Thieves steal more than $50,000 in equipment from camera store in less than a minute

24 Dec

This past week, Hunt’s Photo and Video, a small camera store located in Manchester, New Hampshire, had thousands of dollars worth of camera gear stolen from its stands and cases overnight.

Detailed in a video produced by NBC10 Boston, CCTV footage shows four thieves breaking through the front of the store with the help of an axe. Once the entrance is cleared, the thieves run inside with four containers and smash the display cases to access the gear. The thieves subsequently fill each container with thousands of dollars in camera equipment and slide them across the floor as they make their way towards the exit.

In less than a minute, the smash and grab netted the thieves more than $ 50,000 in equipment, according to Mike Mitchell, VP of Hunt’s Photo and Video. The high quality CCTV footage captured a partial identification on one of the thieves when their mask was lifted, but hasn’t led to any definitive identifications as of the publication of this video.

Four months prior to this break-in, Hunt’s experienced a nearly identical break-in wherein the thieves made off with another $ 50,000 in gear. Local authorities are working alongside Hunt’s Photo and Video to identify and capture the suspects and believe the two break-ins are related to each other.

DPReview has contacted Hunt’s for more information on what was stolen and what the serial numbers are. This article will be updated accordingly if Hunt’s responds with the information.

This lens only existed for a minute and was made from a crystal clear iceberg

24 Oct

French photographer and YouTuber Mathieu Stern is known for his look at rare, vintage glass, but his latest lens might just top it all. While on Iceland’s famous “iceberg beach,” Stern fulfilled his dream of shooting photos and videos with a lens made of ice.

“Shooting photos using an ice lens [has been] my dream for almost 2 years. After some research I saw that almost no one ever tried this crazy idea, mainly because it’s hard as hell to find pure ice, and even harder to get a clear image,” says Stern in the video’s description. “So I had the choice to give up on my idea because it was too hard, or to just level up in the craziness […] If it’s hard to find pure ice in my city, maybe I should go where I could find some 10 000 year old pure ice — Iceland’s famous iceberg beach.”

The night before Stern and his friends were supposed to go to the beach, a “huge” storm went through and took all of the icebergs away from shore. So, they waited a few days and eventually went back three days later at 5am in the morning to get a chunk from one of the icebergs that had made its way to shore.

Stern says it took nearly six hours to create a single working ice lens, after four of them had broken inside of the housing. Every iteration, each of which took 45 minutes to make, was done so with the help of a Japanese cocktail ice ball maker, which Stern had hacked to form the piece of iceberg into a half-sphere.

The housing of the lens he created was 3D-printed, which held the continuously-melting piece of ice in place in front of Stern’s camera. As you could imagine, shooting with the lens was less than ideal. The lens lasted only a minute or so after it was completed and trying to focus as it was melting proved to be a challenge.

According to Stern, no cameras were harmed in the making of the video. As to whether or not he was happy with the result, Stern says “This project is a scientific, artistic and poetic project — I never imagined the result would look like the photos that comes from an ultra modern lens, but I was amazed by the strange beauty of the images I made with the first ever 10,000 year old lens.”

You can read Stern’s detailed account on the creation of the lens and see more of his work on his website.

Watch thousands of books being reshelved in a two minute time-lapse

31 Oct

After a two-year closure for repairs, the Rose Main Reading Room at the New York Public Library reopened earlier this month. That meant a whole lot of books had to go back on the shelves. Thankfully, the whole process has been documented in a totally engrossing time-lapse video that makes it look way easier than it actually was. Take a look at the video above, and head to the NYPL’s blog for more on the grand re-opening of their Rose Main Reading Room.

Photographers Ignite – 5 Minute Power Sessions to Change Your World

15 Mar

Screen Shot 2015-03-11 at 7.17.19 PMI only just heard about Photographers Ignite, which is a twist on the extremely popular Ignite Sessions. It is produced by Kevin Kubota and I had a chance to sit in on the sessions on the last day of this year’s WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) conference.

I asked Kevin if I could share some of the videos and he agreed, so while the sessions from this year aren’t online yet I hand picked a few from the archives that I think you’ll enjoy.

#1 – There’s gotta be something more . . .

This video by Matt and Katie spoke to me on so many levels. I’ve been to the burnout stage and like Katie, survived and got my love for photography back. Giving back using my photography is something I believe in passionately and we even have a few articles about how to do that here on dPS (I’ll put some links below the video for you). Watch and see if it speaks to you as well.

  • Why to Consider Doing Photography Related Volunteering in Your Community
  • Using Photography to Make a Heartfelt Difference
  • Photography As A Means For Societal Betterment
  • Use Your Camera to Give
  • Photography projects that make you feel alive

#2 – The Creativity of a child

On a very similar theme of finding that lost passion or creativity, Melissa Niu tells her story of how her daughter helped her recapture hers. As adults with busy lives we seem to lose a little of ourselves and creativity is suppressed or put on the shelf. Find a way to rekindle yours.

  • Kick Your Creativity Up A Notch
  • 6 Ways to Enhance Your Creativity
  • 12 Ways to Add Randomness and Creativity to Your Photography
  • 5 Cheap and Easy Ways to Re-inspire Your Photographic Creativity

#3 – Need to know

Adobe teacher and guru Julieanne Kost (and self proclaimed geek) goes through the things she feels are the need to know items in terms of the technical side of photography. “Learn the technology” says Kost so you it becomes an asset which allows you to focus on your creativity not the technology.

So? Are you inspired and motivated?

Let here what you plan to do now. If you watch the Matt and Katie video he urges everyone to do what? DO! Take action. Because . . .

“Inspiration and awareness without action is just entertainment.”

A 10 Minute Lesson to Photographing Images with More Pizzazz

28 Sep

Photograph-plain-things-with-pizzazz-article-shadow-helping-an-image

Even the most seasoned photographer wants to continue to stretch their creativity. I know I do!

One simple activity you can do in your spare time is to find new ways to photograph everyday, plain things. Yup, the things you see or use every day; no models, no glamorous set-ups, no breathtaking locations. You don’t even need to do this with a fancy DSLR camera or have a significant amount of time. The lesson you learn can be achieved in 10 minutes once a week, using a $ 100 camera or a smart phone.

Your goal is to make something very plain look more interesting through your lens.

Tips:

1. Pay attention to the shadows

If there is a lot of light, then there are probably shadows. Figure out if the shadows are helping the image or hurting it. If the shadows take away from the image, then make a change so that they don’t. The change could be a significant one, like moving your object altogether, or it could be a subtle one, like changing the angle you are shooting.

2. Look for natural patterns and shapes

If you can locate natural patterns in your shot or interesting shapes within the object or everyday scene, then you can shoot it in a way that highlights this.

3. Know where there is good light

If you can move the object, then place it in the light you want. That could be near a window if you are indoors, or in the shade, if you are outside when the sun is too bright. If you can’t move what you are shooting, then re-position yourself or angle of your camera.

4. Take a close-up shot of one of the key details

You don’t always have to photograph the full object or the entire scene. Figure out what are the key details and consider photographing just that.

5. If it opens, open it – if it moves, move it

Is it a chest? A book? A cookie jar? Photographing it opened will show the content and make the image more dynamic.

Example:  Photographing plain things to create images with more pizzazz

I gave myself 10 minutes to walk around my house and find natural hearts. This lesson was easy and fun. More importantly, it let me see these plain, everyday objects differently (see three images above for more of the hearts I found).

So, now what?

Doing this activity from time to time can help you discover new ways to photograph people, landscapes, or whatever makes your heart sing. You can give yourself a specific goal, like finding a particular shape, as I did in the example above, or give yourself a general goal of shooting an object with pizzazz in 10 minutes.

Over time, your eyes will be trained to do this on their own, and the results may surprise you.

How this activity translates into lifestyle shoots

Here are a few examples from my recent photoshoots:
