California-based startup LucidVR recently showcased its consumer-level camera for creating virtual reality content, LucidCam. Startup InVisage has announced a smartphone sensor with global shutter for distortion-free video and greater dynamic range than its CMOS rivals. The Quantum13 is a 13MP sensor based on the company’s Quantum Film technology that moves away from silicon as the light-sensitive medium. The sensor, now available in small quantities for testing by smartphone makers, can also be built into a smaller package for slimmer smartphones. We spoke to CEO Jess Lee about the sensor and what it brings to the market.

The world’s first live tattoo projection mapping event turned tattoos from static works into performance art, creating dazzling animations from inked body artworks.
Filmed in Lisbon by Oskar & Gaspar, the above video highlights the infinite possibilities of this approach, from filling in details and colors to completing partial tattoos or even animating them in living color.
Like the future tattoos from William Gibson’s book The Peripheral, the result can seem like organic behavior, with faces coming to life and snakes slithering across a body’s surface.
Remarkably, the entire film was made without any post-production – what you see as the viewer of the short film above is exactly what the audience saw on the day of the event. We still may be a ways away from embedded nanobot tattoos, but when we get there, this will be an excellent source of inspiration for the tattoo artists of the future.

Google has announced Snapseed version 2.1 for Android, introducing the ability to edit Raw DNG files. While quite a few high-end Android smartphones have allowed Raw shooting for some time, editing those files hasn’t been easy. Fujifilm has added another lens to its X-mount, this one being a low-cost Fujinon XF 35mm F2 prime. This compact lens features a nearly silent internal AF system, 9-blade circular aperture, 2 ED elements, and is sealed against moisture and dust. Also announced is a 1.4x teleconverter, which is currently only compatible with the XF 50-140mm F2.8 zoom. It will, however, be compatible with future lenses, including the XF 100-400mm super telephoto lens expected next year. Read more.

Sony has announced an uncompressed Raw option for its forthcoming a7S II model and will offer firmware updates for some existing models, starting with the a7R II. Up to now, Sony’s cameras have only recorded compressed Raw files which can have a visual impact on some images. The company says the move comes in response to feedback from its users.

Toshiba has announced that it will bring its wireless transfer memory cards to Europe, after having sold them in the Japanese market since the beginning of summer. The Class 10 16GB SDHC card uses TransferJet technology to communicate with compatible devices or devices fitted with TransferJet adapters that are brought into close proximity with the card’s host.
