Nikon has announced the SB-910, the flagship flashgun in its Speedlight range. Replacing the SB-900, the 910 gains the simpler graphic user interface (GUI) of the less powerful SB-700. Its more advanced thermal protection system slows the flash recycle time, rather than it simply shutting down to prevent overheating. It comes with hard filters for matching fluorescent and tungsten lighting and automatically switches the camera’s white balance to match the filter. Similarly it adjusts the available zoom steps to suit the body (FX or DX) that it’s attached to. The SB910 will be available from mid-December, priced around $ 549.95.

Street Art In Drogheda

October 2006 saw the opening of the town’s first dedicated municipal art gallery and visual arts centre, the Highlanes Gallery, housed in the former Franciscan Friary on St. Laurence Street. The Highlanes Gallery holds Drogheda’s important municipal art collection which dates from the 17th century as well as visiting exhibitions in a venue which meets key international museum and gallery standards.Drogheda’s most famous visual artist was the abstract expressionist painter Nano Reid (d.1981). Raphael Hynes, Richard Moore, Liam O’ Broin, Padhraic Murphy and Ronan Halpin are among Drogheda’s best known living artists.
The original Drogheda bypass bridge over the river Boyne, known locally as the "Bridge of Peace", is well-known regionally for its aerosol graffiti murals. Under the bridge, on each side of the river there are two large concrete supports that measure approximately 8 metres high, and 20 metres long. Starting in the 1980s with the breakdance craze, these supports were painted and sprayed with murals by aerosol artists. This activity at the time was technically illegal and frowned upon by the local authorities. Today the murals are frequently updated and limited sponsorship of the artists is provided by local businesses.

We are proud to announce that our DVD is now officially available to purchase!! A very special thank you to all of you who have pre-ordered!! Your DVD was shipped out today and should be in your hands very soon! The pre-order response was overwhelming! It was very touching to see so many pre-orders come in right from the very first night I announced it. How rewarding it is to see so many people interested in what I’ve produced and what I have to say!
So as a special thank you we are offering up the very first DVD hot off the press. The “Test” DVD. The prototype, as it were. I have signed it in silver pen to keep the aesthetics and it’s going to go to one lucky winner in the following contest! Yes, you’re going to have to work for it, if you want it. Isn’t that what I’ve been trying to say about this industry? If you want it you’re gonna’ have to work for it!

When I was looking at reviews of the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra, one of the most common complaints people seemed to have was the fact that they couldn’t mount standard umbrellas on it (Elinchrom uses a 7mm umbrella shaft, while most others in the US use an 8mm shaft).
Now this seemed kind of silly to me – first off, the Quadra head is extremely small and lightweight – hanging anything larger than a *tiny* umbrella off it just seems like a recipe for disaster. Secondly I thought to myself “I mount umbrellas on speedlights all the time and they have no umbrella holder whatsoever – why is the quadra any different?” The solution:

The plain ol’ vanilla Umbrella Swivel. Beloved of “Strobists” everywhere, it provides a secure slot/mount for the umbrella, placing the weight & torque on itself rather than the strobe head. Screw in a post on top, plop the Quadra head on that and good to go. You can even still use the angle of the quadra head itself to hit the sweet spot of the umbrella.

Personally this is just fine for me. works great for my umbrellas, Apollo softboxes and Softliters…but let’s say you need the light more “on axis” with the umbrella shaft (maybe to fit the hole in one of the new PLM diffusion screens for instance…) I found the easiest thing is to simply take a second swivel, and use it to “hang” the head off the umbrella shaft itself. The head is light enough that it doesn’t put undue strain on the shaft (or the swivel).

Kinda kludgy but it works. Personally I don’t bother – mounting it on the swivel itself is quick, easy and gets the job done with hardware that I’m already carrying anyway for my speedlights.
So there you have it: Mounting umbrellas on the Quadra made easy!
