28 June, 2010 – Leica S2, First Impressions

25 Aug

The Leica S2 has been out for many months, and there have been a number of reviews (including my own First Impressions report from Germany last September).

Now my associate, Mark Dubovoy, has had a chance to use the S2, and to compare it with his current primary systemS, the Phase One DF with P65+, and also a Leica M9. How does the S2 shape up against the world’s highest resolution digital back and also the S2’s littler brother? Find out in Mark Dubovoy’s Leica S2 – First Impressions.

3 July, 2010 – LuLa Gallery in Toronto Closing & Print Sale

24 Aug

The Luminous Landscape Gallery is closing as of July, 2010. It’s been a fun three years since it opened, and I thank everyone who visited for your interest and support.

The gallery has served primarily as a teaching space and print studio. It also has functioned as a gallery whenever I was working there and in town, but given my travel commitments this hasn’t been often enough to justify keeping it open.

On next Saturday, July 10, 2010, from 11am until 3pm I will be having a print sale. This will consist of approximately 30 large matted and framed prints that are currently on display on the gallery walls, as well as a number of large format unmatted and unframed prints.

For those that are interested, I will be continuing my print studio and teaching activities out of my new studio space near Creemore, Ontario. Details to be announced. I may also have gallery shows from time to time at other Toronto area galleries, as I would in the days prior to my Carlaw gallery.

How Would You Approach Photographing a Model?

23 Aug

This question arrived in our inbox from a regular reader – Sammy – and I thought it might make an interesting community workshop where you, the readers of dPS, have a go at giving some good tips on how to approach the situation of working with a model for the first time.

Dear dPS. I have long wanted to work in a studio environment with a professional model to test my portrait skills (my kids are completely sick of me posing them). So this week I booked a professional model to come and sit for me. When I booked her I was full of bravado – but now as the day approaches I’m completely losing it and am so nervous.

I’ve been up front with her that this is my first time but don’t want to come off as a complete idiot – do you have any suggestions for working with a model for the first time? Perhaps some tips on how to make them at ease, posing tips and anything that won’t make me come across as a complete hack – or worse, a sleaze who is so desperate that he’ll pay for the company of a pretty girl (I promise I’m not)! Help!?!

What advice do you have for Sammy with photographing a model for the first time?

Monterey Pines in the Fog

20 Aug

Two of the most photogenic nature icons in San Francisco are the fog and Monterey Pine trees. Shaped by the wind Monterey Pines have a rugged appearance and texture. When shrouded by fog these trees stand out even more with their sweeping canopy and jagged branches. This scene was photographed very close to my home and in viewing it you can’t help but get the feeling these trees are reaching out to embrace the fog as it wisps by. Only after years of walking my dogs here have I learned that in fact that is what they’re doing. Their needles condense water from the fog and it drips down to the ground allowing them to hydrate and grow ever taller into the fog.
