Dusky Fog – San Francisco, California

13 Feb

Seeing that we’re about to end another week I thought a sunset / dusk photo might be in order. Pictured below is the north western section of San Francisco (Sea Cliff, Outer Richmond, the Golden Gate Park and Outer Sunset) as seen from the Marin Headlands on a mildly foggy evening at dusk. Note the solid horizontal band dividing the city lights is Golden Gate Park.

I should also note as we transition into the weekend that if you’re looking for some interesting reading or listening I was recently interviewed on the B&H Insights blog and on the Nik Radio podcast (click the 2/2/12 episode) [UPDATE: Info & Audio Link]. Speaking of Nik coincidently the image below was fine tuned with Nik’s Vivezia software.

‘No Future in Photojournalism’ – an interview with Dan Chung

12 Feb

dc.jpg

Award-winning photographer Dan Chung explains why he thinks there’s no future for traditional photojournalism. As a staff photographer for the Guardian and Reuters, Dan has been touring the world’s trouble-spots for more than a decade, supplying images to newspapers and websites all over the globe. But although he made his name as a stills photographer, he’s been shooting increasing amounts of video both for the web and for TV. We asked him why.

new gear – elinchrom ranger quadra

12 Feb

DSC_2676

Just got the 2 head kit, looks like a great piece of gear.  Full review forthcoming as soon as I get a couple of shoots down with it.  Initial impressions are *wow*  It puts out an amazing amount of *quality* light for such a tiny package.

Facebook Lightbox vs Google+: which better presents your images?

12 Feb

Icon.jpg

Facebook is making its first steps towards taking photography seriously with the launch of its Lightbox display interface. The change, which is being rolled-out to users in the coming weeks, darkens the rest of the screen when a photo is selected and shows images in greater detail than before (up to 960 pixels in each dimension). How does this presentation compare to the more obviously photo-friendly Google+ service?

Cool Visual Art images

A few nice visual art images I found:

Millie, the Brampton Arts Council mascot
visual art
Visual Arts Brampton brought the Brampton Arts Council’s Millie to the parade, and she was quite popular. She met with kids for almost 40 minutes non-stop after the hour long parade.

She first came to Brampton in 2000, as a Millennium Bug for the City’s year long celebrations; she wasn’t the Y2K bug, just a Millennium Bug. She’s actually a lady bug anyway, so she’s not even related to the feared problem starter.

Zen Landscape

In a quiet neighborhood of small brick houses from the 1950s, where every yard is open grass with a few foundation flowers, there exists this amazing Japanese treescape. It is located one block from where I once lived in suburban Washington DC. The trees have grown and filled in since last I saw it. The house is painted charcoal black, allowing it to disappear.
