Panasonic’s versatile Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm F1.7 lens available in July

01 Jun

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_2239272758″,”galleryId”:”2239272758″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

Panasonic has announced that its Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm F1.7 ASPH lens – first teased at Photokina 2018 – will be available for purchase in July. Panasonic is marketing the 10-25mm, which in full-frame terms is equivalent to 20-50mm on a Micro Four Thirds body, as a single lens that covers five commonly used equivalent focal lengths: 20, 24, 28, 35 and 50mm.

The lens features a total of 17 elements, including aspherical, ED and UHR glass. The lens uses a stepping motor to provide fast, quiet focus. It has a nine-blade aperture and minimum focus distance of 28cm (11″). The lens isn’t as large or as heavy as one would expect, and is very well-built and fully weather-sealed. It’s the first Panasonic Micro Four Thirds lens with a focus clutch and a clickless aperture ring is also provided.

The 10-25mm was very much designed with video in mind, with minimal focus breathing, ‘seamless’ iris control for smooth exposure changes and linear focus response.

The Panasonic Leica DG 10-25mm F1.7 ASPH will be available in July for $ 1799/£1799.

Panasonic Introduces The World’s First* Standard Zoom Lens Achieving Full-range F1.7

LEICA DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm / F1.7 ASPH. (H-X1025)

*As a digital interchangeable lens for a mirrorless camera, as of May 31, 2019

Newark, NJ (May 31, 2019) – Panasonic is proud to introduce a new standard zoom digital interchangeable lens, the LEICA DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm / F1.7 ASPH.

(H-X1025), which boasts a large F1.7 aperture throughout the entire 20-50mm (35mm camera equivalent) zoom range and exceptionally high optical performance, clearing the stringent LEICA standards. The LEICA DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm / F1.7 ASPH. is suitable not only for stills shooting, but also for video recording, to satisfy both professional photographers and videographers.

The full-range F1.7 ASPH. high-speed aperture provides beautiful bokeh and high descriptiveness. Covering a focusing distance from wide angle to standard zoom range, the LEICA DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm / F1.7 ASPH. functions as a multiple fixed focal-length lens, providing the same or higher level of descriptiveness than a fixed focal-length lens can offer. It is suitable for a variety of daily shooting situations, from dynamic landscapes to portraits–even in low-lit scenes– eliminating the need to change lenses between variations in environment.

Comprising 17 elements in 12 groups, the lens system features three aspherical lenses and four ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lenses that effectively suppress the axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration of magnification. Spherical aberration and distortion are also corrected by the aspherical lenses for stunningly high resolution. The use of aspherical lenses coupled with the optimum design of the lens system, results in a compact size and light weight, while maintaining its outstanding optical performance.

Compatibility with a maximum 240-fps high-speed sensor drive realizes high-speed and high-precision auto focusing. Notably, the new lens excels in video recording performance. In addition to the silent operation achieved by the inner focus drive system, the stepless aperture ring and micro-step drive system in the aperture control section help the camera smoothly catch up to brightness changes when zooming or panning. The optical design achieves exceptional barycentric stability to minimize image shifts during zooming. Adoption of a focus clutch mechanism enables instant AF/MF switching and accurate manual focusing. The LEICA DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm / F1.7 ASPH. also excels in video recording performance with a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing, which was previously a fatal problem of all interchangeable lenses designed for still image photography.

The rugged dust/splash-resistant* design withstands use under harsh conditions even at -10 degrees Centigrade for high mobility. Nine blades give the aperture a rounded shape that produces an attractively smooth defocus effect in out-of-focus areas when shooting at larger aperture settings. Filter diameter is in 77mm. A highly reliable metal mount endures long time use.

Panasonic is committed to expanding the of Micro Four Thirds lineup through its LUMIX G series of cameras and lenses.

*Dust and Splash Resistant does not guarantee that damage will not occur if this lens is subjected to direct contact with dust and water.

The ‘world’s fastest’ 1TB microSDXC card is now available to purchase — for $449

17 May

Earlier this year, SanDisk announced the impending arrival of what it claims is the ‘world’s fastest’ 1TB microSD card. Now, the ridiculously dense memory card is available for purchase and, as you might expect, it doesn’t come cheap.

The 1TB SanDisk Extreme UHS-I microSDXC card features read speeds up to 160MBps and write speeds up to 90MBps (30MBps minimum). It’s rated as a Video Speed Class 30 (V30), UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) card with the SD Association’s A2 specification.

The card isn’t labeled as ruggedized, but it’s quite robust according to SanDisk’s specifications. According to the SanDisk, the card is shockproof, waterproof, X-Ray proof and capable of operating in temperatures between -25 to 85°C (-13 to 185°F).

The SanDisk 1TB Extreme UHS-I microSDXC card, which comes with an SD adapter, is currently available to pre-order on B&H for $ 449.99, although that appears to be a temporary discount of $ 25 through May 18, 2019.

Kosmo Foto launches Mono 120 black-and-white film, now available for pre-order

16 Feb

Kosmo Foto has launched pre-orders for its Mono film in 120 format, adding the new product alongside the 35mm version launched in 2017. According to the company, the first batch of Mono 120 has entered production and will be sold exclusively through the Kosmo Foto shop. Future batches of the film will be available through Kosmo’s retailers and distributors, as well.

In its announcement today, the company explained:

Mono has proven to be really popular with film photographers – it’s now stocked in photography shops all over the world, and been bought by photographers from Greenland to Greece and Costa Rica to the Czech Republic.

Not everyone, however, shoots 35mm film. The resurgence that film has enjoyed over the last few years has also seen many people shooting on medium format cameras from humble Holgas through to Hasselblads.

So Kosmo Foto is very pleased to be able to say that Kosmo Foto Mono 120 is now available to pre-order.

According to Kosmo Foto, Mono features a traditional black-and-white chemistry that can be developed using Tetanal, Rodinal, Perceptol, and similar formulations, but it can’t be developed by mini-labs with only C41 processing. Mono 120 is suitable for use in a variety of shooting conditions, including both sunny and overcast environments.

Kosmo Foto requires pre-order customers to purchase at least three, but no more than 10, rolls of Mono 120 when ordering. Each roll costs £4.50 / $ 5.80 and is available now through the Kosmo Foto store; the company expects its first batch to be ready for shipment in May.

“Tales by Light” season three is now available on Netflix

04 Jan

Netflix has recently released season three of its Tales by Light documentary series and reality show that follows photographers such as Darren Jew, Art Wolfe and Krystle Wright around the world, looking closely at their way of working, motivation for traveling and storytelling techniques.

Travel by Light is supported by Canon and National Geographic and is described on Netflix as a show in which ‘Photographers and filmmakers travel the world capturing indelible images of people, creatures and cultures from new, previously unseen angles.’

Season three is a little different to previous seasons in so far that it only features one or two photographers over the entire season instead of a new photographer each episode. You can get an idea of what Tales by Light is about by watching the trailer above. If you are in the US you can watch the full series on Netflix now. It seems viewers in other regions might have to wait a little longer for season three to arrive.

Luna Display, the dongle that turns your iPad into a second screen, now available online

12 Oct

Luna Display, the little hardware dongle that turns your iPad into a second display, is now available to consumers. Luna Display was developed by the makers of the Astropad, an iOS app that turns your iPad into a graphics tablet for the Mac, and started out as a crowdfunding project on Kickstarter.

Luna is available for USB-C or Mini DisplayPort and works through a Wi-Fi connection. The device lets you use your Mac directly from the iPad with full support for external keyboards, Apple Pencil and Apple touch interactions including pinching, panning and tapping.

According to its makers Luna Display can tap into the processing power of your Mac’s GPU, allowing for a virtually lag-free user experience and images without glitching, artifacts, or blurriness which purely software-based solutions are prone to.

Luna Display requires a Mac running macOS 10.11 El Capitan (or later). For optimal performance a MacBook Air (2012 and later), MacBook Pro (2012 and later), Mac mini (2012 and later), iMac (2012 and later) or Mac Pro (Late 2013) are recommended.

The iPad must run iOS 9.1 or newer and should be an iPad 2 (or later), any iPad Mini, or any iPad Pro.

Luna Display is now available for $ 79.99 on the Luna website where you’ll also find more information.
