We’ve just posted an extra six pages to our Canon EOS 6D coverage including data and analysis from all our key tests. We’re working towards completing our review and wanted to publish this information as we know a lot of readers are interested in this camera. We’ve had the camera in the office for a couple of weeks and have used this time to expand our impressions of the camera. This will be the last update before the full review is published very soon.

Just Posted: Canon Powershot N first impressions

07 Jan

powershot-n.jpg

Canon’s Powershot N, with its ‘either way up’ design and Creative Shot processing filters, is one of the most unusual cameras we’ve seen for some time. Canon’s talking about it as a companion to a smartphone, and to this end it includes Wi-Fi connectivity and the ability to upload photos and videos to social media. We’ve had the chance to handle one briefly, and have prepared a quick first impressions article to give an idea of how it works.

No details of price or availability for the monstrous optic have yet been released, but Neal had the chance to use the as-yet-unavailable lens for two sessions at the Aquatics Center this week. Click through for Neal’s first impressions, and sample images including 100% crops.

Just posted: Nikon D800 first impressions and ‘real world’ samples

25 Mar

D800_intro_sm.jpg

We’ve just got hold of Nikon’s 36MP D800 full-frame DSLR and have been seeing what it’s like to shoot with. We’ve shot it alongside the D3S to see exactly what effect trebling the pixel count has. In addition we look at the handling, its video shooting controls and how it behaves with vintage lenses. To put our studio samples in context we’ve also included a 40-image real-world samples gallery and a look at the camera’s low-light performance. You may be surprised by the outcome.

First impressions shooting with the Olympus OM-D E-M5

22 Feb

Oly3.jpg

The European press event for the Olympus OM-D E-M5 gave us a chance to get some proper shooting time in with one of the most discussed cameras of 2012. Our preview already looks over the features and custom options but this trip gave us a chance to really use the camera. Andy Westlake hit the streets of Amsterdam with an E-M5, determined to find out how its features work in real-world use and looks at how well the Art Filters and processing options work.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm F1.8 first impressions and samples

23 Sep

Olympus 45mm F1.8 first impressions and preview samples. The recent spate of camera and lens announcements has given us the chance to use the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm F1.8. Given how long we’ve been asking manufacturers for a portrait lens in the 100mm-equivalent region, we pounced on this when it came into the office. As well as a preview samples gallery, we’ve also prepared some first impressions of shooting with the Micro Four Thirds ‘Family Portrait’ lens.

Nikon V1 and J1 – hands-on first impressions

22 Sep

We’ve had a little more time with the Nikon J1 and V1, and have prepared a first impressions article about the Nikon 1 system. We also spoke to Masahiro Suzuki, General Manager, R&D Department at Nikon’s development HQ, to better understand the company’s reasoning. The article includes an explanation of their high-speed shooting modes and addresses why the mode dial doesn’t say P,A,S or M.

Sony NEX firmware 03 first impressions

17 Oct

Sony’s announcement of revised firmware for the NEX mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras was easily missed amongst all of the excitement of Photokina 2010. Version 03 brings extensive revisions, including the ability to set the aperture when recording movies and the enabling of autofocus when using SAM and SSM Alpha-mount lenses via the adapter. But, perhaps most importantly, it addresses some of the major criticisms of the user interface made by reviewers and users alike. We’ve had a bit of a chance to use the latest firmware so thought we would publish our initial thoughts, ahead of revising the camera review. The review itself is in the process of being updated and will be re-published with updated scoring as soon as firmware 03 becomes publicly available.
