Fujifilm teases development of X-Pro3 with titanium body, mini rear LCD, hidden display and more

At its Fujifilm X Summit in Tokyo, Japan today, Fujifilm announced the development of its forthcoming X-Pro3 and teased several new and intriguing features the rangefinder-like mirrorless camera will have.

The first detail Fujifilm noted in its presentation is that the X-Pro3 will be built with a titanium body, which will come in three colors: Black, DURA Black and DURA Silver. The standard ‘Black’ version appears to be painted, while the ‘DURA’ versions are coated in some manner. Titanium is a challenging metal to work with, but more durable and lighter than other metal alloys traditionally used in camera bodies.

Fujifilm also talked about the improved hybrid viewfinder in the X-Pro3. Inside the viewfinder is a new electronic viewfinder (EVF) that will offer higher resolution, higher contrast, wider-gamut color space, improved brightness and a higher refresh rate. Fujifilm also says it’s managed to decrease distortion and improve the angle of view inside the viewfinder.

Note the ‘Provia’ film stock icon shown on the compact LCD on the rear of the camera. This film stock icon will stay there and is dynamic in that the ISO rating in the icon changes as you change it on the camera.

Further switching things up, Fujifilm announced that it will be repositioning the standard rear LCD in favor of a compact LCD that is comparable to the top LCD on the GFX cameras, except on the back of the camera. In a neat little trick that nostalgia-seeking photographers will love, this compact LCD can also be used to show the film simulation in use, a nod to the days where you’d rip off part of the film package and place it in the mount on film cameras.

You’ll note we said reposition because, as Fujifilm demonstrated, the display is still there, it’s just hidden. Now, the main rear display sits on the back of a hinged panel, meaning you have to flip it down to navigate the menu or review images/video. Fujifilm says the repositioning of the LCD was done to ‘keep photographers looking through the viewfinder’ rather than ‘chimping’ at the back of the camera.

It’s an unusual approach and, while we can see it appealing to waist-level street shooters, we’ll have to wait to see what it’s like for other types of photography. There have been a lot of calls for an articulated screen on the X-Pro and X-100 series cameras, but we’re not sure this solution will satisfy everyone, either. It will, at least, create a more obvious distinction between the X-Pro and X-T series: with the rangefinder-shaped model being the one you shoot through the viewfinder.

‘Classic Negative’ will be the 10th film simulation Fujifilm has released.

Lastly, as has been rumored, Fujifilm its 10th film simulation called ‘Classic Negative’ that will resemble the look of Fujicolor Superia.

Despite being billed as a ‘development’ presentation, Fujifilm spilled quite a few details about its upcoming X-Pro3 camera system. The camera will officially be announced on October 23rd. Wacom’s new $3,499 tablet features a 15.6″ 4K display, i7 Quad-Core processor

Graphics tablet manufacturer Wacom has announced the MobileStudio Pro 16, its latest pro-level graphics tablet.

The 15.6” tablet is powered by a dedicated 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7-8559U Quad-Core processor and Nvidia Quadra P1000 4GB GDDR5 GPU. It comes with a 512GB SSD and has 16GB of RAM. Together, these power a 3840 x 2160 UHD IPS display with 85% Adobe RGB gamut coverage that can run Windows 10 as a standalone device and works with Windows and macOS computers when attached.

The etched glass surface is designed to provide resistance similar to writing on a paper when used with the included Wacom Pro Pen 2, which is four times more sensitive with 8192 levels of pressure.

The MobileStudio Pro 16 features three Thunderbolt 3 ports but also includes Wi-Fi (802.11ac) and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity if you want to keep wires to a minimum. Wacom has also included two cameras: a 5-megapixel front-facing camera and an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, as well as a combo audio jack.

Other features include application-specific ExpressKeys, Radial Menus, a fingerprint sensor, multi-touch support and a stand so the tablet can be angled for more comfortable viewing and drawing. Wacom’s even included a built-in SD card reader for quickly transferring media to your computer through the Thunderbolt 3 port. The 4630 mAh lithium-polymer battery is rated for 5.5 hours of operation.

The MobileStudio Pro 16 is currently available to pre-order from Adorama and B&H for $ 3,499.

Asus takes on Apple’s Pro Display XDR with new 1600-nit HDR ProArt Display

Asus has shown a series of new ProArt products at the IFA show in Berlin including what it describes as ‘the world’s first HDR 1600 and 120Hz variable-refresh rate professional display.’ The ProArt Display PA32UCG is a 32in monitor with 4K UHD resolution and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and is aimed at those who need absolute color accuracy in standard and high dynamic range modes. The display is compatible with the Dolby Vision, Hybrid Log-Gamma and HDR10 HDR standards and uses over 1000 mini LED back lights to produce a maximum brightness of 1,600 nits.

This Asus display could be out before Apple’s Pro Display XDR goes on sale. Both displays are 32in and offer a maximum brightness of 1600 nits, HDR and 10-bit color, but Apple’s model has 6K resolution whereas this one is limited to 4K. The Asus ProArt Display, however, has a faster refresh rate than Apple’s 60Hz – and is likely to cost less. A stand is also included with Asus’ monitor.

The display has built-in hardware calibration and with 10-bit color it supports the DCI-P3, Adobe RGB, sRGB, Rec. 709 and Rec. 2020 color spaces. It offers 2x Thunderbolt ports as well as DisplayPort, 3x HDMI and a USB hub.

Asus also announced the ProArt StudioBook One, the first laptop to use the NVIDIA Quadro RTX 6000 graphics card. Asus describes as the computer as the world’s most graphically powerful laptop.’ An Intel i9 processor and new cooling system help with intensive video editing of up to 8K resolution. Asus has placed the CPU and GPU behind the display to avoid heat being trapped in the base, and has created a vent in the lid that allows two fans to draw in air to keep the main components cool.

The display in the laptop is a ProArt model, featuring 4K UHD resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate and the ability to reproduce 100% of the Adobe RGB color space.

Sony announces Xperia 5 with triple-cam setup, Eye AF and 6.1″ 21:9 CinemaWide display

Sony has announced the Xperia 5, the latest addition to its flagship smartphone lineup. The new phone brings technology from Sony’s Xperia 1 smartphone and puts them in a slightly more manageable size.

The Xperia 5 features a 21:9 CinemaWide 6.1-inch Full HD+ OLED display with BT.2020 color accuracy. The screen uses technologies from Sony’s Bravia TV systems to help bring High Dynamic Range (HDR) technologies to its latest smartphone. Another neat feature of the Xperia 5 is a new Creator mode, a feature inspired by Sony’s Master Series TV systems that adds 10-bit tonal gradation (8 bit display with 2 bit software smoothing) to the display, which makes it possible to support the ITU-R BT.2020 color space in addition to CDI-P3 and Illuminant D65.

Sony has also added Dolby Atmos surround sound technology to add ‘breathtaking realism’ to audio coming from the device, whether you’re using headphones or the built-in stereo speakers on the Xperia 5.

On the imaging front, the Xperia 5 uses a triple-camera setup with 12-megapixel sensors behind each of the three lenses: a 16mm, a 26mm and a 52mm (35mm equivalent). Sony doesn’t mention the apertures of the 16mm and 52mm lens but notes the main 26mm lens features an F1.6 aperture that works alongside the Dual Photo Diode image sensor with 1.5?m pixel pitch for better low-light capabilities. The imaging system uses a Sony Bionz X image processor for mobile as well as Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to get the most from the camera unit.

Sony has also brought its Eye AF technology to the Xperia 5, as well as continuous burst shooting up to 10 frames per second with Auto Focus and Auto Exposure calculations taking place at up to 30 frames per second.

Other features include Corning Gorilla Glass 6 on both the front and back of the device, USB PD charging, a 3140mAh battery, IP68/IP65 water resistance and Sony’s ‘smart connectivity’ function that uses Neural Network Libraries to analyze Wi-Fi and LTE signals to know when to switch from one to the other for optimal connectivity.

Apple used an unreleased 8K Canon cinema camera to show off its Mac Pro, Pro Display XDR

During the launch of Apple’s new hardware and software yesterday at the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2019 an unreleased 8K Canon video camera was used to capture high resolution footage to demonstrate the quality of the new Pro Display XDR. The video camera was mounted on a robotic arm and was feeding the Apple display with 4:4:4 ProRes 8K raw video via an Atomos Shogun, according to tech YouTuber Jonathan Morrison who live streamed from the event.

During his video the Apple rep refers to the camera on the robotic arm as an ‘unreleased 8K Canon camera’ and from the clips it is easy to see it is designed in the style of the company’s C series. Interestingly, it appears to be mounted with a Sigma 18-35mm T2 in the EF mount. The relevant portion of the video is at roughly the 10:55 mark in the video below:

Canon has featured 8K demonstration cameras and displays in the past at its Canon Expo events, but this is the first time it has allowed the technology to be shown outside of the ‘showcase’ environment, and in a body form that we would recognize.

Apple’s new Mac Pro and 32″ 6K Retina display are a match made in media heaven

Apple unveiled more than software at its World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2019 today. In addition to iOS 13, iPadOS and macOS Catalina, the Cupertino-based company also announced the Mac Pro and the Pro Display XDR.

Mac Pro

Six years after Apple announced its barely-upgradeable cylindrical Mac Pro, aptly dubbed the ‘trash can,’ Apple took WWDC 2019 as an opportunity to unveil its most powerful, modular Mac Pro to date.

While undoubtedly new, the overall design is reminiscent of Apple’s original Mac Pro, complete with the ‘cheese grater’ vents, which are specifically machined to allow maximum airflow through the tower. However, unlike the original Mac Pro, this modular monster can shed its shell to offer complete 360-degree access to the internals, which are mounted on what Apple calls a ‘stainless steel space frame’ that serves not only as the skeletal structure of the computer but also as the handles and feet when the aluminum enclosure is slipped over it.

At the core of the Mac Pro is Intel’s new Xeon processor with up to 28 cores, a dedicated 300W power supply and robust cooling that keeps to the computer running ‘unconstrained at full power at all times’ when required to do so. Apple has included eight PCI Express slots (four double-wide and four single-wide), twelve six-channel memory slots for a maximum 1.5TB of RAM and a slew of various USB ports, including two USB-A ports and two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports on the rear of the tower with two addition USB-C ports on the top of the case for easier access.

In addition to the tower itself, Apple has also created three modules that are specifically designed to interface with the Mac Pro: the MPX Module, the ‘Afterburner’ video card and an I/O module.

The MPX Module is a quad-wide PCIx card that houses two AMD Radeon Pro Vega 2 or Radeon Pro Vega 2 Duo GPUS, its own heat sink and a Thunderbolt 3 connector that plugs directly into the motherboard for maximum speed. If maxed out with the two Radeon Pro Vega 2 Duo cards, the MPX Module alone could provide up to 128GB of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) from the GPUs inside.

Apple’s ‘Afterburner’ module

Apple’s new ‘Afterburner’ is a hardware accelerator card with a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) or a Programmable Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). Apple claims the ‘Afterburner’ card can process up to 6.3 billion pixels per second and is capable of handling up to three streams of 8K ProRes RAW or 12 streams of 4K ProRes RAW at 30fps. As Apple puts it, ‘Proxy workflows, RIP.’ The last one is an I/O module that adds two additional USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 ports, two USB-A ports and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Apple has fitted the Mac Pro with a 1.4kW power supply and a specialized fan arrangement that actively cools the components using three fans at the front of the tower and a blower at the rear to push up to 300 cubic feet of air per minute through the 3D lattice grills on the front and rear of the tower.

The updated Mac Pro is set to launch this fall starting at $ 5,999, which will get you the eight core Intel Xeon CPU, Radeon Pro 580X GPU, 32GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Apple hasn’t specified what a fully maxed-out Mac Pro would cost, but based on a brief analysis from The Verge, it’s looking like it could top out at around $ 50,000 going by the current market price of the various components.

Pro Display XDR

Of course, what would a powerful desktop computer be without a beautiful screen to compose, create and review your work on it with? Years after leaving the display market, Apple is back—and it’s created a display that’s just as (if not more) crazy than its Mac Pro counterpart.

It’s called the Pro Display XDR and it’s a 32in 6K Retina (6016px x 3384px, 218ppi) HDR display that brings the best features of high-end reference monitors and manages to pack said features into a more compact, affordable (comparatively speaking) frame that offers the convenience of more traditional monitors.

The Pro Display XDR features 10-bit color depth, P3 wide color gamut, 576 zones of full-array local dimming and 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio on a screen that has sustained 1000-nits brightness (with the ability to achieve 1600-nits at its peak). This is done with the help of an in-factory calibration that custom defines algorithms to achieve the most accurate color rendering possible.

To keep the monitor cool, Apple took the same 3D grill from the Mac Pro and effectively turned the entire rear of the display into a giant heat sink for maximum heat dissipation.

Every Pro Display XDR comes with an ‘extremely low reflectivity’ screen, but Apple has also created a new matte option that uses ‘nano-texture glass’ to further scatter and light and reduce glare. In Apple’s own words:

‘Typical matte displays have a coating added to their surface that scatters light. However, these coatings lower contrast while producing unwanted haze and sparkle. The nano-texture on Pro Display XDR is actually etched into the glass at the nanometer level.’

Other features of the display include integrated reference modes—HDR video (P3-ST 2084), Digital Cinema (P3-DCI) and Photography (P3-D65)—and Apple’s True Tone technology to adjust the monitor depending on the ambient lighting conditions.

Apple has paired the Pro Display XDR with the optional Pro Stand, a dedicated stand for the display that uses a specialized hinge mechanism to make raising, lowering, tilting and rotating the screen easy enough to do with one hand. The monitor snaps on using a magnetic connection on the back and can easily be swapped out with a VESA mount adapter for more customized mounting options.

In case that new house wasn’t looking as enticing as you would hope, you could go ahead and drop what was going to be your downpayment on six Pro Display XDR monitors.

The Pro Display XDR relies on a Thunderbolt 3 cable to connect with the new Mac Pro, which can drive up to six of these things for a mind-numbing 120 million combined pixels.

The standard Pro Display XDR is expected to ship this fall for $ 4,999, with the nano-glass version costing $ 1,000 more at $ 5,999. The optional Pro Stand will set you back another $ 1,000, while the VESA mount adapter will be a slightly more reasonable $ 199.

While the pricing seems ridiculous, the display itself is on par—if not more capable—than many professional reference monitors that retail for five times the price. The stand feels like a bit of a money grab at $ 1,000, but the $ 199 VESA mount is a much more reasonable option and should yield more flexibility in the long run anyway.

Samsung patents wraparound phone display with unique photography features

Dutch website Let’s Go Digital has uncovered a Samsung patent that details a wraparound mobile phone display. Unlike the company’s folding phone, this recently approved patent shows a flexible display that wraps from the front of the phone up over the top and down partially across the back. Among other uses, the rear display could be used to provide an image preview to the photo’s subjects.

The patent describes multiple potential uses for the rear display, including as a camera preview. A translation of the section describing this potential use reads:

For example, at operation 1620, the electronic device may confirm to the user that he wants to selfie. When the self-portrait mode is selected, the control unit of the electronic device can activate the rear display provided in the same direction as the direction in which the camera is mounted. The preview image generated in operation 1660 may be displayed through the activated rear display.

Who needs a high-resolution front-facing camera when a secondary display can turn the main camera unit into a selfie cam?

Though the idea of a dual-display smartphone isn’t new, Samsung’s method — using a flexible OLED panel for a seamless wraparound screen — is unique. Of note, this arrangement could enable users to capture selfies using the device’s superior rear camera in lieu of the front-facing camera.

As with any patent, it’s possible Samsung may never bring a device featuring this technology to market.

The Xperia 1 is Sony’s first triple-cam phone and comes with a 21:9 display

Sony has unveiled the Xperia 1 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and the new flagship is the Japanese manufacturer’s first device to offer a triple-camera setup. The rear camera comes with three 12MP modules. The primary camera uses a 1/2.6” image sensor and fast F1.6 lens with OIS and Dual-Pixel autofocus. There are also a tele-module with 1/3.4″ sensor, F2.4 aperture and 52mm equivalent focal length, and a 16mm ultra-wide with 1/3.4″ sensor and F2.4 aperture.

Eye autofocus, which tracks the eyes of a human subject in the frame, has been ported from Sony’s stand-alone cameras and the 1 is also capable of recording Raw image files.

In video mode the camera records 4K HDR footage in a 21:9 cinema aspect ratio. The new Cinema Pro App, which is based on technologies from Sony’s pro video division, allows manual control over some video parameters, such as color depth, aperture and focus. 24 fps recording for a more cinema-like look is on board as well.

In line with the new video mode the 6.5-inch CinemaWide display comes with a 21:9 aspect ration and offers a 3,840 x 1,644 pixel resolution as well as HDR support. Stereo speakers are coupled with Dolby Atmos sound.

The Android OS is powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 855 chipset and 6GB of RAM. Either 64 or 128GB of built-in storage are expandable by up to 512GB via microSD card. The 3,330mAh battery and all other components are built into a IP68 waterproof body with Gorilla Glass 6 at front and back. No pricing information has been revealed yet.

Samsung Galaxy Fold comes with foldable display and six cameras

Samsung wasted no time unveiling the Galaxy Fold at its Unpacked event today – a foldable device with a 4.6″ display when folded, and 7.3″ display when unfolded. The device contains a total of six cameras – three on the back, two inside and one front-facing camera.

The company’s live presentation includes few camera details – but we’ve preliminarily gathered the following specs for the cameras included on the Galaxy Fold below (subject to change):

Multi-tasking is a big focus of the device, and Samsung demonstrated the device’s ability to maintain continuity within an app as you switch between displays, as well as its ability to run three apps on the larger screen simultaneously.

Black, silver, green or blue color choices with personalized hinge color options will be offered. The Galaxy Fold will start at a steep $ 1980.

Glyph launches new Atom NVMe SSD and Thunderbolt 3 dock with dual 4K display support

Glyph Production Technology has introduced its new Thunderbolt 3 Dock and Atom NVMe SSD products, enabling graphics professionals to expand the number of ports and storage available on their MacBook Pro or any other computer with Thunderbolt 3 support.

The new Glyph Thunderbolt 3 dock connects to a laptop via its USB-C Thunderbolt 3 port, enabling the user to both charge their device and transmit data using a single cable. The dock features an SD UHS-II card slot, a pair of USB 3.0 ports, as well as one USB-C 3.1 Gen2 port.

The model also offers separate audio jacks for microphone out and audio out, Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, and support for either one 5K display at 60Hz or two 4K displays at 60Hz. Users can also upgrade an NVMe SSD drive in a dedicated slot; the dock supports read and write speeds up to 1500MB/s.

Joining the dock is Glyph’s new Atom Pro NVMe SSD, a drive offered in capacities up to 2TB with read speeds up to 2800MB/s and write speeds up to 2400MB/s. According to Glyph, its new SSD is designed to handle demanding workflows, including projects involving 4K/8K video and VR. The drive’s case is MIL-Standard 810F rated to withstand exposure to sand, dust, shock, and vibration.

Glyph offers its products through a number of online retailers, including Filmtools, B&H Photo, and Adorama. The Thunderbolt 3 dock is available with 500GB – 2TB capacities starting at $ 299.95 USD, and the NVMe SSD is available in 1TB-2TB capacities starting at $ 499.95 USD.
