Photokina 2018: Zenit and Leica collaborate on new ‘M’

Designed in Russia, made in… Germany? It’s the Zenit M

Leica is clearly in the mood for partnerships: A day after the company announced it was teaming up with Panasonic and Sigma on the L mount, Zenit took the wraps off the ‘M’, a Zenit-designed, Leica manufactured rangefinder camera which has (cough cough) rather a lot in common with Leica’s last-generation M Typ 240.

Leica and Zenit aren’t necessarily names that you’d immediately associate, but hey, in the words of one Leica executive I talked to, “that’s globalization for you!” In the latest sign that this ain’t your Großvater’s Leica, it is currently assembling the 24MP full-frame Zenit M rangefinder alongside the M10 at its Wetzlar plant in Germany.

As far as division of labor is concerned, I’m told that Zenit was responsible for the external design, and everything else is done at Wetzlar.

I must say, I rather like Zenit’s design touches. Somewhat more slab-sided than the Typ. 240, the Zenit M actually looks pretty cool to my eyes, and the asymmetrical curve of the top-plate acts as an optical illusion, making the M look slightly slimmer than the ‘original’ Leica.

Rather wonderfully, just like a Leica, the Zenit M has the model name and serial number engraved into the hotshoe assembly.

So far, so Leica. From the rear, the Zenit M is almost indistinguishable from the Typ 240. Only the ‘DESIGNED IN KRASNOGORSK’ gives it away. With my eye to the viewfinder, there’s no discernible difference in use, either.

At the heart of the Zenit M is the same full-frame 24MP CMOS sensor as – you guessed it – the Leica Typ 240. It also offers live view and HD movie recording.

The Zenit M will be available in a black or chrome finish, and will be shipping later this year or early 2019 for ‘between 4-5,000 Euros’ kitted with the Zenitar 35mm F1.0.

Leica M10-P real-world samples gallery updated

The new Leica M10-P updates the M10 with the addition of a touchscreen, electronic level and a quieter shutter. Image quality from the 24MP full-frame sensor and Maestro II processor is unchanged, but the somewhat more discreet ‘P’ variant could be more interesting to candid and street photographers than the stock M10.

We took the M10-P out for a weekend on the Washington coast, and we’ve just updated our previously-published gallery of sample images with a selection of images converted from Raw using ACR 11.

Hands-on with the new Leica M10-P

‘Go unannounced’ is the tagline that Leica is using for the new M10-P, which has been introduced alongside the standard M10. The M10-P is built around the same 24MP full-frame CMOS sensor and Maestro II processor, but offers a slightly more discreet, quieter operational experience, with a couple of other neat additions. Let’s take a closer look at exactly what’s new (and what has stayed the same).

Probably the most significant new feature is a touch-sensitive rear LCD. This makes it possible to quickly set the magnification point for accurate live view focus, and quickly zoom into (via a double-tap or a pinch motion) and flip through captured images, without using the 4-way controller on the right of the rear of the camera. Leica has also added an digital level gauge to the M10-P in live view mode, for those times when the vertical and horizontal optical framelines aren’t quite enough. The screen itself is the same 1.04 million-dot, 3″ display that we’re familiar with from the M10.

Another change compared to the standard M10 is the rear engraving to the right of the viewfinder, which now reads ‘Made in Germany’ as opposed to the more verbose ‘Leica Camera Wetzlar | Made in Germany’ on the M10.

Well for starters, there’s the addition of Leica’s classic top-plate engraving, which is not offered on the M10. Does this make the M10-P more discreet? Well… most people would probably say no. In fact quite the opposite in our opinion, but it certainly looks pretty.

Unarguably more discreet (and of some practical use) is the plain screw cover, where the red dot is normally to be found on the M10 and other standard non ‘P’ models. Underneath the slotted cover is a trim pot for the M10-P’s vertical rangefinder adjustment. It’s not uncommon for this to go out of alignment over time (or after a bump or two) and since it’s a relatively easy adjustment, a lot of experts will be pleased to have such easy access.

Will tinkering with the rangefinder alignment void your warrantee? That’s a little unclear. Our understanding from talking to Leica is that assuming the adjustment is done correctly, without any damage being caused to the camera, you should be fine. If in doubt, check.

Here’s another view of the M10-P’s fancy top-plate engraving and matching metal hotshoe cover. The rest of the design elements and controls are identical to the standard M10.

The M10-P shares a sensor with the standard M10, too. It’s a 24MP full-frame chip, with specially-designed microlenses to help mitigate corner vignetting with wide-angle lenses. On the upper left of the front of the M10-P is its single custom button, which can be set to manually magnify the image in live view mode, to help with accurate focusing. On the right is the frameline selector lever – also the same as the M10.

The ‘P’ in ‘M10-P’ supposedly stands for ‘Press’ (although there is some debate about that) but one thing that working photojournalists probably won’t appreciate about Leica’s M-series digital models is the awkward card and battery loading, which still requires….

….the complete removal of the baseplate. One small consolation (depending on how you look at it) is that the M10’s tripod socket is built into the camera, not the plate, as on some previous models. This should make it more secure, but the downside of course is that the card and battery compartments are entirely inaccessible when the M10-P is mounted to a tripod.

Realistically though, the M10-P isn’t really a tripod camera. Rangefinders are arguably at their best shooting handheld street and candid scenes, and this is where the M10-P’s quieter shutter becomes especially useful. The M10’s shutter isn’t exactly loud, but the M10-P definitely shoots with a much quieter, more muffled ‘clump’ sound.

Leica calls the shutter sound a ‘mere whisper’, which is overselling it a bit, but side by side against a 1960s M2, we believe Leica when the company says that the M10-P has the quietest shutter of any M-series camera, film or digital.

The M10-P is available now, at an MSRP of $ 7,995 – that’s $ 700 more than the standard M10.

Leica M10-P adds a touchscreen and removes the red dot

Leica has introduced the M10-P, a higher-priced version of the M10 that removes the famous red dot and adds a quieter shutter in order to make the camera ‘the stealthiest M ever’. Though ironically, if stealth is its aim, Leica has also added its trademark script to the top plate, which is hard to miss.

A more significant addition is a touchscreen LCD: the first to grace an M-series camera. This lets you position the area to magnify in live view or double-tap to jump straight to an enlarged view. You can also swipe and pinch-to-zoom in playback mode. There’s also a new spirit level on the LCD and in the viewfinder.

As with the M10, the M10-P has a 24MP CMOS sensor with an ISO range of 100-50,000, a 3″ LCD, Wi-Fi and – of course – the M’s timeless styling. Neither camera has I/O ports: not even USB.

The M10-P comes in black or silver and black and will be available today for $ 7995.

Leica releases Elpro 52 close-up lens adapter

Leica has announced the Elpro 52, a new close-up converter lens for select Leica M and TL lenses.

As its name suggests, the Elpro 52 can be screwed onto the front of any Leica M and TL lens that has a 52mm front filter thread. It also comes with stepping ring adapters so it’ll work with 46mm and 49mm front filter threads as well, making it compatible with more than 20 different lenses.

‘The Leica Elpro 52 will expand upon the capabilities of selected Leica M- and TL-Lenses, making them more suitable for macro photography,’ says Leica in the press release. ‘This lens holds true to the standard focusing and aperture settings Leica is known for, and ensures a light-weight and compact style as to not interfere with the lens handling while mounted.’

Leica APO-Summicron-SL 75mm F2 ASPH sample gallery

The Leica SL 75mm F2 was launched alongside the SL 90mm F2 earlier this year, and the pair of lenses share identical dimensions. The 75mm F2 is ever-so-slightly cheaper than its 90mm counterpart, but still impressively sharp on the SL’s 24MP full-frame sensor. We’ve been shooting with Leica’s latest short telephoto prime for a little while, and we’ve put together a gallery of real-world samples.

To get a sense of its performance, we hauled the 75mm F2 from sea-level urban portrait sessions all the way up to 6400 ft in Mt. Rainier National Park.

Leica Noctilux-M 75mm F1.25 ASPH: more fun than a Nissan Versa

Leica: the crazy diamond of the photography world. In an industry increasingly dominated by dull moments, it’s always nice to see a company consistently doing something brightly, colorfully different. Even when – or maybe especially when – that company appears so gleefully unconcerned with what their peers (it doesn’t quite make sense to say competitors) are up to in the meantime.

Only Leica could have made the Noctilux-M F1.25 75mm ASPH – a manual focus prime lens that weighs more than a kilo and costs as much as a new car (no, really). Inevitably, a lot of the responses to our coverage of this lens so far (and indeed of pretty much all Leica hardware) focus on the price, but at this point, this mode of criticism misses the point. Yes, Leica stuff is expensive. It always has been. Sure, there are cheaper alternatives, and there always have been – see also: organic avocados, brand-name printer ink, fancy chocolate (you know the stuff by the self checkouts, in the fancy gold paper that mum likes, with the sea salt) and cars that aren’t the Nissan Versa.

Using the 75mm F1.25 on the Leica M10

The 75mm Noctilux is not an everyday kind of a lens. Designed for use with the company’s digital rangefinder cameras, for starters there’s the small matter of its focal length. 75mm has always been a bit of a weird fit for Leica’s rangefinders, occupying an awkward position between the long-established standard 50mm and 90mm focal lengths. Mounting a 75mm lens on a Leica rangefinder brings up the 50mm framelines, with 75mm indicated roughly by a dotted rectangle just inside them.

Personally, I’m so used to ignoring the inner dotted lines when shooting with a 50mm that un-ignoring them when I actually want to shoot at 75mm is surprisingly difficult. Then again, I try to get into my apartment using my car keys at least once a week, so maybe you shouldn’t take anything I say too seriously.

All of Leica’s rangefinder cameras since the M4-P of 1980 have included 75mm framelines, indicated by broken lines inside the main (outer) 50mm framelines. As you can see, the massive 75mm F1.25 blocks a large portion of the frame. This view shows the maximum occlusion, which occurs at the minimum focus distance of 0.85m, with the built-in hood extended.

And then there’s the issue of viewfinder blockage. Regardless of the focus or hood position, as you can see from the picture above (taken through the viewfinder of an M10) the 75mm F1.25 obscures a very large portion of the frame, almost as far as the focusing patch. This is one of the reasons why Leica recommends the 75mm F1.25 should be used in live view mode, and preferably with the aid of the optional electronic viewfinders available for recent M-series digital cameras.

The other reason for using live view is focus accuracy. You can have the best technique in the world, but nailing focus on a short telephoto prime wide open at F1.25, with a rangefinder, isn’t easy. I did try Leica’s 2X screw-in magnifier, but it didn’t help my hit-rate much (and obviously it had no effect on the substantial viewfinder blockage).

Shot in relatively dim conditions, I selected F2 for this portrait because I was having so much difficulty getting accurate focus at F1.25 using live view on a Leica M10. Critical focus is acceptable here, but it’s still a hair away from where I was aiming.

Focus peaking and magnified live view don’t guarantee accurate focus, but they certainly make it easier. Even with these aids, however, the razor-thin depth of field and the sheer bulk of the lens both work against the rangefinder shooter. When taking photographs hand-held, it’s difficult to support the weight of the lens without shifting the focus ring. I’ve found that this often forces me into a loop of focus checking, recomposing, focus checking again, recomposing again (etc.). Especially when shooting portraits, the potential for slight subject movement adds yet another variable, and leads to yet more focus checking, recomposing, and checking again…

The Leica 75mm F1.25 weighs more than a kilo and its wide diameter mean that the M10 can’t lie flat on its base with the lens attached. For these reasons the lens has its own tripod mount.

Disabling automatic live view magnification helps avoid the need for constant recomposing, but the secret to accurate focus on an M10 with the 75mm F1.25 is bracketing: shoot a lot of photos, and bracket focus as you go. When you get a sharp result, trust me – the extra effort will have been worth it. Things are easier if you set up on a tripod, and the heavyweight 75mm Noctilux actually has its own tripod screw in the base, to avoid putting too much strain on the camera’s lens mount.

Using the 75mm F1.25 on the Leica SL

Despite being a native M-mount lens, the 75mm F1.25 handles very nicely on the SL. Arguably, in fact, it’s more pleasant to use on the larger, chunkier camera. Obviously the combination is heavier but the weight is better distributed, making the whole package feel balanced and notably less front-heavy than it does on the lighter (and grip-less) M10. Crucially, the SL’s large handgrip means that you don’t need to support the Noctilux’s weight entirely from the lens itself, which makes it less likely that you’ll accidentally nudge the focus or aperture rings when composing a shot.

On the Leica SL, things get a bit easier, partly thanks to the substantial grip and DSLR-style handing of the larger camera. This portrait was shot hand-held at F1.25.

The SL’s viewfinder makes for a better framing and focusing experience too, by virtue of the SL’s full-time live view and more DSLR-styled ergonomics. Leica’s M to L adapter is relatively slim, doesn’t add much extra weight and communicates the 6-bit code from the lens to the camera body just as it would on a digital M-mount camera.

Image quality

As far as the results are concerned, hopefully our gallery of sample images speak for themselves. Contrast across the frame is high and sharpness at F1.25 is pretty stunning. Longitudinal chromatic aberration is present if you go looking for it in areas where focus is just falling-off, (around the edges of my subject’s sunglasses in this shot is about as bad as it gets) but it’s generally inoffensive, and the bokeh at wide apertures is (I happen to think) delightful.

Shot wide open on a Leica M10, this portrait demonstrates the 75mm Noctilux’s key selling-points: creamy smooth bokeh, great sharpness and razor-thin depth of field. There’s a hint of longitudinal chromatic aberration in our subject’s hair as it goes out of focus, but it’s far from objectionable.

While accurate focus at F1.25 is a challenge, the incredibly thin depth of field opens up creative possibilities foreclosed by the older, slower, but generally more practical 75mm F2 Summicron. You could shoot the Noctilux at F8 but what would be the point? If you’re prepared to pay this much for a lens you’ll probably want to shoot it wide open.

Personally, I don’t gravitate to medium telephoto lenses. I tend to shoot mostly at 35mm, often at 28mm, and sometimes at 50mm. I have a 90mm, which mostly (weirdly) gets used for landscapes and urban details. Using the 75mm F1.25 hasn’t converted me to that focal length by any means, but its rendition is so unique that while I might not have enjoyed some of the experience of shooting with it, I do feel that the results go some way to justifying the awkward handling.

Ultimately, the 75mm Noctilux won’t be made in large numbers and it won’t be owned by many people. It isn’t a magic lens – there are plenty of excellent alternatives available for much less money, albeit of course for other systems. Leicaland is a different country, and one that will remain foreign for most photographers. But hey – it’s a fun place to visit, from time to time. Plus ça change, as the Germans don’t say.

Regardless, it would be unfair to dismiss the Noctilux as a ‘stunt’ lens that exists only to show off the expertise of Leica’s optical and mechanical engineering. It’s more than that – and it’s priced accordingly.

The Leica X-U (Typ 113) inherits the 16MP APS-C sensor and 35mm-equivalent, F1.7 lens from the company’s ‘X’ compact camera into a waterproof, ruggedized, go-anywhere body. Although the X-U was released in early 2016, our recent experience with waterproof compact cameras got us thinking – how much more performance would $ 3000 extra buy us? We’ve been putting the X-U through its paces, from lakes in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains all the way to the 1950m / 6400ft Sunrise viewpoint in Mount Rainier National Park.

Leica participates in $121M funding round for computational photography company Light

As far as camera makers go, Leica and Light could not be further apart. Leica has a rich photographic heritage and, at least in the minds of many photographers, stands for beautifully manufactured mechanical devices. Light is a very new company and with its 16-sensor L16 camera is by many regarded as a spearhead of innovation in digital imaging.

Nonetheless – or maybe because of those differences – Leica is now an investor and shareholder in Light. The latter just announced a $ 121 million Series D funding round led by SoftBank Vision Fund. Leica is one of the participants in the round as well, investing an undisclosed amount.

The company confirms that we will see Light-powered smartphones later this year

In the announcement the company confirms that we will see Light-powered smartphones later this year and says it is planning to use the funding to expand in sectors beyond consumer imaging.

“The new funding will allow Light to expand the reach of its imaging platform beyond consumer photography and into security, robotic, automotive, aerial and industrial imaging applications,”

Leica on the other hand seems to be hoping to get its hands on on some of the computational imaging technologies that Light is developing.

“With the rapid development of the computational photography, partnering with the innovators at Light [allows] Leica to extend its tradition of excellence into the computational photography era.”
