Sand Paintings: Temporary Street Art Will Blow (You) Away

sand painted sidewalk drawing

After 650 such works, it is perhaps no wonder that this artist generates each new sand painting spontaneously on the spot, letting the pattern evolve as he pours him efforts (and handfuls of sand) into each piece.

Joe Mangrum is a New York City painter, sculptor and all-around installation artist whose works of colorful, organic and fractal geometry often span as much as 15 or 20 feet in diameter.

Inspired by Celtic knots and Asian mandalas, he began creating these public pieces which, in turn, kept being swept up from the city streets. His story gained national attention in part due to tension with authorities, including a Parks Department in California.

Part of the beauty of his approach is its accessibility, both conceptually and physically – people can watch him work on a sidewalk for hours, and see the art evolve before their eyes.

He describes his work as “visual rebellion” against “the urban grid” – a sort of organic counterpoint to the strictly-defined and linear streets and sidewalks on which he works.

He writes of his strategy: “Each painting  is spontaneously improvised, using colorful sand, poured directly from my hand. In the process of creation, I whisk a mash-up of visual cues, inspired by ancient traditions synced up with a rhythm of animation.”

His free-style approach and Pop Art colors are inspired by everything from undersea creatures to carnivorous plants, botanical geometries and other cultures experience through international travels.

His pieces have be set indoors as well as outside, and in formal as well as informal contexts: “Mangrum’s  work has been exhibited worldwide. Creating over 650 public sand paintings since 2009. In 2012 he has been featured in  “Swept Away” at the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC, The Flag Art Foundation’s “Watch Your Step” exhibit and at The Corcoran Gallery Rotunda in Washington DC.  In 2003 Joe was awarded the Lorenzo de Medici Award at the Florence Biennale for his piece titled “Fragile” as it relates to economic structures. “

05PHOTOGRAPHER-popup.jpg

For nearly forty years, photographer D. James Dee has documented artwork and installations for seminal artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schanbel and prominent New York City galleries. He’s now closing up shop and faces the prospect of finding a home for roughly 250,000 color slides and negatives that chronicle the explosive growth of the Soho art scene of the 70s, 80s and 90s. So far he’s found no takers. Is this trove of recent art history headed for the dumpster? Click through to read more. (via The New York Times)

Come Photowalk in the Biggest Photowalk In History with My Pals Trey Ratcliff and Robert Scoble — We’re Giving Away Google Glass!

09 May

New Videocast Photo Talk Plus Premiers Live Tonight at 8PM PST

Next Tuesday evening, May 14th at 5:30pm, my good pals Trey Ratcliff, Robert Scoble and the awesome team at Google+ Photos will be joining me for an historic and truly epic photowalk in San Francisco. We think it will probably be the largest photowalk ever held in the history of photowalking — already almost 600 people have signed up! We will start the walk in Yerba Buena Gardens in downtown San Francisco.

Most exciting, one of our lucky photowalkers will win Google Glass. That’s right, a winner will be selected randomly — you must pre-register for the walk here and must be present at the end of the photowalk in person to win. We will go over the rules and details on how to win the Glass at the photowalk.

This is a free event open to everyone regardless of skill, experience, camera type, etc. Bring your Holga/Diana or your Canon 5D Mark III or your Rebel or your Android phone — or even that other phone that I can’t ever remember the name of ;)

We will be announcing more details between now and the event, but you won’t want to miss this fantastic San Francisco event. We will have a great afterparty too where we can all geek out about photography.

See you there!

Instagram backs away from controversial changes to terms of service

19 Dec

Istagram_logo.png

Instagram has backed away from controversial changes it planned to make to its terms of service. Co-founder Kevin Systrom has used the company blog to announce that the most sensitive phrase in the terms will be revised. The update would have given Instagram the right to sell user’s images to third parties without compensating them. Systrom says this was never the company’s intention. Instead, he says, wording will be developed to allow it to associate information such as users’ profile images with commercial postings (as Instagram’s owners, Facebook, do).

Bryce Bayer, inventer of Bayer Filter, passes away aged 83

22 Nov

Imaging Resource has published an obituary of Bryce Bayer, who passed away recently. Often called the ‘father of digital imaging’, former Kodak scientist Bryce Bayer invented and gave his name to the so-called ‘Bayer Filter’ – a mosaic pattern of red, green and blue filters which allows silicon sensors that are only sensitive to luminance to capture information about the color in a scene. Patented in 1976, the RGBG Bayer Filter has since become essentially ubiquitous, being used in virtually all digital imaging systems from medium-format backs to smartphones. Click through for a link to the obituary at www.imagingresource.com.

My 1st decent attempt at capturing a time lapse of the star filled night sky. To my surprise it captured more than what I hoped. particularly a nice frame of a shooting star amongst other anomalies. I was surprised to see how busy a small portion of the night sky can be! 30 second exposures were used to make up the time lapse. ISO 3200 Music composed and created in Sony Acid Music Studio 8.

Friday Night Lights Follow-Up: Don’t Try This at Home. Or Away.

29 Oct

Remember last month's post on lens-axis fill flashing high school football? I promised to get back with you after experimenting with lighting a game with off-camera flash—way off-camera.

I spent a decent amount of time figuring out how to approach it: what flash, what beam throw, light position, dealing with the coaches, remotes, fill light, ambient balance, yada yada.
Here's what happened. Read more »
