Book Review: The Practical Zone System for Film and Digital Photography

16 Oct

zonesystem.jpeg

First developed by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer, the Zone System is one of the most enduring methods for understanding – and mastering – exposure. In the fifth edition of his well-regarded book ‘The Practical Zone System for Film and Digital Photography’ Chris Johnson explains why the Zone System, developed as paradigm for film shooters, can also be easily applied in the digital age. Adam Koplan takes a look.

30 September, 2012 – The Digital Negative Book

16 Oct

Jeff Schewe has just published an important new book titled The Digital Negative. I have created a brief review (more like a plug) for my friend’s book. But, my bias aside, it really is that good, and it should find its way to your bookshelf tout suite.

Sony A99

I have started field testing the brand new Sony A99 full-frame 24MP camera. I will be shooting with it in Algonquin Park next week, and expect to have my review available some time the week after.

"Every time I go back to a module I had already seen, I learn additional things.  I have never seen tutorials that have the excellent mix of what the features are,
how to use them, enough of the under-the-hood information
and concepts so that I can utilize the features creatively and efficiently,
and just enough humor to keep the motivation
 level high.  Wow!"

Digital Is Not Forever

16 Oct

I’ve often toiled over the archivability of digital imagery and even wrote about a close call I had in losing a drive that archived some of my work, A Happy Ending to My Drive Crash. With some regularity I have thoughts revisiting the prospect that it’s just a matter of time before I have to endure this again and deal with the loss of a drive and even worse an irrecoverable loss of a drive. While there are certain precautions you can take to minimize such loss I can’t help but think that digital will always lack permanence.

Proponents of photographic prints are always keen to highlight that paper has been an archivable medium for thousands of years where as digital is a relatively new phenomenon of the last half century. Less electricity digital imagery is locked away on hard drives that then become perfect paper weights. The more I see others immerse themselves in digital photography the more I see society risking the loss of a significant portion of our visual history. Can we really trust digital to always be there? Enter a video short I saw the other day titled “Lost Memories”. It’s worthy of a watch…

LOST MEMORIES (French, English Subtitles) from Francois Ferracci on Vimeo.

So now that you’ve seen the video I ask you…. how permanent do you expect your digital imagery to be and what are you doing about it?

Nikon D7000 Digital SLR

13 Sep

www.amazon.com Nikon has released the D7000 mid-level digital SLR. Housed in a magnesium alloy body, the feature-rich camera incorporates a 16.2Mp CMOS sensor, faster ‘Expeed 2’-branded processor, 921k dot 3.0″ LCD and can record 1080p full HD movies. It features the company’s latest 39-point AF system with 3D tracking and 2016 pixel RGB metering sensor. It will start shipping with the 18-105mm VR kit lens from October 2010 at a retail price of 99.95. We’ve had a pre-production D7000 in the office for long enough for us to prepare an full hands-on preview looking at the camera, its features and where it’ll sit in the range.

We’ve been watching out for the D600 since images leaked a couple of months ago, and today it’s been made official: a full-frame DSLR that’s priced ever-so-slightly closer to the reach of mortals (read: “high-end enthusiasts”) who perhaps can’t claim everything off their tax. At just shy of 00 (€2400 in Europe), the 24-megapixel camera’s US list price is significantly lower than that of the 36-megapixel D800, and undercuts Canon’s rival EOS 5D Mark III and Sony’s brand new full-frame Alpha A99. What’s more, aside from the resolution, you’re getting something pretty close to the D800 — including a weather-sealed magnesium alloy build, fast Exspeed III processor, and AF that works down to f/8 — but here it’s all contained in a body that sheds a full 15 percent off the D800’s weight. It feels great to hold a full-frame DSLR like this, which is barely any heavier or more conspicuous than an APS-C shooter like the D7000. Nikon is also making a big deal out of the fact that the D600 handles wireless transfers and triggers using the new WU-1b widget, which is identical to the familiar WU-1a we reviewed on the D3200 except that it plugs into the camera’s USB port rather than the HDMI port. There’s an Android app to allow your mobile device to communicate with the camera, and an iOS app is set to land by the end of September. Read on a few more initial impressions and a quick look at the D600’s high-ISO performance. Although on paper the D600 has the same ISO rating (100 to

Sony NEX-VG10E Handycam Interchangeable Lens Digital HD Camcorder Unboxing & Review

21 Aug

Sony’s NEX-VG10 provides the options previously reserved for professional videographers to consumers. It is equipped with the same ExmorTM APS HD CMOS sensor used in Sony’s “NEX-5” and “NEX-3” digital cameras which is approximately 19.5 times bigger than what you would find in conventional camcorders. It has a powerful BIONZTM processor allowing photographers the ability to capture full 1920×1080/60i high definition video at up to 24Mbps for true cinematic Blu-ray quality. And most of you must ask that how much does it cost? I bought the Cam itself 00, the Video Light 0 & I also got a 16GB Memory Stick Pro Duo Mark 2 for 0 that records for 2 hours. Here’s the link of the Official video of the NEX-VG10 by Sony www.youtube.com

[MODIFIED] Buying a Digital Camera – What Does “Body Only” Mean?

07 Aug

When viewing digital camera listings for sale, why are some cameras listed as body only?

When comparing digital cameras and looking through sales ads, you may notice some cameras are listed with the phrase “body only”.

A “body only” camera means that the camera is most likely not a compact or prosumer camera but a higher-end digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera. Unlike other digital cameras, digital SLRs allow you to replace the lens, allowing for different degrees of wide-angle and telephoto shots (think skyline photos versus close-ups of birds high in trees). Plus, some lenses are ‘faster’ than others (ones with a larger aperture), allowing you to shoot even clearer photos in low-light conditions without necessarily using a stabilizing device such as a tripod (although these are always recommended when they can be used)….
