Ever wonder what would happen to a dozen white roses if you put dye in the water? That was the premise behind this project. I had been told thats how you get blue roses simply take white roses and let them drink in blue water. I thought thatd make a good time-lapse video so I got all the ingredients together and got started. Well, the first attempt at this (done about two months ago and never uploaded) didnt turn out so well. For one, the dye seemed to go straight to the petal edges and then only spotted the rest. I also didnt like the composure, the set-up, and the lighting was insufficient. For v2 I improved what I could: I added better lighting, used a black background, and went from taking a frame every 60 seconds to every 75 seconds. I could not, however, improve the way the dye fed into the flowers. Here are the details: Total frames: 2936* Interval: 75 sec. Total Span: 2 days, 13 hours, 10 minutes Frames per second: 30, however video was later compressed to shorten and therefore youre probably seeing closer to 50 frames/second; or, to put it another way, for every 1 second of this video equates to about 1 hour of elapsed time. Unlike v1, I let the flowers sit in normal water for the first 4 hours before adding blue dye to the water (so at about 4 seconds into this video youll see the water turn blue). Then I let the blue dye take hold over the course of the next 24 hours. To spruce things up a bit, I then added yellow dye to the mix to get you guessed it the water …
How do you use exposure compensation? In this video Gavin Hoey www.gavtrain.com explains how exposure compensation can be used to over ride a cameras metering when shooting a subject that has a very dark or very bright background. In this episode I talk about a couple of affordable manual pancake lenses from the film photography era that work great with video DSLRs. I compare two versions of Nikon’s 50mm 1.8, one with multi-coating, and one without. Official Lens names: Nikon Nikkor AI-S 50mm 1.8 NEW MIJ Nikon Series E 50mm 1.8 NEW MIJ Blog post: fromtheraw.blogspot.com These will work great on DX Nikon DSLRs for video or photos in Manual mode (‘M’ on the dial) only with Live view turned on. -soon I will post a video with a trick I found out to get them to work without Live View, comment if you need to know now! Please check your compatibility first! For Canon or other DSLRs, or micro four thirds cameras please look into lens adapters, they are a great option to get some inexpensive older Nikon glass on whatever you shoot with. This video is comprised of around 6000 still images taken in June and September of 2010. This stubborn video has been in production since June 2010 and I finally got it all stitched together and looking good. I had a lot of trouble rendering this puppy correctly but I think that I learned enough about the inner workings of the software to counteract my anger about it. Making these time lapses are some of the most enjoyable things we’ve ever done. To sit alone or with your special someone in the garden early in the soft morning light with the company of a still pond and lotus blossoms makes everything feel right in the world. We had this song, Aqueous Transmission, in mind while we planned and captured the time lapse sequences. Just listening to it with your eyes closed makes you feel so peaceful. We wanted to convey that feeling in the video and create a tribute to one of our favourite songs. So as for the video: My computer at home sucks so bad that I wasn’t able to fully preview it. I’m not that happy with the quality in this version but meh, when I finish the whole thing it will be better. 🙂 If anyone has any tips for using Adobe Media Enocoder, I’d be delighted to get some tips.

www.customidea.com What is geotagging? It’s a question we often get asked by Nikon camera owners yet this area of photography is becoming very popular. Geo tagging, more often called ‘geotagging’ is the process of adding geotags to your photos. Geo tags, or ‘geotags’ are extra tags of data which include latitude longitude and altitude and together define a specific location. Wouldn’t it be great if all your Picasa or Photobucket images included the exact location they were taken? Well fortunately your favourite DSLR, for example the D200, D700 or D3 and many others already support geotagging and now, instead of buying an expensive Garmin and a long adaptor cable you can buy a direct connect geotagger — the GeoPic II. This great geotagger will geotag your pictures direct on the Nikon camera and straight into the EXIF data. Once the tags are there you can use your favourite photo managing software, for example Picasa, or Adobe Photoshop, or other software like Opanda, KUSO EXIF viewer, Nikon ViewNX, Apple Preview and JetPhoto Studio to use the tags. Typically photographers use the software to see their photos overlaid on a map which is a great way to display your pictures. This HD video shows just how easy it is to connect a GeoPic II to your Nikon camera and start geotagging your photos. It also shows how to see and use the geotags later in Picasa and Google Earth.
