Synology launches lower cost NAS with DS1817 and DS1517

17 Jun

Storage solutions company Synology has released ‘value’ versions of two of its recent NAS systems that use lower spec processors, less RAM and which have less comprehensive software packages. The Disk Station DS1817 and DS1517 are slightly scaled back alternatives to the DS1817+ and DS1517+ devices.

Technical differences include the use of 32-bit 1.7GHz Annapurna CPUs instead of the Intel Atom 64-bit 2.4GHz processors of the ‘+’ models, as well as 2GB (DS1517) and 4GB (DS1817) of RAM instead of up to 8GB. The DS1517 has no expandable memory options, while the DS1817 has built in 10GbE instead of the option to run with 10GbE or M.2 SSD cache like the DS1817+. As standard the DS1817 offers sequential throughput of up to 1,577 MB/s reading and 739 MB/s writing, while the DS1517 can manage reading throughput of up to 436.32 MB/s and writing throughput over 449.69 MB/s.

The DS1517 offers 5 drive bays and the DS1817 has eight, but both can couple with two DX517 expansion units which can hold a further five drives each. The maximum capacity of the DS1517 is 50TB, or 150TB when the two DX517 units capacity is included, while the DS1817 can manage 80TB, or 180TB with the DX517s .

The company says that the biggest differences between the value units and the ‘+’ units is the software packages that come with them. The value DS1817 and DS1517 come with fewer business applications and a more limited compatibility with certain file types.

  • DS1817 – $ 849.99/£689/€793 ex tax
  • DS1817+ (2GB) – $ 849.99/£688.33.80/€809 ex tax
  • DS1817+ (8GB) – $ 949.9/£745/€875 ex tax
  • DS1517 – $ 599.99/£567/€653 ex tax
  • DS1517+ (2GB) – $ 699.99/£567/€666 ex tax
  • DS1517+ (8GB) -$ 799.99/£623/€732 ex tax

Follow these links for more detailed comparisons between the DS1517 and DS1517+ and the DS1817 and DS1817+ on the Synology website. These products come with a 3-year warranty, though in many countries a further two years is available.

Camtraptions launches PIR Motion Sensor

14 Jun

Camtraptions has launched a new camera trap sensor that is designed for taking photographs of rare and nocturnal wildlife. The sensor can be deployed and left in place for weeks or even months at a time. It also allows for setup and triggering of flash guns or other light sources.

Camtraptions, founded by wildlife photographer Will Burrard-Lucas, has been creating sensors for DSLR camera trap photography since 2014. Over the last three years, the company has gathered feedback from its users in order to develop a new sensor that is easier to use than previous versions and offers a number of innovative features for both still photography and video shooting.

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_6002295627″,”galleryId”:”6002295627″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

The new sensor comes with a weather-proof housing and adjustable ‘blinkers’ that limit the sensor’s field of view to offer better control over composition. It can be either strapped to a tree or mounted on a small tripod next to an animal trail or other focal points for wildlife. The Camtraptions sensor is compatible with Canon, Nikon and Sony cameras, with more camera brands to be supported in the near future. The sensor can be pre-ordered now for £150 ($ 191) at Camtraptions.com where you’ll also find more information and product videos.

Press Release: Professional Camera Trap Photography Made Easy

12 June 2017, London, UK – Camtraptions has reinvented the camera trap sensor, making it easier than ever before to take high-quality photographs of rare and nocturnal wildlife.

A camera trap can be left out for long periods of time, just waiting for the moment that an animal enters its field of view. The camera trap sensor then detects the animal and automatically triggers the camera. Multiple camera traps can be deployed at once and left in place for weeks or even months at a time in order to capture images of extremely rare or elusive animals. Placing a camera in advance of the animal turning up also gives the photographer time to set up attractive, studiolike lighting in order to take creative images of nocturnal wildlife.

Camtraptions has been creating sensors for DSLR camera trap photography since 2014. The original Camtraptions PIR motion sensor broke new ground by making it easy for anyone to turn an old DSLR camera into a high-quality camera trap for photographing wildlife.

Photographers have used the Camtraptions sensor to win awards in some of the world’s most prestigious competitions. Richard Peters, for example, used the Camtraptions sensor to take his image “Shadow Walker”, which won the Urban category of Wildlife Photographer of the Year and was also the overall winner in the GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

Over the last three years, Camtraptions has gathered feedback from its users and taken the collective experience of camera trappers around the world to develop a new sensor that is easier to use than ever and introduces a number of innovative features for both still photography and video shooting.

The new sensor incorporates a rugged weather-proof housing and adjustable “blinkers” that limit the sensor’s field of view to provide greater control over the composition of the final image. It is very discreet and can be either strapped to a tree or mounted on a small tripod next to an animal trail or some other focal point for wildlife.

Will Burrard-Lucas, founder of Camtraptions and a wildlife photographer himself, said “we launched the new sensors to our existing customers last month and the first batch sold out in a couple of days. Our second batch of sensors will start shipping next week. People are already using the new sensor to photograph polar bears in the Arctic, tigers in India, jaguars in South America, lions in Africa and cougars in the US. Many people are also using the new sensors closer to home, to take creative images of wildlife in their own backyards. For me the most rewarding part is seeing the wonderful images of the natural world that our customers are getting.”

The Camtraptions sensor is compatible with Canon, Nikon and Sony cameras, with more camera brands to be supported in the near future. The sensor can be preordered now for £150 at Camtraptions.com.

Meyer Optik launches modern version of historic Lydith 30mm F3.5

09 Jun

German optical manufacturer Meyer-Optik-Gorlitz has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help it reintroduce its Lydith 30mm F3.5 lens. The original lens was launched in 1964 and the forthcoming version will remain true to the basic design of five elements in five groups, but the new company will be updating a number of its features.

Meyer will use Schott glass, modern coatings and a 12-bladed iris instead of the 10 of the original lens. The modern Meyer Optik trades on the interesting ‘bubble’ bokeh of its Trioplan lenses and has gone to some lengths to ensure bokeh is equally exciting to the eye in its modern relaunched lenses.

The original Lydith from 1964

The Lydith will offer a closest focusing distance of just 16cm/8in, which is approximately half that of the 1964 lens, and although the company hasn’t said specifically it is likely that it will have a click-less aperture ring as well.

The standard price of this manual focus lens on the Kickstarter page is $ 749, though some early bird offers were left at the time of writing. The earliest shipping date is December 2017, with the main batch going out in February 2018.

For more information about the company see the Meyer-Optik-Gorlitz website or the Lydith 30mm F3.5 Kickstarter page.

Manufacturer’s newsletter

Meet our new lens – create magic

Dear Meyer-Optik-Görlitz friend,

We are very excited and proud to introduce you to the next in our oustanding line of art lenses – the Lydith 30mm f3.5

One of the widest lenses in the Meyer-Optik lineup, the Lydith will impress you with its versatility at all distances. Exceptional sharpness, contrast and colour fidelity and it’s wonderful ability to create images with that indefinable magic is how this lens can best be described. It is a lens that will allow you to creatively capture those “magic moments”.

Designed in the late 1950s and introduced in 1964, the modern version of the Lydith will be updated with high-perfomance lens coatings and a short minimum focusing distance of 8 inches (16 cm). Like all of Meyer-Optik’s lenses, the Lydith will be fully manual, 100 percent handmade in Germany.

We think you are going to fall in love with the way it renders colors, its exceptional sharpness and, of course, it’s signature creamy bokeh not only in the background but also in the front.

Don’t miss out – visit our Kickstarter now and be one of the first in the world to own the modern version of this classic lens.

Best regards,

Dr. Stefan Immes and the Meyer-Optik Team

Sandmarc launches Kickstarter for smartphone polarizer and ND-filters

08 Jun

Sandmarc, a company that is primarily known for its range of GoPro filters among other action camera accessories, is taking its know-how to the smartphone sector. It has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter in order to fund final development and mass production of a new smartphone polarizer and a range of ND filters.

The filters are attached to the phone via a clip holder as it is often used with add-on lenses. The actual filter ring is then screwed onto the holder. Filters are stackable and according to the makers compatible with iPhone 4 and newer, including the dual-camera iPhone 7 Plus. They also work with Android phones, such as the Samsung S8 and S7 models, the Google Pixel or the LG G6. However, looking at the design there is no obvious reason why the clip would not work with most other phones as well.

Sandmarc calls its polarizer Drama Filter. The kit includes a filter, clip mount and a filter case. The set of ND filters has been christened Scape Filters. Apart from clip and case it includes 2-stop, 3-stop and 4-stop ND-filters. A pledge of $ 25 currently secures you the Drama Filter. For the Scape Filters you’ll have to invest $ 49. Delivery is planned for August 2017. More information including sample shots is available on the Sandmarc Kickstarter page.

Platypod Ultra compact camera support launches on Kickstarter with more features than Pro model

07 Jun

Platypod, the company behind the compact camera support of the same name, has launched a new product on Kickstarter called Platypod Ultra. This latest model is designed for mid-size and mirrorless cameras, unlike the larger Max model and original Pro model. Ultra is compatible with the majority of pro-tier tripod ball heads, according to Platypod, though the device itself is only about the size of a smartphone, making it ultra-compact.

Platypod Ultra is thicker (4.6mm vs 4.0mm) and 10% wider than the original Platypod Pro, making it sturdier, according to the company. The Ultra model comes with four spiked, threaded feet with rubber tips on one end, enabling the device to be used at a variety of angles on both rough and smooth surfaces. The Platypod Ultra also features five threaded holes for greater balancing and positioning options.

The company has also added three new openings to the Ultra plate so that it can be transported on bags using bungie cords or carabiners; there are also three countersunk holes for screwing the plate to a surface, such as a wood post. Finally, the plate also has two belt slots for strapping the tripod to irregularly shaped or vertical surfaces. The company is including a Velcro cinch strap with the kit.

The company is also launching a multi-accessory kit with accessories for both the Ultra and Max models. This kit includes a non-slip pad, 36-inch cinch strap, 3-inch spigot adapter, and a riser for certain tripod ball heads.

The Kickstarter campaign has exceeded its funding goal with more than two weeks remaining. The company is offering backers who pledge at least $ 49 a single Ultra unit, while a $ 69 pledge will also include the multi-accessory kit. Shipping to backers is estimated to start this upcoming July.

Nikon launches Arcrest protection filter line

03 Jun

In addition to the AF-S Nikkor 28mm F1.4E ED, 8-15mm F3.5-4.5E ED fisheye and AF-P 10-20mm F4.5-5.6G VR lenses Nikon also announced the new Arcrest line of ‘professional-grade’ protection filters. The Arcrest filters are available in 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, 82mm and 95mm diameters and, according to Nikon, can survive heavy impacts while only having a minimal impact on image quality.

The filters are 2mm thick and come with special coatings that minimize color balance disturbance, reduce ghosting and flares and repel water/oil/dirt. Nikon says they are also less prone to ghosting when shooting night scenes.

It appears that at least for now the Arcrest line will only be released in the Japanese market. Prices range from ¥9,680 ($ 88) for the 67mm filter to ¥25,799 ($ 234) for the largest diameter version. The product page on the Nikon Japan website offers a good selection of sample images and comparison shots against filters from competing brands.

User launches Change.org petition to save Nik software collection

02 Jun

Two days ago Google announced that it will stop providing updates for its Nik Collection suite of plug-in photo editing tools via a banner at the top of the Nik Collection site. Now a Nik user, Sascha Rheker from Germany, has launched a campaign on the Change.org petition site that aims to persuade Google to reverse its decision and continue to provide updates and add features to the Collection.

On the petition page Rheker writes: ‘Today, with no real competitor, photographers depend on the Nik Collection and would have been willing to pay, to be able to keep it. Especially for their important black & white work. A company like Google who claims to contribute to the preservation of mankind’s heritage by scanning millions of books, should also show some responsibility towards the photographic community, as photographs are a part of mankind’s cultural heritage.’

It seems unlikely the software giant from Mountain View will change its mind but the petition has already been signed by more than 1000 people. If you agree with Sascha you can add your name and signature on Change.org as well.
