Leica launches 9-lens Thalia series for cinematographers

Leica has announced a new range of cinema lenses that is aimed at photographers looking for a classic vintage look and exceptional bokeh. There will be nine focal lengths in the Thalia series that almost mirror the focal lengths the company offers its S medium format customers, but this new range is designed to cover a wider picture area to suit users of the Alexa 65, the VistaVison and Super 35mm formats.

The all-prime set-up comprises:

  • 24mm T3.6
  • 30mm T2.9
  • 35mm T2.6
  • 45mm T2.9
  • 55mm T2.8
  • 70mm T2.6
  • 100mm T2.2
  • 120mm T2.6
  • 180mm T3.6

Leica says it hasn’t gone for a super-sharp image but rather provides a look that many cinematographers search for by using older lenses with digital sensors. It claims the images are ‘clear without being overly sharp and focus is smooth and forgiving without looking soft. Skin tones are natural and smooth with accurate color rendition.’

The iris of each lens features 15 blades arranged in a mechanism that produces a circular aperture throughout the complete range of stops, according to Leica. The company says that this creates ‘a cinematic bokeh that comes alive with character. Out-of-focus elements maintain their structure, which further adds to the sense of dimensionality in the image.’
For the size of the covering circle the lenses are said to be relatively compact and lightweight, and each has a diameter of 95mm. The lenses will be available in PL mount and come with /i Technology contacts for metadata transfer.

Leica Thalia: New Lenses for Big Picture Cinematography

Responding to the increasing need for character-driven, large-format optics, CW Sonderoptic introduces the Leica Thalia series of prime lenses. The set of 9 spherical lenses provides an image circle of 60mm diagonal, which covers ARRI Alexa 65, VistaVision, and Super 35 film and digital formats while maintaining a consistent look and feel through all focal lengths.

The focal lengths of the lenses include 24, 30, 35, 45, 55, 70, 100, 120, and 180mm. The lenses are available in PL mount and offer /i Technology metadata contacts in the mount. The lenses maintain a 95mm front diameter and matched focus and iris ring locations for consistent accessory use. For large format lenses they are also incredibly compact and lightweight, with lengths between 4.9”-6.9” (124.5-175cm) and weighing between 2.4-3.75lbs (1.06-1.6kg).

One of the most unique features of the Leica Thalia lenses is their iris design, which maintains a circular shape through the entire aperture range. In addition to always being round, the bokeh is smooth, distinct and full of character, which helps the out of focus elements maintain structure and shape without falling apart.

Although the lenses are based on the Leica S medium format lenses, they feature significant optical and mechanical changes, including: increased image circle, new coatings, new iris design, 270° rotation cam focus mechanism, and entirely new mechanics and housings. Additionally, the 55mm lens is a completely new lens.

“The look of these lenses answers what we have heard from many cinematographers, and not just in regards to image circle,” said managing director Gerhard Baier.

“While they are new lenses, they do offer many of the characteristics that have encouraged cinematographers to pair older lenses with digital sensors. They are clear without being overly sharp. Focus is smooth and forgiving without appearing soft. Skin tones are natural and smooth with an accurate color rendition.”

The Leica Thalia lenses will be on display at the CW Sonderoptic booth at NAB (C4345) and will start delivering in Summer 2017.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 launches with selfie mirror and close-up lens attachment

Fujifilm has announced the Instax Mini 9, a new instant camera that has launched in five colors: Lime Green, Flamingo Pink, Smoky White, Ice Blue, and Cobalt Blue. The Instax Mini 9 builds upon the company’s Instax Mini 8, bringing with it a selfie mirror as well as a new close-up lens attachment enabling photographers to snap photos as close as 35cm / 14in.

Fujifilm says the ‘popular’ features from the previous model are rolled over into the Instax Mini 9, including auto exposure. The camera chooses the optimal brightness setting for any given snapshot, highlighting the chosen setting by illuminating one of four lights corresponding the following settings: Indoors, Cloudy, Sunny (overcast), and Sunny (bright). The user then manually switches the dial to that setting.

Other features include a 0.37x viewfinder with target spot, an automatic film feeding system, flash with an effective range from 0.6m to 2.7m, and support for two ordinary AA batteries. A pair of AA batteries can power the camera through approximately 10 Instax Mini film packs before needing replaced.

The Instax Mini 9 will launch in the U.S. and Canada next month for $ 69.95 USD and $ 99.99 CAD, and then in the U.K. in May for £77.99.

OPPO launches F3 Plus with dual selfie cameras

Chinese smartphone maker OPPO has launched its latest upper mid-range model, the F3 Plus, and while the new device unfortunately doesn’t come with OPPO’s recently displayed 5x zoom camera unit, it does offer an unusual imaging feature: a dual-front camera.

The front unit features a 16MP main camera with 1/3″ sensor and F2.0 aperture for standard selfies. It is accompanied by an 8MP module with 1/4″ sensor and a super-wide-angle lens with 120 degree angle of view for group selfies. Thanks to built-in facial recognition, the camera app can notify users to switch to the wide angle camera if there are more than three people in the frame.

The rear camera is more conventional but offers capable-looking specifications. A 16MP 1/2.8″ Sony IMX398 sensor is paired with a fast F1.7 aperture and optical image stabilization. Dual PDAF doubles the ‘focus pixels’ on the image sensor for up to 40% faster focus times in low light. 

In the processor department you’ll find Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 653 octa-core offering, backed by 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage. A dual-slot card tray can hold two Nano SIM cards or one Nano SIM card and a microSD card, expanding memory to up to 256GB. OPPO claims the beefy 4,000 mAh battery allows for a standby time of more than 284 hours. It also features the company’s own VOOC fast charging technology which can get you up to 2 hours of talk time with 5 minutes of charging.

At the front you’ll find a 6″ 1080p IPS LCD display that is covered by 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The F3 Plus features a metal unibody and comes in black or gold. It will be available from April 1st in a number of Asian regions. No information on pricing or global availability has been released yet.

Apple launches new 9.7″ iPad and limited edition iPhone 7 in red

Apple has today announced a new 9.7″ iPad model that is simply called the iPad and replaces the iPad Air 2. Compared to the latter, the A8X processor has been replaced with the A9 chip that is also being used in the iPhone 6s. Due to a larger 8610 mAh battery the new model is at 7.5mm also 1.4mm thicker than the iPad Air 2. The rest of the specifications, including the 9.7″ display with a resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels, the 8MP/F2.4 rear camera and the 1.2MP front camera remain unchanged. TouchID with Apple Pay is on board as well. 

In an unusual move, Apple has lowered prices. In the past 9.7″ iPads started at $ 499. The 32GB base version of the new model is only $ 329. The 128GB variant will set you back $ 429. An additional $ 130 gets you the cellular version of the respective models. The new iPad will be available in Silver, Space Gray, and Gold starting March 24 in the US and 20 other countries. Apple also reduced the price of the iPad mini 4 which now comes in only one storage version with 128GB at $ 399. The cellular version is $ 529.

In addition to the iPad, Apple also launched the (Product) Red edition of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Proceeds of the (Product) Red line go towards charitable causes – in this case, they go to the Global Fund to support HIV/AIDS programs.

The new models only come as 128GB and 256GB storage versions. The red iPhone 7 starts at $ 750, the Plus version is $ 870. In both cases an additional $ 100 gets you the 256GB model. The devices will be available from March 24.

Also new is a video sharing app called Clips. It lets you treat your videos with a large variety of transformations, overlays and filters and also offers a number of more conventional video editing features. Final results can be shared to any app but Clip lacks some of the social networking features of apps like Vine or Snapchat.

Oberwerth launches Donau line of leather lens pouches

German manufacturer Oberwerth, best known for its high-end leather camera accessories and bags, has launched its new Donau line of leather lens pouches. Like other Oberwerth products, the pouches are handmade in Germany from soft cowhide leather. A surface finish provides stain protection and should preserve the natural material’s shine for a long time to come. In the interior the pouches are lined with non-pilling wool felt to keep your valuable glass scratch-free. 

The Donau pouches come in sizes S, M, L and XL to accommodate lenses of various dimensions but at a width of 9.5 cm/3.74 in and a diameter of 9 cm/3.54 in even the biggest XL version seems more suitable for a large prime rather than fast tele-zooms lenses. Mitakon launches Mk ll Nikon to Fuji X Turbo adapter that maintains angle of view

Chinese optical manufacturer Zhong Yi Optics has announced availability of a new version of its Turbo adapter that allows full-frame Nikon lenses to be mounted on Fujifilm X series compact system cameras while retaining the intended field of view.

The Lens Turbo ll N/G-FX uses a lens construction that reduces the effective focal length of the mounted lens by 0.726x, which compensates for the crop factor encountered when full frame lenses are used in front of an APS-C sensor – such as those used in the Fujifilm X series bodies. The compensation doesn’t work out exactly though, as a 50mm lens will end up acting as a 55mm would (it’s a net 1.09x crop). The focal length reduction also has the side-effect of increasing the maximum aperture of the lens by one stop.

Mitakon says that the new 4-element version of the Nikon adapter, which is also available for Canon and M42 lens uses, has improved optics which bring better resolution and aberration correction in the corners of the frame. The adapter is 32mm deep, has a diameter of 63mm and weighs 165g/5.82oz, and costs ¥21,000 plus tax/$ 150. For more information see the Mitakon website.

The Fuji X Camera Lens Turbo Adapter (Ver II) from Mitakon allows lenses to be mounted to APS-C format Fuji cameras, increasing the angle of view by 0.726x and the maximum aperture of the lens by 1 f-stop.

The four optical elements of the Lens Turbo adapter condense light from the full frame lens and project it onto the camera’s sensor allowing the sensor to capture all of the transmitted light, negating the crop factor and effectively producing full-frame coverage on non-full-frame sensors. A corresponding increase in the maximum aperture of 1 f-stop makes the lens more effective in low-light situations.

This adapter features 4 optical elements including one extra-low dispersion (ED) element which reduces aberrations for better delineated images. The adapter offers a sturdy metal construction and stainless steel mounts, it attaches to both camera and lens with little play and includes a front and rear protective cap. The Lens Turbo is a manual adapter offering no electronic communication between lens and camera. It is not compatible with Blackmagic cinema cameras.

Meyer Optik launches Kickstarter campaign to fund third Trioplan lens – the 35+

German lens manufacturer Meyer Optik Gorlitz intends to produce the ‘last chapter’ of its ‘Trioplan Trilogy’ if it gets enough funding from its latest Kickstarter campaign to build the Trioplan 35+. The new lens will sit alongside the company’s 100mm F2.8 and 50mm F2.9 Trioplan ‘Soap Bubble’ lenses and will have a maximum aperture of F2.8.

As with the 100mm and 50mm models, the 35mm lens will be based on a historic optical design but will use modern coated glass from Schott and Ohara. This time though, the construction will shift away from the traditional three-elements-in-three-groups of the standard Cooke triplet and will have an additional pair of elements at the front to adapt the design for full frame sensors. The original Trioplan 1.8in lens this one is based on was designed for 8mm film and was telephoto for the format, according to the company, so some changes had to be made to alter it to be a moderate wide for 35mm-style sensors. The extra two elements account for the + in the 35+ name.

The new lens will focus to 0.3m and its 12-bladed iris will provide a minimum aperture of F22. Meyer says it intends to make the lens in a range of mounts:

  • Sony E
  • FujiX
  • Micro Four Thirds
  • M42
  • Pentax-K
  • Leica M (rangefinder not supported/focusing via live view)

The ‘soap bubble’ name comes from a characteristic of the design that renders out-of-focus highlights in dramatic style when the lens is used wide open.

Fotodiox launches soda-can sized LED lights with Fresnel focusing

Accessory manufacturer Fotodiox has introduced a battery-powered LED lighting head that uses a Fresnel lens to create a focusing spot function – and the whole thing is as small as a can of soda. The new PopSpot J-500 comes with removable barn doors and can run via the supplied AC adapter or with a NP-F750 video camera battery.

Using only white LEDs the head has a color balance of 5600k (+/- 300) but will accept filters for matching to tungsten or other light sources. The focusing spot allows the beam of light to be varied between 25° and 55° as the lens is rotated, and the output of the light can be controlled using a 0-100% dimmer switch. A fully charged battery can run the light for up to an hour and twenty minutes at 100% power, or three hours and forty five minutes at 50%. The company says that the emittance at the 55° spot is 2258lx, and is 5400lx at the 25° position.

The head measures 3¼ x 3¼ x 8¼ inches (8 x 8 x 21cm) without the battery and weighs 2 lbs / 0.95kg, and is available on its own in a three-head kit. The single head costs $ 274.95 without the battery module and $ 399.95 with it, while the three-head kit costs $ 1099.95 including two batteries of each head. Adobe Camera Raw 9.9 launches with new camera and lens profile support

Adobe has announced the release of Camera Raw 9.9 for Creative Cloud subscribers, adding expanded lens profile and camera raw support. In addition to the new support, ACR 9.9 fixes a trio of bugs, including a ‘rare crash’ associated with JPEGs, a bug that affected Lens Profile Auto Matching when used with Zeiss Batis 85mm lenses, and an Upright bug issue.

The latest version of Camera Raw adds support for the following cameras:

  • Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II
  • Casio EX-ZR3200
  • Fujifilm GFX 50S
  • Fujifilm X100F
  • Fujifilm X-A10
  • Fujifilm X-T20
  • Leica M10
  • Olympus E-M1 Mark II
  • Panasonic DC-FZ80
  • Panasonic DC-GF9
  • Panasonic DC-GH5
  • Panasonic DMC-TZ82
  • Phase One IQ3 100MP (“S” compression mode not supported)

The update also adds support for another 28 lens profiles, including the iPhone 7 lenses, the DJI Mavic Pro FC220, several Nikon F and Canon EF lenses, and more. The full list can be found here. Existing Camera Raw users can update to the new version by selecting the ‘Help’ menu in the application, then ‘Update.’

Manfrotto launches National Geographic Australia Collection bags

Manfrotto has launched its new National Geographic Australia Collection, a line of camera bags with designs said to be inspired by the Australian Outback. The lineup includes five bags, each with the same blue and ochre colors; sizes and styles vary, and include two messenger bags, one 3-way camera bag, a backpack and a ‘belly bag.’

The new collection, which Manfrotto refers to as the ‘NG Australia’ line, is made from fabric and leather, with the interior fabric bits featuring a eucalyptus-leaf print. The internal cushioned dividers can be adjusted via Velcro straps. Each bag has its own pockets and space arrangements. The backpack, for example, can accommodate up to a 15-inch laptop as well as a DSLR with an attached lens and up to five extra lenses, while the belly bag is just big enough to hold a CSC and a couple extra lenses.

All five bags are currently available through Manfrotto’s UK website. The prices are as follows:
