Samyang’s new XEEN CF Cine Prime full-frame lenses detailed ahead of Q3 launch

Samyang has launched its new line of XEEN CF Cine Prime full-frame lenses made from lightweight carbon fiber. The XEEN CF will be offered in 16mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm options for Canon EF, Sony E and PL mounts. The model features a T1.5 aperture, 11-blade diaphragm and luminous numbers on the lens rings for making adjustments in dark conditions.

The XEEN CF lenses feature the company’s proprietary X-Coating for minimized reflections paired with controlled ghosting and flares for halation, producing a ‘dramatic effect.’ Users are promised ‘beautiful bokeh’ thanks to the 11-blade diaphragm and excellent low-light performance from the bright aperture.

The lenses are designed for large format and 8K sensors, offering the durability and light weight of carbon fiber at 0.9kg (2lbs) to 1.1kg (2.4lbs), depending on the model. Due to the low weight, the new XEEN CF lenses can be used with gimbals and drones in addition to movie cameras.

The company will initially launch its 24mm, 50mm and 85mm lenses in Q3 2019; the 16mm and 35mm options won’t be released until early next year. Prices are unclear at this time, but ePhotozine claims the lenses will be showcased at the 2019 IBC Exhibition in Amsterdam from September 13 to 17.

Sigma halts production of Pentax K mount lenses to put its focus on mirrorless

Independent lens manufacturer Sigma has announced that it will no longer offer lenses for Pentax K-mount cameras. The announcement was made on the Facebook page of Sigma Czech Republic, stating that because of dwindling numbers of Pentax users and company has decided to stop producing Pentax mount lenses. Instead, the post says, Sigma plans to focus more on developing and supporting mirrorless systems, which it believes are ‘the future.’

The move will be a blow to Pentax users and will leave them with almost no support for AF lenses from third-party manufacturers as Tamron appears to have practically dropped the mount as well. Pentax itself offers about 14 lenses for its full-frame K1 and K1II cameras, but a much wider collection for the APS-C sensor cameras.

Alleged roadmap leaks 10 new Nikkor Z lenses set for 2020, 2021 release

The allegedly leaked roadmap shows off ten new lenses not officially announced by Nikon.

Nikon has already detailed a number of new Nikkor Z lenses it’s working on, but a newly leaked image, believed to be a more extensive lens roadmap, shows a number of additional lenses Nikon allegedly has planned for the future.

The purported roadmap, first shared by Nikon Rumors, shows ten additional lenses not currently shown in the roadmap image Nikon has posted to its website, ranging from fast primes to impressive telephoto zoom lenses.

According to the roadmap, which again hasn’t been confirmed as real, the 2020 lenses Nikon hasn’t detailed on its current roadmap include the Nikkor Z 85mm F1.2 S, Nikkor Z 135mm F1.8 S, Nikkor Z 28-70mm F2.8-3.5 and Nikkor Z 24-120 F4 S. The 2020 lenses already announced include the 20mm F1.8 S, 50mm F1.2 S and 14-24mm F2.8 S.

Moving onto 2021, Nikon has seven lenses listed as ‘TBA’ on its current roadmap. Interestingly, the purported leaked roadmap mentions only six, including the Nikkor Z 28mm F1.8 S, Nikkor Z 35mm F1.2 S, Nikkor Z 65mm F1.8 S and Nikkor Z 105mm F1.8 S.

If the roadmap is indeed real, it seems Nikon is covering a lot of ground with an impressive range of lenses. Interestingly, there doesn’t appear to be any F1.4 lenses, with Nikon instead opting for either F1.8 or F1.2 for its faster primes.

Ultimately, time will tell whether or not the roadmap is indeed real.

Canon Announces Two New RF Lenses: The 15-35mm and the 24-70mm

Canon has just announced two more lenses for their RF lineup: the RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS and the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS.

Note that the RF line is designed for Canon’s full-frame mirrorless bodies, which currently includes the Canon EOS R and the Canon EOS RP. This is excellent news for Canon mirrorless users, who have previously had to contend with Canon’s relatively weak mirrorless lens lineup.

So if you’re a Canon mirrorless fan, this is for you.

These two lenses were unveiled by Canon back in February. But we now have specifications, prices, and release dates to share.

The Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS

If you’re a landscape photographer, you’ll undoubtedly appreciate a high-quality wide zoom such as the Canon 15-35mm f/2.8L IS.

The focal length is perfect for a mix of wide and ultra-wide landscapes, and the image stabilization makes it possible to handhold photos, even with a deep depth of field.

Plus, the image quality is bound to be stellar.

This lens could easily become a landscape photography workhorse. It could also make its way into the bags of wedding photographers who are looking for a high-performing wide zoom.

The Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS will be sold for $ 2,299 USD starting at the end of September. While the price isn’t cheap, serious landscape photographers will appreciate the focal length, the optical quality, and the image stabilization.

The Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM

Compared to the 15-35mm, the 24-70mm is more of an all-around option and one that’ll hold its own with the best in the field.

First, the wide maximum aperture and standard zoom focal length make this lens a good choice for portraits. The 9-bladed aperture is also bound to produce some gorgeous bokeh. So for portrait photographers, this is a lens worth looking at.

Event photographers will also appreciate the fast aperture, while the 5-stop image stabilization will make handholding in low light easy to pull off.

Even landscape photographers should consider the 24-70mm f/2.8. For landscape photographers who like a tighter look, the 24-70mm focal length range is exactly what is needed.

The Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM will start shipping at the end of September for $ 2,299 USD.

Conclusion

If you’re a mirrorless landscape photographer, then this is a good day, because you’ve got two amazing new RF lenses to look forward to.

Same goes for portrait and event photographers, who should appreciate the image stabilization and fast apertures these two lenses bring to the table.

Tamron firmware update adds support for Nikon’s FTZ adapter to three of its lenses

Tamron has released firmware updates for three of its F mount lenses to add support for Nikon’s FTZ adapter.

Back in November 2018, Tamron announced firmware updates (1, 2) for half a dozen lenses that added support for Nikon’s F to Z mount adapter. Now, three additional lenses gain support: the Tamron SP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD (Model F016), 70-210mm F/4 Di VC USD (Model A034) and 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD (Model A035).

No additional changes are mentioned in the firmware update, but regardless of whether or not you have a Nikon Z6 or Z7 camera, it’s probably in your best interest to download and install the firmware updates via Tamron’s TAP-in Utility, which works with the Tamron TAP-in console to update compatible Tamron lenses.

Sony releases two new APS-C E-mount lenses: 16-55mm F2.8 and 70-350mm F4.5-6.3

Sony has unveiled two new APS-C lenses at an event in New York today: the E 16-55mm F2.8 G and E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS. Both lenses offer dust and weather sealing, and use XD linear motors – a first for Sony’s APS-C lens lineup.

The 16-55mm offers a 24-82.5mm equiv. range, with an overall compact design – it weighs 17.5oz / 494g and measures 100mm in length. It provides a minimum focus distance of 0.33m / 1ft, and will go on sale in October for $ 1400.

The E 70-350mm provides a 105-525mm equiv. view, with stabilization built in. It’s also relatively compact for a lens of its telezoom class – it measures 142mm and weighs 22oz/625g. It will ship in November for $ 1000.

Nitecore leaps into the world of optics with 5 new full-frame cinema lenses

Nitecore, a Chinese company known for its rechargeable flashlights and third-party battery equipment, has taken an unexpected leap into to the world of optics with its Superior Prime lineup, a collection line of prime cinema lenses for full-frame camera systems.

The five lens lineup includes a 25mm T2.1, 35mm T2.0, 50mm T2.0, 75mm T2.0 and 100mm T2.0. The exact specifications for each lens are detailed in the below graphic, but across the board, the lenses measure 117mm long (with the PL mount) and 95mm diameter for seamless swapping when using gears and other cinema equipment. Nitecore says the lenses will be available with interchangeable PL, Canon EF and Sony E mounts, but will ship with the PL mount in the original packaging.

The exact details on the coating technology used aren’t specified, but Nitecore says the lenses ‘are designed with a unique optical coating which ideally controls dispersion while retaining plentiful details to create low contrast and a stylized flare.’ The 75mm T2.0, in particular, is also ‘specially optimized on the skin details in a portrait,’ although we’re not exactly sure what they’re referring to with that statement.

There are currently no details on pricing or availability. We have contacted Nitecore in an attempt to get more information and will update this article accordingly if we hear back.

Tamron teases four new lenses for Sony E mount cameras

Tamron USA has shared the above video on Facebook teasing four new lenses for Sony E mount camera systems.

In the 18-second video, which is accompanied by the description ‘Tamron Thrives on Challenging the Limits,’ Tamron shows off the silhouette of four new lenses alongside its currently-available 17-28mm F2.8 Di III RXD and 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD lenses.

No additional details are given, but based on the sizing of the lenses, it appears as though the tallest of the four lenses will be a telephoto zoom (note the focus and zoom rings on the edge of the silhouette) and the remaining three lenses will be more compact primes.

In a follow-up post, Tamron says the lenses will be ‘Coming Soon,’ but leaves it at that. Sony Alpha Rumors is reporting the new lenses being shown off at PhotoPlus in October, but that’s far from confirmed at this point.

Viltrox APS-C lenses for Fujifilm, Sony and Leica detailed ahead of launch

Chinese camera gear brand Viltrox is planning to release three autofocus lenses for Fujifilm X-mount, Sony E-mount, and Leica M-mount, according to FujiRumors, which initially spied the upcoming products back in May.

In a new report published this week, FujiRumors detailed the alleged specs for the three lenses, product images for which it found published on Viltrox’s official profile on Chinese social media website Sina Weibo. Below are images of the lenses and a breakdown of the specifications based on the charts provided by Viltrox:

It’s unclear when the new lenses will launch. The initial report in May claimed on behalf of a source that the new models may launch in October, but the latest report points toward ‘around November’ as the official release time frame. Prices haven’t been revealed at this time. These three lenses will join Viltrox’s previously launched 85mm F1.8 autofocus APS-C lens.
