2 August, 2013 – Fuji X-M1 Quick Look

02 Aug

Fuji continues to try and fill all of the available compact system camera market niches, this time at the low end with the Fujifilm X-M1. My Quick Look Review and some thoughts on the marketplace is now online.

"Having been to Antarctica with Michael and Kevin, I would say after having traveled the world and shot nearly my entire life as an exhibiting photographer,  it was one of my highlights in my life and I talk about it, all the time.  The images and experience of seeing something visionary and nearly extinct from the world, to see and experience the wildlife and scenery that does not fear humans is amazing.  The images I shot there won me two Smithsonian awards and nearly 18 other international awards". – Tim Wolcott

1 August, 2013 – Good News / Bad News

01 Aug

We normally don’t publish news reports, leaving that to those sites who feed us all a daily stream of new product announcements. But, there were so many interesting developments in the past few days that we thought it worth bringing them to your attention.

– Adobe has released updates to both Lightroom and Camera Raw. These incude bug fixes and support for several new cameras.

– Sigma has announced a new service that will allow owners of their latest series of lenses to change the lens’ camera mount when one changes systems. A cool and innovative service.

– The Swiss company Ilford Imaging has stated to it has been unsuccessful in finding new owners or investors, and has laid off 220 employees in prepartion for bankrupcy filing.

Cosina has announced that its Voigtländer Nokton 42.5mm F0.95 will be available in August, and will be priced at ¥123,900 in Japan. This ultra-fast short telephoto ‘portrait’ lens is for Micro Four Thirds cameras only, and will offer similar photographic characteristics to an 85mm F1.9 lens on full frame in terms of angle of view, depth of field control, and background blur. It has a 10-bladed diaphragm, and features manual focus and aperture operation – the latter can be made clickless for movie recording.

11 August, 2012 – Pimping Out the RX100

One thing that the amazing Sony RX100 needs to improve its handling is a grip. Richard Franiec makes some of the best small camera grips around, and I review his latest offering for the small Sony as well as another must-have accessory in Pimping Out Your RX100.

14 August, 2012 – Tokina 300mm Mirror Lens for MFT – A Hands-On Review

25 Aug

Mirror lenses have been around since the 1950’s. Some are better than others, but they never are really up to the quality of a good prime of comparable focal length, or even a decent zoom.

But their small size and comparative low cost keep them popular among some photographers, and their unique "drawing" ability appeals to some.

Lens maker Tokina had just released a 300mm F6.3 Macro Mirror lens for Micro Four Thirds, and I have just field tested this new lens on my Olympus OM-D E-M5. My review is now online.
