Just Posted: Our hands-on preview of the Pentax MX-1. The enthusiast sector has become so vibrant that our pre-Christmas roundup included nine cameras. Not wanting to be left out of the action, Pentax-Ricoh has launched its own 12MP camera with a 1/1.7″ sensor – the MX-1. As well as a slightly familiar-looking 28-112mm equivalent, F1.8-2.5 zoom lens, the MX-1 takes the unusual step of including brass top- and base-plates – meaning its classic looks should become even more pronounced as it ages. Read on to find out more.

"We don’t copy the objects we use, we try to transform them and we hope they go on transforming as you look at them. The idea of endless public dialogue.. visual dialogue.. is very important to us."

On May 11, 2012, we officially opened the newly rebuilt and improved Far Rockaway-Mott Av terminal on the A line. The sparkling, steel and glass, state-of-the art transit facility includes "Respite," a new glass panel artwork by Jason Rohlf made in jewel-toned colors from original paintings. The artwork dramatically diffuses the light inside to create a richly saturated interior space. The work can be seen throughout the station as well as from outside, adding visual impact to the existing architecture. Photo: Metropolitan Transportation Authority / Rob Wilson.

fifty two heartbeats [a requiem for 2009]

the entire 8 here:

a new decade. new directions. new connections.

this is a beat poem for the eyes in eight parts.

some sections have been considered, some are purely accidental.

fifty two pieces. diverse. from landscape to dada to abstract to portrait. and beyond.

the people, the artists, have made my year better. their gift to me.

this is a visual echo to them. to you.

a new decade.

may it treat you well.

[NB]

this work is in not in ‘absolute’ order of preference.

though of course, from the beginning, i thought about those who have a deep connection for me, so there is a modicum of ‘hierarchy’.

however, i suddenly remembered people who are dear to me toward the end of the process!! you cannot read too much into your ‘placing’ in the mosaics, and that is as it should be.

if you are not in the mix, i can only apologise. it was quite a lengthy process 😮
i will certainly have forgotten people [i can think of several now] who should have been a part of this process, but a year only contains a finite number of weeks.

you are not forgotten.

the best to all my contacts.

should you be interested in the fundamental reasons for many of my contacts being held in high esteem and great regard, please feel free to cast an eye over my new year video. it explains much with regard to how i view my contacts:

www.flickr.com/photos/the-g-uk/4232387716/

once again.

thank you all, for being who you are.

Knowing Your Place in Nature

07 Jan

To fully respect nature it helps to know where your place is in it.

Take a gander at an animation of 400,000 galaxies in their actual positions and you’ll have a new appreciation for how small we are and how wonderful our small oasis in space is. This animation was derived from the latest Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III) that identified 535,995 newly observed galaxies, 102,100 quasars, and 116,474 stars. This is well worth watching full-screen with the volume loud.

There are close to 400,000 galaxies in the animation, each containing between 100 billion and 400 billion stars. The images of the actual galaxies in these positions derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7. As vast as this slice of space seems, it only corresponds to a small fraction of the known universe.

Die besten Fotos auf kwerfeldein 2012

07 Jan
