Nikon’s patent suggests password-based security system for lenses

Nikon has filed a patent covering the idea of a password-based security system for lenses. The patent lists the high value of lenses as a reason for the innovation – the camera would refuse to shoot with a lens unless the correct password was entered. This is an attempt by the the company to prevent resale of stolen gear. (via Nikon Rumors)

LockCircle releases Prime Circle XE lenses with wireless aperture control

Accessory maker LockCircle has announced Prime Circle XE lenses in a Canon EF mount with a wireless controller that can can change aperture remotely at distances of up to 300 feet. Ranging between focal lengths of 15mm to 135mm, the lenses feature Carl Zeiss optics in a housing designed specifically for cinematographers with large focus scales and a common 95mm front mount across the range of lenses. There is currently no information about the XE series’ price and availability.

DxOMark examines lenses for the Canon EOS 5D Mark III

DxO Labs has tested 85 lenses on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and analysed the results, looking at its two proprietary measures: ‘Perceptual Megapixels’ for lens sharpness, and the overall DxOMark score. In the first section of a multi-part series, it makes comparisons against both the EOS 5D Mark II and the Nikon D800, with results that may be surprising. Canon Singapore launches a ‘Try and Buy’ service for EF and EF-S lenses

Canon Singapore has launched a ‘Try and Buy’ lens scheme allowing customers to borrow more than seventy of the company’s EF and EF-S lenses at a fee for 48 hours. While a similar service is currently available globally to Canon Professional Services (CPS) members, Canon Singapore has opened this up for non-members as well. The service will start from March 28, 2013.

DxOMark investigates lenses for the Nikon D800

DxOMark has tested 61 lenses on the Nikon D800, and drawn some conclusions about the results. So far it has published two sections of an eventual four-part article: the first discusses how much benefit the D800’s 36MP sensor really offers over the 24MP chips in cameras such as the D3X and D600, while the second looks at which lenses in the 50-100mm range come out with the best DxOMark scores. Further parts later this month will look at telephoto and wideangle lenses. Click through for the link.

Pentax US offers mail-in rebates on 645D medium-format DSLR and lenses

Pentax US has announced mail-in rebates on its 645D medium-format DSLR and select Limited series lenses when purchased with the K-5 IIs DSLR. Buyers of the 645D body will receive a free D-FA 55mm lens and $ 500 rebate on the purchase of the D-FA 25mm and HD 90mm lens. Additionally, consumers who purchase the K-5IIs camera body will receive a $ 250 rebate on the purchase of FA 31mm, 43mm and 77mm Limited series lenses. The rebates can be claimed from March 11th through March 31st 2013 and will be paid in the form of a Visa gift card.

Panasonic announces upcoming firmware update for GH3 camera and lenses

Panasonic has announced firmware updates for its Lumix DMC-GH3 high-end movie-focused mirrorless camera, the 14-42mm and 45-175mm power zooms and the 45-150mm lens. The update for the GH3 will allow users to connect to a computer via Wi-Fi by entering the computer name (NetBIOS names for Mac). It also adds a 1080 60p, 28Mbps mode to video recording. Meanwhile the firmware updates for the lenses promise improved autofocus performance in AF Continuous mode when mounted on the GH3. The updates will be available at the end of this month.

Canon 7D vs Hacked Panasonic Gh1 – 1080P 24fps versus comparison – Bundled lenses

First test of the Panasonic Gh1 vs the Canon 7D. Both cameras use the bundled lenses for the comparison. This is also going to be the first in a new set of videos showing how to setup as use the GH1.

 
 

Nikon publishes Nikkor lenses 80th anniversary video

Nikon has published a YouTube video to celebrate the 80th anniversary of its Nikkor branded lenses. The video offers behind-the-scenes look at the manufacturing process from making the glass to final assembly of the lens. In a press release, the company has also listed out few milestones of the brand’s  history – starting with the first shipment of Aero-Nikkor aerial photographic lenses in the year 1933. Click through  to watch the video.
