Kodak Alaris is actively looking to sell off its paper and film unit for an estimated $34M

A surprising report has revealed that Kodak Alaris, specifically its film unit responsible for bringing back Ektachrome 35mm film products, is up for sale. The business move was revealed by Inside Imaging, which reports that at least part of Kodak Alaris may be split off and sold as soon as next month.

Though the company had not publicly revealed its plans, some details emerged from a recently discovered financial report lodged with the UK’s Companies House in December 2018. According to the report, which covers a time period of January 1 to March 31, 2017, Kodak Alaris’ Paper, Photochemicals and Film (PPF) unit has been up for sale since January 2018 following the board’s decision to ‘actively divest the business to a buyer with greater market synergies.’

The report indicates the unit has a conservatively estimated value of $ 34 million and that ‘advanced discussions with a bidder’ for the PPF unit are currently underway. Kodak Alaris, at least based on the financial report, anticipates the sale will happen by March 31, 2019, but with the potential for spilling over to a later date.

Kodak Alaris’ sole shareholder is the Kodak Pension Plan, a UK pension fund referred to as KPP2 that acquired Kodak Alaris from Eastman Kodak for $ 325 million in 2013. With Kodak Alaris came £1.5 billion / $ 2.7b in debt, and though Kodak Alaris is a profitable business, its bottom line after taxes has seen huge losses.

Kodak Alaris CEO Marc Jourlait confirmed to Inside Imaging that the company has ‘privately briefed’ potential customers on its intention to ‘explore sale of some or all of our assets.’ The PPF unit is already ‘at an advanced stage of negotiations with a potential buyers [sic].’

Lomography announces 120 version of its B&W Potsdam 100 Kino Film stock

Lomography has announced it’s bringing its recently released black and white Potsdam 100 Kino film to 120 medium format rolls.

The 120 rolls, which will be cut from the same sheets as the 35mm stock, which itself is ‘cut from old stocks of a cinematic emulsion produced by a legendary German company.’ In Lomography’s own words, the ‘B&W 100 120 Potsdam Kino Film combines gorgeous antiquated aesthetics with the quality and professional capabilities of medium format photography.’

Below is a gallery of images taken with the 35mm variant of Potsdam Kino Film. Lomography notes ‘you can expect similar results’ from the 120 variety since it’s cut from the same jumbo.

The B&W 100 120 Potsdam Kino Film is available exclusively for pre-order on Lomography’s online shop for $ 8.90 a roll and is expected to hit Lomography Gallery Stores in May 2019.

Kodak Alaris to release Ektachrome 120 and sheet film this summer

Kodak Alaris has revealed plans to ship its revived Ektachrome product in 120 format and sheet film variants later this year. The revelation was made by Kodak Alaris UK Quality Manager Andy Church on the Sunny 16 podcast last week (approx. 16 minute mark), during which he stated that the new products may launch in around three months, depending on production.

Kodak began shipping its new Ektachrome E100 film product globally in September 2018, followed by the Ektachrome 7294 Reversal Film in Super 8 format in October. The company previously indicated it would likely launch the E100 product in 120 format and sheet sizes, something it is now actively working on due to the 35mm product’s success.

The company must deal with some ‘technical hurdles,’ according to Thomas J. Mooney, Kodak Alaris’s film capture business manager who spoke with Kosmo Foto. According to Mooney, ‘Based on the very favourable response to our 135 format launch of Ektachrome E100, we recognise there is definitely a market need/demand for these additional formats, and activity is now underway.’

Church breaks down the technical issue during the podcast, stating the 120 format and sheet film require ‘slight adjustments’ to the formula. The company has ‘started having some pilot coatings and as things progress we’re going towards a more production-scale coating,’ Church explained.

Assuming everything proceeds smoothly, Church estimated the products may arrive in around three months, while Mooney provided ‘mid-summer’ as the company’s estimation.

Lomography expands Kino Films line with new Potsdam 100 monochrome film

Lomography has expanded its Kino Films product line with its new Potsdam Kino 100 ISO 35mm black and white film. The new product joins the Berlin Kino 400 ISO B&W film Lomography introduced in November, its new Potsdam likewise inspired by the New German Cinema that experienced high popularity in 1960s Europe.

All of the maker’s Kino Films products are ‘extracted from rolls of cine film produced by a legendary German company that has been changing the face of cinema since the early 1900s,’ according to Lomography.

The triacetate-based Potsdam Kino Film is designed for scenes that require an attention to detail, as well as sunny environments. Resulting images have a fine grain structure coupled with ‘subtle contrast,’ making this what Lomography calls a ‘poetic film.’ The company promises Potsdam film development is ‘a breeze,’ but it has also launched the Lomography B&W Potsdam Kino Cookbook to help photographers get started with the film.

Shipping won’t begin until April or May 2019, but Lomography is offering preorders through its online shop now. Each pack contains a single roll with 36 exposures for $ 7.90; buyers can also get a 5-roll bundle for $ 39.50 and a bundle of 10 rolls for $ 79.

New ‘EZ’ E-6 film developer announced under Edwal brand

On the back of the re-introduction of some Kodak Ektachrome films a U.S. photographic company has announced it will begin sales of its own slide developing kits under the Edwal brand. Edwal has been associated with photo chemistry for some time, and US photographic distributor OmegaBrandess owns the rights to the name and intends to produce E-6 chemistry kits aimed at making transparency development easier for the home user.

The Edwal kits will contain developer, color developer and a single bleach/fix solution, and will be available in 1-quart/946ml and 1-gallon/3.8l sizes. The company claims the chemicals offer users some degree of flexibility with development times and the temperature of the solutions without adverse effects on the film.

Video: Five tips to keep in mind when buying used film cameras

YouTuber Casey Cavanaugh, whose work has been featured before on DPReview, has produced a handy video guide for those looking for buy their first film camera. Posted on his GxAce YouTube channel Casey runs through five top tips for checking over some of the essential functions of an old film body and lens to make sure it is going to be worth buying.

He shows how to check shutter speeds and ways to spot problems, as well as pointing out the importance of the integrity of the camera’s light seals. He also has useful information on examining the condition of a lens and discussing what is repairable and what should be avoided. Buyers should take a spare battery and a flash light/torch with them, Cavanaugh says, to ensure lenses are clean and that the camera is functioning normally.

If you have an eye on a second hand film body this might help you avoid buying a dud.

VSCO will retire desktop film emulation presets early next year

Image software company VSCO has announced plans to become a fully mobile company. This process will involve retiring its existing desktop presets on March 1, 2019, VSCO revealed on its website, leaving users with the VSCO mobile app, mobile tools and presets, and the annual $ 19.99 membership.

VSCO first launched in 2012 to offer film emulation presets on desktop. Soon after, the company launched a mobile app offering the film presets, which ultimately proved popular. VSCO has continued to offer both desktop and mobile products since then, but that will change early next year.

‘While we honor our origins at VSCO, we’re also always moving forward,’ the company says on its website. VSCO’s desktop presets remain available for purchase for now. A total of eight film emulation packs are available, including ‘Eclectic Films,’ ‘Instant Films,’ and ‘Modern Films.’ Each preset pack costs $ 59 USD and is available for Adobe Lightroom CC, Classic CC, 6, 5, and 4, as well as ACR for PS CS6 and CC.

Filmborn film camera app updated with new presets, iOS 12 support and bug fixes

Seattle-based Mastin Labs has released a large update for Filmborn, its camera app for iOS, adding additional film looks, free access to all current editing tools, support for iOS 12 and the three newest iPhone models and updates to the original film preset appearances.

Filmborn provides iPhone users with true-to-film presets that give images captured by the phone a realistic film appearance. Users are able to create up to three in-app camera kits containing customized specifications, as well as adjust exposure and white balance using gestures and curves using Filmborn’s Custom Curves tool. Other features includes last photo review, live film previews, and highlight clipping.

Version 1.4 update makes all of those tools free for users who purchase Filmborn. The app’s size and user interface have both been optimized, performance and responsiveness have been improved, and Mastin Labs has added haptic feedback for tool buttons when pressed in Camera view.

A number of bug fixes are included with this update, most notable being a fix for the iPhone X telephoto lens issue users previously experienced. Filmborn now offers a lens toggle under Camera view for dual-camera iPhone models, as well. The iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR are all now supported by the app.

The new preset packs available in Filmborn version 1.4.

In addition to the app update, Mastin Labs has also added three new film preset packs to Filmborn’s store: Kodak Everyday Original, Fujicolor Pushed, and Portra Pushed. Filmborn is available to purchase from the iOS App Store for $ 2.99. Additional preset packs are available as in-app purchases for $ 1.99.

Peel apart instant film returns in the form of ONE INSTANT

In 2016, Fujifilm announced it would no longer produce its FP-100C peel apart instant film, citing a dwindling lack of demand for the product. The discontinuation effectively ended the peel apart instant film market, but a new Kickstarter campaign aims to change that. Florian “Doc” Kaps, founder of The Impossible Project, has unveiled ONE INSTANT, a new peel apart instant film expected to launch in 2019.

Following Fujifilm’s FP-100C discontinuation, Kaps had pushed to save peel apart film via SuperSense, the company he founded after leaving The Impossible Project in 2013. The effort wasn’t successful at the time, but has ultimately proven fruitful more than two years later with the unveiling of ONE INSTANT.

As Kaps explains in the video above, ONE INSTANT is a re-invention of peel apart technology featuring single-shot instant film packaged in a paper cartridge. More than two years of research and development went into the innovation.

Kaps explains on the Kickstarter campaign:

In spring 2016 Fuji announced termination of the world’s last instant packfilm production line. Since that day – more than 2 years ago! – we have been desperately searching for “impossible” ways to save this iconic film material. Just like we successfully did with the legendary Polaroid film by purchasing the last original factory in 2008 and restarting production the classic way.

We failed! And honestly this was the best thing that could happen.

The single-shot ONE INSTANT Type 100 glossy color ISO 125 film is ‘based on a new, radical concept,’ the team explains. The product is compatible will all classic Type 100 packfilm cameras and is made with original Polaroid P7 material that was acquired by 20×24 Studio.

The team warns that ONE INSTANT “is truly really expensive to produce,” but they have vowed to bring down the cost when possible by optimizing production. The high cost is due to being mostly hand-made; the campaign explains how production takes place, saying:

ONE INSTANT is a tiny, bespoke, dream-come-true MANUFACTORY in Vienna. ONE INSTANT film editions will be produced WITHOUT the need of giant machines, huge factory spaces and large teams. Our all new manufactory will just consist of a small beautiful darkroom for all production steps that need darkness (mainly the insertion of the negative into the lightproof paper cartridge), a beautiful daylight assembly room and of course our beloved all analog printshop for all paper work, cartridge punching, producing all our hand-made packaging and communication materials.

Backers are offered multiple products to make a pledge for on the Kickstarter campaign, including various ONE INSTANT bundles that feature multiple packs, different box colors, and a Starter Kit that includes a mint condition Polaroid COLORPACK 2 camera. Film shipments to backers are expected to start in May 2019.

Review: Kodak Scanza film scanner is easy-to-use, but overpriced

The Kodak Scanza is a simple, non-professional film scanner. It wears the Kodak logo, but has no affiliation with Kodak Alaris, the company bringing back Kodak T-Max P3200 and Ektachrome.

What’s included

Opening the box you’re greeted with HDMI, USB and video out cables, an AC adapter, user manual, the scanner itself (in bubble wrap below), a toothbrush shaped surface cleaner and a handful of plastic film holders. Pretty much everything is plastic and feels a little cheap in its construction quality.

Format compatibility

In terms of film format flexibility, the Scanza is… okay. There’s no option for medium format, though you can scan 35mm, 110, and 126 formats as well as 8mm/Super 8. The 8mm/Super 8 option is misleading, though. This is not for scanning a whole reel of 8mm film, this is specifically for scanning individual frames of 8mm or Super 8 slides.

In use

The biggest thing the Scanza has going for it is ease-of-use. Even if you’ve never scanned film before, you can expect to be up and running in around 10 minutes.

To operate it, plug in the power (the scanner uses a widely available micro-USB to USB cable for power) either to an AC outlet or your computer, insert an SD card (this is where scans are saved), press the power button, select your film type, load the holder with your film, insert it and press the capture button. Done. Scanning takes only a couple of seconds per negative/slide.

Despite some gripes with the Scanza, the usability of this thing is awesome and for those intimidated by the more technical conundrums of photography/scanning, it is super freeing.

If you’re plugged into the wall and the 3.5″ LCD feels too small to view your images, don’t fear: In addition to the Micro-USB, you’ve got Video-out and HDMI-mini ports (cables included for both) so you can view your scans on a TV or monitor screen. This additional connectivity feels like a bit of an unnecessary feature, but I’m not going to count it against the Scanza because connecting it to a TV reminded me of using a slide projector and that is the most Kodak thing about this product.

The scanner is 14MP but offers a 22MP scan option that interpolates the images and ups the resolution from 4320×2880 pixels to 5728×3824 pixels. In use, we found the 22MP mode entirely unnecessary. There’s no option for TIFFs or DNG, only JPEG. (Prosumer scanners like the Nikon CoolScan 9000 and Epson V-series accommodate TIFF and DNG workflows, giving your film scans a lot of editing flexibility). Also, the scanning area ends up slightly cropping your photos, mostly horizontally – if you’re a perfectionist, this may bother you.

The biggest thing the Scanza has going for it is ease-of-use

When scanning you’ve got the option to perform color adjustments which includes Brightness, Red, Green, and Blue levels, all on an arbitrary scale of -3 to +3. In testing, just +1/-1 on any of these scales was too drastic a change to be used effectively. Unless your film is severely expired and has a significant color shift, I’d stay away from these settings to keep your scans as accurate as possible.

The scans in the gallery above are from a 35mm roll of Fujifilm Natura 1600. Below is an example of an image scanned using the Scanza (left) next to the same image scanned by a local photo lab here in Seattle (right). For what it’s worth, said lab charges $ 18 for processing and scanning a roll of 35mm color film.

Scan quality isn’t terrible, but a quick comparison to a professional lab scan shows the limits of the Scanza. For simply preserving memories, or scanning to share on social media, the Scanza’s quality should be good enough.

Bottom Line

This is not a bad product, it’s just an overpriced one for what it is. For similar cash, you can invest in a decent flatbed scanner with film trays – like the Epson V550 – which offers higher-quality scans and greater versatility, but at the cost of speed and ease-of-use.

For those simply wishing to painlessly make digital copies of years of photos, the Scanza is a decent option. But we have a hard time believing it is much better than this similar option with no Kodak label, priced half as much.

What we like:

What we don’t:

  • Similar products available for much less cash
  • Limited scanning resolution
  • Can only save JPEGs
  • Scanza sometimes crops images
  • No option for scanning medium format
