Hands-on with upcoming Fujifilm XF and GF lenses

We’re in Dubai, where Fujifilm is showing off pre-production and prototype samples of three upcoming lenses – the GF 50mm F3.5 – a compact, lightweight standard lens for medium format – the XF 16mm F2.8, and the XF 16-80mm F4 – both of which designed for the company’s range of APS-C format X-series cameras.

Fujinon GF 50mm F3.5 LM WR

First up is the GF 50mm F3.5, which was placed on Fujifilm’s GF roadmap back in September. Shown here on the medium-format GFX 50R, the GF 50mm F3.5 covers a focal length equivalent to 40mm in 35mm terms, making it a so-called ‘normal’ standard lens. In terms of subject isolation, you can think of it as offering F2.8 full-frame equivalent depth-of-field, thanks to the reverse 0.79x crop factor. As you can see, for a lens designed for a modern medium-format system, it’s impressively small.

Even more impressive when you consider that the GF 50mm F3.5 contains nine elements in six groups, including one aspherical element. Note the small front element – more on that in a minute.

Fujinon GF 50mm F3.5 LM WR

An ideal companion for the (relatively) compact GFX 50R, the 50mm F3.5 provides a versatile and very portable solution for day to day photography. Autofocusing performance seems good, from our brief time with this pre-production sample, and focus acquisition is fast and quiet. Manual focus (as with all GF lenses) is ‘focus by wire’, via the slim focus ring towards the front of the lens.

Fujinon GF 50mm F3.5 LM WR

This shot shows the rear element of the GF 50mm F3.5. Compare this with the markedly small front element, and you might spot a theme with modern prime lenses designed for mirrorless systems. The short flange back and wide diameters of dedicated mirrorless camera mounts compared to legacy SLR systems allow optical designers to include large rear elements, positioned close to the imaging surface. Large rear elements allow for the potential to keep light rays at the peripheries of the image somewhat perpendicular to the sensor – in other words, less oblique. As such, higher resolution, lower chromatic aberration, and less vignetting can be achieved nearer to the edges of the frame. This can also mitigate the need for complex software corrections.

Furthermore, by making the rear elements of lenses like this slightly convex relative to the imaging surface, light that reflects back from the sensor can mostly be bounced outwards, beyond the imaging area. This reduces the risk of ‘ghosting’ when bright highlights appear in a scene.

The GF 50mm F3.5 will be available later this year, pricing still TBD.

Fujinon XF 16mm F2.8 R LM WR

Next up is the XF 16mm F2.8 for Fujifilm’s X-series APS-C format cameras, which was added to Fujifilm’s XF roadmap last summer. Equivalent to a 24mm F4.2 lens in full-frame terms, the XF 16mm is a tiny lens, perfect for street photography and landscape work, where portability is more important than a bright aperture.

Similar in general styling to Fujifilm’s 23mm, 35mm and 50mm F2 primes, the XF 16mm F2.8 really is tiny, and weighs in at only 155g. Despite its compact dimensions, it is sealed against dust and moisture incursion – you can just make out the rubber gasket around the lens mount in this shot.

Optical construction of the XF 16mm F2.8 comprises 10 elements in eight groups, including one aspherical element. Autofocus from this near-final sample (we tried it on an X-H1) is very fast and effectively silent. It will be available next month, pricing still TBD.

Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4 R LM WR

Finally, here’s the XF 16-80mm F4. Also added the roadmap last summer, the 16-80mm is optically stabilized and covers an equivalent focal length range of 24-120mm, with equivalent depth-of-field of a F6.0 lens. It’s a versatile standard ‘do everything’ zoom lens for Fujifilm’s XT-class mirrorless cameras. As you can see, at its 16mm position this lens is highly compact.

Zoomed in all the way to 80mm however, it almost doubles in size. Inside the barrel you’ll find 16 elements in 12 groups, including no fewer than four aspherical elements and one ED. The relatively large front element supports a 72mm filter thread.

Like the XF 16mm F2.8, the XF 16-80mm F4 is ‘WR’ (weather resistant). Pricing and availability has yet to be confirmed.

Leica launches limited edition versions of three classic M lenses

Limited edition versions of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm F2 ASPH, Summaron-M 28 mm F5.6 and Summilux-M 28 mm F1.4 ASPH lenses have been announced for the Leica M rangerfinder series, with alternative finishes, red markings and different materials setting them out from the normal production versions.

Each of the limited editions has its distance or aperture markings picked out in red paint, and each comes in a different paint or finish to the standard models.

The lens with the most unique features is the APO-Summicron-M 50 mm F2 which comes in black chrome, and substitutes the regular focusing ring for a ‘scalloped’ version that the company says echoes the design of the 1956 model. There is a lot of brass too, with the components of the barrel made in brass, as is the lens hood and the lens cap.

The Summaron-M 28 mm F5.6 will come in a black matt paint that’s especially hard wearing, according to Leica, making it as tough as the black chrome finishes. The Summilux-M 28 mm F1.4 will come in a silver anodized finish.

Each of the lenses will be technically identical to the standard production models, just with these cosmetic differences. There will only be 700 of the 50mm lens, 500 of the 28mm F5.6 and 300 of the 28mm F1.4 – and all will be available by the end of the month.

Leica Camera AG presents three new design options in the Leica M-Lens portfolio.

Leica Camera AG presents new design versions of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm F2 ASPH., Leica Summaron-M 28 mm F5.6 and Leica Summilux- M 28 mm F1.4 ASPH. lenses for the Leica M-System. The special series of the three lenses are distinguished by unique design highlights and are being offered in a limited number of examples. The performance and technical specifications of the lenses are otherwise identical to those of the serial production products.

The new series of lenses includes a black chrome version of the APO-Summicron-M 50 mm F2 ASPH. standard lens. In comparison to the serial production lens, this design alternative features a characteristically scalloped focusing ring that recalls the appearance of the Summicron 50 mm F2 (II) from 1956. The components of the barrel of this special series are machined from brass. The engravings for the focal length and the distances in feet are picked out in red. The lens is supplied complete with a classic, round brass lens hood engraved with ‘Made in Germany’ and a lens cap turned from solid brass. The edition of the lens in this design version is strictly limited to 700 examples. The APO-Summicron-M 50 mm F2 ASPH. in black chrome is available from 21 February.

The second special series presents a version of the Leica Summaron-M 28 mm F5.6 in matt black paint finish, a lens from the classic line-up of Leica M-Lenses. The Summaron-M is modelled on a screw mount lens produced at the Leitz factory in Wetzlar from 1955 to 1963. With a length of less than 2 centimetres, this extremely compact wide-angle lens is the smallest lens of the M-System lens portfolio. The special paint used for this special series is particularly resistant to wear and lends the lens an appearance almost identical to that of the classic black chrome finishes.

A further feature of the new lens is the engraving of the aperture scale visible from the front, with numbers now picked out in red. This edition of the Leica Summaron-M 28 mm F5.6 in matt black paint is limited to 500 examples for the global market. The lenses will be on sale from 28 February.

The third design option, the Summilux-M 28 mm F1.4 ASPH. in a silver anodised version, offers owners of Leica M-Cameras in silver a further high-performance lens that matches the finish of their cameras. This fast wide-angle lens is an ideal companion for reportage photography and delivers impressive imaging performance in all lighting situations. The lens with the alternative finish will be on sale from 28 February in a limited edition of 300 examples.

Panasonic launches 50mm F1.4, 70-200 F4 OIS and 24-105mm F4 Macro OIS full-frame lenses

Panasonic has launched a trio of Lumix S lenses alongside its S1 and S1R full-frame mirrorless cameras. The three new lenses are a 50mm F1.4 – Panasonic’s ‘reference lens’, a 70-200 F4 OIS and a versatile 24-105mm F4 OIS Macro, which will serve as the kit lens for both cameras.

The Lumix S Pro 50mm F1.4 features 13 elements – two aspherical and three ED – and an 11-blade aperture. Panasonic claims that one of the aspherical elements is among the largest ever created, with a diameter of over 40mm. The lens has two focus motors – linear and stepping – designed to operate with 480 fps sensor readout. Panasonic says that the lens has been designed for smooth exposure changes with minimal focus breathing for video capture.

The Lumix S Pro 70-200 F4 OIS’s stabilization works in conjunction with the S1/S1R’s in-body IS to provide up to 6.5 stops of shake reduction. It has 23 elements, including aspherical, UHR, UED and ED. It uses a linear motor with a 480 fps AF control. As with the 50mm F1.4, the 70-200 is weather-sealed, has a focus clutch and is designed to reduce focus breathing.

Finally, there’s the Lumix S 24-105mm F4 Macro OIS, which will serve as the kit lens for both the S1 and S1R. It too is stabilized, and has one ED, two aspherical ED, two aspherical and three ED elements. The 24-105 uses a linear motor, again with 480 fps AF control. The minimal focus distance on this general-purpose lens is 0.3m, with a maximum magnification of 0.5x.

All three lenses are dust and moisture-sealed, and the two ‘S Pro’ models include a focus clutch for quick switching between auto and manual focus.

The three new lenses will ship in early April. The 50mm F1.4 is priced at $ 2299, the 70-200 F4 at $ 1699 and the 24-105mm F4 at $ 1299. Buying the S1/S1R kit effectively lowers the price of the 24-105mm F4 to $ 899.

Ensuring versatile use with its 50mm focal length and F1.4 high speed, the LUMIX S PRO 50mm F1.4 boasts stunningly high resolution and a descriptive performance from the center to the corners of the image despite its large aperture. It provides smooth defocus gradation from the focus peak to the neighboring area of the image. It also describes the point light sources in the background as impressive, beautiful bokeh. Voigtlander Vintage Line lenses for Leica M mount get prices for US, UK markets

Prices have been released in the USA and UK for a pair of new Voigtlander lenses designed for M mount rangefinder cameras. Both the Color-Skopar 21mm f/3.5 VM Aspherical Vintage Line and the Ultron 35mm f/2 VM Aspherical Vintage Line will cost $ 799/£599 and are available now.

The aim of the lenses is to provide compact and high quality optics in a retro style that conjures the essence of the 1950s. The company says it targeted more moderate maximum apertures so that it could keep the lenses small, but also because very wide apertures are less practical when using rangefinders, especially when the subject isn’t central or is moving in the frame.

Ricoh announces Pentax 35mm F2 and 11-18mm F2.8 K-mount lenses

Ricoh has announced a pair of Pentax K-mount lenses: the HD PENTAX-FA 35mm F2 and HD PENTAX-DA* 11-18mm F2.8 ED DC AW.

The full-frame 35mm F2 is based on the smc PENTAX-FA 35mm F2 AL from the film era and features HD and SP coatings, with the former reducing reflections and the latter repelling water from the front element. The lens has six elements in five groups and a six-blade aperture. It’s remarkably compact, despite having both an aperture ring and distance scale, and weighs in at just 193 grams. The lens will be available in February for £399.

The PENTAX-DA* 11-18mm F2.8 ED DC AW was introduced way back in the Fall of 2017 and was supposed to ship the following summer. After a bit of a delay, this APS-C lens is finally read to ship next month. The weather-resistant 11-18mm F2.8, equivalent to 16.5-27mm when mounted on an APS-C body, has 16 elements, a nine-blade aperture and an HD coating. There’s also a clamp to lock focus at a desired point and the ‘ability to accommodate the addition of a dew heating strip to prevent condensation without affecting focus-ring operation.’ The lens will be priced at £1399.

Hasselblad updates firmware for X1D-50c, adds support for new XCD lenses

Hasselblad has announced a firmware update for its X1D-50c medium format mirrorless camera that brings new and improved support to a number of lenses and a converter as well as added features and functionality within the camera itself.

In addition to improved autofocus compatibility with compatible HC/HCD lenses via the XH Adapter, firmware version 1.22 adds support for the following lenses and converter:

  • XCD 65mm F2.8
  • XCD 80mm F1.9
  • XCD 135mm F2.8
  • H 1.7x Converter

Also in the update is a new exposure bracketing option that makes it possible to set a timer to avoid camera shake when shooting long exposures, a new indication to let users know what Auto Focus Scan Range is being used (Near, Far, or Full) and a new customizable icon arrangement on the main menu screen of the X1D-50c.

It’s also now possible to turn off the front-facing LED when using the self timer countdown and the ability to reset focus point in live view by pressing the Cross (X) button.

Hasselblad Firmware Update 1.22 for X1D-50c adds support for new XCD Lenses

With the release of Hasselblad’s most recent XCD Lenses, the XCD 65, 80, and 135 including X Converter 1,7, the new 1.22 Firmware Update ensures photographers are equipped with the most up-to-date tools for capturing their creative visions. Alongside the latest 0.5.33 lens firmware, this update also includes a list of minor improvements that advance the overall functionality of the X1D- 50c mirrorless medium format camera. As with all X1D-50c and XCD Lens firmware updates, these upgraded features are easily downloaded through the My Hasselblad section at Hasselblad.com.

Support of Newest Lenses The XCD 2,8/65, XCD 1,9/80 and XCD 2,8/135 are added to the lineup of supported lenses for the X1D-50c. Note that these lenses must also be updated to firmware 0.5.33 as well.

New Exposure Bracketing option It is now possible to set an initial delay in order to avoid camera shake on long exposures.

Indication of Auto Focus Scan Range in Live View With lenses that support divided scan range of Near, Far, or Full, a visual icon will be shown in Live View indicating when Near or Far settings are enabled. Currently the XCD 120 and XCD 135 lenses support this feature.

Customisable icon arrangement on main menu screen Drag and drop icons to rearrange quick-access shortcuts to settings and options on the X1D-50c’s main menu screen.

New Custom Button options Three new custom button options are available, including Live View On/Off, Drive to Near (mini- mum focus distance) and AF Scan Range Cycle.

New Self Timer option It is now possible to turn off the front flashing LED during the Self Timer countdown.

AF with HC/HCD Lenses and Converters/Extension Tubes Autofocus for compatible HC/HCD Lenses via the XH Adapter includes expanded support of select H System lens accessories including extension tubes and select adapters.

Reset Focus point in Live View Set Focus Point back to the centre directly while in Live View by pressing the Cross (X) Button.

Firmware updates are available from the “My Hasselblad > Downloads” section online at Hasselblad. com. Users can update their firmware simply by downloading the “.cim” file to an SD card and selecting Firmware Update from the Service Menu on their camera.

Sigma releases firmware updates for Canon EF and Nikon F lenses, MC-11 mount converter

Sigma has released multiple firmware updates for Nikon F-mount and Canon EF-mount interchangeable lenses. The new lens firmware updates bring a number of changes to a total of seven lenses, adding support for Canon’s Lens Aberration Correction function and multiple bug fixes, which were addressed in a recent compatibility notice.

The firmware update for Canon EF-mount brings the new Lens Aberration Correction function support for the following lenses:

  • SIGMA 24-35mm F2 DG HSM | Art
  • SIGMA 500mm F4 DG OS HSM | Sports
  • SIGMA 18-300 mm F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM | Contemporary

In addition, the update improves the AF speed for the 500mm lens when it is used with select camera models, and also adds compatibility with the EOS R’s ‘Scene Intelligent Auto Mode’ and automatic ‘1.6x (Crop)’ to the 18-300mm lens.

Sigma has also released a firmware update for Nikon F-Mount lenses that exclusively brings bug fixes. The software corrects problems that could impact video recording, AF, and overexposure involving the following lenses:

  • SIGMA 24-35mm F2 DG HSM | Art
  • SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art
  • SIGMA 85mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art
  • SIGMA 135mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art

Tamron confirms compatibility with Nikon Z6 for six of its Di, Di II lenses

Lens maker Tamron has confirmed new firmware issued at the end of last year to make certain lenses compatible with Nikon’s Z7 camera will also work for owners of the Z6. The firmware applies to six lenses from the Di and Di ll ranges, and allows the following lenses to be used with the cameras via the Nikon FTZ adapter:

  • SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A041) for Nikon
  • SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A032) for Nikon
  • 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD (Model B028) for Nikon
  • SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A025) for Nikon
  • SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 (Model A022) for Nikon
  • 17-35mm F/2.8-4 Di OSD (Model A037) for Nikon

Tamron initially faced issues with compatibility when the company’s lenses were used on the new Nikon mirrorless cameras, and issued new firmware for certain lens models at the end of last year to make them work with the Z7. This latest announcement appears to come after tests have confirmed that the same firmware also works when the lenses are mounted on the Z6.

Users need the Tamron TAP-in to update lens firmware – or a visit to a Tamron service centre. The TAP-in console costs around $ 60.

Nikon updates its lens roadmap with 3 lenses confirmed for 2020, 7 listed for 2021 release

Nikon has released an updated lens roadmap for its Nikon Z system that includes a number of amendments from the original roadmap shared in August 2018.

The new roadmap now makes clear the 20mm F1.8 S, 50mm F1.2 S and 14-24mm F2.8 S will ship some time in 2020. The 24mm F1.8 is expected to ship in 2019, a bump up from the original 2020 release timeframe.

Nikon also dropped a ‘TBA’ lens from its 2021 timeframe, dropping to seven lenses from eight.

Black Eye launches its 4th-gen universal Pro mobile lenses in North America

European mobile camera lens company Black Eye has announced the launch of its fourth-generation universal Pro lenses for smartphones in North America. As of now, Black Eye’s portfolio features nine mobile lenses across three product series, as well as a new Travel Kit G4, an upcoming Pro Kit G4 bundle and new cases for the iPhone 7 and later.

Black Eye was founded by professional photographer Arto Ekman and professional snowboarders Fredu Sirviö and Eero Ettala. The company’s mobile lenses center around a simple universal attachment system that can be clipped onto most smartphones and similar mobile devices, such a laptop’s webcam.

Black Eye’s most recent product lineup includes the Pro-series Portrait Tele G4, Cinema Wide G4, and Fisheye G4 lenses, as well as the regular wide, macro and combo G4 lenses. The company also recently launched the Travel Kit G4, a bundle featuring a case and the Wide G4, Macro G4 and Pro Portrait Tele G4 lenses.
