GoPro Max: a second-generation 360º action camera with HyperSmooth, 360 Audio and more

Alongside its new GoPro Hero8 Black action camera, GoPro unveiled the GoPro Max, a successor to its 360-degree GoPro Fusion camera.

Like the GoPro Fusion, the Max features two cameras on either side of its rounded cuboid design. This time, however, GoPro has added a dedicated LCD touchscreen on the ‘front’ of the device. Additionally, the GoPro Max is smaller than its predecessor and requires just a single microSD card rather than two.

On the imaging front, the GoPro Max can capture 16.6-megapixel still images (5760 x 2880 pixels) and capture full 360-degree video at up to 5K (4992 x 2496 pixels). Videos are recorded as MP4s via H.264/AVC. Like the Hero8 Black, the Max can livestream Full HD video.

GoPro has also brought some of its framing, hyperlapse and image stabilization technology to the Max in the form of Max HyperSmooth, Max TimeWarp, and ‘Digital Lenses.’ Like on the Hero8 Black, Max HyperSmooth keeps footage stable over bumpy terrain, TimeWarp allows for easy hyperlapse video and ‘Digital Lenses’ allows you to easily adjust the framing to capture the exact field of view you’re looking for.

Other new features include 360 Audio thanks to six built-in microphones, PowerPano for distortion-free 270-degree panoramic shots and Reframe, which allows you to capture video in 360-degree video and turn it into standard footage directly on your mobile device.

What’s interesting about the GoPro Max is its ability to effectively act as three cameras in one: a standard Hero action cam, a vlogging camera (thanks to the front-facing LCD display) and a 360-degree camera. GoPro hasn’t detailed the exact specs for shooting with the individual camera units as of publishing this article.

The GoPro Max, which measures 6.4 x 6.9 x 4.0 cm (2.5 x 2.7 x 1.6in) is waterproof down to 5m (16ft) and features a ruggedized design that shouldn’t have any problem handling bumps and drops. Onboard connections include a single Micro HDMI port and a USB-C connection that’s used to both transfer data and charge the device. A 1600mAh battery is included with the Max, which is slightly smaller than the battery found inside the GoPro Fusion.

The GoPro Hero Max is available to pre-order for $ 499.99. It’s expected to ship October 24th with in-store availability starting on the 25th.

GoPro is teasing its upcoming action cam, 360º camera set for an October 1st announcement

This screenshot from the teaser video appears to show off what we presume will be the GoPro HERO8 Black.

GoPro has posted a new teaser on its website showing off a few renderings and clips from what we believe to be its next-generation action cams.

Earlier this month we saw leaked product images, but this is the first official info we’ve seen regarding the impending launch. The announcement reads ‘This is Action’ and notes October 1, 2019, which we presume will be the official announcement. Below is the teaser in its entirety:

Two distinct devices appear to shown in the footage, as noted in the above screenshots, which echoes leaked information and images that in addition to a GoPro HERO8, GoPro will also reveal the GoPro Max, a second-generation 360º cameras that will be the successor to the GoPro Fusion.

A screenshot depicting what we assume, based on leaked images, will be the GoPro Fusion successor, the GoPro Max.

GoPro has also posted a video to YouTube where a livestream will take place for the announcement of what’s anticipated to be two new devices.

Report: The next GoPro will shoot 4K 120fps video, offer screen, light and mic accessories

Photo Rumors, citing sources based in China, is reporting a number of specs for the next generation of GoPro action cameras and has a set of purported images of the unreleased device.

According to Photo Rumors’ information, the action camera — expected to be called the GoPro Hero 8 — will be announced in September 2019.

The updated action camera is said to feature a new design with an optional housing that features cold-shoe mounts on the top and side for attaching accessories. Photo Rumors specifically mentions microphone, LED light and screen accessories. The leaked renderings show off the LED light and screen accessory, the latter of which appears to have a USB-C port on the side of it.

In terms of specs, Photo Rumors is reporting the action camera will be able to shoot 4K video at 120 fps and Full HD at 480 fps, all powered by a 12-megapixel sensor and GoPro-designed GP2 chipset. It’s also said the camera will feature an improved lens design for better image quality.

As with all rumors, the specifications should be taken with a grain of salt, but the renderings look identical to past product images from GoPro and the specifications do align with the incremental improvements GoPro has made over the years to its action camera lineup.

DJI hopes to take on GoPro with its new Osmo Action camera

DJI has taken a detour from drones and gimbals to release the Osmo Action, a robust action camera designed to compete directly with GoPro’s Hero lineup.

The compact, ruggedized action camera features the same 1/2.3-inch sensor found inside the Osmo Pocket and captures 12-megapixel Raw stills, as well as 4K HDR video. In front of the sensor is a three-element F2.8 glass lens with a 145 degree field-of-view.

As noted in our hands-on, the Osmo Action features DJI’s electronic image stabilization (EIS) technology it refers to as RockSteady, an tongue-in-cheek nod to GoPro’s HyperSmooth EIS technology. It’s worth noting though that DJI estimates an 18-22% crop factor when using RockSteady. DJI has also included a de-warp function to minimize the exaggerated perspective of the wide-angle lens.

One, er two, of the stand-out features of the Osmo Action are its dual displays. In addition to the 2.25in rear touchscreen that’s used to navigate the menu and compose shots, DJI has also added a 1.4in front-facing screen so you know what you’re getting in the shot when snapping a selfie.

Being an action camera, it shouldn’t come as any surprise the Osmo Action is designed to take a beating and keep on working; it’s dustproof, shockproof up to 1.5m (5ft) and waterproof down to 11m (36ft) as is. If more protection or underwater capabilities are required, DJI is also offering an external housing.

The device itself features three buttons: a power button, a record button and a dedicated button DJI calls the Quick Switch (QS) button. The QS button makes it easy to transition between shooting modes, flip what screen is active and change settings, even with gloves on. If the Quick Switch button doesn’t fit the bill, the camera can also be turned on and start recording with your voice thanks to integrated voice control.

On the photo front, the Osmo Action can capture 12MP Raw (DNG) or JPEG images in 16:9 or 4:3 ratios. It features an ISO sensitivity range of 100-3200 and shutter speeds between 120 seconds and 1/8000th of a second. In burst mode, the Osmo Action can capture shots at three, five or seven fps, and the self-timer mode can be set for three or ten second intervals.

When it comes to video, the Osmo Action can capture 4K/60p video at 100Mbps and 4K HDR video at up to 30 fps. For high frame rate video, the Osmo Action can capture up to 240 fps if the resolution is dropped down to 1080p.

The Osmo Action has built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi so it can be paired with Android and iOS devices via DJI’s Mimo mobile app. When connected, you can compose shots, change settings, capture images and instantly transfer content on the fly.

Media is stored on microSD/SDXC/SDHC cards up to 256GB. The battery, which DJI says can be fully charged via the onboard USB-C port in 88 minutes, can last 116 minutes when recording at 1080/30p or 91 minutes when recording 4K/30p with RockSteady enabled.

The DJI Osmo Action is currently available to pre-order at Adorama and B&H for $ 349. It comes with a camera frame, a flat adhesive mount, a curved adhesive mount, a quick-release base, the battery, a battery case, a locking screen and a USB-C cable. Additional accessories are also available.

Specs

GoPro released three new action cameras in September 2018: the Hero 7 Black, White, and Silver. The Hero 7 Black is their most premium model at US$ 399, with the other two being stripped down versions. GoPro’s mid-tier camera is the Hero 7 Silver. Priced at US$ 299, the Silver has most of the features of the Hero 7 Black minus Hypersmooth; it’s also capped at taking 10-megapixel photos compared to the Hero 7 Black’s 12 megapixels. GoPro’s new entry-level camera is the Hero 7 White. At US$ 199, you get the same 10-megapixel sensor as the Hero 7 Silver. Most features are retained except for the ability to shoot in 4K video.

Besides the price difference, the Hero 7 Black is also the only model to receive three new key features: HyperSmooth, live streaming, and TimeWarp video. More on all of these features below.

Look and feel

The Hero 7 Black retains the same rubberized design that was first introduced with the Hero 5 Black. Side-by-side, it looks almost identical to the Hero 6 Black. Both cameras have the same 2-inch touchscreen, button placement, and the same ports (USB-C and micro HDMI). They even use the same replaceable batteries.

Before you gripe about GoPro retaining the same camera design, consider this: reusing old designs means you can keep using the same GoPro accessories. This is key as GoPro, and many third-party manufacturers such as Joby have created some truly helpful accessories to get more use out of the camera. So if you have mounts, cages, or adapters for the Hero 5 or 6, rest assured that you can use them all with the Hero 7 Black as well.

5 things I love about the GoPro Hero 7 Black

1. Hypersmooth

Hands down the best feature about the GoPro Hero 7 Black is Hypersmooth. GoPro claims it is the very best in-camera video stabilization on the market, adding gimbal-like stabilization to video footage. After profuse testing, it’s hard to argue. Shooting with Hypersmooth enabled does indeed produce ultra-smooth footage akin to what you would get if you used a gimbal. In turn, this seems to kill the GoPro Karma Grip gimbal as it seems the Hero 7 Black can record video just fine without it.

You can shoot in Hypersmooth even when shooting at 4K 60fps at full resolution. Just be mindful that Hypersmooth can’t be enabled when shooting in 4:3 aspect ratio, and also when shooting in Full HD at 240fps and 120fps.

2. TimeWarp

Also new on the Hero 7 Black is a feature called TimeWarp. In a nutshell, this is timelapse video with HyperSmooth applied. The resulting effect is being able to capture timelapse videos that are ultra stable. This is key for time-lapsing anything with movement, such as driving, hiking, walking, running, or biking. When using TimeWarp, you have the option to record at several different speeds including 2x, 5x, 10x, 15x, and 30x.

3. Same form factor as Hero 5 and 6

On the outside, GoPro made almost no change to the Hero 7. It looks exactly the same as the Hero 5 and 6, and even uses the same batteries. This is actually a good thing. If you’ve invested in GoPro cages or batteries before, you can reuse them with the Hero 7. Also, many third-party companies have created accessories for the Hero 5 and 6. You can use these just fine with the Hero 7.

One design change I’d love to see in future GoPros: a camera that comes with its own mount and doesn’t need to be put in a cage.

4. Touchscreen with revamped UI

While GoPros have had touchscreens for several models now, the user interface has been revamped in the Hero 7 Black. Key information such as resolution and framerate are condensed at the bottom of the screen, while battery life and remaining memory card space are in the upper portion of the screen. Portrait mode has also been added, allowing you to shoot vertical photos and videos for platforms such as Instagram Stories or IGTV.

Speaking of social media, the Hero 7 Black now allows for live streaming. Using WiFi or cellular service, you can conduct a 720p live stream on Facebook. At this time, live streaming to other platforms (ie. YouTube) isn’t yet enabled.

5. Seamless smartphone integration

One of my biggest gripes about modern cameras is how terribly unreliable their smartphone integrations are. While most cameras offer Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity for remote control via smartphones and easily transferring images, it’s always hit or miss whether or not these features will work. With the GoPro, connectivity is the most responsive and reliable I’ve ever seen on a camera. This makes it very easy to use your smartphone to control the GoPro and review photos and videos immediately after capture. Well done, GoPro.

5 things I dislike about the GoPro Hero 7 Black

For all of the things that GoPro improved in the Hero 7 Black, there is still room for improvement. Here are 5 features in particular that I would like to see refined and improved in future generations.

1. Unresponsive screen

While the Hero 7 Black’s touchscreen is largely improved, it has one major shortcoming: it’s not very responsive! This problem also extends to GoPro’s other two buttons. In general, it’s hit or miss whether the GoPro will react to buttons being pushed or the touchscreen being swiped. This can be very frustrating, especially when trying to shoot spontaneously.

2. Voice commands are unreliable

Another feature that is hit or miss is voice control. New on the Hero 7 Black are two voice commands that can control the GoPro: “GoPro capture,” and “GoPro Stop capture.” While useful in theory, these voice controls seem to work about half of the time.

3. No mic jack

In the past, GoPro was notorious for having awful built-in microphones. All of that changed with the Hero 7 Black, which offers remarkably improved in-camera sound. However, there are still instances that require enhanced sound capture via a lavalier (lapel) microphone or shotgun mic. Unfortunately, GoPro has withheld the mic jack from the Hero 7 Black, opting instead to give us USB-C and micro HDMI ports. GoPro does offer a solution in the form of a mic jack adapter. However, it is bulky and expensive, and you must use GoPro’s adapter (other brands will not work).

4. Battery life

Of all the things GoPro improved in the Hero 7 Black, one thing that remains unchanged is battery life. It’s hard to give an estimated battery life as it depends on how you are using the camera. But in general, one battery lasts about an hour when shooting in 4K. Luckily, all three Hero 7 models come with a USB-C port to allow for charging via a wall socket or external battery. However, it is still a wise idea to carry several spare batteries with you.

5. Low light performance

All three Hero 7 models have an f/2.8 aperture. This means they are decent at shooting in low light, but the video and photo quality still leaves room for improvement. In the case of the Hero 7 Black, it also seems that HyperSmooth is automatically disabled in low light conditions, further worsening the low light performance. In general, you’ll get the best photo and video performance out of your Hero 7 if you use it in daylight or good lighting conditions.

In Conclusion

Despite some shortcomings, the GoPro Hero 7 Black is easily the best action camera on the market right now. GoPro made significant and actually useful improvements on this camera and it is worth using not only for action scenarios but everyday use as well. Agree or disagree? GoPro Plus now offers unlimited cloud storage and increased accessory discounts

GoPro has given a boost to its Plus subscription service. From now on the service offers unlimited cloud storage space for photos and videos to its subscribers. Previously users could upload unlimited photos but there was a 35-hour limit for video footage.

The service is specifically useful for users of WiFi-enabled GoPro cameras, such as the Hero5, Hero6 and Hero7 models, who can now automatically upload all captured footage to the cloud, without the need for any manual data transfer to a computer or other device first.

In addition to the lifted storage limit, the discount on GoPro accessories has also been increased for Plus subscribers. It is now 50% off most mounts and other accessories, compared to 20% previously. What hasn’t changed is the monthly subscription rate at $ 5 which makes the service a pretty enticing option for GoPro power users. There’s also a 30 day free trial period for the service if you’re interested in trying it out first.

GoPro Fusion beta firmware brings resolution bump and 24fps recording

GoPro has announced a major beta firmware update for its Fusion 360-degree camera. With the new firmware the camera gets a resolution bump from 5.2 to 5.8 video (5.6K when stitched) and the new resolution also supports 24fps frame rates, making it easier to incorporate the Fusion into TV and film production processes.

In addition the gets a new 5.6K/24fps time lapse video mode and RAW photo support for night and time lapse modes with intervals of 5 seconds or longer.

The Fusion Studio and Adobe Premiere and After Effects plug-ins have been revamped as well. Fusion Studio v1.4 gets 5.6K exports for the new higher resolution 24fps mode and a range of updated controls and options. GoPro’s VR plug-ins have been updated for use with Adobe Premiere CC 2019 and Adobe After Effects CC 2019.

GoPro moving production of U.S.-bound action cameras out of China, cites concerns over tariffs

GoPro announced today it will be moving camera production out of China for cameras destined for the U.S. market.

In a press release shared this morning, GoPro stated that while its cameras bound for the international market will continue to be made in China, gear destined for the United States will be moved elsewhere by summer 2019, citing concern over the recent tariffs put in place as a part of the trade war that’s been brewing between the U.S. and China.

‘Today’s geopolitical business environment requires agility, and we’re proactively addressing tariff concerns by moving most of our US-bound camera production out of China,’ says Brian McGee, executive vice president and CFO of GoPro in the press release. ‘We believe this diversified approach to production can benefit our business regardless of tariff implications.’

McGee assured consumers and investors alike the move will have little impact on GoPro’s financials, saying ‘It’s important to note that we own our own production equipment while our manufacturing partner provides the facilities, so we expect to make this move at a relatively low cost.’

As of writing this article at 10:10am on Monday, December 10th, 2018, GoPro is priced at $ 4.82 USD per share, down 2.82% on the day on the NASDAQ stock exchange.

5 Tips for Underwater Photography with a GoPro

Jumping from a cliff. Diving with whale sharks. Documenting a road trip. The compact, rugged technology of the GoPro has created incredible opportunities for capturing the action of events like these. And while the GoPro is known mostly for its video capabilities, improved senor technology means it’s also a camera capable of high-quality imagery that can withstand harsh conditions such as water and dust.

And being able to shoot in adverse conditions opens new opportunities for creative photography.

In the past few months I’ve been experimenting with a GoPro Hero5 to shoot underwater photography. Although shooting underwater is a new realm for me, I’ve found that by applying generic photography knowledge I’ve grown quickly and made the GoPro work for me.

I hope you can learn and adapt what I’ve learned for your own purposes with these five tips for underwater photography with a GoPro.

1. Know the Minimum Focus Distance

You may already know that the GoPro has a very wide field of view (FOV), which lets you frame a subject with the contextual scene around it. When searching for an image, focus on your desired foreground element and then get as close to it that foreground element as you ethically can. Place your camera close and take advantage of the GoPro’s 12-inch (~30cm) minimum focus distance. Placing the foreground element about 12 inches from the camera will emphasize it while still providing surrounding context.

2. Pre-set your Camera Field of View

Following in line with the minimum focusing distance, be sure to pre-set the FOV for your GoPro before entering the water. Even though GoPros are waterproof, I use a third-party housing to further protect the camera. And if you use a housing you can’t engage the touch screen, so you need to set the FOV first.

If you can’t get close enough to your subject, set the field of view to “Narrow”. This will require you to aim your camera precisely, which can be difficult if snorkeling or swimming. Of course, you can keep an eye on the back screen to help you compose the shot.

3. Set Your Camera Defaults to Maintain Image Quality

Setting your default settings ahead of time will help you capture quality photographs. GoPros have pretty good image quality in well-lit conditions, but the image graininess (noise) will increase quickly as the camera adapts its ISO to low-light conditions. You can control the image quality by setting a maximum ISO setting. With your phone connected to your GoPro, go into your settings and change the maximum ISO to a value of 800 or less. While you’re there, you may want to set the default mode to “photo”. Doing this will ensure you can quickly take a photo if your GoPro shuts off while underwater and you need to turn it back on.

Underwater conditions can be very murky and may cause your camera to boost the ISO, which will result in greater image noise.

4. Stabilize Your Camera

If the water is cloudy or the day isn’t sunny the camera will shoot at slower shutter speeds, which may result in blurry or non-sharp images. This will be particularly noticeable if you can’t keep the camera  stable. If you’re hand-holding the camera, keep it as stable as possible. You can also mount the GoPro to a tripod and place it in a suitable location. This is more useful when a phenomena or animal is predictable, such as salmon in a river. Just as it does on land, using a tripod will help stabilize the image.

If you’re out of the water and photographing something near you (think of tide pools) you can keep the camera stable by mounting it on a extension pole. You can buy one, or even build one relatively easily. A long pole will help you photograph something far away, and if you have a long pole (say 12 feet) the top of it will help counterbalance the GoPro at the bottom. If you’re using the pole in shallow water try bracing it against the bottom for further stability.

This image combines a couple of the concepts discussed in this article. I kept the camera on a pole and maintained the minimum focusing distance to capture the image of this octopus in a tide pool.

I used a pole and a GoPro to photograph these colorful tube worms and anemones under a dock.

Another camera setting useful for stability is the time lapse mode. Set the camera to time lapse (say, one shot every second) and start taking images. Compose your shot underwater, and then hold the camera in place while it takes pictures. Since you won’t have to fumble for the trigger button it will be easier to keep it still and ensure your images are sharp.

In some situations you may be able to trigger the camera with your phone. The GoPro’s wifi network will cut out under deep water, but if the camera is on a tripod with only a small covering of water you can trigger the camera remotely from a distance. You’ll need to experiment with how much water is too much for the wifi network. Remotely triggering the camera may help you ethically and safely photograph wildlife.

Although I don’t use underwater lighting, you can avoid blurring by using strobes or other versions of underwater lighting. These will help keep your shutter speed up and your ISO low. But use them with discretion depending on your subject. In some circumstances they may be detrimental to wildlife.

5. Use a Housing for Split-Level Photography

Split-level imagery is a way to help give an image context and tell a story. To create the effect, use an underwater housing with a convex dome and then place the dome half-in and half-out of the water. By doing so you get to observe both the underwater world and the terrestrial world. I use a housing by GoPole to create split-level images capturing the streams and local salmon runs of Alaska. You can use this technique anywhere to create compelling images. You can create split-level images by hand-holding the camera or using a tripod as I mentioned earlier.

The Takeaway

I want to reiterate that I’m not an expert at underwater photography. But I’ve enjoyed extending my capabilities and skills to that realm. The GoPro is a fun way to learn underwater photography techniques without breaking the bank. And since GoPros are naturally waterproof, the likelihood of destroying gear is lowered substantially.

As I like to say, “pixels are cheap,” so I hope you make a lot of pixels while shooting photographs underwater with your GoPro.

GoPro launches new HERO7 Black, Silver, and White models with HyperSmooth stabilization

GoPro has announced its new collection of HERO7 action cameras, which includes three individual devices: the Hero7 Black, HERO7 Silver and HERO7 White. The three models are set to go on sale next week for $ 399, $ 299 and $ 199, respectively.

If it’s a dramatic redesign you’re looking for with this new generation of GoPro action cams, this isn’t the upgrade for you. On the outside, all three models look almost identical to their respective HERO6 counterparts. The only notable differences are new paint jobs for the HERO6 Silver and HERO6 White to match their respective namesakes and a new logo on the lens-side of the action cams denoting what model you have.

HERO7 Black

The GoPro Hero7 Black is the flagship model in the collection. As with on the outside,, not much has changed inside the camera. GoPro says the Hero7 Black has the same internal components as the HERO6 Black, but notes the custom-built GP1 chip inside has been reworked and an extra bump of RAM has been added (although GoPro doesn’t disclose how much RAM has been added).

The Hero7 Black shoots 4K at 60 frames per second, 2.7K at up to 120 FPS, and 1080p up to 240 FPS. It captures 12-megapixel still images and has built-in RAW and a ‘SuperPhoto’ HDR mode. It also has Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity for geolocation and wireless networking.

The big change this year comes from the software and processing side of things. New this year is an improved stabilization mode GoPro calls HyperSmooth. In GoPro’s own words, ‘HyperSmooth is the best in-camera video stabilization ever featured in a camera. It makes it easy to capture professional-looking, gimbal-like stabilized video without the expense or hassle of a motorized gimbal.’ HyperSmooth even works underwater and in rough, windy environments.

If GoPro’s verbiage sounds like hyperbole, you can check out their claims in the demo video below. A single video montage isn’t much to go off of in terms of real-world use, but from what’s shown, it looks impressive.

There’s also a built-in hyperlapse mode GoPro calls TimeWarp. This feature smooths out timelapse footage to give what GoPro calls a ‘magic carpet ride’ aesthetic. Another new feature is the ability to livestream to online services like YouTube, Twitch, Vimeo and Facebook when connected to a smartphone’s cellular connection.

HERO7 Silver

Externally, the HERO7 Silver looks similar to the Hero7 Black, with the exception of the silver paint job (it’s really more of a gunmetal grey) and the absence of the front-facing settings display.

Internally, the HERO7 Silver appears to be a revamp of the HERO6 Black. It captures 4K video, but only at 30 FPS, and 10-megapixel stills instead of the 12-megapixels of the Hero7 Black. Slow-motion video is also capped at 2x instead of 8x.

Feature wise, the HERO7 Silver lacks the HyperSmooth stabilization, live-streaming and instead of high dynamic range (HDR) images, it only captures wide dynamic range (WDR) images. It still offers the ruggedized, waterproof design, voice control, Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity.

HERO7 White

On the budget-end of things, the HERO7 White keeps it simple. It shoots 10-megapixel stills and 1080p video at 60 FPS — no 4K capture. It lacks the wide dynamic range (WDR) capture mode and also loses the GPS connectivity of its more powerful counterparts.

Pricing and pre-orders

The HERO7 Black, HERO7 Silver and HERO7 White are available for pre-order starting today for $ 399, $ 299 and $ 199, respectively. They are expected to be available at various retailers starting September 30, 2018.
