Spines of Steel: 12 Super Strong Exoskeleton-Inspired Designs

Durable and strong, protecting the soft flesh contained within them, exoskeletons in nature have inspired innovative designs for everything from wearable personal mobility vehicles to full-scale skyscrapers. In these 12 futuristic designs, exoskeletons expand the range of human movement, change the way architecture bears weight, shield vulnerable gadgets from damage and just plain look cool.

Human-Controlled Exoskeleton Anti-Robot

The developers of ‘Prosthesis’ call it an ‘anti-robot’ because it was built ‘by humans, for humans,’ meaning it’s not going to take off on its own, functioning more as an extension of the body. Dependent on the driver strapped into its cockpit, the vehicle stands 16 feet tall and runs like an animal. Says project leader Jonathan Tippett, “Prosthesis is neither a weapon, nor a tool. It is a sports machine, and the pilot is the athlete. It’s Formula One, meets the future.”

Exo Prosthetic Leg

Not only is this 3D-printed artificial limb by Adam Root faster and less expensive than conventional prosthetics, it’s way cooler looking. The technique uses a combination of 3D scanning, printing and modeling software to create a custom-fit prosthetic inspired by exoskeletons that’s essentially an accessory, “a customizable intimate addition to your body taking on your form.”

This smart protective phone case design absorbs impact without interfering too much with the visual profile of your phone – important for those Apple fans who love the slimline look of the iPhone. Exo by Lucidream snaps onto the back of a phone in seconds with a spring-damped impact absorption system and non-snagging bezels.

Lobster-Inspired, Robot-Created Pavilion

Researchers programmed a robot to wind carbon fiber into a full-scale pavilion inspired by a lobster exoskeleton. The resin-saturated glass and carbon fibers used to create it are based on research into the load-bearing efficiency of the layers of chitin in protein that make up a lobster shell. The glass fibers act as a framework while the carbon fibers take on most of the weight. The pavilion was wound around a steel frame, which was later removed.

Over the past half-century, the James Bond movie franchise has inspired countless suits, man caves and cheesy spy gadgets, but it has also led designers and architects to create some pretty incredible luxury yachts, jets, houses and accessories. There’s even a fan-designed laser watch that can light a match from across a room.

The luxury vehicle maker Aston Martin has been collaborating with the James Bond movie franchise for half a century, and recently unveiled its latest model, ‘DB10,’ for the upcoming ‘Spectre’ film. The British carmaker has designed a car for each of the 24 movies, but this one was developed under close watch of director Sam Mendes in order to create ‘Bond’s ultimate vehicle.’

McKenzie Strickland Associates essentially designed the Balnearn Boathouse, located on the shore of Loch Tay, after a James Bond movie marathon, envisioning a house that looks deceptively small and simple (if beautiful) from land, but boasting a fun secret. The home was built over an artificial cave that’s invisible from shore, so a speedboat can be driven in and tethered to the ceiling.

Futuristic Avro Business Jet by Design Q

Futuristic aircraft designer Design Q has proposed a luxurious jet called the Avro Business Jet, an airplane “that James Bond would have loved.” Named for the character of ‘Q,’ who designs all of the cool gadgets hidden in everyday objects in the films, the jet is designed “to appeal to dynamic and forward-thinking owners who live life in the fast lane; the interior is bristling with technology and gadgets that are discretely concealed in the hand-crafted furnishings but available at a moment’s notice.”

Odd Offices: 13 Wacky Outside-the-Box Workspace Designs

Unless you happen to work at Google, your conventional office space is going to seem awfully boring compared to the slides, disappearing desks, submarine-inspired meeting pods, turfed running tracks and other unusual design choices at these 13 highly creative workplaces.

Monolithic Chair-Free Office

There are no chairs to be found in this faceted office space full of sloping geometric surfaces – workers have to either stand, perch on benches or lounge. Not that they’re complaining. Developed by design studio RAAAF and visual artist Barbara Visser, the workplace design is entitled ‘The End of Sitting.’ “The installation’s various affordances solicit visitors to explore different standing positions in an experimental work landscape.”

Wave-Like ‘Superdesk’

One single desk surface weaves and undulates through the office for a digital creative industry like a ribbon, rising up in spots to create arched entrances to tucked-away work areas. The glossy, gleaming ‘Superdesk’ by Clive Wilkinson Architects seats all 125 employees of The Barbarian Group and transforms what would normally be considered furniture into architecture complete with roofs. The undersides of the desk offer storage, and occasionally reach heights that are tall enough to create private little alcoves.

Shipping Container Offices

Clive Wilkinson and Associates also created an incredible shipping container-based work environment for Pallotta Teamworks in a new and entirely empty 47,000-square-foot warehouse in Los Angeles. The firm had to do the project on half the usual budget for such a space, making it difficult to even fully air-condition it, so they came up with a creative solution: seven tented villages or ‘breathing islands’ that are climate-controlled while the rest of the space is not.

Disappearing Desks

There’s no danger of overworking yourself at Amsterdam design studio Hedergroen: once office hours are up, staff desks simply disappear. Computers, paperwork and other desktop items remain in place as the desks raise up to the ceiling on steel cables. When morning comes, they drop down again, resting on rolling cabinets for stability.
