Portrait Photography using continuous lighting

Gavin Hoey explores with the use of the smick.co.uk 3 head super softbox continuous lighting kit to take portraits. The kit is powerful and versatile, this is an alternative to studio flash for taking portraits, the main advantage is that you see what you get. The kit uses energy saving compact fluorescent daylight bulbs which means that they produce great light and not much heat compared with tungsten redhead type lighting. Ok, I had to submit a second edition and delete the first one, as several more portraits were rated and ranked within the last week. So, here is the final portrait review of 2008. It’s fitting that I should post this on New year’s eve. 2009 Promises to be even better in photography for me and I hope you’ll visit my site and see the many updates. Portraits are the focus, but of course, I shoot anything that pays the bills… thank you all for your continued interest and also to those of you who have hired me so many times through 2008.

Lost in Photoshop: another old photo restoration part i

I have a tip about straightening the rotation of images — particularly scanned images. the old photo is younger than 1901 and older than 1930, I believe. Given the image size (approximately 2 1/4 x 3 1/2) I would guess that it was taken by a Kodak Brownie (probably ‘2’) camera. The original image had faded quite a bit. I attempt to use various techniques to recover the image, including: level adjustments, use of high pass filter, use of surface blur filter, use of “split masks”, and attempting to reconstitute “depth” using linear burn (non-destructively) in an “overlay” [not the mode] layer.
