FAA releases ‘Notice of Proposed Rulemaking’ for Remote ID on drones

Remote ID, the concept that drones should have a digital license plate, has experienced numerous delays. As promised, though, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) finally announced their Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for the Remote Identification of Unmanned Aircraft Systems on Thursday. The 319-page document will be published on December 31st. From there, the general public will have 60 days to post comments for the FAA’s consideration. Those interested in reading through the NPRM, to prepare their comments, can download the unpublished PDF version.

‘The widespread adoption of Remote Identification is expected to clear a path for routine use of drones in more complex and beneficial operations, such as flights over people, at night or beyond the pilot’s line of sight,’ states an announcement from DJI, the world’s leading drone manufacturer. The new rules proposed by the FAA would require almost every drone owner, both commercial and recreational, operating an unmanned aerial vehicle weighing at or over 0.55 pounds (0.25 kilograms), to broadcast their location along with their identity via radio frequency when flying. Two years after the regulations are implemented, new drones would be required to include tamper-resistant tracking devices.

Under the new proposed rules, remote pilots would have the option to eschew radio broadcasting and upload their information to the Internet. On the downside, that would limit them to flying their aircraft at a maximum distance of 400 feet. If you aren’t able to connect to the Internet, a strong possibility in rural areas, you won’t be able to take off at all unless you’re operating ‘within an FAA-recognized identification area,’ according to one section of the NPRM.

The current NPRM for Remote ID is subject to change based on how the FAA takes comments from industry stakeholders and the public into consideration. Once finalized in an estimated 12-18 month period, it is expected to take 3 more years to implement. Alphabet’s Wing and Amazon Prime plan on rolling out drone delivery networks nationwide and finalized rulemaking for Remote ID is the key to making it possible. Over a 10-year span, the costs to drone operators and the industry, as a whole, are expected to exceed over $ 500 million dollars. ‘As we review the FAA’s proposal, we will be guided by the principle, recognized by the FAA’s own Aviation Rulemaking Committee in 2017, that remote identification will not be successful if the burdens and costs to drone operators are not minimized,’ Schulman said in an emailed statement to Bloomberg.

To date, the FAA has registered over 1.5 million drones. As of June 2019, over 8,700 reports have been filed with the FAA regarding rogue drones operating unsafely and/or illegally. Two collisions between a drone with a helicopter and a hot air balloon have been confirmed by the National Transportation Safety Board. ‘Remote ID technologies will enhance safety and security by allowing the FAA, law enforcement, and federal security agencies to identify drones flying in their jurisdiction,’ said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao in a press release.

Some industry stakeholders have already expressed their frustration over the lengthy time period expected from the moment of finalization to actual implementation. Lisa Ellman, partner at international law firm Hogan Lovells and Executive Director at the Commercial Drone Alliance, states ‘our main concern is the implementation period, which is needlessly up to 3 years. Until Remote ID is implemented, the American public will be deprived of many of the vast safety, humanitarian and efficiency benefits of commercial drones…We need implementation yesterday, not 3 years from now.’

The Animaionic docking station transforms Mac Mini into a workstation for professionals

A new Kickstarter campaign is seeking funds for Animaionic, a Mac Mini docking station that supports external GPUs and SSDs. The team behind the campaign says that Animaionic was created specifically for the creative community, offering it the graphics capabilities and storage it needs at a price ultimately lower than that of the Mac Pro.

Apple’s Mac Mini, a small square-shaped desktop computer, starts at an affordable $ 799, but doesn’t offer the level of performance needed by professional filmmakers and photographers. The Mac Pro desktop is a more powerful alternative, but with a starting price of $ 5,999, the model is too expensive for some creators.

The Animaionic docking station aims to solve this problem by transforming the Mac Mini into a proper workstation. The model supports two PCIe graphics cards and up to four SSDs, according to the Kickstarter campaign, for up to 8TB of additional data storage capacity. The docking station also features an SD card reader, two USB 3.1 ports, Thunderbolt 3, HDMI, Ethernet and an audio mini jack.

When used with a pair of AMD Radeon Vega 56 graphic cards, the Animaionic team claims the Mac Mini with docking station offers considerably higher performance in a number of popular applications, including 4.5x greater performance in Final Cut Pro X, 10x in Apple Motion and 25x in Luxmark.

The Kickstarter campaign is offering Animaionic to backers who pledge at least £699; shipping is estimated to start in May 2020.

Darktable 3.0 released with new features, bug fixes and major GUI update

Darktable 3.0, the latest version of the open source photo editing software DRP reported on early last month, has officially been released. As revealed when the first release candidate was made available for public testing, Darktable 3.0 brings a number of large changes and improvements to the software, including a reworked GUI that makes it possible to apply full themes to the software.

‘Darktable’ will be the default theme in Darktable 3.0, but users will also be able to use alternatives like the ‘Darktable Elegant Dark,’ a lighter version of the theme, and ‘Darktable Elegant Darker,’ which has more condensed fonts best used with the Roboto font, according to the developers.

GUI changes aside, Darktable 3.0 adds a number of improvements and new features, including ‘many changes’ to the ‘denoise (profiled)’ module, a rewrite of the previous Picasa export module that switches it over to Google Photos, the addition of new ‘RGB Curve’ and ‘RGB Levels’ modules, a new ‘Basic Adjustments’ module, new color pickers for modules like ‘Watermark’ and ‘Split Toning,’ what the developers refer to as ‘many code optimizations’ for SSE and CPU paths and much more.

In addition to the new features and improvements, Darktable 3.0 includes several bug fixes and support for additional camera models, noise profiles and white balance presets. As expected, the latest version of the software is free to download on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Canon’s RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM will get a firmware update to fix the focusing issue next month

Next month, Canon will release a firmware update that fixes an autofocus problem reported by RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM telephoto lens owners. The company says it’s confirmed this lens may produce a ‘slightly front-focused’ image when the photo is captured at close range with the focus distance set to around the 200mm end of the scale.

Canon will release the firmware with a bug fix for this problem in January 2020, the company revealed on its US website. The new firmware will be intended for RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM lenses running firmware version 1.0.5 or earlier, something that can be checked within the camera’s menu.

The Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM telephoto lens is available from B&H Photo and other retailers for $ 2,699.

The year in photos: Jordan Drake and the art of crying

Preface*

Crying is a highly evolved human trait. Tears can be an indicator of fear or stress. They can simply be a mechanism to flush out the eyes. Or they can convey joy and pain, heartache and elation. Distilled to their very core, tears are the truth. Tears are a most sincere way of reaching out for human connection, and so I would ask the reader to hold this concept tightly as they bear witness to Jordan and his experience. I would ask of the reader a willingness to reach out to Jordan and internalize that sincerity through the medium of the photograph.

Before we start this journey for connection I feel it necessary to reveal that these photos were not taken once per month as this slide show suggests. The human spirit does not follow a schedule and these powerful moments were captured as they birthed themselves upon the stage, if you will, that is DPReview TV. They will be shown in an order that does not harness itself to chronological accuracy, but rather is akin to a musical composition intended to stir the soul in its entirety. Let us begin.


* In case you’re not familiar with DPReview TV, here’s the backstory: In many of their weekly video episodes, our hosts Chris and Jordan feature a photo of Jordan curled up in the fetal position. It’s a bit of a running gag, Jordan’s soul isn’t really tortured by demons (or so we’ve been told). If you have’t discovered DPReview TV yet, you can find episodes here.

January

The photo before you was taken in Wayne, Alberta. All around us the harsh, weather-worn canyons stood silent sentinel to Jordan’s struggle. The roadway symbolizes not only a means of transition but also a vector of impending danger. The bridge a final gateway to salvation from that state of being. Yet Jordan has collapsed short of his goals and instead must simply cry out as the valley bears witness. It is the Panasonic S1 which allows that moment to be appreciated by all.

February

This is a local city green space in Calgary named Shepherd’s Park. The brutal metal grating causes Jordan discomfort as he hesitantly lies down upon it. Our hero clings tightly to his Panasonic GH5, monopod, and headphones, the tools of his expression. They are also like a prison to him, a concept further sustained by the rigid framing of the metal gantry. He is trapped, but perhaps he has also chosen his prison. Is the Canon EOS 90D not also a prison to his struggle?

March

Ah Seattle! Your charming hills, and quiet neighborhoods set the stage for this next humanistic landscape. The monochromatic nature of this image serves a dual purpose. It simplifies the intent capturing the banality of the environment. It also requests the viewer to bring their own experiences to the artwork. Have you not found yourself clinging to sanity in a car port? Have you not also smelled the stench that lingers in such places? Jordan is experiencing this very thing, here on the pavement, and in doing so brings about a deep connection with you the viewer. You are both crying in a driveway now. The Nikon Z50 sees you both.

April

Not all tears represent sadness, or misery. They can be uplifting and joyful too. Their power lies in the expression of both the heights, and abysses, of human emotion. Jordan is a self proclaimed cinephile with a passion for movie-making, and a deep appreciation for the craft. The mural sang to him a moment of pure elation, straight from the celluloid. He was overcome and found himself compelled to dance, drowning in a symphony of joy. I was humbled to have captured it with the Nikon Z7. It did not falter.

May

A quiet stillness falls over an autumnal lake. Jordan falls over a picnic table. An Olympus EM5-3 clicks once. A singular truth is revealed. It occurs only in this unique image. Jordan lies now left to right. Left to right. Profundity.

June

Wait! Hey Jordan, run up the highway and lie down in the middle. Do I have to? Yes! It’ll look great, do it. What about traffic? Do it! – Friendship – GFX100

July

This image is a personal favorite of mine. Notice the strong leading line drawing the eyes to our reluctant hero. The organic shapes, the smooth curves, the magenta hues, all speak to a sense of the living body. We witness a childhood. We witness a birthing. Is it a skatepark, or is it a womb? The Fuji GFX 50R reveals the truth, but only you can interpret it.

August

Leitz Park. Wetzlar, Germany. One would be forgiven for assuming the common stereotype that Leica is only style, engineering, and precision. On the most superficial level they create cameras as works of art. However, when one digs deeper one finds a company defined by its people. Its people are defined universally by their kindness and their willingness to give. Here they have given him an opportunity to create with the pinnacle of their lens technology. Jordan is a person of deep emotion, and once again he is overcome. His face speaks only truth, his elation is clear, his gratitude is given. The Leica SL2 brings this sincerity to the forefront. It simply whispers ‘Thank You.’

September

The smartphone has arrived, a harbinger of change in an industry that never wants to. Its message is a whisper that will grow into a cacophonous roar. Many of us hear only a gentle song on a winter’s breeze. Jordan however is not one of us. His senses are astute and his understanding is omniscient. He hears the roar and it is deafening. The shrill call brings him to his knees, and he must curl up in the fetal position or risk madness. I produced the Pixel 4 from my pocket and so I am the one to blame. This picture is my guilty confession.

October

Why is Jordan sitting up? He always lies down in the filth and the muck. He is mine to create with. Never questioning, and always accommodating. And yet we see him spared from the veritable ocean of grime which surrounds his small island of respite. Is the pursuit of pure art less important than his comfort? Should we not all sacrifice for our craft? Does the Sony a7R III not also deserve this tribute? Is pain and suffering not the fertilizer of the sublime? However, he is safe and warm. He cries because I am furious with him, and yet he remains dry. That is why this photo sucks.

November

I call this photo ‘Goldilocks’. The one on the left is too proud. The one on the right is too demure. But the one in the middle is just right! Also the astro-turf and garish display of cheap plastics communicate my personal statement about rampant and wasteful consumerism. How it effects workers, environmental factors, and our social consciousness, et cetera, et cetera. Taken with the Fuji XT3.

December

Our last photo is a palate cleanser of sorts. It is not a statement about the inherent duality of our existence. Nor is it a dissertation about Jordan’s emotional state. It is not a symphony or a poem. It has no higher purpose as art, nor does it ascend to the realms of the sublime. It simply is our Christmas card picture to all of you for supporting us during 2019! We appreciate the opportunity you give us all to entertain firstly, and educate secondly. Thank you so much to all of our friends and compatriots at DPReview for all your hard work in making our show possible. Here’s to an excellent 2020 and all the promise the New Year will bring.
