Fujifilm X-E2 firmware 4.00 brings Classic Chrome and other X-E2S features

It may be over two years old, but that doesn’t mean Fujifilm has given up on the X-E2.

Fujifilm has released its promised firmware update for its X-E2 mid-range mirrorless camera. The firmware update adds a host of feature and operational improvements, including the Classic Chrome film simulation and AF upgrades from the recent X-T models, as well as a revised user interface and multiple Auto ISO settings.

The firmware update for the over two-year-old model continues Fujifilm’s habit of supporting existing users and brings the camera into line with most of the latest X-series models.

The firmware can be downloaded now from the Fujifilm website

The changes are so significant that, rather than publishing an addendum, Fujifilm has released a new version of the camera’s owner’s manual.

Leica T firmware version 1.5 update adds Wi-Fi Direct feature

Leica has released firmware version 1.5 for the Leica T, adding Wi-Fi Direct functionality for transferring images wirelessly. After updating, Leica T owners can set up a mobile hotspot through which images are shuttled between the camera and an iOS mobile device running the Leica T app. In addition, firmware 1.5 speeds up the camera’s wireless reconnection with known networks and improves reconnection reliability.

The Leica T for iOS app is available from iTunes. The new firmware version 1.5 update is available through the Leica T website.

Nikon D5300 and D5500 firmware 1.01 adds support for AF-P DX 18-55mm F3.5-56 lenses

Nikon has released firmware version 1.01 for its D5300 and D5500 cameras. Both updates add support for the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm F3.5–5.6G VR and AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm F3.5–5.6G lenses, Nikon’s first DX lenses to offer stepping motors, as well as an a5 Manual focus ring in AF mode option for the D5500. Both updates also bring several bug fixes correcting issues affecting each model, such as camera freezing.

Nikon D5300 Firmware version 1.01:

  • AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR and AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G lenses are now supported. Vibration reduction can be enabled or disabled using the new Optical VR option in the photo SHOOTING MENU, which is displayed when an AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR lens is attached.
  • The following issues have been addressed:
  • Choosing negative values for Exposure compensation in the RETOUCH MENU > NEF (RAW) processing display did not have the desired effect.
  • Continued scrolling of the menus for some languages would cause the camera to freeze.

Nikon D5500 Firmware version 1.01:

  • AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR and AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G lenses are now supported. Vibration reduction can be enabled or disabled using the new Optical VR option in the photo SHOOTING MENU, which is displayed when an AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR lens is attached. The CUSTOM SETTING MENU now contains an a5 Manual focus ring in AF mode option that can be enabled or disabled when an AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR or AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G is attached.
  • The following issues have been addressed:
  • Noise would occur at four-second intervals in audio output to external recorders connected via HDMI in movie live view.
  • Choosing negative values for Exposure compensation in the RETOUCH MENU >  NEF (RAW) processing display did not have the desired effect.
  • Selecting ON for Exposure smoothing during interval timer photography would result in all shots after the first being overexposed.

Leica SL firmware update improves image and EVF quality and L-Log gamma

Leica has announced a firmware update for its SL (Typ 601) full-frame mirrorless camera. The company says that firmware v1.2 improves low ISO performance, the quality of the image on the electronic viewfinder, and makes entering Wi-FI passwords easier.

It also corrects an issue with using the Leica Log Gamma curve (L-Log) with internal 8-bit recording, which was previously only capturing the bright tones from the scene. The update has lowered the offset to zero, which will allow the files to incorporate darker tones.

Finally, there’s now an image magnification tool for use with Leica M and R lenses, which is activated by the AE Lock button. The update also ensures that the correct EXIF information is recorded when using R lenses via their adapter.

The update is now available for download and can be installed at a local Leica store.

Leica Camera Announces New Firmware Update for SL Users

Leica Firmware Update 1.2 Optimizes Picture Quality and Improves Handling 

December 14, 2015 – Leica Camera today announced a new firmware update 1.2 for the Leica SL, which includes several fundamental improvements in the camera’s picture quality and handling. To access the firmware update, registered camera users can log into the Leica owner’s area of the Leica website and download the firmware version at: https://owners.leica-camera.com. Leica users can also take their camera to a Leica store and take advantage of the free update installation service. 

The new firmware update 1.2 includes optimization of picture quality at ISO values from 50 to 400, improvements to the image in the electronic viewfinder and greater flexibility when entering WLAN passwords. 

When shooting with Leica M and R lenses, camera users will find that the new firmware update 1.2 activates a loupe (magnifying) function with the auto exposure lock button (AE Lock) to allow fast manual focusing. Additionally, the firmware update guarantees the correct indication of the R-Adapter-M and the R-Lens used in the EXIF data of image files.

Finally, the firmware update offers an improvement in the Leica Log Gamma curve (L-Log) for video, enabling its use for in-camera 8-bit recording. The reduction of the offset will now allow recordings to appear considerably darker. Subsequently, videos recorded with L-Log must be corrected with a gamma correction in an external video editing program. The use of L-Log enables greater leeway for post-production color grading of videos recorded on the Leica SL. 

Leica SL owners can also find a regularly updated and expanded overview of all SD cards compatible for use with their camera at sl.leica-camera.com.

Nikon issues D750 and D4s firmware updates, optimizes D750 VR with compatible lenses

Nikon has released firmware updates for its D750 and D4S DSLRs, providing both with a new external recording control option for use with external recorders using Atomos Open Protocol. At the end of a list of bug fixes, Nikon also mentions that the D750’s firmware version 1.10 introduces ‘optimal vibration reduction’ with vibration reduction lenses. We’re hoping this addresses a glitch in which VR can sometimes contribute to image shake.

Other notes on the firmware updates for both cameras relate to bug fixes in movie live view, and the D750’s update addresses some minor problems with HDR mode and in-camera Raw processing among other things. See below for more details.

  • An External recording control option has been added to the HDMI item in the SETUP MENU. If the camera is connected via HDMI to a third-party recorder that supports the Atomos Open Protocol (the Atomos SHOGUN, NINJA2, or NINJA BLADE), selecting On allows camera controls to be used to start and stop recording. More information is available in a supplementary manual.
  • Note:Choose an option other than 576p (progressive) or 480p (progressive) for HDMI > Output resolution in the SETUP MENU.
  • Fixed the following issues:
    – The brightness of the live view photography display would not change when a command dial was rotated to adjust exposure compensation with On (Auto reset) selected for b Metering/exposure > b3 Easy exposure compensation > Easy exposure compensation in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU.
    – Although the preview button would stop the lens down to maximum aperture when assigned the Preview role, the maximum aperture indicator would not appear in the monitor.
    – In rare cases, the shutter would not be released when the user attempted to take photographs in movie live view.
    – About 4 seconds of static could be heard on audio recorded with external HDMI recorders during movie live view.
    – The shutter speed, aperture, and ISO sensitivity displayed in the monitor during movie live view would differ from values in the final movie file.
    – Part of the focus point would disappear if the user zoomed in while the framing grid was displayed.
    – Volume could sometimes not be adjusted if movies were played with indicators hidden during full-frame playback (None (image only)).
    – Exposure compensation would fail to produce the desired results if a negative value was selected when NEF (RAW) images were processed using the NEF (RAW) processing option in the RETOUCH MENU.
    – Images would in rare cases fail to record correctly with HDR (high dynamic range) selected in the PHOTO SHOOTING MENU.
    – If On was selected for Exposure smoothing during interval timer photography, every frame after the first would be overexposed.
    – File numbers were not assigned in the proper sequence.
    – The focus point would not be displayed in the correct location in the monitor.
    – In some languages, characters or parts of characters would be missing from the SETUP MENU > Location data > Position display.
    – In some languages, characters or parts of characters would be missing from the SETUP MENU > AF fine-tune > List saved values display.
    – In some regions, nothing would be displayed when Conformity marking was selected in the SETUP MENU.
  • Some help text has been changed.
  • Optimal vibration reduction is now available with vibration reduction lenses.

Nikon D4S firmware version 1.30

  • An External recording control option has been added to the HDMI item in the SETUP MENU. If the camera is connected via HDMI to a third-party recorder that supports the Atomos Open Protocol (the Atomos SHOGUN, NINJA2, or NINJA BLADE), selecting On allows camera controls to be used to start and stop recording. More information is available in a supplementary manual.

Note:

  • Choose an option other than 576p (progressive) or 480p (progressive) for HDMI > Output resolution in the SETUP MENU.
  • Choose an option other than Auto for HDMI > Output resolution in the SETUP MENU when 640x  424; 30p or 640x  424; 25p is selected for Movie settings > Frame size/frame rate in the SHOOTING MENU.
  • Fixed the following issues:
    – In rare cases, the shutter would not be released when the user attempted to take photographs in movie live view.
    – About 4 seconds of static could be heard on audio recorded with external HDMI recorders during movie live view.
    – Exposure compensation would fail to produce the desired results if a negative value was selected when NEF (RAW) images were processed using the NEF (RAW) processing option in the RETOUCH MENU.

DxO ONE gets 1/20,000sec top shutter speed and better handling via firmware version 1.2

The DxO ONE smartphone companion camera is to benefit from a host of improvements and new features when the company releases new firmware early in December. General handling will be improved with what DxO vaguely describes as ‘instant access to advanced capture parameters and photo information with a simple swipe’ and ‘more control over the entire photo and video capture process’. The DxO ONE will also be compatible with the Apple Watch via a new app designed especially for it, and the DxO ONE will go on sale in Apple Stores. 

New features in firmware version 1.2 include the broadening of the shutter speed range to encompass 30-1/20,000sec, and continuous shooting – though the company doesn’t say at what rate. The video mode will allow manual control of aperture, ISO, white balance and ‘more’. 

DxO says that the changes have been instigated by user feedback from photographers, and that the new firmware will make the device ‘even more powerful’. For more information visit the DxO website.

Earlier this month, Sony announced firmware v2.0 for its Alpha 7 II. This update gives the Sony a7 II uncompressed Raw and better autofocus performance with adapted lenses. Previously, the a7 II could only use Contrast Detect AF to acquire focus when using adapted glass, resulting in quite a bit of hunting. Read more

Nikon D810 firmware C 1.10 now available

Nikon has released updated firmware for its D810 DSLR, taking the software from version C 1.02 to C 1.10. The new firmware brings with it several changes, the majority of which are bug fixes. In addition to correcting issues, v1.10 adds an external recording control option for using the camera to start and stop third-party recorders connected over HDMI. Read more

Leica has released a major firmware update for its T (Typ 701) APS-C mirrorless camera. Firmware 1.4 promises to make autofocus twice as fast, and improves touchscreen responsiveness by three times. The company has also announced plans to release two new prime lenses for the T in 2016. Read more

Phase One offers XF firmware update, three new Scheider Kreuznach leaf shutter lenses

Phase One has today introduced a firmware update for its new XF system, announced in June. The update brings new tools to those using the XF with its Waist Level Finder, as well as a seismograph vibration delay mode.
