Sigma releases 24mm and 90mm lenses

Sigma has unveiled two powerful lenses for Sony E-mount and L-mount cameras: the 24mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary and the 90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary.

The lenses slot into Sigma’s “I” lineup, a series of glass featuring top-notch build quality, portable bodies (Sigma claims the I series is perfect for “everyday use”), and high-resolution imaging on par with even the most demanding mirrorless cameras. 

And the Sigma 24mm f/2 continues this I series tradition, offering outstanding build quality in a portable package. The lens is entirely metal, from the barrel and mount to the focus and aperture rings (and yes, the 24mm f/2 does sport a manual aperture ring, for photographers who prefer a more tactile, analogue method of shooting).

Sigma notes that the 24mm f/2 works well for “night sky photography, events, and interiors,” as well as “day-to-day use.” It certainly should perform well in low-light situations like indoor events (e.g., weddings) thanks to the wide f/2 maximum aperture, though Sigma might be selling the lens short; in addition to the aforementioned uses, I’d also peg the 24mm f/2 as an excellent street photography lens – it’s compact, fast, and sharp, even if its 24mm focal length is wider than the 35mm/50mm street photography standards – a capable landscape lens, especially for photographers looking to lighten their load, and an ideal travel lens.

The 24mm f/2 aims for optical perfection. Sigma explains that “lens resolution is extremely high and is uniform from the center to the periphery of the image,” while the lens features “the highest level of optical performance even at its maximum aperture of f/2.”

And the price is a quite reasonable $ 639 USD, ideal for budget-conscious photographers in need of a second or third lens.

The 90mm f/2.8 features a similar design – all metal, to match existing I-series lenses, plus a manual aperture ring, a compact build, and a “sleek, stylish finish.” At 90mm, I hadn’t expected the lens to be quite as travel-ready as its 24mm counterpart, yet the 2.4 inch (59.7 millimeter) barrel is ultra-slim and even pocketable.

Who should buy the 90mm f/2.8? Sigma advertises the lens as ideal “for portraits, close-ups, weddings, and events,” and I’d probably add product and still life photography to that list, thanks to the short telephoto focal length, not to mention the “exceptional resolving power that can keep up with the latest ultra-high-resolution cameras.” Plus, the lens offers a 1:5 magnification ratio; it’s no true macro lens, but can certainly get you a close perspective for detail shots.

Like the 24mm f/2, the 90mm f/2.8 sells for a very reasonable $ 639 USD. And both lenses should begin shipping at the end of September, so if you’re a Sony or L-mount shooter looking for a well-built, compact prime, I highly recommend you take a look.

Phase One announces $13K 90mm F5.6 lens for its XT Camera System

Phase One has announced the release of the Rodenstock 90mm F5.6 lens, the latest in its growing collection of glass for its XT Camera Systems.

One of the stand-out features of the XT-HR Digaron-W 90mm F5.6 is its 120mm image circle, which is large enough to account for the 24mm of shift the XT Camera System offers on both the X- and Y-axes for correcting perspective distortion.

The lens, which Phase One suggests is designed with landscape and architectural photography in mind, features an aperture range of F5.6-F22, uses an electro-magnetical shutter (1/1000th-60 min) rated for over 500,000 actuations, has a 72mm front filter thread and uses a five-blade aperture diaphragm. It measures in at 160mm (6.3”) long, 107mm (4.2”) wide and 90mm (3.5”) in diameter, with a weight of 1,200g (2.65lbs).

The MSRP of the Rodenstock XT-HR Digaron-W 90mm F5.6 is $ 12,990. It’s available now through authorized Phase One Partners.

Phase One is also teasing another Rodenstock lens, which it says will be over 100mm (<40-degree angle of view) and will be announced by the end of the year. Phase One says ‘several [optical designs] are under investigation, exploring the best balance of image circle, lens speed, size, weight, and complexity.’

Leica launches M10-P ‘Ghost Edition’ and new Summilux-M 90mm F1.5 ASPH lens

Leica has teamed up with New York-based horology company HODINKEE to launch the Leica M10-P ‘Ghost Edition’ camera styled after the vintage timepiece owned by Ben Clymer, founder and CEO of HODINKEE. The ‘Ghost Edition’ version of the M10-P includes a Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 ASPH lens with the same style.

The natural wear and tear on a wristwatch bezel results in a ‘ghosting’ aesthetic that inspired the M10-P ‘Ghost Edition’ design, according to Leica. This special edition camera doesn’t feature the company’s iconic red dot logo; its body and included lens sport a matte gray finish alongside silver and white accents. Gray cowhide leather and white enamel-filled engravings round out the ghosted aesthetic.

The Leica M10-P ‘Ghost Edition’ retains the same specs as the regular model. Leica is limiting this special edition to 250 camera sets globally with availability starting today. Each set features a serial number, a certificate of authenticity and a gray rope strap with black leather accents. The set is priced at $ 14,995 through HODINKEE.

Joining the special edition camera set is Leica’s new Summilux-M 90mm F1.5, an extremely fast telephoto prime lens designed for portrait photography. Leica describes this new lens, which has the longest focal length in the Summilux-M lineup, as offering ‘a breathtakingly shallow depth of field.’

The Summilux-M 90mm F1.5 lens features eight elements in six groups, including two aspherical elements made from specialized glass and a floating lens element. The company says that its lens design nearly eliminates the distortion and vignetting associated with fast lenses and that the lens hood helps cut down on reflections and unwanted light.

Leica customers familiar with the Noctilux-M 50mm F0.95 ASPH lens will find the new offering very similar in terms of design, build and depth of field, according to the company. The Summilux-M 90mm F1.5 ASPH lens is now available from Leica’s stores, boutiques and dealers for $ 12,995. The lens can be used with the Leica SL and SL2 cameras using the M-Adapter L.

Canon patent details schematics for a possible RF 90mm F2.8L IS Macro lens

A recently published patent from Canon details a set of optical formulas for what appears to be an RF 90mm F2.8L IS Macro lens.

Japanese Patent Application Number 2018-205435, first detailed by Northlight Images, is fairly standard as far as patents go, but there is one interesting element worth noting.

The image stabilization elements inside the lens — labelled L12 — are located within the first optical group towards the front of the lens. More often the image stabilization component is towards the center of the lens, but that doesn’t appear to be the case here.

This could be for a number of reasons, but the patent text specifically mentions that in order to get the most accurate image stabilization, larger optical components and accompanying motors are needed. As such, the larger front area of the lens makes more sense than the middle of the lens where the optics are more confined, especially with the aperture mechanism located there (represented by ‘SP’ in the illustrations).

It’s also worth noting that the focusing component of the lens is towards the rear of the lens. The patent text says this too is due to the larger focusing motor(s) needed, but it could also have an added benefit of creating a more balanced lens with the heavy image stabilization component towards the front of the lens. As Canon showed the world with its RF 35mm F1.8 IS STM lens, the RF mount makes it possible to put larger elements and more electronics towards the rear of the lens due to the larger mount size.

Leica announces APO-Summicron-SL 75mm and 90mm F2 lenses

Leica has announced a pair of short telephoto lenses for its SL full-frame mirrorless camera. (They’ll also work on the company’s crop-sensor ILCs, such as the TL and CL, with a 1.5x crop.)

The APO-Summicron-SL 75mm and 90mm F2 ASPH lenses feature an apochromatic design to reduce chromatic aberration, a single aspherical element and minimum focusing distances of 0.5 and 0.6 meters, respectively. Both lenses have a maximum magnification of 0.2X and have a ‘Dual Synchro Drive’ focusing system which can traverse the entire focal range in 250ms, according to Leica.

The 75mm and 90mm lenses have the exact same dimensions (73 x 102mm) and filter diameter (67mm) and nearly the same weight (700 vs 720 grams). Both are sealed against dust and moisture.

The new APO-Summicron-SL lenses will ship in February. The 75mm model will retail for $ 4750 while the 90mm will set you back $ 5150.

Thus, photographers get a lens that always creates images with beautifully strong contrast, where other lenses may suffer from distracting flares and ghosting effects that detract from the photo.

All glass elements in any optical imaging system, including camera lenses, can sometimes refract certain colors of light at different lengths. Thus, not all rays of light from a multi-colored subject are always focused at the same point – the result of this imperfection is chromatic aberration, also known as color fringing. In order to reduce chromatic aberration to a hardly perceptible minimum, both new Summicron-SL lenses are Apochromatic, or in short, APO, corrected, allowing photographers to capture photos in high contrast situations without a distracting purple or green outline along backlit subjects. Further supporting this optical achievement, most of the eleven elements of the optical system, one of which is aspherical, feature anomalous partial dispersion and are manufactured from sensitive and specially formulated, high-quality glass. Without all of these state-of-the-art lens corrections, images could suffer from fringing, flares, ghosting or distortion. These incredibly well-corrected glass optics are what make a Leica lens special and so crystal clear.

The APO-Summicron-SL 75 mm f/2 ASPH. and the APO-Summicron-SL 90 mm f/2 ASPH. will be available in February. Both can be purchased at Leica Stores, Boutiques and Dealers. In the second half of 2018, the SL-System will even further increase its prime lens arsenal with the launch of a Summicron-SL 35 mm f/2 ASPH. and APO-Summicron-SL 50 mm f/2 ASPH.

Leica’s ‘new’ Thambar-M 90mm F2.2 costs $325 per aperture blade

Hands-on with Leica’s new classic 90mm Thambar

Leica’s newest lens is actually one of its oldest. The Leica Thambar-M 90mm F2.2 is a (slightly) modernized recreation of a classic 1930s design, famed for decades thanks to its unique soft focus rendering for portraits. At $ 6500 it costs a pretty penny too, which for our own amusement we figured works out to $ 325 for each of its 20 aperture blades.

Cosmetically, the new Thambar is virtually identical to the original. The biggest difference is that now, it’s designed natively for the M-mount rather than the original screw-mount (and 6-bit coded). As such, it can be used on modern rangefinders (like the M10 pictured above) without adaptation.

Yes, that is a 20-bladed aperture. The optical construction of the new lens is the same as the original – four elements in three groups – but in a concession to the needs of 20th Century photographers, the elements are now single-coated.

There are two reasons the original Thambar is famed among Leica collectors. One is its scarcity, and the other is its unique rendering. ‘Soft-focus’ would be a bit of an oversimplification – its more of an ethereal glow. I can’t describe the appearance very well in words, but people who love it really love it. The effect can be varied by stopping down the aperture. There are some sample images at the end of this writeup.

Note the twin stepless aperture scales – that will be explained a minute.

The white aperture ring refers to the effective aperture when the special ‘center-spot’ filter is attached. This filter allows photographers to modify the unique rendition of the Thambar.

A dedicated screw-in hood can be reversed on the lens for storage. Without the hood or filter, the new Thambar weighs in at a respectable 500g (1.1lb) and is available now, for $ 6500.

Leica is resurrecting the soft-focus Thambar 90mm F2.2 portrait lens from 1935

Leica is getting into the lens resurrection game, announcing earlier today that it will bring back the Thambar-M 1:2.2/90: a portrait lens from 1935 that’s famous for exceptional spherical aberration that creates extremely soft images. The Thambar-M will be an accurate reproduction of the original lens, only this time around in the M mount instead of the L screw mount.

The lens features a 20-bladed iris that produces round, out-of-focus highlights, and only four elements arranged in three groups. Its softness comes about through uncorrected spherical aberrations that are more obvious when the lens is used wide open, and which can be emphasized via the use of an included centre spot filter that prevents axial light passing through the construction.

With the light from the centre of the lens blocked, the majority of image recording light comes from the edges where the aberration is at its strongest.

Without the centre spot filter the lens is still soft, but becomes sharper as the aperture is closed and the aberration subsides. The barrel of the Thambar has twin aperture markings that show in white the reduced aperture values when the spot filter is used, as well as the recommended range of apertures that can be used with the filter in place.

Originally made only in a run of 3,000 in 1935, this new version will be much more widely available starting mid-November, and will cost you £5095/$ 6495. For more information see the Leica website, or read this article on the Leica blog.

Leica Camera AG presents a modern renaissance of the classic lens – the Leica Thambar-M 1:2.2/90

A legend reborn: following the Leica Summaron-M 1:5.6/28, Leica Camera AG has further expanded its lens portfolio with the Thambar-M 1:2.2/90, the modern renaissance of another classic lens. Just like its namesake from 1935, the contemporary incarnation of the lens is distinguished by its characteristic soft-focus effect and unmistakeable bokeh. Its focal length of 90 mm is suitable for photography in a multitude of scenarios and is as good as predestined for capturing portraits with a uniquely aesthetic atmosphere that cannot be reproduced in digital postprocessing. The new Thambar-M is thus an exciting addition to the existing Leica M lens portfolio and brings photographers entirely new possibilities for creative composition.

The optical design of its ancestor remains almost unchanged in the new Thambar-M 1:2.2/90. It has therefore also inherited the characteristic properties of its predecessor. The only difference is that the four elements in three groups that make up the design have now been single-coated to protect the glass against environmental influences and surface corrosion. The 20 blades of its iris deliver a unique bokeh with perfectly round rendition of point light sources.

The soft look of the Thambar is the result of intentionally accepted under-correction of spherical aberration. This under-correction increases towards the edges of the optical system with the consequence that not only the depth of focus, but also the degree of softening can be precisely controlled by means of the stepless aperture setting. The effect is more pronounced as apertures increase, and is continually reduced as the lens is stopped down to smaller apertures.

The design of the original lens has been almost completely preserved in today’s Thambar-M 1:2.2/90. The black paint finish, the proportions of the lens and its aperture engravings in red and white correspond to the appearance of the original. In addition to this, slight modifications have been made that bring the lens into line with the current, minimalist design of modern M-Lenses. These include the knurling, the lettering and scales and the specific use of sharp edges and bevelling that underline the precision of the lens design.

The addition of a new incarnation of this classic lens to our selection of vintage lenses was one of our greatest wishes – to my great delight, this wish has now been fulfilled.’ emphasises Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, majority shareholder and chairman of the supervisory board of Leica Camera AG.

As is the case with all Leica lenses, the Leica Thambar-M 1:2.2/90 is also manufactured in strict compliance with the most stringent quality criteria. The use of only the best materials in its construction guarantee the familiar long working life of all Leica lenses. As was the case with the original lens, the lens hood, the ring of the centre-spot filter and both front and rear lens caps are made of metal. Even smallest details, like the felt lining of the lens hood and the front cap, contribute to the exceptional perceived quality of this lens. The design of the rigid lens keeper in ‘Vintage Brown’ leather is identical to that of the original from 80 years ago in almost every respect and, as in the past, the centre-spot filter can be safely and conveniently stowed away in its lid.

The Leica Thambar-M 1:2.2/90 will be on sale from mid-November 2017.
