Audio Hop: Best NYC Art Gallery Tour You Have Ever Heard

20 Aug

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

nyc gallery audio tour

A new way to experience galleries, their artwork and the city they inhabit, even calling it a tour sells short this extremely impressive multimedia experience. Complete with props and layered audio recordings, all interspersed with civic trivia and high-speed humor, the whole Audio Hop production feels like an well-executed piece of dynamic performance art, in which you can play any number of parts. Launching next month, this hop is well worth a stop, a look and a listen.

David Behringer, the curator of this experience, is exuberant, knowledgeable and very dedicated, visiting over 250 galleries in Chelsea each month to find the five most worthy ones to show any given group (and rotating with each tour). From start to finish, his personality and enthusiasm make it work. For an simple sample, check out his video recap below showing ten of his favorite exhibits from 2013 – then click here to buy tickets for the program starting next month.

Unlike a traditional audio walking tour, this one features both live and prerecorded sound, all delivered wirelessly to an inconspicuous device, letting its guests meander through the galleries but also break away from the group. The clips include carefully curated and edited interviews with artists and other soundbites related to a given work or its context. “A hidden radio transmitter allows you to hear your guide from any distance (in total secret) AND listen to insightful audio clips of the artists themselves while you’re in the gallery.”

Effectively, you and your fellow half-dozen tour-takers feel both empowered to enter galleries that might seem open or feel welcoming you but also liberated from the the feeling of being tied to a traditional clustered bunch of gawking tourists. You can fall behind and linger, or stride ahead to the next stop, all while absorbing auditory input in the background.

30 out of 30 reviewers on TripAdvisor rated David’s private tours as ‘Excellent’, effectively a unanimous a 5-star recommendation. WebUrbanist’s own Executive Editor had the opportunity to a sneak peak at his new and more-public offering this summer and was beyond impressed – what were individual tours are morphing into something suddenly more accessible.

If it was not already clear: we would strongly recommend taking a trip with David to anyone who wants to get a glimpse of the art world … or simply wishes to take a artfully curated walk through New York City, learning about the neighborhood, its architecture and artwork alike. Even if you are not in the area, you can still check out the blog to learn about fantastic new works.

HTC Gallery update allows for sharing of Duo Cam images

08 Aug

We weren’t wowed by the HTC One M8’s Duo Cam features in our review of the device, partly because its corresponding re-focusing effects could only be used on the phone itself. HTC has changed that with a Gallery App update, allowing users to share the experience with others through a web interface. Read more

Canon EF-S 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 sample gallery

29 Jul

We’ve been out taking advantage of Seattle’s sunny July days and have just published a gallery of real-world samples from Canon’s new 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 IS STM lens. Smaller, lighter and cheaper than the 10-22mm zoom that precedes it in Canon’s lineup, the 10-18mm gives a 16-29mm equivalent range on the APS-C bodies it’s designed for. See gallery

It does not have to be restricted to cameras; you can think outside of the box as much as you like. It can be an accessory, a piece of software, a tablet, computer or electronic equipment, a book or even an app just to name a few suggestions.  Feel free to be as creative as you like in the photo – you may even want to appear in the photo if you are comfortable being seen in it. Cecilia Gallery Camera Straps Review

03 Jul

Fashion Photography Blog Reviews Cecilia Gallery Camera Straps (FashionPhotographyBlog.com)When FashionPhotographyBlog.com was approached by Cecilia Gallery to review their camera straps I was excited. I had seen their products on their website and on first impressions I thought they looked really trendy and exuded quality… a perfectly stylish camera accessory. I have always been intrigued about ancient civilizations, particularly the Incas, so when I saw their hand-woven Peruvian designs I was in a happy place.

Fashion Photography Blog Reviews Cecilia Gallery Camera Straps (FashionPhotographyBlog.com)

If you haven’t heard of Cecilia Gallery before, the story of the online store began in Cusco, Peru in 2011. During the filming of a documentary, Michael Fleisch purchased a woolen belt made of alpaca wool from a peddler on the street. With a belt and scrap leather in hand he presented these items to a cobbler and requested that they be fashioned into something that resembled his strap for his Canon camera. The result was the basis of a unique product that he and his friend, MacLean Fisher could create a potential business together, that lead them to León, Mexico where they worked with the skilled leather artisans there.  Two years later in 2013, Celia Gallery was formed.

Cecilia Gallery stocks a range of designs of their camera straps, all made with real Argentinian cowhide leather tanned in different shades, to suit any camera color, whether for DSLRs or vintage camera models. The straps are strong yet soft under the fingers, while the textile design has been interwoven using genuine baby alpaca wool and come in a range of patterns and solid colors as seen on their website.

As some of you are aware, I have been known to be an avid traveler, and generally, a busy person always on the move. When I am hopping across country to country and sprinting across town for my next appointment I ideally want all my equipment to be lightweight, but can also handle some rugged wear. It has to be comfortable to wear around my neck or over my shoulder for long periods of time (many hours). It also has to feel good, look good and actually be functional with my avid schedule, which is why I was keen to give Cecilia Gallery’s camera straps a try.

Fashion Photography Blog Reviews Cecilia Gallery Camera Straps (FashionPhotographyBlog.com)

When I opened the package, to inspect the contents, I was not disappointed. The camera straps look even better than the pictures. On close inspection I can see the intricacies of the detailed pattern of the Challaypu (representing mountains) and Q’enqo (representing rivers) designs and stitching between the leather backing and nylon reinforcements, as well as the incredible softness of the leather front.

Fashion Photography Blog Reviews Cecilia Gallery Camera Straps (FashionPhotographyBlog.com)

The price range for these products range between the $ 90-100 mark, which is the price of quality and reliability, when you are looking for a camera strap that will provide a return on investment and be able to last in the long run, due to its attention to its workmanship (as explained on the information card that comes with the product). The straps can handle the weight of my camera, and has adjustable lengths.

Fashion Photography Blog Reviews Cecilia Gallery Camera Straps (FashionPhotographyBlog.com)

So what kind of photographer would these camera straps suit? The connoisseur of fine accessories, the eclectic and the trendsetter are what comes to mind, someone who is looking to spice up their camera with a unique camera strap that is not only aesthetic to the eye, but also durable and practicality.

Stay tuned to FashionPhotographyBlog.com because we will be announcing how one of our lucky readers can win one of these gorgeous camera straps from Cecilia Gallery really soon!

As Lytro prepares for the launch of its second generation light field camera, the Lytro Illum, the company faces a challenge: how does one easily display and share the ‘living pictures’ their cameras produce? Today the company announced plans to open-source its Living Picture Player – a viewer for its light field images. The WebGL-based player can be integrated into any website or social media platform, thereby allowing for easy sharing of Lytro’s living pictures. 500px will be the first to host an image gallery based on this player.
