Apple used an unreleased 8K Canon cinema camera to show off its Mac Pro, Pro Display XDR

During the launch of Apple’s new hardware and software yesterday at the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2019 an unreleased 8K Canon video camera was used to capture high resolution footage to demonstrate the quality of the new Pro Display XDR. The video camera was mounted on a robotic arm and was feeding the Apple display with 4:4:4 ProRes 8K raw video via an Atomos Shogun, according to tech YouTuber Jonathan Morrison who live streamed from the event.

During his video the Apple rep refers to the camera on the robotic arm as an ‘unreleased 8K Canon camera’ and from the clips it is easy to see it is designed in the style of the company’s C series. Interestingly, it appears to be mounted with a Sigma 18-35mm T2 in the EF mount. The relevant portion of the video is at roughly the 10:55 mark in the video below:

Canon has featured 8K demonstration cameras and displays in the past at its Canon Expo events, but this is the first time it has allowed the technology to be shown outside of the ‘showcase’ environment, and in a body form that we would recognize.

Panasonic’s upcoming Lumix DC-S1H cinema camera can capture 6K video

Panasonic has announced the development of its video-focused, full-frame Lumix DC-S1H mirrorless camera, which will be available in the third quarter of 2019 for $ 4000.

The S1H will be able to capture 6K/24p video from the 3:2 region of its sensor and 5.9K from the 16:9 area. The camera will also be capable of 10-bit 4K/60p recording. In addition, it will support multi-aspect recording, such as anamorphic 4:3. Regardless of what video setting you’re using, the S1H will be able to keep recording until the battery dies or your card fills up.

The S1H has been designed to produce video virtually identical to that of Panasonic’s pro-level VariCam cinema camera, through the use of V-Log and V-Gamut. The company claims that the S1H will match the VariCam in terms of both dynamic range (14+ stops) and color reproduction.

Panasonic says it plans to have ten L-mount lenses by the end of 2020 and, via EF and PL adapters, S1H users will be have access to more than 50 cinema lenses from its L-mount partners Sigma and Leica.

And that’s all we know about the S1H at this point. A prototype will be shown at the CineGear expo this weekend, and we have no doubt that Panasonic will drip out more information in the months to come.

Panasonic Announces the New LUMIX S1H Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera

With Cinema-Quality Video and the World’s First 6K/24p*1 Recording Capability

Newark, NJ (May 31, 2019) – Panasonic Corporation is proud to announce the newest addition to the LUMIX S series, the LUMIX S1H, a new Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera equipped with a full-frame image sensor. As the world’s first camera capable of video recording at 6K/24p *1 (3:2 aspect ratio), 5.9K/30p (16:9 aspect ratio), and 10-bit 60p 4K/C4K.*2 *3, it combines the video quality of a professional camera and the high mobility of a mirrorless camera. The LUMIX S1H will be released to world markets in fall 2019.

The main features of the new LUMIX S1H are as follows:

  1. High resolution up to 6K for multiple formats.

Maximizing the use of the pixels in the full-frame image sensor, the LUMIX S1H, as a digital camera, has achieved 6K/24p (3:2 aspect ratio) or 5.9K/30p (16:9 aspect ratio) video recording for the first time in the world.*1 It is also the world’s first full-frame digital interchangeable lens system camera*1 to enable 10-bit 60p 4K/C4K *2*3 video recording. It accommodates a variety of recording formats like 4:3 Anamorphic mode, to meet professional needs. Its high-resolution data can also be used to create 4K videos with higher image quality or to crop images in 4K.

  1. Rich gradation and a wide color space virtually equal to those of cinema cameras.

The LUMIX S1H features V-Log/V-Gamut with a wide dynamic range of 14+ stops, which are virtually the same as those of the Panasonic Cinema VariCam, allowing it to precisely capture everything from dark to bright areas. So much so, that the color and even the texture of human skin are faithfully reproduced. Designed under consistent color management, the S1H’s recorded footage is compatible with V-Log footage recorded by VariCam or the LUMIX GH5/GH5S.

In every S1H recording mode, video can be recorded non-stop under the certified operating temperature so the user can concentrate on shooting.

Blackmagic announces a new battery grip for its Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

Blackmagic Design has announced the impending arrival of the Pocket Camera Battery Grip, a new battery adapter for its Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (BMPCC4K) that dramatically increases the battery life and adds a bit of extra grip for when handholding the 4K camera.

The Pocket Camera Battery Grip features a carbon fiber design with non-slip hand grips and a slide out tray that trades the BMPCC4K’s usual LP-e6 battery for two L-series batteries, increasing the battery life to up to two hours of continuous shooting on a single charge. When a charge is needed, users can charge the batteries inside the grip using the camera’s 12V DC connection.

As with other battery grips, the Pocket Camera Battery Grip attaches to the bottom of the BMPCC4K and screws into the integrated tripod mount using a tightening dial. The LP-E6 battery door on the BMPCC4K even gets a cozy place to hide in the grip so it doesn’t get misplaced for when you need to switch back.

The Blackmagic Pocket Camera Battery Grip will be available in August 2019 and is currently available to pre-order at B&H for $ 245 USD.

Featuring a unique carbon fiber design, non-slip hand grips, and a slide out tray that holds 2 L-series batteries, the Pocket Camera Battery Grip also makes it easier to hold the camera on longer shoots. L-Series batteries are standard batteries used for a variety of professional lighting equipment, so they’re readily available. Canon launches its Sumire Prime collection with seven PL-mount cinema lenses

Canon has announced the Sumire Prime collection, a set of seven Canon cinema lenses that use the PL-mount — a first for Canon, who has previously only ever offered its cinema primes in its own EF-mount.

The Sumire Prime lens collection includes the 14mm T3.1 FP X, 20mm T1.5 FP X, 24mm T1.5 FP X, 35mm T1.5 FP X, 50mm T1.3 FP X, 85mm T1.3 FP X and 135mm T2.2 FP X. All of the lenses in the collection feature an 11-bladed iris, are color balanced across the lineup and have the same minimized focus breathing as Canon’s EF-mount cinema prime lenses.

Sumire — pronounced ‘soo-mee-ray’ — is a word of Japanese origin that is most often associated with ‘a floral gentleness and beauty,’ a characteristic Canon sees in its new lens collection.

Beyond a whole host of third-party full-frame and Super 35mm PL-mount cameras, the Sumire Prime lenses will work with Canon’s entire lineup of Cinema EOS full-frame and Super 35mm 4K cameras as well. In the event an EF-mount is needed, Canon is offering the option to swap the PL-mount for an EF-mount at its Canon Factory Service and Repair center, a process that can be reversed if needed.

All Sumire Prime lenses feature an 11-bladed iris and bright T-stops that allow users to capture images that feature a more natural circular-like bokeh from both maximum to minimum aperture. The use of an odd number of iris blades also helps to diffuse light rays and produce what is generally considered a more sought after, artistically pleasing and cinematic look with warmer colors. The lenses also achieve uniform color balance throughout the lineup, helping to reduce the need for post grading, even when a production is frequently changing lenses.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K gets Raw and URSA Mini 4.6K gets 2nd-gen update

Blackmagic has announced its new Camera 6.2 update, adding Blackmagic RAW codec support for the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. Upon updating, BMPCC 4K owners will be able to use the camera to record in Blackmagic RAW with 3:1, 5:1, 8:1, and 12:1 constant bit-rate encoding and constant quality Q0 and Q5 recording options.

Blackmagic RAW was introduced in September 2018, but was only available for the URSA Mini Pro at that time. The format’s arrival on BMPCC 4K gives users the option to prioritize image quality or file size, depending on need, including recording at the highest settings while keeping file size to a relative minimum.

According to the company, users can record more than two hours of footage in 4K ‘full cinematic quality’ via Blackmagic RAW on a 256GB SD UHS-II card. These same inexpensive cards can now also be used when recording 4K DCI images using Blackmagic RAW 12:1. On the flip side, Blackmagic has removed the CinemaDNG formats.

Joining the Blackmagic Camera 6.2 update is the URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2, a second-generation update to the URSA Mini Pro. The new G2 model offers ‘dramatic enhancement’ over the original, according to Blackmagic, bringing a new Super 35mm 4.6K sensor with 15 stops of dynamic range and all-new electronics for faster processing.

The URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 captures 4.6K images at up to 120fps and 1080p video at up to 300fps. It’s also capable of recording Blackmagic Raw. As with the first-generation URSA Mini Pro 4.6K, the G2 model features interchangeable lens mounts and ships standard with Canon’s EF mount. Blackmagic has also added a USB-C expansion port for recording to external disks. Full details can be found on Blackmagic’s website.

The Blackmagic Camera 6.2 update is available to download for free. The URSA Mini Pro G2 camera is now available to purchase for $ 5,995 USD from the company’s global resellers.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K update adds pixel remapping, better battery life, more

Blackmagic Design has released Blackmagic Cameras 6.1, the latest firmware for its Pocket Cinema Camera 4K camera. The update includes better audio recording, improved battery performance, a new pixel remapping feature and other updates.

On the audio front, Blackmagic has implemented a new audio processor that ‘analyzes incoming audio from the dual microphones on each side of the camera to dramatically lower the noise floor, resulting in quieter recordings than possible before.’ Audio latency has also been reduced for more accurate syncing with video footage and improved real-time monitoring.

A new in-camera calibration tool has also been added that lets users recalibrate pixels in the camera to fix brightness variations that can occur over time. ‘The new pixel calibration feature allows the camera to realign the light output of each pixel resulting in a smooth clean image under changing environmental conditions,’ says Blackmagic.

Other features and improvements include more accurate autofocus, a new media formatting interface designed to prevent accidental formats, 2:1 monitoring frame guides, and new power savings and efficiency fixes that Blackmagic claims improves battery life 10-15%.

Blackmagic Cameras 6.1 is available as a free download for existing Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K customers on Blackmagic Design’s website.

Major update adds new features for Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K including better audio recording and improved battery performance.

Fremont, California, USA – February 4, 2019 – Blackmagic Design today announced Blackmagic Cameras 6.1 which is a new update for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. This update adds quieter audio recording, a new pixel remapping feature, new 2:1 monitoring frame guides, improved battery performance and much more.

The new Blackmagic Cameras 6.1 significantly improves audio recording when using the built in microphones on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. The new processing now analyzes incoming audio from the dual microphones on each side of the camera to dramatically lower the noise floor, resulting in quieter recordings than possible before. In addition, latency has been reduced for audio monitoring, audio and video synchronization has been fine tuned, and the 3.5mm audio input selection interface is now more intuitive, making it faster to use.

Blackmagic Cameras 6.1 also improves auto focus performance. Auto focus now responds quicker and more accurately so that lens hunting is greatly reduced when the camera is locking on to the focal point. There’s also a new media formatting interface that helps prevent customers from accidentally formatting media cards. Once the camera is updated, customers will need to tap and hold the media format confirmation button for 3 seconds before a card will be erased and reformatted.

This update also includes a new in-camera calibration feature which allows customers to recalibrate pixels in the camera. Over time some pixels can change in brightness and create small variations across the sensor. The new pixel calibration feature allows the camera to realign the light output of each pixel resulting in a smooth clean image under changing environmental conditions. Blackmagic Camera 6.1 update also features 2:1 monitoring frame guides, which is another creative composition tool for filmmakers to frame shots. In addition, new power savings and efficiency enhancements improve battery runtime by 10-15% and give customers a more accurate indication of remaining battery power.

Sigma adds three new lenses to cinema range and promises LPL mount compatibility

Lens manufacturer Sigma has announced a trio of fast cinema lenses for full frame camera systems that will also be available in the ‘Large Positive Lock’ (LPL) mount for Arri’s large format camera system. The new models share the same T1.5 maximum aperture of the majority of the Sigma FF High Speed Prime cine lens range and will come in 28mm, 40mm and 105mm focal lengths.

This news brings the number of lenses in the company’s high speed full frame cinema lens system to 10, all of which share a T1.5 maximum aperture other than the 14mm T2. The new models will all have a 9-bladed iris and the 28mm and 40mm models will have a 82mm filter thread – the 105mm doesn’t have a thread at all. They will all be available in Canon EF, Sony E and PL mounts, and we should expect models in Arri’s LPL mount in ‘2019 or later’.

The first lens to arrive will be the 105mm T1.5, which will be available in October 2018 for £4749, or £5649 for the luminous version. Between then and the end of the year the 40mm will begin shipping, and those after the 28mm will have to wait until the early part of next year. No pricing has been released for the later two lenses. SIGMA CINE LENS New Product Update

The SIGMA Corporation is pleased to announce the development of three new SIGMA CINE lenses in the FF High Speed Prime Line: 28mm T1.5 FF, 40mm T1.5 FF and 105mm T1.5 FF. With these additions, the FF High Speed Prime Line will comprise of ten lenses covering 14mm to 135mm and T1.5 to T2, empowering cinematic expression to an even higher degree.

These new SIGMA CINE LENS models will be available for test shooting at the 2018 IBC Show to be held in Amsterdam between 14th to 18th September. Blackmagic releases first Pocket Cinema Camera 4K footage

Blackmagic Design has released three videos demonstrating the performance of its upcoming Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. It updates the Pocket Cinema Camera introduced in 2013, was revealed at NAB 2018 in April and is expected to launch next month.

Ahead of that launch, Blackmagic Design has published the videos “Nature” by Mark Wyatt, “Models Walking at Night” by John Brawley, and “Models Walking in Daylight” also by John Brawley, each showcasing the upcoming camera’s capabilities. This is the first time footage from the camera has been published.

Both Wyatt’s and Brawley’s experiences with the camera are provided in each video description. In describing his time with the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, Wyatt said:

I had the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K for only a few days, but overall I was really impressed by it. The weight of the camera is very liberating, especially when you are used to using larger camera systems. The screen is big and bright enough to use in daylight, which I found great for judging focus and exposure. And, the colors too on the screen, were also nicely represented. In fact, I would argue it is Blackmagic’s best screen yet.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K features a full size Four Thirds HDR sensor offering a native 4096 x 2160 resolution and 13 stops of dynamic range. The upgraded model also features dual native ISO, a USB-C expansion port with direct support for external storage drives, a new multi-function grip design, and much more.

RED simplifies cinema camera lineup, dramatically drops prices

If you’re in the market for a new RED camera, you’re in luck. The California-based cinema camera company has announced that it’s both simplifying its product lineup, and dropping prices on all of its cameras.

Starting today, RED’s product lineup has been pared down to just three cameras: the DSMC2 Monster, the DSMC2 Helium, and the DSMC2 Gemini. The prices are now $ 54,500, $ 24,500 and $ 19,500, respectively, which amounts to a savings of over $ 25,000 for the Monster and Helium, and a savings of more than $ 5K for the Gemini.

Each of the cameras are now available in aluminum alloy and the Helium is capable of being outfitted with RED’s Helium 8K S35 Monochrome sensor:

As for why this change is happening, RED says the change is being made to “[simplify] our portfolio.” The company says it “found efficiencies, and [we’re] passing along the benefits to our users.”

RED also notes that the names of cameras will be changed when upgraded to firmware v7.0.3 or later. The different naming scheme is seen in the below image.

For people who have already placed an order that hasn’t shipped for an older camera that’s no longer offered, RED will update the ordered camera to the DSMC2 Brain with the exact same sensor for no additional cost. There are also upgrade options available.
