Tamron says its new SP 35mm F1.4 is ‘its finest lens ever’

Tamron has released details of a new lens it claims is the finest it has ever produced. Made to celebrate 40 years of the SP range, the SP 35mm F1.4 Di USD will be the ‘embodiment of all the optical technology and manufacturing know-how Tamron has developed to date,’ a sentiment Tamron shared with us in an interview back in April.

The lens will use 14 elements in 10 groups, including four LD (Low Dispersion) and three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements. Tamron notes this combination will limit chromatic aberration and will produce high-resolution across the frame as well as ‘beautiful, appealing background bokeh’.

The lens will also feature a new coating called BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2). Tamron says this reduces reflections, minimizes flare and allows it to achieve better levels of contrast. Powering the focus mechanism inside the lens is Tamron’s Ultrasonic Silent Drive, and a new Dynamic Rolling-cam mechanism has been added to reduce the drive load on the main focusing group to allow the large elements to move more quickly in all operating conditions.

The lens will be available in Nikon F mount first at the end of June, and then for Canon EF at the end of July. It will cost $ 899 / £929.99. it’s available to pre-order from both Adorama and B&H.

Unreleased Sony 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS FE lens prototype appears on auction website

Last month, a rumor surfaced that Sony has a new ‘wildlife/sports’ lens announcement scheduled for the first week of June. Following that leak, a new Sony 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS FE lens prototype appeared for sale on Yahoo! Japan’s auction website for 20,000 JPY ($ 185 USD). A number of images were included with the auction, which detailed the lens as ‘junk / for parts.’

The auction went live on June 1 and ended at a price of 31,500 JPY ($ 291 USD) on June 2. The prototype’s origins remain a mystery; the product was listed as slightly disassembled with ‘unconfirmed’ functionality. No box or accessories were included with the product, fueling speculation that the prototype was either stolen or found discarded.

The lens visibly contains Sony branding, as well as the model info stamped into the housing. The company hasn’t commented on the auction, which is still visible on Yahoo! Japan, but no longer open to bidding. It’s unclear whether the prototype was sold or the auction was cancelled. At this time, the lens doesn’t officially exist.

Panasonic’s versatile Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm F1.7 lens available in July

Panasonic has announced that its Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm F1.7 ASPH lens – first teased at Photokina 2018 – will be available for purchase in July. Panasonic is marketing the 10-25mm, which in full-frame terms is equivalent to 20-50mm on a Micro Four Thirds body, as a single lens that covers five commonly used equivalent focal lengths: 20, 24, 28, 35 and 50mm.

The lens features a total of 17 elements, including aspherical, ED and UHR glass. The lens uses a stepping motor to provide fast, quiet focus. It has a nine-blade aperture and minimum focus distance of 28cm (11″). The lens isn’t as large or as heavy as one would expect, and is very well-built and fully weather-sealed. It’s the first Panasonic Micro Four Thirds lens with a focus clutch and a clickless aperture ring is also provided.

The 10-25mm was very much designed with video in mind, with minimal focus breathing, ‘seamless’ iris control for smooth exposure changes and linear focus response.

The Panasonic Leica DG 10-25mm F1.7 ASPH will be available in July for $ 1799/£1799.

Hands-on with Panasonic’s 10-25mm F1.7 Micro Four Thirds lens

Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm F1.7 ASPH

The Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm F1.7 ASPH is a fast zoom lens that covers several popular focal lengths. When mounted on a Micro Four Thirds body, where it’s equivalent to 20-50mm, you can hit 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm or 50mm with a single lens (and a fast one, at that). It will ship in July for $ 1799/£1799.

The lens was originally announced last year at Photokina, and saw a mockup under glass at CP+ back in March.

We were able to get our hands on a preproduction lens, so click through to learn more about this beast of a lens.

Big, but not that big

Make no mistake, the 10-25mm F1.7 is a hefty lens, but it’s not nearly as large or heavy as one would expect given its ambitious spec. The lens is 128mm (5″) long, has a max diameter of 88mm (3.5″) and weighs in at 690g (1.5lb). By comparison, Sigma’s 18-35mm F1.8 Art lens is a bit shorter, but almost 20% heavier, despite covering a narrower range of focal lengths.

The 10-25mm is a pricey lens, and it feels like it in the hand. It’s virtually all metal and is dust and splash-resistant. The lens can function down to -10°C/+14°F.

Seventeen elements

It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that this ambitious lens requires a lot of glass. The 10-25mm F1.7 has 17 elements in 12 groups and includes aspherical, ED and UHR elements. The lens is threaded for 77mm filters, which serves as an example as how compact (relatively speaking) the 10-25 is.

The lens uses a stepping motor that focuses quickly and quietly.

Grabbing control over focus

The 10-25 is the first Panasonic Micro Four Thirds lens to have a focus clutch, making it easy to quickly switch between auto and manual focus. As you can see from the photo above, the lens can focus down to 28cm (11″).

With the clutch pulled back, the manual focus response is linear. This will be especially useful for video shooters, since it means you can be certain of how much the focus will change in response to you turning the lens. There’s a feedback stop at either end of the focus range but they’re not hard stops: the focus ring will continue to rotate beyond the close and far points, so it’s not great for use with a follow-focus.

Stills shooters are likely to appreciate that it gives an experience much more like an old, mechanically-driven lens,

Put a ring on it

The aperture ring, which travels from F1.7 to F16, is click-less, another feature the video crowd will appreciate. Something we like about the dial, at least on the prototype we used, is that there’s a detent to prevent you from accidentally switching the ring out of Auto mode.

Just as importantly for videographers, the aperture/iris is driven smoothly, without steps. This allows subtle adjustments in exposure (either manually or in auto mode), without the brightness of the video visibly jumping.

No going to great lengths

The lens extends when you adjust the zoom, but not by much: here it’s shown at full-extension.

Its comparably low weight should make it easy for a gimbal to stabilize, and the limited change in length should also mean its center of gravity doesn’t move very much. This should make it possible to get away without having to re-balance for different focal lengths, which is a clear benefit over using a series of prime lenses.

L-mount teleconverters

Panasonic released a pair of teleconverters for its S-series full-frame bodies alongside the 10-25mm F1.7. These 1.4x and 2x converters are compatible with Panasonic’s S Pro 70-200mm lenses: the currently available F4 version as well as the F2.8 model coming later this year.

Both teleconverters feature UHR (ultra-high refractive index lens) elements, and Panasonic claims that there’s virtually no reduction in resolution when using them.

The 1.4x and 2x teleconverters are priced at $ 499/£489 and $ 599/£579, respectively.

Kickstarter campaign seeks funding for Alter RFS, a hinged lens filter adapter

Alter has launched a Kickstarter funding campaign for Alter RFS, a Rapid Filter System that attaches lens filters to a camera via a hinged adapter. The Alter RFS friction hinge supports 270 degrees of rotation, enabling photographers to lower a filter over the lens when needed, then quickly lift it out of the way again.

Alter RFS, which is made out of milled anodized aerospace aluminum, features a magnet for sealing the filter over the lens and a light shield for preventing light leaks. The adapter supports existing lens filters with universal threads and can be rotated to move the hinge to the ideal position for the user’s needs (from the top to the side of the lens, for example).

The friction hinge prevents the filter from falling back down over the lens even during rough camera movements. Alter plans to offer the Rapid Filter System in filter sizes 40.5mm to 105mm, as well as an RFS+ adapter model that includes a built-in step-up.

Alter is offering Kickstarter backers various discounts for pledging funds to the campaign, with those discounts starting at $ 67 USD for a single Alter RFS up to $ 59 USD each for three units and $ 55 USD for any additional units beyond that. The company anticipates a retail price of $ 79 USD, assuming the campaign is successful and the product is brought to market. Shipments to backers are estimated to start in September.

Kipon shares new details of upcoming 12mm F2.8 lens for Fujifilm X-mount cameras

Kipon has shared new details about an upcoming 12mm F2.8 manual wide angle lens for APS-C camera systems.

The Ibegon 12mm F2.8 lens is being sold under the Kipon name, but its optical formula was designed by the German IB/E Optics. Its optical construction consists of 12 elements in nine groups and it features a seven-blade aperture diaphragm. It has a minimum focusing distance of 15cm (approximately 6in) and an aperture range between F2.8 and F22.

Currently, the product page only mentions availability for Fujifilm X mount camera systems, but Kipon previously teased at CP+ 2014 that it would be available for MFT, Sony E and EOS M mounts as well. Kipon hasn’t shared specific pricing information, but says it plans to ship the lens starting September 2019.

This wooden Leica is a covert music box with rotating ‘lens’

Unlike some of the camera replica projects that have surfaced over the years, this wooden Leica music box is available to purchase now. The music box, which is available from multiple sellers through online retailers Amazon and eBay, features a combination of wood components and wood burning to imitate the Leica M camera system.

7 Ideas for Creative Lens Ball Photography [video]

In this video by our friends over at Cooph, you’ll learn 7 great ideas for creative lens ball photography to have fun with.

The 7 ideas for creative lens ball photography include:

1. Typography

Type some text and print it out (or find some text you already have) and photograph the lens ball on top. The ball acts as a magnifying glass and distorts the edges of the text.

Look for large letters on signage and displays and photograph the lens ball in front of it for a cool effect.

2. Split World

Look for corners with contrast to create a yin/yang effect.

3. Altering Structure

Find interesting flat structures to photograph the sphere against. The sphere will alter its structure and give it form.

Scan your lawn for flowers and photograph them through the sphere.

4. Inner Circle

Find round shaped objects that support the shape of the lens ball. Crawl into a tunnel (only a safe one, of course), set up your lens ball for the perfect shot.

5. Elements

Fill up a bucket with water. Set up your camera with a high shutter speed and have someone throw the lens ball out of the water bucket. You capture all the action.

Prepare lighter fluid and a spark (Editor note: actually, I don’t fully recommend this one unless you can absolutely do this safely. Fire is dangerous!!)

6. Portraits

Play with nature and your model for capturing cool portraits using the lens ball.

You can also have fun in the studio with this.

7. Abstract Spheres

Create custom backgrounds (cool wrapping paper or printouts will work great). Find interesting patterns too. These make for awesome shots using the lens ball.

Grids also work well. Place your grid in front of a colored wall and light it up. Put your lens ball in front and take some shots.

Bonus Tip:

Use light sabers and your ball for cool effects.

Lomography announces Petzval 55mm F1.7 lens for full-frame mirrorless systems

Lomography has announced it’s opened pre-orders for the Petzval 55mm F1.7 MKII, its first lens designed specifically for full-frame mirrorless cameras.

According to Lomography, the lens ‘is created with discerning photographers and filmmakers in mind’ and ‘designed to allow full creative flexibility, with its 7 levels of Bokeh Control and Dual Aperture system.’ Like other Lomography lenses, the Petzval 55mm F1.7 MKII comes with various plates to shape the bokeh in images.

The lens is available Sony E, Canon RF and Nikon Z mounts and comes in three varieties: black brass, satin-finish brass and black anodized aluminum for $ 499, $ 449 and $ 399, respectively. Pre-orders are open now; the first aluminum units are expected to ship in July 2019 and brass units will follow shortly after in August 2019.
