300 “Best Photos of 2012? Blog Posts

15 Jan

At the conclusion of every year I’ve adopted the tradition of reviewing my year in photos, picking my 10 best photos and evaluating those that were near misses. This exercise is something I’ve written about on DPS in  How to Top Your Best 2008 Photos and Year In Review: 6 More Ways to Top Your Best Photos and is something I consider to be critical to my success and growth as a photographer. On my blog I encourage my readers to adopt this exercise and to share their results in my annual Best of Photos blog project. In addition to benefiting from the underlying effort of evaluating your work and identifying areas of growth, accessing a list of best work by other photographers provides a spring of inspiration to launch participants into the new year.

Participants in this years “Best Photos of 2012″ blog project spanned a spectrum of skill levels from hobbyists to professionals and covered a wide variety of genres including landscape, macro, nature, photojournalism, portraiture, event, wildlife, fine art photography and more. There are likely many names you’ll recognize below, some famous, and many others you won’t. I highly recommend visiting each entry as I have. Even after 6 years of running this blog project I’m blown away by the talent and creativity of those that take part. It is truly inspirational to see so much creativity and beauty. If your curious to see photos I personally enjoyed look out for the entries with *** next to them.

If you have not yet taken stock of your 2012 photographs, it’s not too late. Share your best of 2012 photo sets from your blog, Flickr, 500px, Google+ or Facebook by adding a link in the comments below.

Make a DIY Zoetrope with Your Phone

15 Jan

Extra photos for bloggers: 1, 2, 3

Back when Zeppelins were zipping around and petticoats were all the rage, the zoetrope was the closest you could get to catching a movie.

If you suppose this little gizmo went out with the steam engine, think again.

Our DIY tutorial gives the zoetrope a 21st century makeover by using the panorama function of a phone.

Yes, with just a few shutter clicks and scissor snips you can create your very own stop motion movie machine.

Sound fun? Well full speed ahead on the zoetrope express!

Make a Zoetrope with Your Phone!

Why it’s Cool:

ingred-smThe zoetrope has the distinction of being the world’s first device to create motion pictures.

It was invented by the Chinese in 180 AD, making it the great great grandfather of the GIF.

Combining this millennia old device with a touch of cutting edge technology just gives us a smile that won’t quit.

Also, the zoetrope is a great way to show off your panorama skills and makes for a fun little coffee table accessory or Christmas tree ornament.

Check out the zoetrope we made on our phone in action!

Zoetrope in Action from Photojojo loves you on Vimeo.

Ingredients:

paint-sm

  • Smartphone with panorama function
  • Cylindrical cardboard canister. A Quaker Oats container will do the trick.
  • Matte black spray paint
  • Scissors or an X-acto knife
  • Pencil
  • String
  • Ruler
  • A friend to pose for you

Step 1: Do the Panorama Dance

paint-smWe made our image strip with an iPhone and an app called Panorama which has more manual control than the built in app. Photaf is a good app for Android users.

Panorama works differently than the built in iPhone app. To use it snap your first shot and then sweep the camera to your right.

A ghostly overlay of your last pic will show up on the left of your screen. Line up this overlayed image with the edge of your next shot, and then hit the shutter.

By standing your subject smack dab in the middle of each frame and changing their movement slightly in each section of your panorama, you can create a stop motion effect when the images are viewed in your zoetrope.

For best results, try to keep lighting consistent, movements small, and a good amount of contrast between your subject and the background.

Step 2: Transfer your Treasure

paint-smNow that you’ve done the dance, it’s time to take your panorama across the great phone/computer divide.

No sweat though, just send your full sized panorama to your computer via email, or sync it with your computer’s photo manager.

Step 3: Size and Print

paint-smMy what lovely wallpaper your zoetrope has.

Open up your panorama in Photoshop or a similar editing program to resize it.

To find your zoetrope’s inside circumference, coil a piece of string around the inner wall of your cardboard cylinder and measure it with a ruler.

In Photoshop, go to Image > Image Size and under Document Size put the measurement you just took as the Width. Also, change the Resolution to 300 for printing.

You will need to cut your panorama in half to print it on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.

Create a new document in photoshop with 8.5 x 11 dimensions and a resolution of 300. Paste in your panorama, select half of it, then press ctrl-x and ctrl-v. Now drag one half under the other.

Print your image strip and congratulations, you just got a yellow belt in Photoshop.

Step 4: Deep Cuts

paint-smAlright Edward Scissorhands, let’s get choppin’.

This helpful article explains the zoetrope making process in great detail and provides some handy cutting guides.

Start by printing up the template, cutting it out, and taping it to your cardboard cylinder.

Cut off the top part of your cardboard container, making sure to leave enough room for your image strip and viewing slits.

Use your scissors or an X-acto knife to cut out the vertical slits on top for viewing holes.

When you’re done, your container should look like a little castle turret.

Step 5: All Together Now

paint-smAlright, let’s put those images in motion!

Bust out your black spray paint and give the outside walls of your zoetrope a quick coat. This will make your animation much easier to see.

Once the paint is dry, cut out your image strip, tape the two pieces together and place the long strip against the lower inside wall of you zoetrope.

Gently poke a pencil through the bottom of the zoetrope and twirl like mad! You can also place your zoetrope on a turntable, or whirl it on a CD spindle or lazy susan.

Watch the action through the spinning teeth and discover why the Chinese called the zoetrope “the pipe which makes fantasies appear.”

Take it Further

  • Start stripping: Create a collection of photo strips to go along with your new zoetrope.
  • Get inspired by Peter Hudson’s 3D pedal powered zoetrope.
  • Keep an eye out for zoetropes in a subway near you.

7 Abandoned Wonders of Institutional Architecture

Abandoned Institutional Buildings Main

Churches, prisons, psychiatric hospitals and courthouses given over to the elements can sometimes taken on a mythic significance, given a haunting, creepy beauty by the passage of time. Removed from their former functions, these institutional buildings become both architectural skeletons and snapshots of human activity, frozen in time. In their emptiness, the echoes of past patients, prisoners and parishioners seem louder than ever.

Carabanchel Prison, Spain

One of the biggest prisons in Europe until its closure in 1998, Madrid’s Carabanchel Prison was built by political prisoners after the Spanish Civil War between 1940 and 1944. During the ten years of its abandonment, the prison was inhabited by homeless people and other marginal groups, and covered in elaborate graffiti. Despite its historical significance and the protests of many locals, the prison was demolished in 2008.

It represented one of the most impressive examples of the repressive panopticon design, which allows a watchman to observe all inmates without them knowing when they’re being watched. The panopticon arrangement was initially envisioned not just for prisons, but also for hospitals, sanitariums and daycares.

St. Agnes Church, Detroit

Abandoned in 2006 due to financial troubles, Detroit’s St. Agnes church remained in fairly good condition for three years, though it had been stripped to its bare bones. Even once all of the organ pipes, chandeliers and stained glass windows were gone, the church displayed much of its old grandeur.

But the structure underwent a striking transformation in 2009, when leaks in the roof led to extensive water damage and mold, causing the masonry to crumble. Textural details are revealed in stark contrast by a black grime of dirt and mold. Today, the church looks like much of the rest of Detroit; it has been looted and vandalized to the point of being unrecognizable.

Gartloch Mental Hospital, Scotland

In service for over a century, Gartloch Hospital is a sprawling Victorian complex located just outside the city of Glasgow, Scotland. From the time of its opening in 1889, it served as an asylum for the poor people of the city. Though its primary purpose was as a psychiatric hospital, it temporarily served as an emergency medical facility during World War II. It was the subject of many a Scottish ghost story long before it closed in 1996, and today its dark, empty hallways feel more haunted than ever.

Hellingly Asylum, Sussex

Has any creepy old mental hospital ever been more fittingly named? Hellingly Asylum in Sussex, England opened in 1903 to relieve overcrowding at other institutions during a time in which people could be thrown into hospitals for the rest of their lives for being gay or having a child out of wedlock. Located on 400 acres, the complex included sex-separated wards, a villa for ‘mentally defective’ children, and a small isolation hospital for infectious diseases, which stood in the woods at some distance from the rest of the buildings. The hospital even had its own electric tramway.

Hellingly closed in 1994 and most of its buildings fell into rapid decline. Fires, vandalism and theft took their toll. Medical equipment and furniture could still be seen among the ruins during the years in which the only people who ever entered were urban explorers, graffiti artists, photographers and people with questionable intentions.

Today, only a few buildings remain. Most have been demolished to make way for new housing.

Next – Pripyat Schools, Bronx Borough Courthouse and Gary, Indiana’s City Methodist Church

Is she a Victorian pin-up, a girl next-door, a movie star, a party hostess, a factory worker or a swimsuit beauty? Her demeanor is radiant, vivacious and breezy. She exudes youthful energy and appears picture perfect wherever she goes, dressed up in the latest fashion.
When ‘Coca-Cola’ started in the 1890s portraying these independent women, it was still a uncongenial time for a girl with big ideas. Women were discouraged from thinking beyond household drudgery, and derided if they distinguished themselves. From these early days, ‘Coca-Cola’ has used the girl portraits in unique ways, always running miles ahead of the times. ‘Coca-Cola’ encouraged and inspired women to live their lives to the fullest and share life experiences.
Far away from the proper etiquette, the ‘Coca-Cola’ girl spreads her wings, chooses hobbies of the modern age and makes a lot of fun. She is traveling, sporting, sunbathing, inviting her friends over, flirting…
From the portraits of cheerleaders at the soda fountain to the ones of iconic actresses and women in flight suits: as a symbol of women’s emancipation, it could hardly be bettered.
