This macOS app creates HTML galleries from your Photos library

19 Dec

A new macOS app called photos2webgallery lets you create HTML web galleries from your Photos library. The resulting HTML output can be shared in many ways, including via upload to your own web server or shared via USB-drive.

Thanks to HTML5 support photos2webgallery works with all modern browsers. An integrated HEIC to JPG image format converter makes sure even images captured in the Apple-specific format will be displayed. Videos are embedded as well.

Alongside the images and videos the output galleries also display metadata information, such as date and time as well as the capture location with a Google Maps link. In the user interface users can select the albums they want to share and a range of slideshow effects is available, too.

The app is now available for download at the photos2webgallery website for a reduced price of $ 31.99.

Google Photos excludes unsupported video formats from its free unlimited storage

13 Dec

If you can live with some compression being applied to your files, Google Photos offers a reliable and free method for storing your photos and videos. The platform can also be used for storing original-quality JPGs and Raw files but those files will count against your quota and once you’re out of storage you’ll have to pay for extra space.

Depending on the file types you are storing, some of your video files might now count against the quota as well. Google has introduced new rules to make unsupported videos count against your Google account storage quota. One of the reasons for this move — but likely not the only one — might be that some users apparently used fake file extensions to disguise unsupported files.

Whatever the reasons, to not count against your quota from now on video files have to be at least one second long, be of the right file type, be playable by Google Photos and be playable when downloaded to your device. Below are the file types accepted by Google:

  • Photos: .jpg, .png, .webp and some RAW files.
  • Live photos can be backed up if you use the Google Photos app on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Videos: .mpg, .mod, .mmv, .tod, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .divx, .mov, .m4v, .3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m2t, .m2ts, .mts, and .mkv files.

Any videos uploaded after December 6 which don’t comply with these requirements will take up storage space.

Sony removes a7/R III firmware version 2.0 from its website, says it’s ‘working on the issue’

09 Dec

Two months after releasing firmware version 2.0 for its a7 III (Windows, MacOS) and a7R III (Windows, MacOS) mirrorless cameras, Sony has removed the firmware update from its website.

At the top of the download pages for Sony’s a7 III and a7R III firmware, an update read:

IMPORTANT: We apologize for the inconvenience, but the release of this software update has been delayed. We are working on the issue and will release the update as soon as possible. (Added on 12-07-2018)

DPReview contacted Sony Friday, December 7th, 2018 asking for more detail on why the update was removed. As of publishing this article on Saturday, December 8th, 2018 DPReview has not received a response. This article will updated accordingly if and when DPReview gets a response from Sony.

Tumblr will remove and ban all ‘adult content’ from its platform starting December 17th

05 Dec

In a controversial move, social media website Tumblr has announced it will start removing all pornography and explicit content on December 17th, 2018 and subsequently ban adult content going forward.

The ban comes three weeks after Apple removed the Tumblr app from its iOS app store after it was discovered underaged content was slipping through an ‘industry database of child sexual abuse material,’ but it’s unclear if the move to ban all adult content is due to Apple’s decision.

For context of how much adult content there is on Tumblr, former Tumblr CEO David Karp said in June 2012 that roughly two to four percent of the content on Tumblr was related to pornography. A year later, in May 2013, web analytics firm SimilarGroup came out with its own analysis claiming 22,775 of the 200,000 most-visited Tumblr domains were pornographic in nature — roughly 11.4 percent. The discrepancies between those two statistics is stark, but regardless of how it’s looked at, there’s a great deal of adult content floating around the social network with more than 100-million blogs.

‘Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and we’ve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change,’ says Tumblr CEO Jeff D’Onofrio in a blog post on the Staff Tumblr. He goes on to say ‘Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content […] We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.’

Where things get interesting is how Tumblr is defining adult content. On Tumblr’s Help Center page, it defines it as follows:

Adult content primarily includes photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts.

Tumblr goes on to say on the same page what is allowed, which reads as follows:

Examples of exceptions that are still permitted are exposed female-presenting nipples in connection with breastfeeding, birth or after-birth moments, and health-related situations, such as post-mastectomy or gender confirmation surgery. Written content such as erotica, nudity related to political or newsworthy speech, and nudity found in art, such as sculptures and illustrations, are also stuff that can be freely posted on Tumblr.

In terms of photography, it appears as though nearly all nude photography will be removed and banned, regardless of how tasteful it is or isn’t. That is, unless it’s a male nipple or pertains to the other exceptions mentioned above.

Tumblr has started flagging content as inappropriate already and will continue to do so. In the event a piece of content was flagged unnecessarily, something that’s already happening, Tumblr has an appeal button alongside the post that can be used to protest the flag.
