Leica unveils limited run of 100 red Leica M (Typ 262) bodies

Leica has released a series of 100 limited edition Leica M bodies with red anodized top and base plates. The company says the red hue of the cameras makes a bold statement, though some might argue the nearly-$ 7,000 price tag is slightly more daring.

The cameras will be technically identical to the existing M (Typ 262) with the lightweight aluminum top plate and base, and no video or live view modes. The company says the red body will match the red 50mm F2 APO Summicron-M lens that it launched in equally limited numbers in November of 2015, though new owners of the red camera would be very lucky indeed to find one of those red lenses still on the shelves.

The red anodized M bodies will be sold through Leica’s own stores starting today. By comparison, a standard M (Typ 262) costs $ 5595/£4680.

Leica Camera Unveils Special Edition M Camera with Striking Red Anodized Finish

The Leica M (Typ 262) ‘red anodized finish’ is limited to just 100 units worldwide

December 14, 2017 – Leica Camera presents a special new addition to the Leica rangefinder system – the Leica M (Typ 262) ‘red anodized finish’. The unique color scheme of this special edition camera takes the classic styling of the Leica M and couples it with the bold statement of a bright red hue. The top plate and baseplate of the Leica M (Typ 262) are machined from solid aluminum and anodized in red. This lends the camera a unique look that perfectly matches the color of the special edition Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH. lens released in 2016. The exclusiveness of this striking edition is further underlined by the strictly limited number being made available: As was the case with the lens, the Leica M (Typ 262) ‘red anodized finish’ edition is limited to just 100 cameras worldwide, each with a unique serial number.

The technical specifications of the special edition camera are identical to those of the standard production Leica M (Typ 262). With its concentration on the functions essential for photography and intuitive handling, it is the perfect camera for experiencing the pure enjoyment of Leica M-Photography. The Leica M (Typ 262) embodies all the essential advantages of the Leica rangefinder system, while consciously eschewing extraneous features that can distract from the pure rangefinder experience. Its full-frame CMOS sensor is conceived exclusively for rangefinder photography and intentionally does without additional functions such as Live View and video recording. Its 24-megapixel resolution ensures exceptional imaging quality and extreme sensitivity to light, which also makes the Leica M (Typ 262) a perfect camera for photography in any available light situation. Supporting the sensor’s versatility to capture top-quality photographs in any situation, the camera’s Maestro processor guarantees fast processing of captured images and immediate readiness to shoot.

The handling of the Leica M (Typ 262) fulfills everything that discerning photographers expect from a Leica M. All controls and functions are logically and ergonomically located exactly where the photographer expects them to be. Just like every other M, it allows fast manual focusing with the coupled rangefinder and the focusing ring of the lens. It also offers a choice of manual or automatic aperture priority exposure. Due to the omission of Live-View and video capability, the menu is extremely lean and consists of only two pages. This ensures that all camera settings are easily and rapidly accessible at all times. Hasselblad launches its own online store, offers 5% off for a limited time

Iconic medium format manufacturer Hasselblad has opened its own online store, allowing users all over the world to skip the third-party vendors and local dealer and buy direct from the manufacturer itself. Following in the footsteps of Hasselblad’s first brick-andmortar stores in Sweden, China, and Japan, the online ‘Hasselblad Store’ will be open to resident of the USA, China, UK, Germany and France.

Currently, the Hasselblad Store is selling both X1D and H6D cameras, as well as a limited number of lenses. Opening offers include 5% off some X1D kits and the body-only price, while H6D buyers can get a free hard case with their purchase. These discounts will last until December 7th.

Peak Design unveils limited edition Leica Backpack Capsule

Peak Design has teamed with Leica to launch the Peak Design Leica Backpack Capsule, a combination Peak Design Backpack, Cuff (wrist strap) and Leash (neck strap) designed specifically for lovers of that expensive Red Dot.

This limited edition version of the company’s backpack includes subtle Leica trim including the camera maker’s iconic red dot, as well as red stitching.

Peak Design’s Backpack is designed for everyday use by photographers who need to safely transport their gear while traveling or undergoing their daily commute. The bag sports a pair of expandable external side pockets, padded internal accessory pockets, a sleeve for laptops up to 15in, a pair of weatherproof side zips for dual side-loading, a MagLatch top access point, and customizable FlexFold dividers.

Leica unveils M Monochrom Oslo Edition, limited to just 10 units

The Leica Store in Oslo has announced a special edition Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) camera simply called the Oslo Edition. This model is offered exclusively by the Leica Store Oslo, and though it is available worldwide, the edition is limited to just 10 units—this might be your best chance to get an ultra-rare Leica at a not-totally-insane price.

Both the camera body and the lens are engraved with the word ‘OSLO’ and a unit number ranging from 1 to 10. In addition to the special engraving and edition numbers, the Leica M Oslo Edition is shipped with a Leica Summaron-M 28mm F5.6 lens sporting a unique black finish.

Ricoh launches Pentax K-1 Limited Silver Edition

Pentax has made a tradition of launching silver-colored limited edition models of its DSLR line-up, and today parent company Ricoh has done just that, announcing a special edition of the Pentax K-1 36MP full-frame DSLR.

The silver K-1 is limited to 2,000 units worldwide, and features a high-grade silver-color coating on the camera body and battery grip to match the lineup of silver Pentax FA Limited lenses. There is also a limited edition metal hot shoe cover with logo, and the package includes a battery grip and two batteries. All the pieces come wrapped up in an exclusively designed product box.

The Pentax K-1 Limited Silver Edition will be available in mid-September. In the UK the recommended retail price is £2,150 (approximately $ 2755); no information on US pricing has been released yet.

Nikon releases limited edition camera posters for 100th anniversary

If a gunmetal grey Nikon D5 doesn’t really suit your fancy, and the thought of weighing down your stationary with a crystal Nikon effigy just doesn’t get the blood pumping, then maybe Nikon’s latest 100th anniversary product will hit the spot. Nikon has teamed up with portfolio and printing company Level.Press to create a series of limited edition camera posters that are actually pretty sweet.

There are 10 posters in all, each of them showcasing a different iconic Nikon camera model alongside the year the model was released as well as a small blurb about that model’s history. In order, they are the Nikon I, Nikon SP, Nikon F, the Calypso, Nikon Photomic FTn, Nikon F2 Photomic, Nikon F3, the Nikonos-V, the Nikonos-RS and the Nikon D1.

“These ten designs, each of an iconic Nikon camera and limited to just 100 first edition prints, will be printed on archival fine art paper, hand-numbered, embossed with a special seal and beautifully framed to your liking by Level Frames,” reads the product description on Level.Press. “Beautiful enough to adorn a home, office or studio, these 19.5″ x 19.5″ limited edition posters are the perfect gift for yourself or anyone passionate about photography and the simple, functional, classic design of these historic Nikon cameras.”

Perfect if you can afford them… that is. Given the high quality of the prints and the limited run, the framed posters sell for between $ 127 and $ 173 depending on how much matting you want. Not bad, when you really think about it, but quite a chunk of change for a poster.

Still, we like it a lot better than that crystal thing.

Leica unveils limited edition Leica M Monochrom “Jim Marshall Set”

Leica has released a limited-edition Leica M Monochrom “Jim Marshall Set”. Jim Marshall was the first and only photographer to receive the Grammy Trustees Award. The edition will be limited to 50 sets worldwide. The kit includes the new brass plated Leica M Monochrom camera with a special “Laiton” finish. Leica says the latter provides a unique matte quality. The camera comes with an inscription of Jim Marshall’s autograph and a Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH lens.

In the box you’ll also find a Jim Marshall Limited Edition Estate print of “Thelonious Monk at the Monterey Jazz Festival 1964” and a special, numbered edition and estate embossed copy of the book Jim Marshall: Jazz Festival.

To mark the occasion the Leica Gallery Los Angeles which will showcase some of Marshall’s images of jazz icons like Miles Davis, Nina Simone and Thelonious Monk. The exhibit will run from June 15th through July 31st.

Kodak’s first issue of new ‘limited edition’ Kodachrome magazine now on sale in the US

Late last year Kodak announced that it would produce Kodachrome (sorry, not that Kodachrome), a magazine dedicated to art, culture and all things analog. Today, it has become available for sale to US residents on the company’s website.

The limited run first edition costs $ 20, weighs in at 80 pages and includes features on actress/director Chloë Sevigny, filmmaker Isaac Julien and illustrator Tad Carpenter. The magazine was created by Stranger Collective, a UK-based content agency.

Apple launches new 9.7″ iPad and limited edition iPhone 7 in red

Apple has today announced a new 9.7″ iPad model that is simply called the iPad and replaces the iPad Air 2. Compared to the latter, the A8X processor has been replaced with the A9 chip that is also being used in the iPhone 6s. Due to a larger 8610 mAh battery the new model is at 7.5mm also 1.4mm thicker than the iPad Air 2. The rest of the specifications, including the 9.7″ display with a resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels, the 8MP/F2.4 rear camera and the 1.2MP front camera remain unchanged. TouchID with Apple Pay is on board as well. 

In an unusual move, Apple has lowered prices. In the past 9.7″ iPads started at $ 499. The 32GB base version of the new model is only $ 329. The 128GB variant will set you back $ 429. An additional $ 130 gets you the cellular version of the respective models. The new iPad will be available in Silver, Space Gray, and Gold starting March 24 in the US and 20 other countries. Apple also reduced the price of the iPad mini 4 which now comes in only one storage version with 128GB at $ 399. The cellular version is $ 529.

In addition to the iPad, Apple also launched the (Product) Red edition of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Proceeds of the (Product) Red line go towards charitable causes – in this case, they go to the Global Fund to support HIV/AIDS programs.

The new models only come as 128GB and 256GB storage versions. The red iPhone 7 starts at $ 750, the Plus version is $ 870. In both cases an additional $ 100 gets you the 256GB model. The devices will be available from March 24.

Also new is a video sharing app called Clips. It lets you treat your videos with a large variety of transformations, overlays and filters and also offers a number of more conventional video editing features. Final results can be shared to any app but Clip lacks some of the social networking features of apps like Vine or Snapchat.

FILM Ferrania P30 black and white film will get a limited ‘ALPHA’ release

FILM Ferrania has announced the ‘rebirth’ of its P30 black and white film, which will be made available soon as a limited ‘ALPHA’ edition. This 80 ISO panchromatic offering is described by FILM Ferrania as ‘motion picture film for still photography,’ reintroducing the P30 stock first launch by the company in the 1960’s. Says Ferrania, P30 ALPHA ‘has no peers in the modern analog film market.’

Ferrania introduced the limited edition product via a tweet yesterday, pointing photographers toward the P30 ALPHA’s product page and a new video (below). According to the company, its pre-production batch of film presents ‘various defects’ like contrast issues and scratches, but these issues will not be present in the finalized commercial film product. ‘That said, this film is an ALPHA edition for a clear reason,’ the company stressed.

The company has released a gallery of photos taken with the pre-production film on its P30 website. Photographer Adam Goldberg has also published a series of photographs taken with the film on his Tumblr. According to Ferrania, sales of the film will start in mid-February; no prices have been revealed.
