree home or cloud-bubble house, more intended just to illustrate the potential flexibility.

narrow home case studies

Out of a variety of compelling entries, just why did this pair win the award? “The Jury appreciated the way the basic idea – creating small infill-dwellings in-between existing buildings – has been worked out in extended research, thus providing models for various housing types in different cities. The plan can be realized entirely out of roof windows (with some technical adjustments) and offers an innovative idea for using empty spaces in urban fabric. The possibility of shapes is endless. The project was very beautifully drawn and communicated on a single sheet, the section describing both the architectural idea and the exciting occupation of the proposed building.””

Street Retouch: Bus Riders Get Live Photoshop Treatment

24 Jun

[ By Steph in Art & Photography & Video. ]

Street Retouch Live Photoshop 1

Unsuspecting travelers waiting to catch a ride were shocked to see their own photos integrated into humorous advertisements on the walls of the bus stop shelter. Berlin-based Photoshop artist Erik Johansson took surreptitious photos from a van across the street, altered them in Photoshop, and projected the edited images onto the ad space on the shelter.

Johansson had to work fast, getting only a few minutes to take the photo, make his changes, insert it into a funny pre-made background and transmit it to the bus shelter. He also filmed the reactions of the surprised subjects, who suddenly found themselves integrated into ads for fictional films and products.

Street Retouch Prank was developed for Adobe Creative Days, an annual event that showcases creativity and innovation using Adobe products. It may be a prank, but it’s also an interesting look at how interactive the future of advertising is likely to be.

Flickr: Yahoo CEO sorry for ‘no such thing as pro photographers’ comment, Pro accounts live on

23 May

marissa_new4.jpg

Much of the fallout surrounding Flickr’s massive updates this Monday continues to center around the legacy ‘Pro’ accounts and a contentious statement from Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer: ‘There’s no such thing as Flickr Pro today because […] there’s really no such thing as professional photographers anymore.’ She apologized today for her ‘misstatement’, and it appears that existing Flickr Pro account holders will now be able to take advantage of unlimited storage. Read all about it at connect.dpreview.com.

convertible off grid car

Forget the trailer and start trailblazing – this emission-free and fully-electric vehicle can juice up just like its Tesla cousins, but can also use photovoltaics and solar sails to recharge well off the beaten path.

convertible trailer free home

Picture the three-wheeled Ecco as the latest in a long-standing series of streamlined and transforming vehicles for dwelling  in, starting with Dymaxion and continuing to Airstream and through Volkswagen. Except, for the first time, conventional fuel is not required.

A light aluminum-and-class frame unfolds, stretching fabric into place and expanding the living space when stationary. This action also allows the driver to tilt up the sun-gathering elements for maximum charging capabilities.
