Creative Color Processing (Part 2/3 – Split Toning)

21 Dec

This is Part 2 of a 3-part series on creative color effects using Lightroom 4. In Part 1 of the series, I discussed shifting White Balance either warmer or cooler for creative effect. In this article I will explain Split Toning, and also give you some ideas for using creative white balance and split toning together for even more color control.

For this image, I used split toning to complement the autumn foliage by adding red to the shadow areas:

Split toning used to add a warm reddish hue

Example of Split Toning used to add a reddish hue

While white balance affects the entire image, split toning allows you to treat the shadows and highlights differently. You can add one color to the shadows and a different color to the highlights, and also control the balance between the two.

In processing this scene of a street in Tokyo I used split toning to add blue to the shadows and yellow to the highlights:

Example of Yellow / Blue Split Toning

Split Toning can also be combined with white balance for creative effect. In the photo below I used a cool 3500 kelvin white balance, and then used split toning to warm the skin tones by adding yellow to the highlights. The result is cool-toned image, without unnaturally bluish skin tones. In this way, white balance and split toning can be used together to create an effect that would not be possible with either tool on its own.

Creative color processing is very subject, and ultimately comes down to personal preference. Even if you don’t really like the editing decisions I’ve made in these sample photos, I hope I’ve inspired you to try some new techniques for creatively processing your photos. I appreciate feedback, please comment below or feel free to connect with me through Facebook or Google+.

This concludes Part 2 of my Creative Color Processing series. In Part 3, I will show you how to use the Tone Curve tool to control the red, green, and blue color channels separately.

German photographer Markus Reugels has gained quite a bit of attention over the years for his stunning and colorful high-speed photographs of the shapes and forms created when liquid is dropped into water. If you’ve ever been curious as to what it takes to get images like these, Reugels talks briefly about the equipment and technique he’s currently using and shares an image of his actual setup.

NJ Ghost Towns – The Bridge To NoWhere ! – Flatbrook River, Delaware Water Gap NJ

21 Dec

New Jersey Ghost Towns: Along the Delaware River are entire towns where the people were forced out by the government in the 60s because they were going to flood the towns and build a huge reservoir. This was known as the ‘Tocks River Project’ (there are numerous books on the subject). After this ‘forced evacuation’ two problems came up. The first was the Vietnam War which caused all funding to be diverted toward the war effort. The second, although not widely publicized, was the fact that the mountain that was supposed to support the proposed dam, didn’t have the right foundation to hold the water back as previously thought. As the genius of government decisions go, they tried to raise funds for the project by putting an ad in the local newspapers and renting out the abandoned houses. Well, you can imagine how those people felt who were forced out of their homes and lost everything to see ‘migrating hippies’ from New York City descending down on the area in droves. Hundreds squatted in these homes getting government checks to live there. One night, again, the government had the National Guard and State Police Agencies descend down upon the area to chase the squatters. Now, years later, you can see the remnants of these deserted houses and towns, now in the Federal Domain, but since the government is pretty much fund-less, what’s left of the houses, the towns and the surrounding land lie in limbo in a bunch of government red tape. Shell-Shaped Shoffice: Backyard Shed/Office Combo

20 Dec

[ By Steph in Offices & Commercial. ]

Part backyard office, part storage space, part sculpture: the ‘Shoffice’ by Platform 5 Architects is a multi-functional pavilion that curls over itself like a shell. The architects created this unusual detached office structure for a residence in northwest London, and it fits neatly into a small walled garden space.

Two-thirds of the shed/office combo is enclosed for use as an office, while the other third is open to the elements. The open area provides a space to store gardening implements and other items that would normally be kept in a shed.

The wooden shell curves from one side of the office all the way under its floor, creating a terrace in front for lounging in the sun. The structure is made with two steel ring beams, timber ribs and a plywood skin, and was mostly prefabricated for ease of installation.

Glass walls on two sides provide both daylighting and a view straight into the home, providing a visual connection but maintaining the peace and privacy desired in a detached office or studio.

The ‘Shoffice’ is just one of many such backyard retreats. See 14 more outside offices including work pods, ‘eggs’, modular structures and more.
