High Tech to High Fashion: Upscale 3D-Printed Designs

Pioneers in 3D-printed fashion are showing off the capabilities of rapid-prototyping technology with dresses, hats, shoes, swimwear and jewelry. Machines layer buildable materials like nylon or steel according to computer-generated blueprints, eliminating the need for fabric and conventional soles and fasteners. The results are delicate and architectural, but surprisingly strong. Designs are custom-printed to the wearer’s exact dimensions for a perfect fit.

With 3D printing, shoes and garments can be printed to the exact size of the wearer, making uncomfortable-looking designs fit like a glove.

Created in collaboration with rapid prototyping studio Freedom of Creation, fashion designer Andreia Chaves’ Invisible Shoe features a 3D-printed base that is then covered in a mirrored shell. This produces an optical illusion effect, making the wearer’s feet seem to blend in with their surroundings.

The digitally-printed dresses are lightweight and flexible, amazingly detailed and yet easy to produce.

Biomimicry Shoe by Marieka Ratsma and Kostika Spaho

3D Printing Biomimicry Shoe

Look closely at the heel of the biomimicry shoe by Dutch fashioned designer Marieka Ratsma and American architect Kostika Spaho. It’s modeled on a bird skull. The hollow structure of the skull creates a high platform sole that is nevertheless lightweight, using less material than a solid structure.

Mobile 3D-Printed House Factory in a Shipping Container

Yet another candidate has entered the race for the world’s first 3D-printed house, with a mobile 3D printing factory in a shipping container that can produce the components on-site. Dutch studio DUS Architects plan to use the ‘KamerMaker‘ machine to print a full-size canal house in Amsterdam, one piece at a time. Work will start within the next six months.

The other two other concepts currently in the works, ProtoHouse 2.0 and Landscape House, also aim to get started on their own 3D houses by this summer.  What sets the DUS Architects concept apart is the fact that its printer is mobile. The KamerMaker is 3.5 meters high and easy to transport from one place to another.

The house, which will be built in a developing area along the Buiksloter-canal, will act as a hub for 3D printed architecture. DUS aims to print the entire facade this year, as well as the first room; other rooms will come later. Once complete, the first floor will become a ‘welcoming room.’ The entire construction site will be an event space to show off the capabilities of this technology.

The KamerMaker can print structures out of recyclable materials available on location, including biodegradable plastics, giving it great potential for emergency relief architecture. DUS plans to use polypropylene as well as plastic recycled on-site to build the facade and first floor of the house. Each room in the house will be dedicated to a certain type of research, including a ‘cook room’ where researchers will experiment with 3D printing in potato starch, and a ‘policy room’ where permits for printed structures will be discussed.

Factory to Self-Fabrication: 14 3D-Printed Design Objects

The world of desktop 3D printing has made factory-style fabrication possibilities available to artists and designers, who turn digital models into three-dimensional solid objects with successive layers of plastic or metal. Virtual computer-created blueprints are sliced into digital cross-sections for the machine, which lays down layers of liquid, powder or sheet material. Here are 14 fun examples of what people are coming up with, from practical objects like lamps and jar lids to toys and sculpture.

Designer Jessica Rosenkrantz of Nervous System created these 3D-printed forms resembling sea anemone, coral and barnacles, in neon shades of pink, blue, yellow and orange. ‘Each execution of the program, a new random double curved NURBS surface is created for the barnacles to grow on. Colours range from yellow to pink based on generation of the barnacle, yellow barnacles randomly subdivide into pinker and pinker ones. The pores will also be open to different degrees between the different executions of the program.’

Artist Josh Harker is known for intricate lacework skulls as well as realistic portraits and figures, and forensic art, all created using computer software and 3D printing technology. Harker holds the #1 and #4 most-funded sculpture projects in the history of crowdfunding site Kickstarter. “My intent is to explore and give form to the architecture of the imagination. By disengaging the conscious mind I am able to examine esoteric visions before they submit to a recognizable metaphor. I am then able to capture and refine them into the forms I command offering the opportunity to study their identity and structure.”

“Welcome to the future of toys,” say Go, Go Dynamo, the creators of the ModiBot, who provide plans for 3D printed toys like dinosaurs, knights and ninjas. “ModiBots are a creative framework for creating poseable characters, but it’s meant to be built upon like a skeleton,” toy designer Wayne Losey told Wired of the snap-to-build system. “We also want to put the ability to create ‘content’ into a user’s hands. ModiBot is ultimately a tool for that.”

Turn your digital music file into physical records using a technique developed by Amanda Ghassei. “I printed these records on a UV-cured resin printer called the Objet Connex500.  Like most 3D printers, the Objet creates an object by depositing material layer by layer until the final form is achieved.  This printer has incredibly high resolution: 600dpi in the x and y axes and 16 microns in the z axis, some of the highest resolution possible with 3D printing at the moment. ”

The Horse Marionette by Michaella Janse van Vuuren

All components of this incredible working horse marionette by artist Michaella Janse van Vuuren were 3D-printed. “The image of the horse itself was inspired by a drawing that I made during this time. The Horse Marionette has fully functional joints and movable wings. All the horse’s parts have been placed in the same digital file so no assembly is required afterwards. When strung up the horse comes to life.”

An unlikely and unique collaboration is in the works between an architect, an inventor and a mathematician-plus-artist to produce a first-of-its-kind printed house in a single shot using cutting-edge 3D construction technologies.

Janjaap Ruijssenaars of Universe Architecture has teamed up with, Enrico Dini, the developer of D-Shape, with help from Rinus Roelofs to design and implement a looping wonder home made of a kind of concrete. It will use sand as the primary aggregate, and be based on huge panels (nearly 20 by 30 feet) with infill.

This connected-panel system will be three-dimensionally complex – incredibly difficult for normal manufacturing processes, and consequently an amazing illustration of the potential of 3D printing for architectural applications. The Möbius strip shape, suggesting infinite possibility, seems an apt one for the project.
