Win a $1500 of Camera Gear with Loving Landscapes

24 Apr

NewImageLast week we announced a brand new dPS eBook – Loving Landscapes: a Guide to Landscape Photography Workflow and Post-Processing with the early bird discount of 33% off what will be its normal price.

We’re really pleased both with the eBook and how it helps readers improve their Landscape Photography Post Processing – but also the feedback it is already getting.

Here’s what one of our readers – Belinda said:

Thanks for this ebook. I downloaded it at 11pm last night moments after getting your email and was up until 3am reading it and practicing the techniques inside using Lightroom.

While it was a later night than expected I was amazed at the results on some of my old landscape shots that I’d not paid enough post processing attention to.

Win $ 1500 Worth of Camera Gear

Given the fantastic response to this eBook, we’re going to celebrate by giving you the chance to win $ 1500 of photographic gear and/or post processing software to help you improve your photography.

To further celebrate the launch of this new eBook we’re putting a $ 1,500 prize up for grabs.

One lucky owner of Loving Landscapes will be randomly drawn to win $ 1,500 USD to spend on either some new post-processing software (Lightroom/Photoshop etc) or some new camera gear (a lens, tripod, camera etc). You can choose what to spend the $ 1,500 on depending upon your needs.

Entries close midnight on the 9th of May EST, so make sure you have your copy ordered before then.

Note: If you ordered a copy last week then congrats, you’re already entered.

FAQ

Based upon previous competitions I know we’ll get a number of questions so here are some FAQs:

  • What if I already purchased Loving Landscapes? You’re in the draw and don’t need to do anything else.
  • Is this open to all international readers? Yes. We’ll ship the prizes to you anywhere at our cost. Our preference for the gear is to use B&H Photo and Video but if you live outside of their delivery area we’ll work with a local supplier to get your prize to you or arrange for you to get the $ 1500 so you can make the purchase at your chosen supplier.
  • Can I enter more than once? No, there is only one entry per person. Multiple purchases of the eBook only get you one entry.
  • Are there any conditions of entry? Yes, just one. The only condition of entry is that you allow us to publish your name on the blog when you’re drawn as a winner (we’ll keep any other details private). This way everyone will know who has won (we’ve previously had winners ask not to be named which has been difficult to be transparent about winner announcements).

Here’s the deal in a Nutshell

Buy Living Landscapes before Thursday 9th May and you get:

  • 33% off the eBook – worth $ 29.99, you get it for $ 19.99
  • An entry into the $ 1500 USD Prize Draw
  • Plus (and most importantly) you’ll come away from reading the eBook with some inspired landscape photography post processing skills!

We’ll draw and notify the winner on the 9th May and then publish their name here on the dPS blog. If the winner doesn’t respond within 7 days we’ll draw another winner and publish their name on the blog.

Weekly Photography Challenge Landscapes

05 Apr

Yesterday I shared a collection of stunning landscape images and asked a question at the end of the list. If you missed it, you can see the collection and my question here.

By Eric Bryan

If you haven’t figured out the three things that I think make all, or most of those images a cut above – let me help you out:

  1. The light – having the right light in landscape photography is crucial to creating an image that is better than good, it’s great. Light is everything and what landscape photographers drool over when they find the “good light” or they wait hours and hours, or sometimes even days to get it.
  2. Simplicity – look at many of the images in the collection again. See how some have very few elements in the image? More is less. Keep things simple and draw the viewers attention.
  3. Going the extra mile – getting off the main road and beaten track is another key to great landscape photography. Anyone can stop at the “viewpoints” along the highway and get the same shot. But if you really want to take it up a notch it’s being willing to hike into the back country and camp overnight just to get a shot of the sunrise in a remote location. Or even getting up for sunrise in the first place (see not on light above again). Are you willing to stand in the creek and get wet if it’s going to add more drama to your image, or climb a mountain, or freeze your butt off in the cold? Those are the things that the best landscape photographers do that most of us don’t and therefore they get the images we all wish we had.

Now it’s your turn! The weekly photography challenge is of course, landscape photography.

Here’s a few more example which exhibit some of those qualities:

Willing to risk life and limb on a rickety, questionable boat/raft on a river in China, in the pitch black darkness, to get this shot above. To read the story of the making of the image – click the image to go to Flickr.

Share your landscape masterpiece images!

Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section as pictured below) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them.

And don’t forget to share the story of your image as well. Did you do #3 above and go the extra mile? Tell us about it!

‘Building Absence’: Stephen Tourlentes’ prison landscapes

23 Mar

Rawlins_WY_State_Death_House_Prison_2000_.jpg

Stephen Tourlentes started photographing prisons after a facility was built in his home town, in Illinois, USA. In his series of images entitled ‘Building Absence’, Tourlentes captures prisons at night, in the distance, their lights illuminating the landscapes in which they exist. By his own estimation he has photographed more than 100 prisons in 46 states, often from dead-end public roads and from within the communities that border the huge facilities. Click through for a look at his work.

Window Sketches: Minimalist Landscapes of Steam & Glass

16 Mar

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

steam glass sketch photos

No smoke-and-mirrors or post-production here, just fleeting vignettes swiftly staged on steamed windows and set against natural outdoor backgrounds.

steam water walking alone

Jim Osborne is a self-taught landscape artist who typically works in watercolor, acrylic and oils. He describes himself as being inspired by his surroundings, light and the weather. Recently, however, he has begun working in a new direction with water condensation on glass window surfaces.

band of brothers art

His Steamy Windows Collection represents a bit of a departure for him in terms of tools and approach – the work is necessarily fast, drawing on organic backdrops, lighting conditions and perceptual cues. Each piece is shot quickly as well, and prints can be found for sale on his website.

With the need for speed, every little gesture counts – the results are simultaneously planned but ultimately uncontrolled, a mixture of simple figures and hasty grounds that somehow manages to look like more than the sum of its parts. The approach seems like a a great way to train oneself to think in an agile fashion and be nimble in execution.

Extreme Exposures: Light Landscapes Take Hours to Shoot

03 Mar

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

light art figure ground

Most light photographers focus on making a shape in the foreground in a matter of seconds, then setting it against a dark static backdrop – this artist often animates every inch of the frame.

light art flowing energy

light art room interior

Finnish artist Janne Parviainen of Helsinki takes these all-encompassing, long-exposure shots over many minutes (even hours at times), each line representing mere seconds along the way.

light art crouching portrait

light drawing laying down

As surreal as they look, there is no post-production involved. Aside from props and plans, even their creator cannot really see what he is making them until they are completed.

light drawing water monster

Parviainen was an oil painter previously, but pivoted when an accidental long-duration photo of streetlights, clicked on a nighttime walk, triggered a fascination with lighting. Now using light as paint, he employs a new series palettes and brushes. Glowsticks, light strings, strobes and flashlights help him animate everything from human figures to abandoned cars.

He begins tracing what is there and then adds his own haunting portraits and inventive twists to the scenes he sets. The results are so saturated with light that it is sometimes hard to tell what is really behind them and what he created from scratch along the way – what is foreground, background or sheer imagination.

31 Jan

McCullin.jpg

Many have seen Don McCullin’s haunting pictures of conflict, but few have heard his own thoughts on his acclaimed career. Created by photographer David Sims for the Dunhill ‘Voices’ campaign, for three minutes and twenty seconds we are taken into the mind of one this generation’s most iconic photographers. ‘The majority of the last 50 years of my life has been wasted photographing wars. What good have I done showing these pictures of suffering’, McCullin says. See video

Paintless Landscapes: Scenic Art Made of Light & Shadow

22 Dec

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

shadow art closeup two

A collection of unlikely (often discarded) objects coupled with a light source can create amazing city scenes, landscapes, portraits and more in the hands of this artist.

shadow art installation

Rashad Alakbarov hails from Azerbaijan and experiments with different materials and setups to turn three-dimensional trash into rich two-dimension displays of all shapes and sizes.

shadow art middle eastern

shadow art detail closeup

shadow art city scene

Some of these, including the top installation featured here, were on display last year at the Fly to Baku Contemporary Art Exhibition at the De Pury Gallery in London, UK.

shadow artist context setup

shadow art portrait sketch

A few pieces contain custom built-to-purpose shapes, like plastic versions of paper airplanes in the top example, while others simply draw on urban junk or everyday objects.

shadow art word wall

shadow art geometric design

There is something playful and informal about his approach. Alakbarov takes inspiration from items at hand to start crafting skylines or other scenes that unfold partly from his imagination, but also in part from the nature of the materials in each case.
