Sony offers NEX-5N adjustment for users experiencing video clicking

24 Sep

Sony has posted a note on its support site saying it will modify NEX-5N cameras of users troubled by clicking noises during video recording. The company points out that the phenomenon only occurs: ‘if the camera undergoes sudden motion while recording; motion generally inconsistent with smooth video recording.’ But has said it will make an ‘adjustment’ to the cameras (during the warranty period) of users who feel they’re likely to encounter the issue. The company doesn’t say that only people combining jogging with their videography need apply, but…

Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 – Apply Artistic Effects Including Blur, Cement, Chalk Sketch, Film Grain

24 Sep

Apply artistic effects to pictures / photos in a PowerPoint 2010 presentation without loading an external image editor.

Artistic effects can help photographs stand out in a presentation, and in some cases when needed, blend in. Instead of editing images using an external editor, Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 comes built-in with a variety of effects.

For example, “Blur” may be useful when trying to place text on top of a picture, making it more readable. “Glow Edges” makes a photo look as if it is lit in neon. “Light Screen” creates a cubist / 8-bit / blocky image. “Paint Brush” may alter some photographs to look instead like paintings. PowerPoint comes built-in with 22 such artistic effects….

This is the D5100 with 18-55mm VR kit. No editing software, no filters, only the camera. A few captions with some of the settings (Didn’t mention everything because I didn’t want to ruin it with text). Feel free to ask questions. Watch using the highest resolution.

Microsoft Word 2010 – Remove White Space Between Pages in Print Layout View

23 Sep

In Word 2010, if there is too much white space between pages when viewing documents in Print Layout View, here’s how to reduce it.

When viewing Microsoft Word 2010 documents in “Print Layout” view, a small amount of space is added between pages, presumably to make the separation between pages more clear-cut onscreen.

If you perform document editing where you need to look at the bottom of one page and the top of the next page, you might find these few pixels a waste of space, especially on smaller monitors. Thus there are a couple of ways you can reduce the space between pages to only a couple of pixels:…

Sunrise at Wild Goose Island, Glacier National Park

23 Sep

Few places are as dramatic in appearance at sunrise as Glacier National Park in Montana. When I visit Glacier National Park I never miss an opportunity to witness a sunrise (even if I’ve had to fight my inner voice).  One of the best locations to take in a sunrise in the park is at the Wild Goose Island lookout.

You only get one sunrise and one sunset a day, and you only get so many days on the planet. A good photographer does the math and doesn’t waste either. – Galen Rowell

To capture the full sunrise scene pictured below I created a panoramic from 3 images via a Canon 24mm tilt-shift lens. Even though my multi-image panoramic technique expanded the angle of view to capture more of the scene than a single frame could, its impossible to do this scene justice. Out of frame was a Bald Eagle circling about getting an even better view of the scene unfolding. In all of my years visiting Glacier I’ve never seen a Bald Eagle. It made an amazing sunrise all the more special.
