Godox launches mini radio flash unit for Sony mirrorless cameras

23 Nov

Flash and accessory manufacturer Godox has announced a new small flash unit that it says is designed to go with the Sony mirrorless range of cameras. The Godox TT350S features 2.4GHz radio control and TTL exposure metering, and offers a guide number of 36m@ISO 100. The company says that the unit is compatible with the Sony a7R II, a7R, as well as the a58 and a77ll SLT cameras. Some RX models are also able to pair with the unit.

The radio controlled system allows the TT350S to work alongside other Godox radio flash units and studio heads, and the flash can operate as a master or slave in multiple-head set-ups. Three groups are programmed into the control system along with 16 channels, while the maximum working range is said to be 30m. High speed sync is provided via an HSS mode that can work with shutter speeds of up to 1/8000 sec, and the unit can be switched from TTL to manual operation to make use of 22 output levels from 1/128th power. An automatically zooming head covers focal lengths of 24-105mm, and a hinge allows the head to tilt but not to swivel.

The TT350S is powered by two AA batteries which the company claims should be good for 210 full power bursts. There is no official pricing yet, but one UK ebay seller is offering pre-orders for £73 and says delivery is expected early January.

For more information about the TT350S visit the Godox website.

AirSelfie, a pocket-sized camera drone, launches on Kickstarter

18 Nov

An London-based startup is looking to fund production of a tiny, flying selfie camera called AirSelfie. AirSelfie features four propellers surrounded by safety guards and is compact enough to slot inside of a smartphone case. It features a 5MP camera that can take photos and record videos from up to 20m/66ft.

AirSelfie produces its own 2.4GHz WiFi network to which smartphones can connect. Users control the drone using a mobile app available for iOS and Android, both of which include a ‘selfie delay timer’ with a range up to 10 seconds. A maximum of eight consecutive photos can be taken. Content is saved to an included 4GB microSD card. Unfortunately, flight duration is very low at only 3 minutes per charge.

A Kickstarter campaign seeking funding for AirSelfie went live today with a funding goal of nearly $ 50,000. Assuming that goal is met, the company plans to offer the AirSelfie at a reduced price of $ 249, with two units costing $ 478. The team behind AirSelfie anticipates shipping the first 3,000 pre-ordered units in March 2017, with everything else shipping starting in April 2017.

Press release

AirSelfie Launches Best Pocket-Sized Flying Camera for Smartphones

Armed with a $ 3M investment, AirSelfie will debut on Kickstarter November 17 to give fans early access to the first pocket-sized flying camera; pre-orders will be delivered March 2017

London, November 17, 2016 – AirSelfie has today announced the launch of the first pocket-sized flying camera, the only portable flying camera that integrates with smartphones. Comprised of four powerful propellers and a 5-megapixel video camera, AirSelfie is smaller than a smartphone and can fly vertically up to 66 feet, allowing users to take aerial selfies of themselves and their friends. The device connects to the most popular smartphones, including iPhone (6, 6s, 7 and 7 Plus), Huawei P9, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. The device includes self-generated WiFi and comes equipped with a rechargeable battery through a cell phone case, as well as the option to purchase an external power bank. Additionally, a vibration-absorber system and in-flight stability systems guarantee stable, clear, flowing images.

AirSelfie is available for pre-order via Kickstarter beginning November 17, 2016, for delivery in March 2017.

“Our team of 60 seasoned technology professionals and enthusiasts researched, designed and created a flying camera that exceeds all current standards,” said Edoardo Stroppiana, co-founder of AirSelfie. “We saw an increasing need for a device that goes beyond a selfie stick, allowing users to take pictures from all angles, and we’re excited to introduce AirSelfie to Millennials and consumers around the world. It sets a completely new bar for the market.”

With AirSelfie, users can:

  • Take group selfies and family photos from up to 66 feet away, capturing both people and panoramas
  • Take indoor and outdoor aerial photos of subjects and locations that would otherwise be unreachable (e.g. monuments and stadiums during sporting events)
  • Take videos from perspectives that were formerly impossible
  • Use the device as a monitoring camera (when the device is not flying and is connected to a power source)
  • Use the video as a work tool (for example, time-lapse shots of company event setups)

AirSelfie’s 5-megapixel video camera and four powerful propellers are enclosed in an Italian-designed, stylish and lightweight (52g) aluminum case that measures 3.72 x 2.65 x 0.42 inches – smaller than a smartphone. The device attaches to users’ smartphones using a special cover available for iPhone and Samsung which contains a battery that can recharge AirSelfie in just 30 minutes. Backers can also purchase an external power bank which guarantees up to 20 full charges and allows those without a compatible phone to use and charge AirSelfie.

How it works

One of the key differentiating—and appealing—features of AirSelfie is its ease of use. To activate AirSelfie, the user simply removes it from its case and turns it on. The device connects automatically to smartphones via WiFi—the flying camera creates the WiFi (2.4GHz) network itself and it is immediately ready for take-off.

AirSelfie users must simply download the free iOS and Android app in order to control the device’s movements through three different flight modes. AirSelfie can be returned to its departure point either manually or automatically. When users are finished using the device, it’s easy to return it to its landing spot—simply press the button labelled “slide to land” and AirSelfie descends and turns off. Users can also directly reposition the device by hand with no risk whatsoever of damaging it or themselves.

Using the “selfie delay timer” function, users can take timed photos, giving them up to 10 seconds to get into position and hide their smartphone so that it doesn’t appear in photos. Users can also take up to eight consecutive shots. AirSelfie’s technology integrates directly with social media, making it easy to post photos and videos directly to users’ accounts.

AirSelfie comes equipped with a 4 GB micro SD memory card and a 260mAh 7.4v battery that enables three minutes of flight time.

AirSelfie on Kickstarter

To give consumers a special first look at AirSelfie, the company is launching a Kickstarter campaign that will go live on November 17, 2016. Consumers can purchase AirSelfie via the Kickstarter website or Kickstarter app. As an added incentive, the first 1,000 supporters have the option of becoming AirSelfie Ambassadors by pre-ordering the first version of the flying camera at the discounted price of $ 199; the regular retail price will be $ 300. Additionally, the power bank will be available as a standalone product for $ 69 or as part of the AirSelfie package for $ 246. The power bank will be delivered in April.

Production of the gadget will begin once the threshold of $ 50,000 is reached. After the first 1,000 AirSelfies have sold, the company will produce another 2,000 models, which will be available for the reduced price of $ 249. Consumers will also be able to purchase two AirSelfies for the price of $ 478. The first 3,000 pre-orders will be delivered in March of 2017, with the rest, including the power bank packages, being delivered in April of 2017.

“People have the impression that camera drones are costly, difficult to operate and unwieldy,” added Stroppiana. “AirSelfie redefines the space with a device that’s small, light and easy to use. This Kickstarter campaign will enable the launch of a large-scale AirSelfie production in a matter of months. We have succeeded in developing a great product, and we can’t wait to share it with our growing base of AirSelfie enthusiasts.”

In 2017, AirSelfie will hit the market for $ 300. It will be available in other colors and will be compatible with additional smartphone models.

For additional information and other opportunities to support the project, visit the AirSelfie Kickstarter page.

Kipon launches EF to Sony E adapters with built-in variable ND filter

29 Oct

Chinese lens and accessory maker Kipon has introduced an adapter that includes a variable neutral density filter, primarily for video shooters. The filter is placed between a Canon EF-S mount and a Sony E-mount body. The Kipon EF-S/E AF ND retains the autofocus and image stabilisation features of the lens, according to the company, and EXIF data is communicated so it can be recorded in the image files. The adapter also allows manual focusing of the lens to trigger MF assistance features of the camera – such as peaking or magnification.

Kipon has produced adapters that contain graduated neutral density filters before but this is the first that has a variable ND filter. The filter is turned via a wheel that sticks out of the barrel and is marked with values between 1.5 and 7 f-stops. The idea of the adapter is that wide apertures can be used with shutter speeds appropriate for shooting video – as well as for stills shooters who want a shallow depth of field outdoors on bright days.

The adapter features an EF-S mount, so that it can use both EF and EF-S lenses but covers the full frame image circle for use on a7 series cameras.

The company suggests that the selling price should be 45,000 yen before tax, which is approximately $ 430.

You can read more about the adapter, including camera compatibility, on this translated version of Japanese agent Focus Workshop’s website.

Manfrotto launches new FluidTech Base and monopod kits for stills and video

22 Oct

Accessory-maker Manfrotto has introduced a new series of monopod kits called XPRO Monopod+ and a new FluidTech Base to help videographers to achieve smooth pan, tilt and swivel motions. The new Monopod+ models come in a choice of four or five sections. The legs are made of aluminum or carbon fiber and kits are available with and without heads. The actual monopods are the same as the existing XPRO models but they come with the FluidTech base included.

The new base is slightly larger than the one it replaces and offers three-way motion instead of just support for panning. The rotation can be locked off to allow only panning or unlocked to support smooth action in three directions. The base attaches and detaches by screwing it to the foot of the monopod, and while the base will hold the monopod upright on its own Manfrotto doesn’t suggest using it self-standing with a camera attached.

The new FluidTech Base will be $ 99.99/£74.95 and the kits including a monopod will start at $ 189.99/£144.95.

For more information visit the Manfrotto website.

Press release:

Introducing the new FLUIDTECH – Full Fluid Base: first of its kind 3D-movement for the smoothest video footage

  • Easy, instant locking and adjustment with the Quick Power Lock system
  • Superior stability and portability thanks to powerful lightweight aluminium & carbon fibre
  • Flexibility to switch from photo to video thanks to the accessory base

October 2016: Manfrotto, world leader in the photography, imaging equipment and accessories industry, presents a new offering featuring high-performance monopods for professional videographers and photographers: the new XPRO Monopod+ family.

When volume and weight need to be minimal, set-up speed is of primary importance, in crowded places where there’s no room for a tripod, or for creative, overhead footage – whenever a tripod is not the option, monopods are the solution. They enable users to quickly and easily move from one shooting point to another, providing stable support to video and photo equipment, ensuring incredibly smooth footage, ultra-sharp photos and creative shooting perspectives.

This exciting new generation brings image makers the ground-breaking FLUIDTECH – Full Fluid Base, making Manfrotto XPRO Monopod+ the first of its kind on the market featuring fluidity on all 3 axes to deliver ultimate smoothness in an extremely compact solution for advanced video shooting.

Google launches Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones with gyroscope-based video stabilization

05 Oct

Google has just launched its 2016 smartphones. The Nexus moniker has gone and the new models are Pixel-branded, just like the company’s top-end Chromebooks and tablet. The Pixel and Pixel XL are made by HTC, though only the Google logo appears on the device, and pretty much only differ in terms of screen size and resolution as well battery capacity. The smaller Pixel sports a 5″ 1080p AMOLED display and a 2,770mAh battery, while the XL variant comes with a 5.5″ QHD-screen and a 3,450mAh battery.

In the camera department the specifications have not changed much from last year’s Nexus devices. A 1/2.3″ 12MP sensor with 1.55µm pixel size is paired with an F2.0 aperture. There is no optical image stabilization but Google has added a new gyroscope-based video stabilization system that reads gyro data 200 times a second for smoother panning and shake-free handheld recording. The camera can record 4K video, and in stills mode Google’s excellent HDR+ mode is on by default, using an image stacking approach to reduce noise and capture better detail. In addition Pixel owners can store unlimited full-size images in Google’s cloud service.

Check out the photography-specific features of the Google Pixel from the announcement.

Both phones come with Google’s brand new Android 7.0 Nougat operating system and are powered by Qualcomm’s latest top-end chipset Snapdragon 821. 4GB of RAM can be combined with either 32 or 128 GB of local storage and a fingerprint reader on the back provides extra security. The Pixel phones will be available in Quite Black, Very Silver, and Really Blue color options. Pricing starts at $ 649 for the standard Pixel. In the US the devices will be exclusive to carrier Verizon, with pre-orders starting today.
