A smartphone is typically the one camera you always carry with you but its tiny sensors often struggle in low light which makes a tripod a useful accessory. The Joby Grip Tight Micro Stand is a combined mini-tripod and phone holder that is foldable and so small that it fits in any pocket or can even be used as a key fob which makes it an ideal companion for your smartphone. We’ve tried it out for you.

01 May

shared:kodakextColor.jpg

Kodak hopes to sell its consumer film and processing kiosk businesses to its UK pension scheme, to allow it to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The move pays off the company’s biggest debt – an estimated $ 2.8bn it was expected to have to pay to the pension scheme over the coming years. The pension scheme is reported to be paying $ 650 for the Personalized Imaging and Document Imaging units the company announced it would sell last August.

High Tech to High Fashion: Upscale 3D-Printed Designs

01 May

[ By Steph in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

3D Printed Fashion main

Pioneers in 3D-printed fashion are showing off the capabilities of rapid-prototyping technology with dresses, hats, shoes, swimwear and jewelry. Machines layer buildable materials like nylon or steel according to computer-generated blueprints, eliminating the need for fabric and conventional soles and fasteners. The results are delicate and architectural, but surprisingly strong. Designs are custom-printed to the wearer’s exact dimensions for a perfect fit.

Every single piece of this bikini is 3D-printed including closures, and snap together without any sewing. Order through the Continuum Fashion shop.

The Exoskeleton collection by Janina Alleyne is a futuristic, vaguely alien-looking series of footwear inspired by the structure and silhouettes of marine invertebrates and insects. With 3D printing, shoes and garments can be printed to the exact size of the wearer, making uncomfortable-looking designs fit like a glove.

Created in collaboration with rapid prototyping studio Freedom of Creation, fashion designer Andreia Chaves’ Invisible Shoe features a 3D-printed base that is then covered in a mirrored shell. This produces an optical illusion effect, making the wearer’s feet seem to blend in with their surroundings.

Look closely at the heel of the biomimicry shoe by Dutch fashioned designer Marieka Ratsma and American architect Kostika Spaho. It’s modeled on a bird skull. The hollow structure of the skull creates a high platform sole that is nevertheless lightweight, using less material than a solid structure.

1 April, 2013 – Leica M(240) First Impressions

01 May

Last week I had an opportunity to shoot with the new Leica M for the first time along with with Sean Reid of Reidreviews and our own Mark Dubovoy. We did photography, talked equipment and did a lengthly video round table discussions about the current state of Leica M cameras and the whole non-reflex camera environment.

The video will appear soon, but today I am publishing my Leica M First Impressions Report and Sean’s write-up on our get-together.

"Every time I go back to a module I had already seen, I learn additional things.  I have never seen tutorials that have the excellent mix of what the features are,
how to use them, enough of the under-the-hood information
and concepts so that I can utilize the features creatively and efficiently,
and just enough humor to keep the motivation level high.  Wow!"
