Video Field Test: Tamron SP 15-30mm F2.8 Di VC USD

15 Apr

Tamron claims that its new SP 15-30mm F2.8 Di VC USD offers prime lens quality across its focal length range, paired with a fast maximum aperture and – uniquely in its class – an optical vibration compensation system. We’ve been impressed by how this wideangle zoom performs in our studio, but that’s only half the story. Our latest video field test follows DPReview technical editor Rishi Sanyal as he uses the Tamron 15-30mm to shoot architecture, cityscapes and waterfalls. Watch the video

Pentax K-S2 added to studio scene

15 Apr

Historically, Pentax’s entry- and mid-range DSLRs have managed to offer a number of features usually reserved for higher-end models, and the K-S2 is no exception. Omitting the blinking lights and unconventional mode dial placement of its K-S1 sibling, the K-S2 provides a 20MP APS-C sensor, fully articulated 3″ 921k-dot LCD, 100% coverage optical viewfinder, and built-in Wi-Fi with NFC. Take a look at how it performs against other cameras in its class. Read more

Devil’s Slide: Deserted Bay Area WWII Bunker Hovers in Midair

14 Apr

devil slide pillbox

Built on Devil’s Peak (along a promontory known as Devil’s Slide), this obsolete base end station was designed to spot, triangulate and radio in sightings of enemy ships approaching the San Francisco Bay.

Rounding the bend along California’s scenic coastal State Route 1 from either north or south, it is impossible to miss the incredible bunker, which appears to float over the earth around it. While the area is fenced off, a parking zone nearby is used by some explorers as a place from which to venture closer to the structure, located just south of Pacifica and past a hillside highway tunnel.

Though this is neither safe nor recommended, it is also possible to climb into the viewing slot on the first level then walk the stairs to the top – unofficially: the view is incredible. Meanwhile, the edges of the bunker have turned from supports to supported, cantilevered precariously over their surroundings, allowing you to walk up and sit under thousands of pounds of reinforced concrete.

While it looks like the work of nature, the apparent erosion surrounding the lone structure is reportedly a man-made effort designed to pave the way for further development, presumably by the military. At the same time, natural causes would not be too much of a surprise or stretch, considering that this section of highway has been known to close due to everything from earthquakes to landslides – the next disaster very well might take this abandoned building with it. The land and bunker are meanwhile owned by a private party and officially off limits (though with limited fencing).

With Spring Showers Comes Lightning Photos

14 Apr

Storm season is upon us which means it’s the perfect time to try for some shocking shots.

Lightning photos are hard to perfect but super fun to attempt. Here’s a few tips for getting started.

First and most importantly: Stay safe. Distance is your best friend – use a telephoto lens when possible. Keep your gear dry by setting up under a covered patio or deck.

Second: Long exposures mean you need a tripod, or duct tape and a rock, whatever it takes to get that stability!

Third of all: Every storm is different, so your settings will vary slightly each time. Try these to start with and play around from there –

  • ISO 100
  • f/7 aperture
  • 30 second exposure

For a more in depth tutorial, check out Richard Gottardo’s excellent write-up here covering everything from storm searching to stacking images in post.

And you thought puddle jumping was the best part of a storm…

Leere Orte und ein Gefühl von Traurigkeit

14 Apr

Eine Frau hat die Augen geschlossen.

Ein Beitrag von: Silke Seybold

Es duftet nach altem Motorenöl. Doch die Maschinen stehen schon lange still. Der Staub sammelt sich in den Ecken und ein Gefühl von Ruhe fächert sich über die verlassenen Orte aus, die Silke Seybold über Jahre hinweg besucht und fotografiert hat.

Panasonic DMC-GH4 firmware v2.2 brings 4:3 shooting for anamorphic shooters

14 Apr

Panasonic has announced firmware v2.2 for the GH4 to make it easier to use anamorphic lenses with the camera. The new anamorphic mode allows the camera to capture video from a 4:3 aspect ratio chunk from the middle of the sensor to match the projection of specialist lenses, allowing genuine anamorphic capture, rather than digital simulation of the look.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 camera review

14 Apr

The Note 4 is the latest iteration of Samsung’s top-end line of so-called ‘phablets’. In terms of design the new model is very close to its predecessor, the Galaxy Note 3, but under the hood, things have been upgraded significantly. A 1/2.6-inch 16MP BSI CMOS image sensor and F2.2 maximum aperture are shared with the Galaxy S5 but the Note 4 has gained an optical image stabilization system which makes it the first Samsung smartphone with this feature. Read our full review at connect.dpreview.com

Photo History Club: 7 Famous Photographers You Should Know

14 Apr

I’ve said here before that exploring photographic history is a great way to kick-start your creative engine. It’s often said that there’s nothing new under the sun, but for every photographic approach and philosophy you can find, someone somewhere did it first. Studying what’s come before you can often reveal something new ahead of you. So with that sentiment in mind, I Continue Reading
