Computer History Museum shares original Adobe Photoshop source code

The source code of the original version of Adobe Photoshop has been made available by The Computer History Museum, based in California. Photoshop started off in the 1980s as a program called ‘Display’ written by Thomas Knoll, before being renamed ‘Photoshop’ in 1990 – the year that the first version of the software shipped to customers. The download, which is available for non-commercial use with the permission of Adobe, consists of around 128,000 lines of code. buy it here: www.amazon.com Although ergonomically, the D7000 is a very close match for the D90, its overall ‘feel’ is considerably more serious, thanks to a magnesium alloy body shell and slightly thicker rubber coating on the hand grip and rear of the camera. At 16.2MP the D7000 offers the second highest resolution of any Nikon DSLR, behind only the 24Mp D3X. All of these pixels are packed onto a newly developed CMOS sensor, which offers a ‘standard’ ISO span of 100-6400, expandable up to the equivalent of ISO 25600. The new camera boasts a 39-point AF array with 9 cross-type AF points and works in collaboration with a new 2016-pixel RGB metering sensor to allow 3D AF tracking. Other changes include the same combined live view/movie switch control as the 3100, and a significantly upgraded movie specification, up to ‘full HD’ – 1920×1080 resolution at 24fps. The Nikon D7000 produces high quality output in almost any shooting situation. Default JPEGs are clean of artifacts and with natural colors and tonality. At a pixel level low ISO images are very slightly soft but still show very good detail which can be further increased by shooting in RAW. There is one negative though: in bright, high-contrast conditions the camera has a tendency to overexpose – unfortunately by quite a large degree.

5 Fail Proof Portrait Poses

In this post Gina Milicia – author of our brand new eBook “Portraits: Making the Shot” shares 10 tips on directing a portrait shoot like a Pro.

When I was starting out as a portrait photographer, I began creating a visual diary and mimicking the images I loved. Some people will tell you that it’s wrong to copy but for centuries, every generation of artist has imitated the masters before them. Once they’ve mastered the technique they move on to develop their own style.

Photography is no different.

You don’t have to come up with a thousand new ways to pose someone. Use the ways that work for you and your model.

Here are 5 of my “go to” poses

1. The Controposto (or S) pose

This is one of my go-to poses. It’s a great starting point for both men and women because it’s flattering for almost any body shape and doesn’t require any special props or locations.

2. Lean on me (or working the wall)

This is a particularly good pose for people who are really awkward. Some people have a real awareness of their body and they will always look comfortable, but it’s not as easy as that for others. Simply giving your model something to do, like leaning against the wall, can be enough to relax them.

3. Jump in my Car

A car is another great prop. On a bright sunny day, the shade of a car will give you great light and again, your model will have something to do to help them relax.

4. A leap of Faith

As with many of the other poses mentioned, if someone is awkward simply standing, giving them something to do can really bring the photo to life.

It’s not always easy but you can introduce some life and movement into the person and their clothes by getting them to jump or leap.

5. Walk the line

The walking shot is great if you want to capture groups, couples and singles.
I like to shoot from a low angle with a fast shutter speed to freeze motion.

Weather: Weekly Photography Challenge

Twelve Days of Christmas (Day 11) ** EXPLORE No. 1 ** Earlier in the week we featured an image set that contained 25 images that all had ‘snow’ as a feature. So today we thought it might be fun to do a ‘weather’ challenge as our weekly theme.

Your challenge is to take and share an image on the theme of weather.

As we have a global audience this should produce images with a real variety of types of weather. Aussie – we want you to show the world what summer is like for you right now. North Americans and Europeans – show us how winter is going?

We want to see rain, hail, snow, sun, storms, wind… you name it – we’d love to see some images that attempt to capture it. Feel free to tackle the topic with what ever type of shot you like, landscape, portrait, colour, black and white… anything you like – be creative!

Looking for inspiration – in addition to the Snow image collection we also have a Rain image collection.

Once you’ve taken and selected your best WEATHER shot upload it to your favourite photo sharing site and either share a link to it or – embed it in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSCUTE to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

World Press Photo announces 2013 contest winners

Swedish photographer Paul Hansen has won the World Press Photo 2013 award for his picture of a Palestinian family carrying two children who were killed in an Israeli missile strike to their funeral. The World Press Photo Contest 2013 also awarded prizes in eight other categories ranging from Sports to Portraits. Some of these images may be familiar from news coverage throughout the year, but they make a compelling and inspiring reminder of the exceptional level of photojournalism across the world. L’Officiel Ukraine + Bonus Workshop Day!

I say it so many times that I’m beginning to annoy even myself! But I can’t empathize how important it is to work with really talented people. The success of your shoot depends on the talent of your team members. And their ability to work with each other. That’s why when the opportunity came up to work with Donald Lawrence again, I jumped on it. If you remember my “Huskey Shoot” (which we have affectionately begun calling it), you’ll remember that Donald Lawrence styled the 4 Asian girls on that editorial. The shoot was so good, we featured it on our DVD! And….on a side note, that editorial was chosen as one of the top 10 Asian stories of 2011, which made us very proud! At any rate, I loved working with Donald on that shoot so when he told me about a L’Officiel Ukraine shoot and that his wife, Tracy Wingrove, would be doing the sets, I jumped on it. I Tracy needed extra time to put the set together so I told her to come in and start working on it while I was shooting another editorial in the same studio we’d be using the next day. It worked out great that I was shooting two days in this studio, allowing us to have some of the clothing and props delivered to the studio the day before.

Victoria Anderson and McKenna from Wilhelmina NY were our two gorgeous models from this shoot. The issue hit the newsstands this month so it was a pre-Spring story. Donald pulled very colorful pieces and wild prints. Donald had the genius idea of hiring body painters to paint gloves on the girls depending on what they were wearing and also bringing some painted color to their faces. I loved it! The thing about working with someone like Donald is that he always pushes the envelope and goes that extra step ensuring you have killer images! And not just another dull fashion story…..

Gee Whiz, I wish I could break off some gnarly lighting secret here for this shoot but the plain truth is that I used one light again and that light was the Elinchrome Octabank. One big, beautiful source of soft light was all I need to light the girls on the set. We had Issey Miyake, Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexis Bittar, Michael Kors and Etro clothing which made me swoon as I truly am a fashion addict and love great clothes! I shot with my D800 and used my 85mm, 105mm and my trusty 24mm for one wide shot, which ended up being the lead page on the editorial. I shot at ISO 100 and I used around an F8 through out the day with my shutter set at 100. I didn’t want to shoot super tight at 11 or higher because I didn’t want total sharpness on the backgrounds but depending on the shot, I didn’t want them to totally be in focus either.

I love this shoot and I really value knowing people like Donald Lawrence and Tracy Wingrove because working with them is not only really fun, I get great images at the end of the day. And the editor was so thrilled with the shoot she ran all 10 pages!

I get a lot of fan mail. I’m not trying to brag, just letting you know the facts here. And a consistent request is how people would LOVE to come watch me shoot. I can’t tell you how many requests I get for “Can I just be a fly on the wall and watch you shoot?? I’ll get the coffee, hold your light stand, anything….I just would LOVE to watch you shoot!!” I can’t normally really allow that to happen as I have to keep my sets closed and not have any distractions while I’m shooting. But we came up with a great idea for those attending my workshop next month! On Monday, the day after our weekend long intensive learning workshop, I am inviting all those who participated in the workshop to come join me the next day, Monday March 18th to watch me shoot a 10 page editorial for Ben Trovato! Marius Troy has asked me to shoot another Ben Trovato Exclusive and he has worked out a theme for me. I will take my students from the mood boards that Marius and I have sent back and forth and how I chose the models for the shoot, hair and make up and stylist too. And then you’ll watch me shoot each look for each page and how I execute an editorial. We’ll have lunch delivered and we’ll shoot through the day, getting every image done to perfection and in the can before we call it a wrap! So there are a few seats left for those of you who are considering coming to LA and participating in the workshop!

Expand on Demand: Secret Deck Spaces for Small Dwellings

When it comes to tall apartment and condo buildings, the idea of adding more space is almost always out of the question – but what if you could push a balcony outward on demand, rather than adding an entire deck or patio? Here are three designs to expand outdoor space in creative ways.

The Bloomframe is a Dutch architect-designed system that turns a simple set of windows into a spacious exterior extension that can be electronically deployed and retracted – like a convertible top, you can experience the outdoors during nice weather, take out the grill, then close the unit as desired.

An alternative from Fakro works with existing frame sizes on angled roofs, and provides you both a way to lean out (a form of Juliet balcony, with window frame doubling as front rail) as well as overhead shelter from the rain. This system is also simpler and entirely mechanical, so deploying it is as easy as opening a normal glass window.

And for those who already have a deck, but not enough room to put any furniture on it, this space-saving furniture solution (Spaceless) by Sandy Lam is a great source of inspiration: her designs for a table and seat set that fold up for use and hide, camouflaged amid wood decking, when tucked back away.

From the designer: “the average price of residential buildings in downtown Vancouver BC has reached $ 800 per square foot. Many people have to give up their garden living and move into concrete buildings because of this increase in housing prices. Even though living space is expensive, there is one space rarely used in condo buildings—the balcony. The goal of having “Spaceless” is to use the condo balcony to maximize living space and to improve the building environment by enhancing the functionality of the balcony space.”
