Fujifilm GFX 100 offers 100 Megapixels, phase-detect AF and 4K video for $10,000

We’ve known about the Fujifilm GFX 100 since it was shown at Photokina last fall, and in about a month, you can get one of your own.

The GFX 100 features a medium-format (44 x 33mm) BSI-CMOS sensor with 102 million effective pixels. The camera is powered by a quad-core X-Processor 4 and offers a native ISO range of 100-12,800 (which expands to 50-102,400) and support for 16-bit Raw files. In-body 5-axis image stabilization reduces shake by up to 5.5 stops according to Fujifilm, and the entire sensor is mounted on springs to reduce shutter shock.

If the GFX 100 uses the Sony IMX 461 sensor, which we strongly suspect it does, we expect significantly improved low light and high ISO performance thanks to the sensor’s dual gain architecture.

The DSLR-styled body is incredibly well-built, with the durability you’d expect from a high-end camera. About the same size as a professional DSLR, the GFX 100 weighs in at 1.4kg (3.1lbs). The camera has a built-in grip for portrait shooting that can hold one or two NP-T125 batteries, for up to 800 shots per charge. The camera has twin SD card slots with UHS-II support, along with ports for USB 3.2 (Type-C), an external mic and headphones, a wired remote, and HDMI.

The GFX 100 has a dual-hinged, 3.2″ touchscreen LCD with 2.36 million dots that can tilt in both landscape and portrait orientations, just like on the GFX 50S. The camera comes bundled with a removable, tilting OLED EVF that has a whopping 5.76M dots. There are also a pair of OLED displays – one on the top, another below the LCD – that display various camera settings, battery life and shots remaining.

Fujifilm has put a hybrid autofocus system on the GFX 100, with 3.76 million phase-detect pixels spread across nearly 100% of the frame. The company claims that AF speeds are 210% faster than on the contrast-detect-only GFX 50R, and our early experience suggests that autofocus is indeed vastly improved.

The last of the major features on the GFX 100 is its video capabilities. It can capture DCI and UHD 4K video at bit rates up to 400Mbps, with your choice of H.265 or H.264 codecs. It supports Fujifilm’s Eterna Film Simulation mode and can output 10-bit 4:2:2 F-Log video to an external recorder.

The GFX 100 will be available at the end of June for $ 9999.95.

Fujifilm GFX 100 pre-production sample gallery

We recently had the opportunity to shoot in Florence, Italy with a pre-production sample of the Fujifilm GFX 100. This powerful medium-format camera improves over the GFX 50S and 50R with a new 100MP sensor, in-body stabilization system and 4K video.

We’ll be adding more real-world photographs and test samples as soon as we get hold of a reviewable GFX 100, but for now, our gallery of JPEGs should give you some idea of its capabilities.

Birth of the Renaissance: Shooting with the Fujifilm GFX 100 in Florence, Italy

It’s exceedingly rare that I get to feel cool, especially at work. But every now and then an opportunity arises to do something, go somewhere or see something that makes me pinch myself. Just such an opportunity came up recently, when I spent a week shooting with a pre-production sample of Fujifilm’s new GFX 100 in Florence, Italy – the birthplace of the Renaissance.

I’ve been fascinated by the GFX 100 since we got a sneak peek of the camera still under development, earlier this year. And 18 year-old me loved the few days I spent in Florence in 2000, the summer before I went off to waste British taxpayers’ money for four years at university. Nineteen years on, could I recreate the sights and sounds of that heady teenage summer? Unlikely. And probably for the best. But at least this time I wouldn’t have to carry around a bag full of 35mm film.

The camera I was shooting with in Italy would have blown my teenage brain (admittedly not a difficult thing to do). Officially a beta test sample, Fujifilm handed over a pre-production GFX 100, running non-final firmware.

During shooting I did indeed experience occasional glitches, and some aspects of the camera’s performance and operation were very obviously unfinished. As such, this is not going to be a detailed, review-style write up of my experience. It can’t be. So given all of these caveats, what can I actually say about the camera?

Well: It sure does smell nice! Congratulations – you just read the shortest ever shooting experience article on DPReview.

Proud parents rejoice: Finally, a 100MP medium format camera that’s fast and responsive enough for quick grab shots of a toddler. With face and eye-detection and PDAF, the GFX 100 is a powerful portrait camera in autofocus mode.

If you’re still reading this, you either figured out I was joking, or you’re predisposed not to believe what you read on the Internet. Either way, thanks for sticking around.

There’s actually quite a lot I can say about shooting with the GFX 100, predictable pre-production bugs and glitches notwithstanding. Ironically, perhaps my biggest takeaway from using it for a week was just how finished this supposedly unfinished camera felt. In almost all important respects, the prototype GFX 100 camera I was using just worked. It worked so well in fact, and so intuitively, that within a few hours I wasn’t paralyzed by worry over the enormous responsibility of chaperoning a hand-built, embargoed, prototype camera around a foreign country. I was just enjoying the experience of shooting with it. And the pizza. I really enjoyed the pizza.

With its EVF attached, the GFX 100 actually has almost exactly the same ‘footprint’ as a Nikon D5

Compared to the GFX 50S and 50R, the GFX 100 offers a handling and shooting experience that is largely familiar, but in some ways quite different. The most obvious difference is that it’s a lot bigger than either camera. The integrated vertical grip accepts two batteries, and increases the size of the body to roughly that of a professional DSLR. With its EVF attached, the GFX 100 actually has almost exactly the same ‘footprint’ and weighs about the same as a Nikon D5, although of course its mass is distributed within a slightly different form factor. With the EVF removed, the GFX 100 is actually much easier to pack into a bag or hard case than a D5 or Canon EOS-1D X II, since it basically becomes a square slab.

The GFX 100’s EVF is removable, at which point the camera becomes much easier to pack into a bag or case for storage.

The second major difference compared to earlier GFX models is that Fujifilm has ditched the consciously retro styling of the older cameras in favor of a somewhat more severe, push button and dial-driven interface of the kind pioneered back in the 80s by Canon in the T90 and EOS-1 series SLRs.

Much as I respect Fujifilm’s tendency to put big chunky dials on many of their cameras from an aesthetic point of view, I don’t tend to use them in practice. Come to think of it, I haven’t used a shutter speed dial on a multi-mode camera since the Nikon F4. Since these days I tend to shoot using automatic ISO, that dial stays locked to ‘A’, too. I appreciate a physical dial for exposure compensation, but I can live without it.

As such, I have no problem with the GFX 100’s more button-driven interface, and in fact in a camera like this I tend to prefer it. When it comes to preventing accidental setting changes, it’s much harder to unintentionally press a button and simultaneously scroll a command dial than it is to knock a dedicated dial out of position against your hip, or when moving the camera in and out of a bag.

A lot of people seem unkeen on how the GFX 100 looks but I actually quite like it. Yes, it resembles an overgrown games console from the early 90s, and the blueish gray finish is very different to any other camera on the market, but it works, and hell, at least it’s different.

The rear screen is partially articulated, which is nice. But the ‘Q’ buttons on the two handgrips are very prone to be accidentally bumped. Here you can also see the lack of rubber coating on the vertical grip.

There are only three aspects of the GFX 100’s handling and operation which I feel could use some work. For starters, the exposure compensation buttons (one on the top plate, one on the vertical grip) are ergonomically different to one another, and both proved rather hard to locate when my eye was to the camera’s EVF. I fully expect that in final shipping cameras, it will be possible to repurpose the rear command dial for ‘quick exposure compensation’ in AE modes, and on that assumption, the exposure comp. button issue isn’t a show-stopper.

Harder to work around is the Q button – especially the one on the vertical grip – which I managed to constantly press by accident when I was handling the camera in preparation to bring it up to my eye. This is pretty much the same issue that has been widely reported with the X-T30, and to Fujifilm’s credit, a firmware update was swiftly issued to address the problem. My final gripe is a fairly minor one – I do wish that the vertical grip was a bit more contoured, and in contrast to the pleasantly textured rubber on the main grip, the bare metal can get a bit slippery after extended handling.

In pretty much every other respect the GFX 100 works very well. If you’ve used the X-T3 or one of its various stablemates, you’ll feel right at home. Even if you’re coming from a DSLR or mirrorless ILC from another manufacturer, the learning curve should be pretty shallow.

That’s the externals dealt with, but the real appeal of the GFX 100 lies less in what it looks like, and more in what it can do. And oh boy, it can do a lot. I’ve shot with the GFX 50S quite a bit, and I really enjoy using it, but even if I was a working commercial photographer I would probably never buy one. Files from the 50S are great, but they’re not technically better than the output of the best full-frame DSLRs and mirrorless ILCs. Meanwhile, the 50S’s autofocus performance and viewfinder experience – while usable – compare poorly to competitive full-frame and APS-C cameras. The GFX 50S and 50R are fantastic cameras, no doubt, but not fantastically better than the smaller and lighter alternatives I have at my disposal.

Reading through the spec sheet of the GFX 100, you get the sense that Fujifilm’s engineers were showing off

The GFX 100, on the other hand, blows the 50S and 50R out of the water. The viewfinder is sharper and clearer, the autofocus performance has been hugely improved (Fujifilm claims a more than 200% speed boost compared to the previous GFX models) and in every respect the camera just feels faster and more responsive. Not to mention the fact that it includes sensor-based image stabilization, and powerful 4K video features. In fact, reading through the official spec sheet of the GFX 100, you get the sense that beyond a certain point Fujifilm’s engineers were simply showing off – and who can blame them.

The detail in JPEG files from the Fujifilm GFX 100 is extraordinary, and we’re eagerly awaiting Raw support to really see what those pixels can do.

The fundamentally Big Deal here is that the GFX 100 is the first medium format digital camera to really compete with modern full-frame DSLR or mirrorless ILCs in terms of everyday shooting versatility. Obviously it’s not designed for shooting sports or action, but for portraiture, landscapes, travel and street photography, virtually the only thing that the GFX 100 can’t do is fit into a pocket.

We’re talking here about a 100MP hybrid stills / video camera with usable (in fact very good) autofocus that isn’t intended primarily for use in a studio. And for the first time, thanks to a new back-illuminated CMOS sensor, the GFX 100 should be able to deliver images that are not only bigger than contemporary full-frame cameras, but better. We’re still waiting to dig into the Raw files, but we’re expecting an increase in Raw dynamic range over both the GFX 50S and Nikon D850 at ISO 64.

Smaller sensor formats will probably always win in terms of ultimate versatility (the GFX 100’s sensor readout isn’t fast enough to match the silent shutter shooting abilities of, say, the Nikon Z7, but the GFX 100 gets impressively close. Taking a series of portraits in rapid succession (continuous shooting maxes out at 5 fps in 14-bit Raw mode) with face and eye-detection turned on, I kept forgetting I was shooting medium format.

All of those pixels are lovely, but they don’t come cheap. This JPEG file is 62MB in size, and 14 and 16-bit Raw files are even bigger. This could be a major consideration when it comes to file management and archiving.

Until I started to download the files, of course. One of the downsides of the GFX 100’s impressive operational speed is that you might find yourself burning through card space rather more quickly than you had anticipated. And with even JPEGs ranging between 30-70MB each, file management on a computer can be a frustrating experience. I wasn’t able to try out the 16-bit Raw mode with the camera we used in Italy, but with those files likely in the hundreds of megabytes each, 16-bit file storage could quickly become a headache.

The GFX 100 now offers phase-detection autofocus, covering almost 100% of the frame

While I don’t want to (and can’t) get into too much detail around specifics, I imagine you’d like to know how well things like autofocus, IBIS and video work on the GFX 100. The short answer in all cases is ‘very well, thanks for asking’. The GFX 100 now offers phase-detection autofocus, covering almost 100% of the frame. AF speed is still to some extent lens dependent (as we’d expect), but on a fast GF lens, like the 23mm F4, focus is acquired very quickly in AF-S mode, with no hunting in normal lighting conditions. I didn’t get the chance to test AF-C performance in any real depth, but I can say that it’s much improved over the GFX 50S/R, as we’d expect from a PDAF system.

The in-body stabilization system is rated according to Fujifilm for up to 5.5EV. In my shooting I didn’t see that kind of performance consistently, but I was able to shoot confidently down to at least 1/10 sec with the 45mm F2.8 prime attached, which allowed me to shoot in lower light and after a couple more glasses of Chianti than I could have done otherwise. Stabilization also gives you the option of introducing movement into images from (say) flowing water or traffic without the need to resort to a tripod.

This shot was taken hand-held using the GF 45mm F2.8 at 1/5sec. While very slight blurring is visible at 100%, the GFX 100’s in-body stabilization system has delivered an acceptably sharp image at well below 1/FL. The IBIS system greatly adds to the camera’s versatility in poor light.

While I was mostly focusing on stills, i did shoot some 4K video with the GFX 100 in Italy, and at its maximum 24p bitrate, footage looks incredibly detailed, with almost no noticeable noise even at ISO 3200. It almost seems surreal to be discussing 4K video shooting with a medium format camera, but video is far from an afterthought in the GFX 100’s feature set, and we’re looking forward to digging into this feature more when we get hold of a final camera.

For now, as you can probably tell, I’m very impressed. Obviously though, the GFX 100 isn’t for everyone. If you’re asking yourself ‘do I need 100MP?’ then the answer is almost certainly ‘no, you don’t – get off the Internet and go and play in the sunshine’. To be honest, I think photographers would be well-advised not to drop $ 10,000 on any camera unless they expect it to make some money back for them.

But if I was a commercial photographer or a professional wedding / portrait shooter, I would seriously consider the GFX 100, despite the substantial initial cost. It offers greater resolution and almost certainly better Raw image quality than any full-frame camera on the market, with none of the limitations or frustrations of previous medium format models. Add in-body stabilization, fast and effective autofocus and a human-friendly interface into the mix (and lest we forget, really good 4K video) and $ 10,000 doesn’t look unreasonable.

Hands-on with the Fujifilm GFX 100

It’s here! The long-awaited next-generation Fujifilm GFX has been officially launched. Announced at Photokina back in September last year, and previewed to us in Dubai in February, Fujifilm has kept pretty tight-lipped about the final specification of the camera up to now, but finally the waiting is over. Click through to learn more about the camera that Fujifilm is hoping will shake up the pro photography market – the GFX 100.

New 100MP medium-format sensor

Central (literally) to the GFX 100 is a brand new 100MP back-illuminated sensor, which, at a technical level, is basically an upsized version of the sensors used in the APS-C format X-T3 and X-T30. Upsized by 4X, in fact. Yes, the 43.8 x 32.9mm medium-format sensor in this camera has an area a full four times greater than APS-C, and 1.7X greater than full-frame. As well as the obvious increase in output resolution, this should also ensure a significant boost in image quality compared to smaller sensor formats, especially when it comes to Raw dynamic range.

In-camera stabilization system

That’s not the headline, though. The really big leap in the GFX 100 compared to the earlier GFX 50S/R is that the sensor is stabilized. Using technology developed for (and lessons learned from) the X-H1, Fujifilm created an IBIS system for the GFX 100, which the company claims is effective up to 5.5 stops. We’ve shot extensively with a pre-production GFX 100 and we’ve found that at an equivalent focal length of 35mm, the GFX 100 can safely be hand-held down to at least 1/10 sec, and at even longer shutter speeds when wider lenses are attached.

While not up there with the 6+ stops of stabilization offered by some of today’s Micro Four Thirds cameras, having at least a reliable 2-3 stops of stabilization makes the GFX 100 enormously versatile for outdoor and low-light work compared to any previous camera of this type.

‘Double structure’ construction

The sensor, lens mount and IBIS mechanism are structurally independent of the main magnesium alloy body shell, using what Fujifilm calls a ‘double structure’. This design is intended to isolate the key imaging components of the camera from external stresses on the body. Meanwhile, the body itself is sealed at 95 points against dust and moisture incursion.

On-sensor PDAF

The GFX 100’s new sensor also enables on-sensor phase-detection autofocus: a first for the GFX line. While focus speed is still somewhat lens dependent, once we updated our lenses with new firmware from Fujifilm, the overall experience of autofocus with the GF100 is noticeably faster and more positive (less ‘clunky’, essentially) than it is with the GFX 50S or 50R.

In normal / good light, automatic focus is swift (Fujifilm claims a speed increase of up to 210% compared to the GFX 50R) and accurate, with little of the hesitancy or occasional hunting which characterizes the AF experience on earlier GFX models. Near-total frame coverage from 3.76 million PDAF pixels and face / eye detection means that you don’t need to worry about following a subject (i.e. portrait subject) around the scene, either.

High-resolution electronic viewfinder…

In many ways, to anyone who has used the previous GFX 50S, the GFX 100 will offer a fairly familiar user experience. But there are some pretty big differences, beyond the obvious stuff like resolution and on-sensor PDAF.

In general terms, almost everything about the GFX 100 just feels upgraded. That’s everything from operational speed and control layout to details like viewfinder resolution. This is the new dedicated OLED EVF, which offers 5.76 million dots – a significant increase in resolution and sharpness compared to the 3.69 million-dot unit in the GFX 50S.

Like the GFX 50S, the GFX 100 viewfinder is removable. The lower-resolution viewfinder from the GFX 50S will fit the GFX 100 but its resolution will not magically increase.

With the EVF attached, the GF100’s overall body dimensions are essentially the same as a professional DSLR like the Nikon D5 or Canon EOS-1D X II. It feels a bit boxier than those cameras, but they’ll take up pretty much the same amount of space in a camera bag. With the EVF removed, the GFX 100 obviously becomes a smaller camera, and easier to stow (since it effectively becomes a square). Total body weight (with EVF attached, two batteries installed and a memory card) is about 3 lb, or 1.4 kilos – again, almost exactly the same as a Nikon D5 and similar DSLRs.

Vertical grip controls

Also like professional DSLRs, the GFX 100 features an integrated, non-removable vertical grip, with duplicated shutter button and some key control buttons. The grip is much less ergonomic than the more evolved bodies offered by Canon and Nikon, but it’s not uncomfortable. We do wish it was a bit more contoured though, especially when shooting with longer, heavier lenses.

Battery tray

The grip is home to a long battery tray which can accommodate two NP-T125 batteries, which are the same kind used in the GFX 50S and 50R. These batteries drain sequentially, and if necessary the camera can be used with only one installed in either the left or right slot.

Charging can be performed with an external dedicated charger or via USB, using the USB C socket on the camera. Impressively, battery life is comparable to the GFX 50S. Using CIPA’s methodology you should expect at least 400 shots per charge per battery with the 63mm F2.8 attached and Auto Power Save ‘on’. With two fully charged batteries installed videographers can expect around 170 minutes (almost 3 hours) of continuous 4K video capture, or 4 hours of HD.

New control interface

There are big changes on the top of the GFX 100, which features a much more stripped-down, minimalist design than either the GFX 50S or 50R, both of which look rather more ‘retro’ by comparison. In fact, at the risk of wearing out a predictable comparison, the GFX 100 is more reminiscent of the cleaner interface pioneered in Canon’s EOS-1 series D/SLRs. No big chunky dials for exposure compensation, shutter speed or shooting mode, and no big fat dedicated switches.

Instead, on the upper left you’ll find a simple 3-position lockable switch which places the camera in one of three modes: ‘Movie’ (self-explanatory), ‘Multi’ (any one of various multiple-exposure / bracketing modes which can be selected in the menu system) and ‘Still’. Pressing the central ‘Drive’ button allows you to select single shooting, continuous frame-rates and self-timer (etc.)

Top-mounted status display

On the upper right of the camera is a large multi-mode status display panel, which serves as the main display for key shooting parameters such as exposure settings / mode, film simulation, exposure compensation and so on. The display has several modes, including a full-screen histogram display. The two buttons to the right of the screen (on the left in this picture) toggle the display modes and change exposure mode (PASM) respectively. The panel itself is of the same monochrome type featured in the GFX 50S, but larger and higher resolution.

Just in front of the screen you’ll see the exposure compensation button, which follows the contours of the sloping ridge down to the shutter button and integrated on/off switch. One of our few frustrations with the ergonomics of the GFX 100 is that the exposure compensation button sits quite flush to the camera’s body and can be hard to locate and operate with your eye to the EVF.

Rear controls and OLED panel

There’s another screen on the rear of the GFX 100, a thin OLED display just below the main LCD. This was working in the pre-production camera that we’ve used, but not finalized. As such, we’re showing it here with the camera turned off. In the camera that we’ve used, this screen is used to show the status of several key shooting parameters, and we don’t expect this essential behavior to change in final shipping cameras.

This shot also shows the general disposition of the GFX 100’s rear controls, as well as the lack of textured rubber on the secondary vertical grip. Fans will be pleased to see that the Q button and AF joystick from previous Fujifilm cameras is retained, but there’s no 4-way controller or vertically mounted rear dial. Instead, the twin front and rear control dials, joystick and touch-screen are used for operations that don’t have a dedicated button.

Articulating touchscreen

On the rear of the GFX 100 we find an articulating 2.36 million-dot LCD touchscreen, of the same kind that GFX 50S users will be used to. While not fully articulating, the fold out, hinged design allows for low-angle framing in both landscape and portrait orientations.

Q button and vertical shooting

This shot illustrates a minor frustration with the GFX 100 (at least of the pre-production sample that we used) – the ‘Q’ button is really easy to press accidentally, especially the one on the vertical grip. As such, when setting up for a portrait-format shot, the first thing we saw in the viewfinder was often the Q menu display.

Fortunately, this display is easily dismissed with a half-press of the shutter button. Given Fujifilm’s rapid response to similar issues with the X-T30, we wouldn’t be surprised to see this behavior tweaked via firmware in shipping cameras.

Twin SD card slots

Twin SD card slots operate as you’d expect, and can be set up for overflow storage, backup or separate stills / video storage. The GFX 100 is UHS-II compatible, and with a fast card installed, the camera is remarkably quick in operation.

Whereas it’s not uncommon for other medium-format digital cameras to start to moan and wheeze after a few high-resolution Raw exposures, the GFX 100 appears to have power to spare from its quad-core X-Processor 4 engine. To photographers, the benefits of this speediness should go without saying. The downside is that with 100MP to play with, and a processor that can keep up with that many pixels, it’s all too easy to ‘overshoot’ and run out of card space.

That being said, our shooting so far has been in 14-bit Raw mode. It’s unlikely that the GFX 100 will be quite so light on its feet when capturing extended 16-bit Raw sequences.

4K video and I/O ports

One of the reasons the GFX 100 packs so much processing power is that as well as high-resolution stills (with the option for 16-bit capture), it also features an advanced 4K video feature set. While the video functions weren’t finalized on the pre-production camera that we’ve used, the 4K video footage that we captured at the GFX 100’s maximum bitrate looks very, very nice, and we’re looking forward to diving into this feature as soon as we can get our hands on a reviewable camera.

With features like F-Log Rec 2020, the popular Eterna cine profile and the ability to capture 4:2:2 10-bit uncompressed footage via the HDMI port, the GFX 100 has the potential to be a genuinely impressive video camera, and our initial impressions are very positive.

This shot shows the microphone and headphone monitoring sockets, as well as USB-C and micro HDMI interfaces, and a port for 15V DC power in. Towards the bottom of this image you can also see the catch for the battery tray, which fits lengthways into the vertical grip. Surprisingly – and perhaps a little alarmingly – this catch does not have a lock, which presents the theoretical risk of accidentally opening the battery tray if the catch snags on an item of clothing, etc.

The GFX 100 will be available at the end of June, for an MSRP (body only) of $ 9,999.95, which works out to roughly $ 100 per megapixel.

Fujifilm Japan to increase color film prices by 30%

Fujiifilm Japan has announced that from the beginning of June it will increase the price it charges distribution companies for some of its color films. Fujifilm says the it has tried to absorb rising material and distribution costs itself, but has been forced to raise prices by 30%.

A list of the films that will be affected by the price increase.

The films that will be subject to the price rise include color negative and positive emulsions, in roll and cut sheet formats. The rises in Japan will come into force on 1st June, but the statement suggests prices rises have already been made in other parts of the world. How these manufacturer price increases will feed down to the consumer is still up in the air.

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sono) will carry out a price revision of the photographic film products provided to distribution companies, including photo studios, on June 1, 2019 in Japan (* 1).

While raw materials and distribution costs for photographic films continue to rise, Fujifilm has endeavored to absorb costs such as improvement in production efficiency and cost reductions in order to stably supply high-quality photographic films to the market.
However, it will be difficult to absorb only by corporate efforts, such as further increases in distribution costs and rising prices of some raw materials, and we will raise prices for photographic film products as described below.

Sony a6400 vs Fujifilm X-T30: Which is best for you?

Introduction

The Sony a6400 and Fujifilm X-T30 are the two company’s mid-priced mirrorless cameras. They’re 4K-capable cameras with similar resolution APS-C sensors: 24MP on the Sony, 26MP on the Fujifilm.

Both build on the legacies of Gold Award-winning predecessors, which helps establish them as presumed big hitters. And, having tested both cameras extensively, this is a fair assumption: they’re both class-leading cameras. Chris and Jordan from DPReview TV have already looked at their various strengths and weaknesses, so we’re going to look at how they compare for different types of photography.

Spec comparison

From a specs point of view the a6400 and X-T30 look pretty similar: they’re both 4K-capable APS-C mirrorless cameras with very similar price tags. Both cameras offer similar resolution (24MP on the Sony, 26MP on the Fujifilm), both have 2.36M-dot viewfinders and both can shoot at an impressive frame rate 11 fps with autofocus on the Sony, 20 or 8 fps on the Fujifilm (depending on whether you’re in a situation that allows the use of electronic shutter).

And yet, the moment you pick them up, it becomes apparent that they’re very different creatures. Differences in performance and radically distinct design philosophies mean picking between the two becomes much more complex than simply ‘which feels more comfortable’ or ‘which has the lenses that I need?’

Handling comparison

The difference in design philosophy is immediately apparent just by looking at them: the Fujifilm is studded (perhaps overwhelmed) with direct control points, including a mixture of dedicated dials and customizable function wheels. By contrast, the Sony has fewer buttons and only the two control dials, which point to a camera that doesn’t invite (or, perhaps, require) such a degree of engagement with its settings.

Conversely, the Sony has the more complex menu system, with vast numbers of options lodged in a structure that relies on user memory more than most (though, once configured, your need to delve into the menus can be minimized). The Fujifilm’s menus are crowded but they’re better laid-out and have more indication of where each setting is likely to be found. Both have customizable ‘My Menu’ tabs if you find yourself needing regular access to menu-only options.

The other major difference is in autofocus. Not so much in terms of performance (though the Sony is, as good or better across the board), but in terms of complexity and usability. The Fujifilm has a series of different AF modes that you’re likely to swap between, depending on what you’re trying to shoot, and the choice of using the AF joystick or touchscreen to choose a subject. The Sony also has a wide range of AF area modes but, for most shooting situations, can be left in one mode, pointed at your subject and trusted to follow it, requiring little user input or mode-changing.

Other contenders

The most direct video/stills competitor to the Sony/Fujifilm duo is probably the Panasonic Lumix DC-G95 (G90 or G91 outside North America). It’s also a 4K-capable stills/video camera, but one that brings an image-stabilized 20MP Four Thirds sensor to the table, rather than the unstabilized APS-C chips of the other two. We wouldn’t rule it out just yet, but our initial impressions are that its video and autofocus aren’t up to the same high standards as the pair we’re discussing here.

Canon appears to have retreated from this section of the market for now: it’s more enthusiast-friendly M5 and M6 models now looking rather long in the tooth and lacking 4K video. Olympus’s OM-D E-M10 III is a less-expensive alternative and lacks the AF performance of the more recent APS-C models.

Sports and wildlife

Sports and wildlife is a relatively comfortable win for the Sony. The Fujifilm’s AF system is more than up to the job of shooting sports (especially if you tune the AF behavior, manually follow the action and keep your subject under a Zone AF region), but the Sony system does well without the need for so much intervention, and is especially good at subject tracking.

Lens choice may be the deciding factor here. Both systems offer fairly expensive 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 lenses if you need a lot of reach, but Fujifilm’s APS-C-only version is both smaller and less expensive. Fujifilm offers a 50-140mm F2.8 zoom whose 70-200mm F4-like equivalent behavior is arguably more useful than Sony’s similarly-sized 70-200mm F4 (which ends up behaving more like a full-frame 105-400mm F6 if you mount it on the a6400).

Family and moments

The Sony is the clear winner here, primarily for how easy its autofocus is to use and how well it understands human subjects (focusing on an eye if it can see one, but reliably keeping focus on the same person if they look or turn away). The tenacity with which the a6400 will maintains focus on the person you’ve chosen is simply unequaled.

The Fujifilm still makes a handy family camera, though. It requires a little more patience and more user input, but can be paired with lenses such as the 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 OIS, which is a much better and more flexible zoom than the Sony 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 power zoom.

Both systems include the option of 18-135mm lenses, which provide huge amounts of flexibility, though their F3.5-5.6 maximum apertures may not give the shallow depth-of-field or low light advantages over using a good smartphone. Of course, if you don’t regularly zoom-in on your smartphone, it’s worth looking at the available prime lenses for both systems.

Landscape

There’s not a huge amount to choose between the two cameras in terms of landscape shooting. The Fujifilm lens lineup includes a series of nice zooms and a good choice of high-quality F1.4 prime lenses, which might just tip the balance in its favor.

They’re fairly evenly balanced in terms of battery life and portability, and both have rear screens that tilt up for tripod use. There’s not much to choose between the cameras in terms of Raw performance: not all Raw converters do a great job with Fujifilm’s X-Trans sensor pattern, but conversely Sony insists on applying damaging compression to its files, which slightly reduces their flexibility.

Neither camera is especially easy to operate with gloves, though if you deactivated the command dials, the Fujifilm’s dedicated shutter speed, aperture and exposure comp dials are easier to use than the Sony’s rear dial, which is fiddly at the best of times.

Lifestyle and social

The Fujifilm’s attractive JPEG output and selection of lenses makes it a very credible choice for lifestyle and social photography. It has face and eye detection and can offer shallow depth-of-field images if you pair it with the right lens. A wide selection of prime lenses (with a choice of F2 or F1.4 in several focal lengths), makes this pairing easier.

The Sony comes out in front, for us, though, especially on the ‘social’ side of things. Its AF system is more responsive and easier to use when trying to shoot spontaneous photos, particularly of photos with people in them. Added to this, Sigma’s trio of F1.4 lenses may well include a focal length that works for your style of photography.

With its screen that flips all the way up, the Sony is also the clear winner if you want to take selfies.

Formal portraits

When it comes to posed portraiture, again it’s probably a slight win to the Sony. Its uncannily sticky eye-detection system can be entirely relied upon, freeing up the photographer to concentrate on their lighting, their composition and engaging with their subject. Stick the comparatively affordable Sigma 56mm F1.4 on the front and the camera will do much of the rest.

It’s only a slight win, though. Fujifilm’s 56mm F1.2 APD is a lovely portrait lens, as is its 135mm-equiv. 90mm F2 (though neither comes cheap). Eye detection works well, especially with a single subject and the X-T30’s choice of film-mimicking color modes makes it easy to deliver attractive results.

Sony has stronger native flash options, with a radio-frequency remote flash system, but both are well supported by third-party makers, making it easy to find flash heads that can be remotely triggered.

Both the Sony and Fujifilm are pretty small cameras, and can be paired with fairly small lenses (though it’s worth checking whether there’s a small prime lens available in your favored focal length). Both have rear touchscreens that tilt upwards for from-the-hip shooting and both have relatively quiet shutter mechanisms. They both offer completely silent electronic shutter modes, with the Fujifilm exhibiting less rolling shutter distortion in that mode.

Both cameras make it pretty simple to transfer your images to a smartphone, with the Sony offering NFC in addition to Bluetooth, which makes it a little quicker to use with Android devices.

Again the Sony’s simpler, more precise AF system may give it a bit of an edge, particularly for candid people pics. It’s also a little smaller and more discreet.

Video

The Sony a6300 was one of the first sub-$ 1000 cameras to offer really detailed 4K capture, but video performance (and our expectations of it) have been one of the areas of greatest improvement since then. It’s much easier to spot the rather poor rolling shutter performance now that a range of cameras can offer the level of detail capture that once rather dazzled us.

Fujifilm matches the Sony for detail capture but with much less rolling shutter and no crop (as the a6400 does when shooting 30p). And that’s before you consider the Fujifilm’s array of attractive and useful Film Simulation modes (including the flexible Eterna mode and the option of Log capture with a downloadable LUT to make processing easier). Unlike the Sony, the Fujifilm can offer headphone monitoring via a USB-C adapter.

The a6400’s video is easier to point-and-shoot: again thanks to its impressive tap-to-track autofocus, though the X-T30 can track human subjects fairly well. The Fujifilm is the better video tool overall, if you’re serious about videography and are willing to manual focus. There’s even the option to output 10-bit footage if you get serious enough to buy an external recorder.

Conclusion

Looking at these two cameras through the lens of specific photographic applications is an interesting exercise, with the importance of the simplicity and reliability of the a6400’s AF system shining through (when assessing them in general terms we concluded there wasn’t a lot to choose between them).

The a6400’s updated AF system is genuinely phenomenal

We’re still not big fans of the experience of shooting with the Sony: its two command dials are undermined by the need to stop and adjust your grip every time you want to use the lower one. Its menus are still difficult to navigate and its touchscreen is poorly utilized. That said, its updated AF system is genuinely phenomenal, removing, at a stroke, one of the things you previously would have had to mess around with. If your photography benefits from fast, precise focus (particularly for human subjects), the Sony is the stronger choice.

Both these cameras are significantly better than the already good cameras they replace, so there’s no wrong choice here

We still really like the X-T30, though. It looks pretty, is engaging to use and produces attractive JPEGs and consistently better video than the Sony. It’s not without its own usability flaws: the joystick and Q buttons are awkwardly placed and the pressable command dials are fiddly and easily knocked. Overall there are arguably too many control points for such a small camera, but it’s a camera that can be set up to be really enjoyable to use.

Both these cameras are significantly better than the already good cameras they replace, so there’s no wrong choice here. So which is more important to you: the experience of photography or the certainty of getting the shot?

Buying Guide: The best lenses for Fujifilm X-mount mirrorless cameras

Whether you’ve bought an inexpensive Fujifilm X-A5 with a kit lens, or a higher-end body like the X-T3, at some point you’re going to want some new glass. Whether you’re shooting portraits or want a versatile travel zoom, we’ve got you covered.

Before we go on, keep in mind that these lenses are for X-series cameras only. Fujifilm’s GFX medium format bodies use a different mount, which we’re not covering in this buying guide.


For each of the categories below the winner was the lens which we found to offer the best combination of quality and value. In most cases, we’ve also provided a more budget-friendly option, as well as a choice for those with more to spend.

Best kit lens replacement

Standard (kit) zooms are just what they sound like – versatile, general-purpose lenses that start with a fairly wide angle of view and allow you to zoom in to a focal length traditionally used for portraits.

Our pick: XF 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 R OIS LM

If your camera didn’t already come with it, we’d suggest upgrading to the excellent 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 OIS. The 18-55mm is a significant step up from Fujifilm’s XC 16-50mm and 15-45mm kit lenses, albeit not quite as wide as either.

XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR

It’s big, it’s heavy, it’s unstabilized, but more importantly, the 16-55mm F2.8 is optically excellent. It’s one of the most powerful ways to get the most out of your camera.

For more flexibility:
XF 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR

At time of publication, the 18-135mm is the best way of adding a lot more flexibility to your camera. Just bear in mind that it has a slightly slower aperture than the 18-55mm and doesn’t go any wider, so think carefully about what you’d gain.

Best prime / single focal length lens (all-around use)

Removing the complexity of a variable focal length often allows for prime lenses to be smaller, lighter and sharper, while letting more light through and being more useful in dimly lit situations.

For all-around use we’d recommend a semi-wide-angle lens that can lend itself to a range of subjects.

Our pick: XF 23mm F2 R WR

The 23mm F2 isn’t the sharpest lens in the Fujinon lineup, but it’s small, relatively fast and sensibly priced. It makes for a respectably small combination with most X-series cameras and provides decent low light performance and some control over depth-of-field. The equivalent focal length of 35mm makes this a perfect everyday lens for walk-around shooting.

XF 27mm F2.8

The 27mm lens offers a 40mm equiv. field-of-view, which can be great fun to shoot with. At F2.8 it’s not going to give much of a benefit in terms of light capture or depth-of-field compared with a kit zoom. Its major appeal is size: it’s convenient and discreet when paired with most X-series cameras.

Money no object:
XF 23mm F1.4 R

The Fujifilm 23mm F1.4 is optically excellent, making it a great do-everything prime. It’s not especially fast to focus but if you want the quality and improved low light performance it brings, then that’s the trade-off.

Best prime / single focal length lens (for portraits)

Prime lenses are just a single focal length; removing the complexity of a zoom often allows for these lenses to be smaller, lighter and sharper, while letting more light through and being more useful in dimly lit situations.

For portraits we’d recommend a mid-telephoto lens that lets you shoot head-and-shoulders shots from a comfortable working distance.

Our pick: XF 56mm F1.2 R

The 56mm F1.2 is designed to give the same angle-of-view and depth-of-field as a classic 85mm F1.8 lens does on full frame. It’s one of the slower-focusing lenses in the system, but it’s impressively sharp and well-matched for portrait shooting. There’s a more expensive ‘APD’ version if you need smoother background blur.

For a bit more breathing room:
XF 90mm F2 R LM WR

The 90mm F2 isn’t cheap, but it’s extremely sharp, is faster to focus than the 56mm and gives plenty of control over depth-of-field. It also gives a longer working distance, which some people will prefer.

The inexpensive option:
XF 50mm F2 R WR

The 50mm’s equivalent focal length of 75mm is a bit shorter than the 56mm’s, but the magnification difference is minimal in normal use and it’s much less expensive, faster to focus and still pleasantly sharp. It’s also small enough to carry with you at all times.

Best wide-angle zoom lens

Wide-angle lenses are often useful for taking photos of interiors, landscapes and architecture.

Our pick: XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS

The 10-24mm F4 is a mid-range stabilized zoom that extends out to a usefully-wide 15mm equivalent. It’s not cheap but the optical quality, solid build, constant aperture and inclusion of OIS help explain the price.

XF 8-16mm F2.8 R LM WR

If you need to go wider or brighter than the 10-24mm, there’s the 8-16mm F2.8. It’s well-corrected and generally superb optically. Just be aware: it’s big, heavy, and cannot accept screw-in filters.

Best telephoto zoom lens

Telephoto lenses start out being fairly zoomed-in, and allow you to zoom in even further so you can fill your frame with more distant subjects.

Our pick: XF 55-200mm F3.5-4.8 R LM OIS

Although the range makes it sound like a budget ‘two lens kit’ filler, the Fujinon 55-200mm is a well built, fast-to-focus mid-price option. We used it as our autofocus test lens for many years and were impressed with its performance.

XC 50-230mm F4.5-6.7 OIS II

The 50-230mm is a low-cost stabilized tele-zoom. Be aware of that F6.7 maximum aperture at the long end of the zoom: it’s not going to let in a lot of light, so your images are likely to be noisy in all but the best light.

Money no object:
XF 50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR

The 50-140mm F2.8 makes a lot more sense when you realize it covers roughly the same range as the classic 70-200mm sports lenses do on full-frame cameras. It’s fast, well-built and offers image stabilization, and is much easier to wield than most lenses with this focal length.

Best macro lens

Macro lenses allow you to focus very close to small subjects, which is handy for photographing flowers or bugs.

Our pick: XF 80mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro

The 80mm F2.8 Macro is sharp, stabilized and gives a useful working distance, meaning you’re not bearing-down on your subject. A flexible, attractive choice for close-up shooting.

We’ve been impressed by what we’ve seen of the Zeiss Touit series but they’re significantly more expensive than their Fujinon counterparts. We prefer the 50mm Macro to Fujifilm’s rather slow-to-focus 60mm F2.4 if you need something wider than the 80mm.

Best travel zoom lens

If you want a versatile lens that can handle most shooting situation, then consider a travel zoom. You still start out with a fairly wide field-of-view and can zoom in almost as much as many telephoto lenses. This is convenient, but these lenses tend to let less light through them, so aren’t as useful in dimly lit situations, and they may not always give you the sharpest results.

Our pick: XF 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR

The 18-135mm offers a flexible range for whatever you encounter while traveling, which is fortunate, since it’s essentially your only choice at present. It would be nice if it went a little wider, but it covers a hugely useful range, offers image stabilization and a weather-resistant design, making it a solid choice for traveling.

Worth waiting for?
XF 16-80mm F4 R OIS WR

If you haven’t got a specific trip already planned, it might be worth waiting for the forthcoming 16-80mm F4. Constant F4 may not sound too exciting on an APS-C camera but the 24-120mm equivalent range may prove more useful than the 27-203mm equiv reach of the 18-135, especially if the quality is better.
