Canon Rebel SL3 (250D), Sony a6400 and Fujifilm X-T30 buying guides updated

We’ve updated a trio of buying guides, adding our final thoughts about the Sony a6400 and Fujifilm X-T30, along with our initial impressions of Canon’s EOS Rebel SL3 (EOS 250D).

While neither the a6400 or X-T30 came out on top in the guides below, we think they’re both well worth considering. Since the SL3 is yet to be reviewed, it’s not eligible for an award.

Buying Guide: The best lenses for Fujifilm X-mount mirrorless cameras

Whether you’ve bought an inexpensive Fujifilm X-A5 with a kit lens, or a higher-end body like the X-T3, at some point you’re going to want some new glass. Whether you’re shooting portraits or want a versatile travel zoom, we’ve got you covered.

Before we go on, keep in mind that these lenses are for X-series cameras only. Fujifilm’s GFX medium format bodies use a different mount, which we’re not covering in this buying guide.


For each of the categories below the winner was the lens which we found to offer the best combination of quality and value. In most cases, we’ve also provided a more budget-friendly option, as well as a choice for those with more to spend.

Best kit lens replacement

Standard (kit) zooms are just what they sound like – versatile, general-purpose lenses that start with a fairly wide angle of view and allow you to zoom in to a focal length traditionally used for portraits.

Our pick: XF 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 R OIS LM

If your camera didn’t already come with it, we’d suggest upgrading to the excellent 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 OIS. The 18-55mm is a significant step up from Fujifilm’s XC 16-50mm and 15-45mm kit lenses, albeit not quite as wide as either.

XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR

It’s big, it’s heavy, it’s unstabilized, but more importantly, the 16-55mm F2.8 is optically excellent. It’s one of the most powerful ways to get the most out of your camera.

For more flexibility:
XF 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR

At time of publication, the 18-135mm is the best way of adding a lot more flexibility to your camera. Just bear in mind that it has a slightly slower aperture than the 18-55mm and doesn’t go any wider, so think carefully about what you’d gain.

Best prime / single focal length lens (all-around use)

Removing the complexity of a variable focal length often allows for prime lenses to be smaller, lighter and sharper, while letting more light through and being more useful in dimly lit situations.

For all-around use we’d recommend a semi-wide-angle lens that can lend itself to a range of subjects.

Our pick: XF 23mm F2 R WR

The 23mm F2 isn’t the sharpest lens in the Fujinon lineup, but it’s small, relatively fast and sensibly priced. It makes for a respectably small combination with most X-series cameras and provides decent low light performance and some control over depth-of-field. The equivalent focal length of 35mm makes this a perfect everyday lens for walk-around shooting.

Small/light/affordable:
XF 27mm F2.8

The 27mm lens offers a 40mm equiv. field-of-view, which can be great fun to shoot with. At F2.8 it’s not going to give much of a benefit in terms of light capture or depth-of-field compared with a kit zoom. Its major appeal is size: it’s convenient and discreet when paired with most X-series cameras.

Money no object:
XF 23mm F1.4 R

The Fujifilm 23mm F1.4 is optically excellent, making it a great do-everything prime. It’s not especially fast to focus but if you want the quality and improved low light performance it brings, then that’s the trade-off.

Best prime / single focal length lens (for portraits)

Prime lenses are just a single focal length; removing the complexity of a zoom often allows for these lenses to be smaller, lighter and sharper, while letting more light through and being more useful in dimly lit situations.

For portraits we’d recommend a mid-telephoto lens that lets you shoot head-and-shoulders shots from a comfortable working distance.

Our pick: XF 56mm F1.2 R

The 56mm F1.2 is designed to give the same angle-of-view and depth-of-field as a classic 85mm F1.8 lens does on full frame. It’s one of the slower-focusing lenses in the system, but it’s impressively sharp and well-matched for portrait shooting. There’s a more expensive ‘APD’ version if you need smoother background blur.

For a bit more breathing room:
XF 90mm F2 R LM WR

The 90mm F2 isn’t cheap, but it’s extremely sharp, is faster to focus than the 56mm and gives plenty of control over depth-of-field. It also gives a longer working distance, which some people will prefer.

The inexpensive option:
XF 50mm F2 R WR

The 50mm’s equivalent focal length of 75mm is a bit shorter than the 56mm’s, but the magnification difference is minimal in normal use and it’s much less expensive, faster to focus and still pleasantly sharp. It’s also small enough to carry with you at all times.

Best wide-angle zoom lens

Wide-angle lenses are often useful for taking photos of interiors, landscapes and architecture.

Our pick: XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS

The 10-24mm F4 is a mid-range stabilized zoom that extends out to a usefully-wide 15mm equivalent. It’s not cheap but the optical quality, solid build, constant aperture and inclusion of OIS help explain the price.

XF 8-16mm F2.8 R LM WR

If you need to go wider or brighter than the 10-24mm, there’s the 8-16mm F2.8. It’s well-corrected and generally superb optically. Just be aware: it’s big, heavy, and cannot accept screw-in filters.

Best telephoto zoom lens

Telephoto lenses start out being fairly zoomed-in, and allow you to zoom in even further so you can fill your frame with more distant subjects.

Our pick: XF 55-200mm F3.5-4.8 R LM OIS

Although the range makes it sound like a budget ‘two lens kit’ filler, the Fujinon 55-200mm is a well built, fast-to-focus mid-price option. We used it as our autofocus test lens for many years and were impressed with its performance.

XC 50-230mm F4.5-6.7 OIS II

The 50-230mm is a low-cost stabilized tele-zoom. Be aware of that F6.7 maximum aperture at the long end of the zoom: it’s not going to let in a lot of light, so your images are likely to be noisy in all but the best light.

Money no object:
XF 50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR

The 50-140mm F2.8 makes a lot more sense when you realize it covers roughly the same range as the classic 70-200mm sports lenses do on full-frame cameras. It’s fast, well-built and offers image stabilization, and is much easier to wield than most lenses with this focal length.

Best macro lens

Macro lenses allow you to focus very close to small subjects, which is handy for photographing flowers or bugs.

Our pick: XF 80mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro

The 80mm F2.8 Macro is sharp, stabilized and gives a useful working distance, meaning you’re not bearing-down on your subject. A flexible, attractive choice for close-up shooting.

Zeiss Touit 50mm F2.8M

We’ve been impressed by what we’ve seen of the Zeiss Touit series but they’re significantly more expensive than their Fujinon counterparts. We prefer the 50mm Macro to Fujifilm’s rather slow-to-focus 60mm F2.4 if you need something wider than the 80mm.

Best travel zoom lens

If you want a versatile lens that can handle most shooting situation, then consider a travel zoom. You still start out with a fairly wide field-of-view and can zoom in almost as much as many telephoto lenses. This is convenient, but these lenses tend to let less light through them, so aren’t as useful in dimly lit situations, and they may not always give you the sharpest results.

Our pick: XF 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR

The 18-135mm offers a flexible range for whatever you encounter while traveling, which is fortunate, since it’s essentially your only choice at present. It would be nice if it went a little wider, but it covers a hugely useful range, offers image stabilization and a weather-resistant design, making it a solid choice for traveling.

Worth waiting for?
XF 16-80mm F4 R OIS WR

If you haven’t got a specific trip already planned, it might be worth waiting for the forthcoming 16-80mm F4. Constant F4 may not sound too exciting on an APS-C camera but the 24-120mm equivalent range may prove more useful than the 27-203mm equiv reach of the 18-135, especially if the quality is better.

Waterproof buying guide updated for 2019

Fed up with winter and packing for a trip somewhere warm? We’ve updated our waterproof camera buying guide so you can be sure your scuba selfies look their best.

The Ricoh WG-50 and Fujifilm FinePix XP130 have been removed to make way for their successors – the WG-60 and XP140 – and Ricoh’s step-up WG-6 model has also been added. Our top recommendations, however, have not changed; we still think that the Olympus TG-5 is the best of the bunch.

Canon have released their new Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera, and not without some controversy. The Canon EOS RP is it’s entry-level mirrorless camera that comes in at US$ 1299.

Find out the reasons why some people won’t be buying this new camera in these great videos by Jared Polen, Matti Haapoja,and SLR Video Shooter.

The disappointments of Canon EOS RP for people shooting video:

While this is one of Canon’s lightest full-frame cameras, some people will be highly-disappointed to know that the camera has no 24p video capabilities in HD. It only offers it when shooting 4k. So for many photographers who also like to do video, this will be a major source of disappointment.

The other major downfall is when you use crop sensor lenses on this camera, you lose the ability to shoot in HD. What?!

So, unless Canon comes out with a firmware fix to these issues, you will likely want to choose an alternative camera for video.

However, If you are wanting to use this camera for photography, you will likely find this a great lightweight, affordable, full-frame, mirrorless camera.

So, will you be buying the Canon EOS RP, or will you stick to the Canon EOS R?

Video: Five tips to keep in mind when buying used film cameras

YouTuber Casey Cavanaugh, whose work has been featured before on DPReview, has produced a handy video guide for those looking for buy their first film camera. Posted on his GxAce YouTube channel Casey runs through five top tips for checking over some of the essential functions of an old film body and lens to make sure it is going to be worth buying.

He shows how to check shutter speeds and ways to spot problems, as well as pointing out the importance of the integrity of the camera’s light seals. He also has useful information on examining the condition of a lens and discussing what is repairable and what should be avoided. Buyers should take a spare battery and a flash light/torch with them, Cavanaugh says, to ensure lenses are clean and that the camera is functioning normally.

If you have an eye on a second hand film body this might help you avoid buying a dud.

Buying Guide: The best camera bargains of 2018

If you’re looking for a high-quality camera, you don’t need to spend a ton of cash, nor do you need to buy the latest and greatest new product on the market. If you’re willing to miss out on some features, you can save a lot of cash by picking up a last-generation model or shopping around for deals on refurbished or older, but still current, cameras.

In this buying guide we want to direct your attention to some great-value cameras, which are still available. We’ll start with the least expensive options and go up in price from there.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100
$ 449 MSRP, $ 369 street

While not as capable as later models, Sony’s original Cyber-shot RX100 is an inexpensive way to snag a genuinely compact camera with a 1″ sensor. It has a 28-100mm equivalent lens that will do well in low light at the wide end of the lens, but not-so-great at telephoto. You miss out on the faster lenses, electronic viewfinders and improvements in autofocus and JPEG image quality that arrive in the latest models.

The camera fits in a pocket with ease, though the body is slippery and some may find the controls a bit clunky. The RX100 has a 3″ non-touch LCD but lacks a viewfinder. Photo quality is excellent and the same can be said for its Full HD video. It focuses quickly and can shoot continuously at 10 fps. Wi-Fi is built-in for photo sharing.

Nikon D3400 w/18-55mm lens
$ 499 MSRP, $ 399 street

While it’s since been replaced by the D3500, the Nikon D3400 is essentially the same camera but in a slightly different (but still very compact) body. Like other Nikons, the D3400’s 24MP APS-C sensor has excellent resolution and dynamic range. Its autofocus system is dated and it can’t take many photos in a burst, so a sports camera it is not.

What makes the D3400 so appealing is that it’s great for beginners, with its ‘Guide mode’, selecting the correct settings for you based on use case, and tells you which of them were actually changed so you learn. The camera also features Full HD video capture (though AF is essentially unusable) and Bluetooth for easy photo sharing.

Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II
$ 529 MSRP, $ 399 street

The Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II is one of the cheapest and smallest compact cameras with 1″ sensor that you can buy. The larger-than-average sensor will produce better-looking images than your typical compact, though the slow-ish lens will reduce that advantage in low light.

The lens has a small 28-84mm equiv. focal range, which isn’t as versatile as most of its peers. Despite that, the G9 X II has a well-designed touch interface, snappy performance, Full HD video capture and the latest wireless features.

Canon EOS M100 w/15-45mm lens
$ 599 MSRP, $ 399 street

The Canon EOS M100 is one of least-expensive mirrorless cameras you’ll find. It’s packed with Canon’s latest features, including its excellent Dual Pixel autofocus system and also has a flip-up touchscreen display. It’s not as good at shooting action as the newer M50 model, which can also capture 4K video.

The M100 features Full HD video capture and Wi-Fi with Bluetooth. While there aren’t many native EF-M lenses available, the M100 is compatible with Canon’s enormous selection of EF and EF-S glass with an optional adapter.

Sony a5100 w/16-50mm lens
$ 549 MSRP, $ 449 street

It’s hard to believe but, five years after its introduction, Sony is still making its a5100 mirrorless camera. The compact Sony a5100 is a good choice for those on a tight budget seeking a point-and-shoot experience, but with interchangeable lenses. It hasn’t seen the improvements in video, autofocus or JPEG color that have arrived in newer Sonys, meaning you don’t get the excellent Eye AF feature.

The a5100 uses a 24MP APS-C-size sensor and has a hybrid AF system that’s still responsive today. There’s a selfie-friendly flip-up touchscreen LCD on the a5100, but no viewfinder. It can capture Full HD video and has Wi-Fi with apps you can download to the camera.

Sony a6000 w/16-50mm lens
$ 649 MSRP, $ 499 street

The Sony a6000 is one of the best-selling interchangeable lens cameras of all time, and for good reason. It has excellent image quality, a reliable autofocus system, 11 fps burst shooting and a sharp OLED viewfinder. The a6000 is targeted a bit more toward enthusiasts than the a5100, with dual control dials but (disappointingly) no touchscreen. It pre-dates features such as 4K video and Sony’s excellent Eye AF feature, and improvements in interface and JPEG color.

It captures Full HD video, offers Wi-Fi and can download feature-adding apps into the camera. It’s worth pointing out that Sony’s APS-C lens collection is relatively small and expensive compared to other mirrorless brands.


Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100
$ 699 MSRP, $ 499 street

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100 (TZ100 in some regions) is a compact camera with a 1″ sensor and 25-250mm equiv. lens. It fits easily in your pocket, making it an ideal camera for travel. Its lens has a relatively slow maximum aperture, so it won’t perform terribly well in low light, though it will still out-do compacts with smaller sensors. It doesn’t get the nicer JPEG colors of newer Panasonic models.

The ZS100 has a fixed touchscreen display and a ‘better than nothing’ electronic viewfinder. In addition to taking 4K video, the ZS100 also has genuinely useful features like ‘Post Focus’ and ‘4K Photo’. For those looking for a portable, versatile travel camera, the ZS100 is a bargain.


Fujifilm X-E3
$ 899 MSRP, $ 799 street (body only)

The Fujifilm X-E3 is a rangefinder-style mirrorless camera that produces excellent images straight out of the camera courtesy of its modern 24MP X-Trans APS-C sensor. Its well-built body has direct controls for shutter speed and exposure compensation, and most buttons are customizable.

A high-resolution EVF and touchscreen await users on the rear plate. It also offers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The X-E3 captures 4K video but not nearly to the high standard or newer models.While it doesn’t have a built-in flash, with a small external one included in the box. The excellent 18-55mm F2.8-4 lens adds just $ 300 to the cost of the camera and is well worth the money.

Nikon D7200
$ 1099 MSRP, $ 799 street (body only)

The Nikon D7200 is a midrange DSLR with a 24MP APS-C sensor that produces sharp images with excellent dynamic range and solid high ISO performance. It’s reasonably small and light and is sealed against the elements. The D7200 has a large optical viewfinder and a fixed 3.2″ (non-touch) LCD.

Autofocus performance is superb, whether you’re tracking subjects or shooting in low light. While the D7200 can record Full HD video, quality isn’t as good as other midrange cameras and autofocus is effectively unusable. The D7200 has built-in Wi-Fi, but the aging smartphone app is unreliable.

Sony a7 II
$ 1399 MSRP, $ 899 street (body only)

The Sony a7 II is a solid full-frame mirrorless camera that currently sells for a remarkably low price. It has built-in 5-axis image stabilization, a 24MP sensor, fast hybrid autofocus system and Full HD video capture. The camera has a relatively rugged, with some weather-sealing, high resolution EVF and tilting (non-touch) LCD. It misses out on the further improvements Sony has made in terms of JPEG color, autofocus and user interface in its latest models.

Photos have great resolution and excellent Raw dynamic range, though the a7 II struggles a bit at high ISOs. Some users might find the buttons and dials to be too small, so it’s worth trying one in person before you buy.

Nikon D750
$ 1999 MSRP, $ 1399 street (body only)

Despite being released way back in 2014, the D750 is still one of the most attractive full-frame DSLRs on the market and an incredible bargain as it approaches its fifth year of production. The D750’s 24MP sensor produces beautiful photos with low noise at high ISOs and plenty of dynamic range. Its autofocus system tracks subjects with ease, though the camera’s buffer fills quickly when shooting bursts.

The D750’s body is compact for a full-frame DSLR and it has a giant optical viewfinder, a 3.2″ tilting (non-touch) LCD, built-in flash, dual SD card slots and Wi-Fi. It can shoot good quality Full HD video, though autofocus performance in video and live view is for static subjects only. Battery life, on the other hand, is exceptional.
